What a knowledgeable, amazing and health first-focused staff. I was so impressed with their COVID protocols, and want to thank them for everything they did to make sure that I felt safe. I am immunocompromised, and I have to mask indoors wherever the public is permitted. They not only helped me make a big purchase decision, but also provided a literal safe space for me to make that decision in. If you're reading into their superior biking education as excessive salesmanship, then you're missing the point. You end up leaving with more than you came with, even if you don't make the purchase. If what you need a fast flat tire fix, and Bicycle Roots is asking to schedule it (most likely in the same day), note that there are plenty of other stores in the area that can do that for you. But I'd rather have my maintenance done at Bicycle Roots, because they understand the art of bicycles and relationship-building. read more

They do pretty solid work here and the staff is pretty cool. I've gotten flat tire repairs and rim/tire replacements and all the little bells and whistles that go along with those procedures. The prices are pretty standard, I gather. They may be slightly higher than a spot I used to (unfortunately) frequent (damn flat tires) in SoHo, but they may have just felt bad for me because I came in so often with so many issues... *sigh* old bikes. Nevertheless, just ask for a pricelist before service begins if you are concerned. They're usually pretty good at communicating the prices to you as the work is in progress so that's definitely a plus. I will say, if you're having work done, just get it all taken care of in one session because I was quoted a $50 price tag to complete some work that I was having done that included just replacing the front wheel and tire as well as the back. I decided to hold out on the front wheel due to time and wanting to go to Happy Hour and pay Happy Hour prices (don't judge me). I came back in 2 weeks to get the front wheel taken care of and that $50 quote turned into a $70 price tag in the end. I assume it's charged to labor on a different day, so be mindful. Aside from service, they also sell bikes (pretty nice bikes) at some more reasonable prices than other places. They'll tune one up for a test ride for you while you wait for your repairs to finish. Just leave a credit card with them. Also they've got a decent selection of cycle suits and and accessories for you quasi professional and Tour de France riders-in-training. read more

Appreciate the folks at Bicycle Roots. I caught a flat tire (I randomly ran over the tiniest bit of a knife blade). I happened to be within walking distance of this shop so when I got there I noticed a sign on the door that said bike repairs are by appt only. Thankfully the person who greeted me at the door (I forget their name but I believe they had a beard) said that the mechanic could probably fit me in. They explained that I would need a new tire, gave me options (I upgraded to a sturdier, more durable tire that doesn't catch flats easily) and they even gave me the cost breakdown and total before doing any work. The service was top notch, prices were reasonable and I will most definitely be going back there for all my future repairs. I went here to get my brake pads fixed and they were pretty backed up so I was expecting to pick it up the next day. I got a call a few hours later that the bike was ready early. Go to Ride Brooklyn on Bergen instead for friendly service! I used a 3rd party service to have my bike shipped to Bicycle Roots from Texas when I moved to Bk. I called Bicycle Roots TWICE before I placed my order to ask them what info they needed from me before I booked the service and they seemed very chill and like it wasn't a huge deal and that I was going to be taken care of by them. Cool, I felt like I didn't have to stress about this one piece of my move. Fast forward to my first week in Bk. I get a call from a very angry man named Joe, berating me about how my bike "just showed up without any info" and how he had to call the bike shop that shipped my bike from to get my number from them. He was upset at me about not having a work order for the bike assembly. Uhhmmm... I'm sorry you guys didn't save my info that I called with on TWO separate occasions (WEEKS in advance)? I explained the situation and he rudely said he "guess" he'd have to find the time to take care of it. OKAY, thanks dude. What a warm welcome to the neighborhood. Such a shame -- I was so excited when I saw that I was moving to a neighborhood with a bike shop nearby because I'd rather support local shops than purchase everything online. I picked up my bike, paid them the last $50 I will ever spend in that store, and left. To be fair, every other staff member I met was super friendly, so I'll give them 2 stars for that. I have been to this shop multiple times since their opening and always receive a not so pleasant vibe from the owner. Today, I had enough and that is why I am writing this negative review. It would be great to know that a new business (gentrification) would have the common sense to engage with its new community with a smile and when asked how are you, the owner does not respond with if your looking for air look to the front because I am overwhelmed!!! Me and my fiancé both have spent money on bike servicing, apparel merchandise, repairs, and bike parts. I refuse to spend anymore money in an establishment where the owner feels like customer service is an after thought. After I left today, I tip the employee $5 for oiling my bike chain but left having the owner stare me down. The man who helped my girlfriend and me (two women) was incredibly condescending. I don't know what it is about guys who are into bikes and know a lot about this one thing, who get off on choosing a career where they get to talk down to people paying them for help. As this guy was talking I could feel him realize he was being short and condescending with us (probably reflecting on a previous complaint) and watched him transform before my eyes into speaking to us instead like we were children, really slow as if we wouldn't be able to understand the big words coming out of his mouth. While we were there, we weren't rude nor did we act like we knew anything; we were humbly asking for help and advice. He told us we couldn't raise our bike stem, and ignored us when we suggested he change the stem to a longer one, and just kept saying over and over "that stem can't be raised"; we went to another store and they said absolutely they could change the stem and were super friendly about it, and even acknowledged it would help with lower back issues (which is why we want it raised). I teach college students, I know how to speak to people who don't know things and not make them feel stupid about it, and it takes minimal effort. He also put my girlfriend's bike seat back on too high, and ignored me when I said so. She tried it on outside, and it was comically high (and way above the clear dust mark line on the seat post), and we had to wait in line again to get back into the store to have the other gentleman who worked there lower it. I purchased my first bike here a few weeks ago and had a great experience! Since the shop was open by appointment only due to the pandemic, I made an appointment online after consulting with a staff member about their inventory. I was specifically interested in a hybrid bike than was under $600. Thankfully there were a few in stock as many other businesses were sold out due to the demand. When I came to the store the bike was set up and ready for a test drive. Nooga was very helpful in explaining the bike functions and the mechanic quickly installed a bell and addressed an issue I had. I felt very comfortable visiting as the shop has clear protocol to make sure I was able to social distance. I've been riding my bike everyday and would definitely stop in for any repairs as this seems like a business with integrity. read more

