I had a very poor experience here. I brought in my bike for a front shifting issue and was charged for derailleur adjustment twice, but the real issue was not identified. Multiple mechanics suggested I might not know how to shift properly, but the actual problem turned out to be a bent chainring. That was only discovered after I went back multiple times and pushed for them to keep looking. It did not seem like the bike had been properly test ridden before I was told the issue was rider error. Communication was also difficult, and the overall attitude I experienced from staff felt passive aggressive rather than helpful. I was largely left on my own trying to sort out what was going on. They also replaced the wrong bolt on my saddle. When I asked about replacing the correct bolts, I was told they did not have the proper ones, and the issue was not properly resolved. After multiple visits, repeated charges, poor communication, and the real problem being missed until I pushed for further inspection, I would not return. read more

My partner and I have given this bike shop multiple chance but every time the customer service is so icky. The men who work there make us feel so condescended to and unwelcome. It's like they don't want us to buy anything. Like we should be embarrassed for asking questions and we're pathetic for not knowing certain things about bikes and gear. The staff acts like they're curating art at a gallery instead of fixing brakes. I asked about a repair and got a response like I interrupted a TED Talk on bicycle culture. Relax--it's a chain and two wheels. And the prices? I thought they were quoting me for a full bike rebuild, a documentary, and emotional support. Labor costs so high I expected my bike to come back with better credit than me. Same attitude both times--like I needed them more than they needed customers. It's a bike shop, not a fashion week afterparty. Nobody needs this level of arrogance over a tune-up. Plenty of other shops in NYC that will fix your bike and treat you like a human being. Of course the item is now back to normal price. I immediately called and they explained to me their process of building a bike. In just a week and a half, they had built the bike and I was notified by email when it was ready to pick up. Before paying, they adjusted the seat for my height and I circled the block a few times. It was exactly what I was looking for. They even sent a follow up, asking if the bike was treating me well. What a great place to get your bike on. It's been even more essential to have two wheeled transportation these days and Habitat has you covered. The crew is knowledgeable, caring and flexible. I bought a bike from them a few years back and loved it. It was a sad day when someone broke into our garage and stole it (cutting the lock and all), but I knew I'd need a new one. Even though Habitat couldn't source the bike I was looking for (we are also in the middle of a bike shortage if you didn't know!!) they were completely up for assembling one that I was able to locate myself. Picking up the bike in the middle of a pandemic was smooth with social distancing outside and proper precautions being applied. I checked in and within a few minutes my ready to go bike was brought outside so I could pedal away. They're my go to even though it's not in my hood, and it's worth it. Was in a pinch to get my bike serviced prior to an upcoming vacation. Called a few other bike shops who were unable to accommodate my schedule. I landed at Bicycle Habitat and wasn't thrilled with my overall experience. The positives: Repaired my bike with a quick turn around time (a few days). Thorough diagnosis, and itemization of issues with bike. The negatives: LONG LINES I was waiting for my bike to be looked over by a mechanic for a rather long time, I wanted to just drop the bike off and discuss the repairs over the phone, but they said that isn't possible. Despite having to wait, customers aren't allowed in the store to discuss issues with the mechanic which makes for a very clunky work flow. I feel that they are expensive for repairs. Overall, I would go back to them if I needed something done urgent, with the anticipation of a long line. But would go somewhere else at a better price point. read more

