Writing a review for a road bike I purchased a few years ago from R&A -- like the reviews note, the service is fairly gruff/rude -- however, they were the only store that had the road bike I wanted in stock so purchased. I was all set to purchase, but the mechanic (I believe Luis) had me get on the bike and said I needed to size down. He then did an impromptu fit to get everything dialed in. 3 years later, the bike rides like a dream and is a perfect fit and has brought me years of enjoyment. read more

My client and I have had a few conversations with RA trying to figure out his next super bike and around every corner we were disrespected and insulted which is surprising when we are looking at dropping over $20,000 on a bicycle. Unfortunately, for one of his builds, I did use them to get some components that I couldn't source other places and around every corner they drop the ball. We were not notified that parts were on backorder, even though it said when I ordered that they were in stock and would ship within a few days. Another part they ordered the wrong size and along this process, they never let us know what was going on. I had to call to find out why I hadn't received something in a couple weeks and then again to figure out where his stem was. They never returned our calls, which meant I had to take extra time out of my day to call back numerous times. It is unfortunate that they are such a large distributor of Colnago bikes. There's no way I'm going to support this place again. They don't deserve my money and I'm upset about the thousands of dollars I've spent there thus far. It won't happen again. read more

My first big girl bike was from R&A Cycles. Received an upgraded bike from my ex about 20 years ago and it is still in great condition. If I still lived in BK I'd get my next bike from them as well. I plan to treat myself to a new one in 2025! This place holds so many great memories for me. My dad would bring our bikes to be cleaned(oiled) whatever you call it. I am better at taking care of the one I have now because I live in a great small town that is pro-bike and I am two blocks from a shop that is my go-to maintenance folks. Very bad return policy! I bought a Garmin 45 watch, and it was faulty, dying after one use one mile into a run. I filled out the paperwork for a return and refund, and after about a month, I finally received correspondence. They shared if a product was used one time it cannot be refunded. I have already replaced the watch because I discovered it is such an old model that it probably wouldn't have lasted long anyway. Very long time for correspondence, unclear communication, and in the end terrible refund policy. Would not recommend this store to anyone! read more

R&A is quality bike shop through and through. They offer high quality products and high quality tune ups. Its sort of niche because its geared towards higher end ($1500) bikes. You can surely get repairs or parts for other bikes but it may cost more than your used it. For small things I usually use diff shops but if its a high end part I need fixed of installed I try to take it hear because they know their shit. read more

I recently moved to Brooklyn and am in the market for a local bike shop. I've been an avid cyclist for more than 25 years so I was a bit surprised to be told during my first visit to R&A that I probably don't cycle enough to be taken seriously and my Pinarello is cheap and old. (It's kind of like being told your kid is ugly.) I came in to get a broken spoke fixed and learned that my wheels cost "only" $300 and were crap. I realize that I am simply not worthy of being a customer of R&A. I pray that one of the many other bike shops in Brooklyn will accept my patronage. read more

They have an unparalleled product range, but in my experience the folks at the Brooklyn store really can be jerks. When I was in high school or junior high (mid 80's), I borrowed my sister's Panasonic 10-speed to ride down there to get a tire tube for my own bike. I didn't have a lock, so I tried to bring the bike into the store. The guy behind the counter got mad and yelled at me to leave it outside. I explained that I didn't have a lock. So he said, "fine, just lean it against the wall by the front door." Five minutes later I turn around to walk out and the damn bike is GONE. Stolen right out of the shop. I was utterly devastated, and the RA folks showed not a lick of sympathy. They just shrugged. read more

Poor management and customer service - Don't waste your time or money here. After ten years of being a loyal customer to R&A Cycles and spending thousands of dollars in their store, I have come to have my crank adjusted on my track bike. (A 30-40 minute repair according to their mechanic) The first and second time I came in for the repair they turned me away, blamed covid, lack of staff, and said they were too busy. I understand covid has every business, including my own, operating differently than normal. On my third attempt to visit the mechanic, before they could tell me they were busy, I was recognized as the guy who keeps getting turned away, and they said to come Sunday 7/12 at noon. Well, Today is Sunday at noon and once again they turned me away. In a time where anything can be purchased off amazon with free two day shipping - I have made a point to support my local bike shop and buy everything I can from local businesses. In my experience R&A Cycles, doesn't care about their long term customers. I will no longer support or refer people to this business. read more

R & A Cycles is for Bicyclist's who have deep pockets. If you need an inexpensive bike, or a casual repair, you may want to look elsewhere. R & A sells some of the most expensive bicycles that are manufactured, and it is not uncommon to spot international visitors shopping low production Colnago's and Pinarello's. Bicycle shops in NYC are also experiencing unprecedented demand for bikes and repairs, you'll need to be very patient, and expect to shell out lot's of dough. I was so dissatisfied with my service here, or should I say lack-thereof. I didn't even need a big-fix, but I was bullied in front of other customers behind me (who then left after seeing this). I just bought a bike and needed to ride it home 5 miles- the only thing was that the seat needed an adjustment, and I didn't have a wrench. Rather than schlep to a hardware store and buy something for it that I wouldn't need I thought that a bike repairman would be happy to help me for all of 2 minutes. I guess I opened the gates of hell for even asking...he could not have been ruder by demanding that I understand he is up to his ears in work and how little time he has to do silly things like this, and If I needed something I should make an appointment. The sign on the door did say by appointment (for repairs, but this is hardly a repair?) but another sign said knock for service. He acted as if I was missing a sign that said "absolutely no in-person customers, no assistance except by appointment made on the website that none of these other signs mention." If your business is open, and a customer asks you a question (especially politely!), it's flat out inappropriate and unprofessional to be uptight to them for asking. If a sign had not invited me to knock for service and told me to arrange something online, I would have been happy to do so. read more