Yay! Crown Heights finally has an affordable and good bike shop! I've found the employees very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. While there are cheaper bike shops in Brooklyn none of them were around the corner from me. I've had them to build me a new rear wheel which really both looks great and rides wonderfully. They also have done more routine stuff such as tune-ups and selling me tires and tubes. I will say that you should stay away from their bulk tubes since two of the ones I bought had manufacturing defects and the others went flat really quickly. Also, for some reason one of the mechanics wanted to replace my slick tires with heavy Gatorskins. I know people love the Gatorskins but such heavy tires don't belong on a light weight road bike in my opinion. Pros + Affordable + Friendly and knowledgeable staff + Great quality work + Convenient if you live in the area Cons - Poor quality bulk tubes - They just want to put Gatorskins on every bike read more

I've never written a Yelp review before, but my experience here demanded one. This store mis-measured my bike, ordered parts that were grossly mismatched, and took forever to make repairs. They were rude when I disagreed with them about parts they said could not be obtained (they could) and that would not fit (they did). They gave me incorrect advice about the fit of my bike, which I use every day. When they finally returned my bike, they had shoddily reattached ripped handlebar tape, and capped it with ripped electrical tape. Huh? I should add that while I was in the store, one of the clerks shouted "how f*ing stupid can you be" about another customer who had just left. The clerks in this store are convinced of their own self-worth, but I have found that they make extremely shoddy repairs. read more

This location has many bikes on sale including collapsible folding bikes. Accessories range from clothing to helmets, locks and more specialized items. The sales room has air conditioning. I've been avoiding fixing my bicycle after an unfortunate run-in with another bicycle shop in the area involving the wrong parts and coming within an inch of needing to be hospitalized--I have a hard time trusting bicycle shops to put the same care into my bicycle as I would so when something bigger than I feel comfortable fixing happens. Some friends recommended this place but I was broke and then winter came and so I kept putting it off. Finally took it in last weekend and Joe was great. The other mechanics saw that I had a vintage bicycle and called him over since they knew he was the specialist in older bicycles and he was so knowledgable. Most mechanics seem to know nothing about vintage bicycles but don't know they know nothing and try to fix it like a newer bike, which is how my bicycle ended up in such bad shape--beyond the one wrong part that cause my crash, I had accumulated a whole bunch of parts that were wrong and and only kind of worked, resulting in my bicycle running really poorly. I was ready to put a chunk of money into replacing a whole bunch of bad/wrong parts and getting it in good condition once and for all. Joe knew all the places to get my parts, most of which had to be special ordered because it's a vintage bicycle, and didn't try to steer me to get ill suited parts just because they had them in stock. He was familiar with all the potential quirks of my bicycle, and knowledgable enough about the make and year of my bike and it's parts to find and fix even the quirks of my bike that I forgot to tell him about, including some long term problems that other mechanics have told me we're not possible to fix. He even fixed the downtube shifters that at least three previous mechanics had told me were irreparable and needed to be replaced with a really rare and expensive part (I was even ready to pay for the new part and he said he could just fix it) Really excited to have found a bicycle mechanic I can trust and who has clearly taken the time and care to get to know my bicycle! read more

After having a bad experience at Fulton Bikes with laxedazical, stuck up, and rude employees. You know the people that open bike shops who don't know their products or anything about biking, that charge to much and won't cut you deals if you buy $120 tires, they won't give you a discount on putting them on either, you're just money to them. Bicycle Roots is more the hipster type bike shop which is awesome. These guys are cycling experts and classy. They care and are very passionate about their job. This store sells a lot of high end products like $350 biking backpacks but they also sell affordable stuff. They have a large selection of baskets and racks. They sell shoes, lights, locks, and a bunch of other stuff too. Very positive energy here. The employees weren't down my throat trying to sell me stuff like other bike shops. They were just like if you need any help let me know in a sincere voice. Not overly "fake nice" like some bike shops. Love this shop and will be back. I love going into a shop with employees that are like me not employees that think they are better then you because they think they know more about bikes or think they are so cool. read more