Due to limited time and open business hours due to the coronavirus situation, I communicated with Bicycle Habitat solely by email. Libby was very responsive/attentive and answered all of my questions/concerns. She made some great suggestions of her own as well which I ended up getting. The bicycle was built the same day I decided on it, and I picked it up the same day. I rode over on my lunch hour and waited in line patiently, obeying the current 6 foot social distancing guidelines. A few moments later my bike came rolling out the business entrance and I took it for a test drive. Making the final decision I was escorted inside to make the purchase. Libby answered any remaining questions and we added some last minute items. The whole thing really happened within a couple of days. I'm sure knowing more or less what I wanted helped, but Libby's customer service certainly made things easier. This is a difficult and stressful time for many. I had an excellent experience with this shop. Last week I went to buy a new bicycle, they had so many options with different price ranges. Zach helped me find the bicycle I needed. He was very experienced and knew how to accommodate my wish within my budget. I got a light weight Specialized bicycle, weight was my main factor for buying a bike, I didn't mind spending a little extra $$ knowing how significantly that affects cycling performance. He ordered my size and built up the bicycle, Following week we went together on a test ride. The bicycle was exactly what i'm looking for, very light, smooth, easy to use. Zach took his time explaining how to operate the bike and explaining additional tips on how to make my riding more comfortable. During my test ride, I had an unforeseen experience where I got an asthma attack, I was very grateful to have Zach with me, he was very courteous and sat me at a restaurant and went back to the bike shop to get my inhaler from my purse. He was also very patient and supportive and made sure I was feeling okay before we went back to the shop. I purchased a Specialized bicycle for my niece several years ago and I was told by Bicycle Habitat that they would do free lifetime adjustments for the bike. The bike needed a derailer adjustment so I brought it in for repair. I was shocked when the sales associate told me that free adjustments were no longer store policy. The sales associate stated that the only thing that was free was Covid. I found this to be in poor taste. The Chelsea location just treated us so poorly when we went there for a tune up appointment. When we gave our name to the woman working there, she said we did not have an appointment- and it would be 5 days until our bikes would be serviced. They had nothing in their system and nothing they could do. No apology, no nothing. Then when my husband started to get upset - she told him to calm down -and that she was going to go inside to let him cool down. That was odd because he was def. frustrated but not enough for her to walk away. That's where it became evident customer service is not important to them. Long story short, they didn't believe we had an appointment and didn't really care if we were upset and just didn't want to deal with it. Despite being a chain, both this bicycle habitat and the one in prospect height continue to provide the friendly vibe of a local bike shop while having all the perks of a chain with multiple stores. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and they never tried to upsell or hurry you. I always find myself learning something new each time I go into their store, and you can tell how passionate everyone who works at the shop is. My wife and I got into biking about six years ago and in that time I have seen her treated dismissively and with outright hostility by male bike store employees--seemingly for the crime of being a woman. When an issue with her bike fit came up, we called around to find a bike shop with a woman bike fit specialist and found the Park Slope Bicycle Habitat. Libby was so helpful and patient and figured out the solution to the issue my wife was having almost immediately--something that the gatekeeper who sold the bike should have considered but......... I've been to the other Bicycle Habitat locations in Manhattan and am a fan. This branch though seems to have some logistical and day to day operations tweaks that need to take place. Inventory seemed to be skim to none. Looking for a particular helmet, bike chain, and saddle and they were all out of stock. Shelves seemed to only have one particular item in stock and it was only one of it rather than full line up on hooks. They did have a wide variety of bikes and salespeople seemed to be attentive but overall experience it was far from how it was from the Manhattan branches. read more

With the inclement weather change from beauty sunny to dreaded cold (as bipolar as NY tends to be) I had been meaning to fill my tube up with air for weeks, cycling along with the unpleasant bumps along the way. I finally gave up and dragged myself into this store worried that I'd be turned away. Delightfully, I was not! The workers were ALL very helpful and when they saw that I was having trouble with my older type of tube, one stopped and coached me along the way. Went on a Saturday afternoon around 1pm and there was a bit of a line (maybe 3-4 in front of us.) The employees were communicative and quickly helpful. My bike had a flat tire, and while the mechanics took it inside and fixed it, we waited outside under the shade of tents which was an added bonus! It cost $20 ($7 for the "tube" and $13 for service.) Seemed reasonable to me. All in all, the staff were friendly and informative and the process was painless. This will definitely be my new bike spot in the neighborhood. read more

I've bought several bikes there, have gotten amazing advice and service from Hal, a fitting from Emily, and a solid deal from Libby when I had to get a new ride after my bike was stolen. Came in here 3 weeks ago after talking on the phone with the store's workers several times before coming in. I found out I have 2 options to purchase a bike. Option one is lay away and option 3 is Trek credit card. So I came in and applied for the Trek Credit card and was approved for 3,500 bucks. WOW. So, foolishly, I went to the more expensive bikes that ranged from 800-1500 bucks. Luckily Jim came and asked me some questions regarding my biking habits. He asked me important questions that truly pertained what were my biking needs. After everything was asked and answered, he brought me to the Trek FX2. Instead of spending countless dollars, Jim was kind enough to ask me all the necessary questions so that I can be fitted with the perfect bike. Was looking to purchase a bike but was given no guidance from sales and rushed away after spending 45 minutes in line. The staff at this store are nice but the mechanics don't really take pride in their work, so I can't recommend. Whenever I get anything fixed here, I have to inspect everything afterward to make sure it was done properly, then awkwardly ask them to re-do the subpar work. If I'm going to pay someone cash to fix my bike instead of doing it myself, I'd prefer not to have an extra load of mental frustration on top. It should be done right the first time. read more

I recently started biking in the city because of the pandemic and wanted to have my used bike taken a look at just to make sure it was in good working order. The line is long, but staff were very nice and seemed to try to help people quickly without feeling like they were being rushed. I thought I would get a full tune-up but after talking with the mechanic he did a $20 safety check that took like 10 minutes since he said it looked like my bike was in good shape. He also answered questions I had about swapping my tires out and answered a question I had about the gears.