This place is really odd, and falls into one of two lousy LBS categories: the car salesmen who don't know the facts about their equipment, and bike shops who flat out ignore perusing customers. R&A is in the second category. In fact, while I was there one of the employees was riding a bike around the shop to impress two other people and actually said "oh this guy is still here" as he tried to navigate his bike down the aisle I was standing in. I had to move out of the way to let him past. I eventually just walked out unimpeded. Maybe I didn't look the part because I wasn't in a speed suit. I still have money to spend on a new bike. It's a shame. After experiences like this and others I'm increasingly thinking about going with one of the direct-to-consumer bike brands like Canyon or Rose. read more

I was looking for a new road bike and found the one I wanted online. Actually, I found RA Cycles and all the options they had to offer. After waiting for Specialized to come thru on a bike, they still weren't able to with what I wanted, so BMC was the next option. And there it was, on RA Cycles site. I ordered the bike on Wednesday evening, on Thursday I touched base to see what the shipping was like as I'm only a couple hours out of the city. But I received a quick reply that it would be shipped out that day. Got a shipping email later that day, and Friday it was at my house. I couldn't be happier with the speedy service, especially for not even being there in person. If you need it, and they have it, don't hesitate. Do they have some seriously discounted bikes??? Buyer beware. I tried to return some electronic shifters that didn't work. I was told that R&A does not accept returns on electronic parts. This is not found on their website. After a good 10 years of taking a heavy chromoly mountain bike on rides of over 100 miles (12 hours!) across the region it was time to get a road bike. While in Italy I had rented a Pinarello Gan bike on a much speedier 60-mile three-hour excursion and an up to 14% grade 40-mile scenic struggle so I considered that a thorough test ride. R&A is one of very few Tri State dealers of that brand so I figured it was a good place to start. Felix took me on an extensive digital catalog tour of bikes in my price range that left my head spinning but well-informed. I checked out a few other area stores' online catalogs but R&A had the best deal for bikes in my rare required size (60cm). I contacted Felix about the bike I had selected and he quickly located it and assembled it for me within two days. It was the exact same model and size I had ridden in Italy. Thinking I would merely pick up the assembled bike and maybe have my pedals attached, I was pleasantly surprised when Felix went the extra mile and measured every last centimeter of my stature and my feet and got me properly set up saddle and cleat-wise. While I had been riding with cleats for years in spin classes I was new to using them on an outdoor bike. Shockingly, through Felix's measurements, I learned I had been positioning my Look cleats entirely wrong for years! I look forward to seeing how those classes go now that I know the correct placement. Lastly Felix introduced me to the entire team and gave me a tour of R&A's repair shop as well. I can't speak more highly of the professionalism of Felix and this entire store. read more