Real Review from a Real Customer. Having moving to New York a year and a half ago, I remember wanting to buy a bicycle so I could explore more of Brooklyn and not be so dependent on the subway. Last May I made it over to Bicycle Roots at their new location and I was more than pleased. Their new location stands out and they have a great selection of bicycles, helmets, gear, messenger bags, etc. They even have a nice outdoor area for you to wait while your bicycle is getting detailed/repaired. Nechama was absolutely amazing and friendly. I tried out several bicycles and we found one that fit me well. She is a wealth of knowledge and you can tell that she loves what she does. With this being my first bicycle purchase in a long time I had many questions and concerns. She was very helpful and educated me on taking care of my bicycle and what to do for maintenance. I was given a good recommendation on a helmet and USB lights as well. Over the last several months I have taken in my bicycle for repairs/new tubes and had the pleasure of meeting Joe. He is also very knowledgable and friendly. I have had check ups on my bicycle that were free of charge or for a pretty low price. Everything works better than ever after I leave. Almost all 5-star reviews on Yelp. Really? If you want to believe those are objective reviews written be people unconnected with the business, well, that's your call. I'd hoped to like this place and support a new local business. Here I'll bring some diversity to the reviews on this page: I went out of the way my normal train commute home to stop by their shop, the closest to my new apt. I needed a tube, but I hadn't checked to the precise fraction of an inch of my tube width. I rarely buy tubes because i use thick tires, so I don't remember it offhand. 1) Rather than using their expert knowledge to help figure out what tube I'd need, the mechanic kept spouting different numbers at me and saying he couldn't help me if I didn't know. 2) I tried to get him to help me make a best estimate. I thought I'd bring home the closest choice, and if, when i checked my tire markings at home, it was wrong, I'd bring it back and swap it for the correct one. I wouldn't even open the packaging. This would mean a guaranteed sale AND a return visit to their shop. Not to mention building a good relationship, as I had in my old neighborhood. Mechanic's response: I can't help you guestimate, and we don't take returns or exchanges once it leaves the shop. That's our policy. I say to the front desk guy that I got bad customer service (I've worked for almost a decade in service). His response: That's our policy. My response: I'm not returning to nor recommending to me neighbors a business that gives such poor service. His response: [dead stare] Typical new bike shop elitism, I've had this experience when I try most new places. I'm trekking back to Dixon's, with 45 years rooted in Brooklyn, not 6 months, and where I always get good service. For these new "Roots": Buyer beware. read more

Just ended a month long quest for a new bike right where I started, Bicycle Roots. It was the first place I went on my search and they treated me great. I spent an hour in a half asking questions and test riding all sorts of different bikes. And even though I didn't buy anything that day, I was really impressed with the knowledge and general friendliness of the people working there. From there I went to a few other shops, but none of them had the friendly vibe or knowledge that the peeps of Bike Roots had. Ultimately that's what brought me back, I got a Surly Cross Check and I couldn't be happier. Great Shop, with Good, Smart, people. Also, its got a spacious layout that is pretty inviting to both bring your bike in for repairs, and to browse the merchandize. Bicycle roots is a quirky, friendly, reliable, knowledgeable and honest bike shop. I personally have bought 2 bikes there. I balked at the suggested price of the first one, a Surly LHT, but after riding it for my daily commute loaded with gear (which they helped me plan out how to carry) I knew I had made the right choice based on the words of wisdom of Joe and Nechama, the owners. I was originally in love with a Yuba which would have been cute but the Surly was so much more badass! Sadly, that bike got stolen from my hallway a few months later. My second bike, as suggested by the crew, was a Specialized that gets the job done but it isn't nearly as amazeballs comfy. I wish I could have afforded a replacement Surly. *sniff* It was the best of lesser evils. Joe breaks my heart every time he suggests I just get a new bike. He makes up for it though when he brings his rabbit to the shop and lets me luv up on the bunny. What has been amazing is their repair service. I am not the most careful with my ride nor the most careful with my gears. They provide free? lifetime service for bikes they have sold, and have provided numerous adjustments for things that most other shops would charge for that were definitely messed up by me. They don't nickle and dime me. I always expect to get charged for bunches of things but I don't. They were even kind to my ego when, after owning this bike for like a year, they had to school me on changing gears because we realized I had been crossing my chain. Ooops. They only berate me when I ask for it. :P They are also professional to those who come into the store to be annoying or panhandling, and I've never seen them pressure someone to buy a bike. They inform and let you make your own decisions. I also referred a coworker there last year who also bought bikes for her n hubby.