DO NOT SHOP AT R & A CYCLES. FUCK EM!!!. If yelp allowed me to give them no star, I would. My partner and I visited this store last week and were literally greeted outside the door with "Bikes start at $1900". My partner and I were in total shock. We are both black and brown and thought, wow, so blatant with it. If we were white individuals, we would have never been approached this way from outside the store. My partner was eager to leave once she heard what had just came out of this woman's mouth. I decided to go in (with no intentions of purchasing a bike now) and take a look since I knew they had a plethora of bikes. As we looked around the shop, the same woman pointed to a bike I called out and said "that's $2200". I laughed and thought to myself, wow, only if she knew that my budget was $2500 and I already own a $3,000 bike (purchased from Sids). Smh. After a few moments of realizing how prejudice and racist she was, my partner and I decided to leave the shop. This hasn't been the first time I've heard or have experienced something like this from this establishment. But to personally experience this at times like these with my partner was even more heartbreaking. The 'Worst' place to buy ANYTHING bicycle related! Maybe 20 years ago when there weren't shops as established, resource laden or the internet, being the 'resource' ocean that it's become! However, this place has TERRIBLE customer service, an owner, Phil who has ZERO personality and won't engage if you ask any REAL questions or require ACTUAL assistance! His staff is exactly the same and one staff member in particular, Felix, is the BIGGEST PHONY in the world! He smokes, doesn't look after himself properly yet promotes cycling, conducts fittings and used to have 'group' rides in Prospect Park, as well as offering advice to 'prospective' young riders! Would you take advice from someone who they, themselves aren't practicing what they preach! I mention this because it all 'ties' in to this cycling shop, who they all are and what they're about: Taking your money but not necessarily offering you what you really need or any customer satisfaction! 20 years ago I knew about them and yet, I went back recently to purchase some Assos bib knickers, which were offered at a good price! However, I was very hesitant before doing business with R&A again! 20 years prior, for instance, I brought in my custom Titanium bike because it was having headset issues. They made it WORSE! I had to bring it somewhere else to make it right! I should've learned! This time, I did! Two months ago as I previously mentioned, I purchased a pair of Assos bib knickers and the sale went well. However, when I attempted to buy an Assos winter jacket, that's where the 'good' old R&A reared it's ugly head! They had me go back to the shop in Brooklyn, three times because they keep back stock in a warehouse and the items I was interested in were there! Well, the second day I tried a top that was interesting but they wanted to show me more items, so I returned a third day. They said or I should say, Sheila said I could compare and see which ones I preferred best! Ultimately, Dennis takes most of the blame because he said the items I originally called about were IN STOCK AT THE STORE! They weren't! Well, on the third day, I arrived a little late and Sheila and Phil were gone! I tried on the other jackets they brought from their warehouse. The Assos jacket I tried on the second day, which I wanted to buy all of a sudden, couldn't be found! That was Wednesday, two days after Halloween, 2022. I called Thursday and Friday, seeking that 'mysterious' missing too that I actually held in my hands and tried on! Sheila said it may have gone to their California store but I called and it didn't! I was told by R&A in California that the Brooklyn R&A store had 2 in stock, in my size! I called back Sheila to share this with her! She because indignant, clearly upset that I did some homework, starting raising her voice, speaking over me and being nasty! I interrupted her to say this is no way to treat a customer and at that point, I was 3 days in, over an hours drive to Brooklyn for me, one way and one day, 3 1/2 hours traveling on the bus and train! I was upset! Sheila refused to acknowledge any responsibility or liability for my wasted time, money, resources and the way she was 'indignantly' treating me! She kept claiming that no one knew where the jacket was that I tried in and wanted ti buy, despite it still showing as a stock item! I told her to just 'sell' it ti someone else and hung up the phone! Please people, if you live cycling, biking, value your time, money and sanity, PLEASE go somewhere else! Those positive reviews are people who deal with F&A online and never have to SEE or DEAL DIRECTLY with Phil or any of his employees! You have been forewarned! read more

Nevertheless the las two times I have went to R&A cycles, off the top of their heads they don't have what I'm looking for after I describe what it is. This bike shop is a JOKE. HARD PASS. I bought a Kryptonite U-lock here last summer after Bike Jumble; this is generally a banal and normal occurrence, ok? They should've been able to handle this in under 15 mins, even if slammed. So, the old man working the counter is rude to my male companion, goads him with sexist bullshit, and refuses to install the mount that comes with the lock to my bike. Meanwhile, the shop is empty, there's no other pressing matter for them to attend to--so I don't get the attitude. When I basically had to DEMAND that they put the mount for the lock that I JUST BOUGHT FROM THEM on my bike frame, he acquiesced, and had some random mechanic take my bike in the back to do it. Turns out, it was improperly mounted, up high on the seat tube just under the saddle, and made riding with the lock on impossible. At this point, I'm PISSED. Like, dude, come onnnn. Took it back after less than 1 block of "WTF-is-this-safe?" riding, and they installed it on the top tube--ok fine whatever. Well, it fucking FELL OFF while I was riding home later in the day. Like WHAT THE HELL YOU ALL ARE TOO GOOD THEN TOO INCOMPETENT TO INSTALL A DAMN BIKE LOCK MOUNT? Seriously don't waste your time or money here with these clowns. Plenty of way cooler, nicer, more reasonable and helpful shops in the area. read more

Purchased a bike online from them and it was great experience. Website showed what sizes were and were not in stock but I called and confirmed the size I wanted was in stock. I placed the order online and requested a specific stack height. They emailed and confirmed the next day that mechanic would build bike with my desired stack height. Received bike 6 days later via Fedex ground. It was packaged well and everything looks like it was assembled and adjusted prior to shipment. I put on the front wheel and handle bar and it rides great. Their price was a little high but with current shortages of bikes and bike parts I think it was a good deal. read more

This bike shop is the most dishonest bike shop around. They claimed to have the Biggest sale in R&A history and when I approached them in person. They trend to show me a previously used or returned product after I did a closed inspection on the bike frame that I'm interested to find out it's not in a brand new condition due to some wore marks and scratches on the derailleur hanger and guess what the salesperson said? It's what it is. The bike was not in the original box and the accessories bag with headset was ripped open and the salesperson still claimed it's a unopen item. And certain components that was listed at the website as specification is Not available as they referred to the term "specification are subject to changed". Therefore they quoted another $350 for the item that was supposed to be included with the product which is the custom saddle. They changed their website the day right after I posted this on Facebook. What a outstanding scam job they've done. Just like others said, unless you're buying a $10,000 bike or more, otherwise save yourself sometimes and stay away from them. They will often treat you like a second citizen or joke and you will feel like you're humiliated by them or prejudiced. read more

Have been going to this shop since I was a kid. In the old days the dog was ALOT bigger and the neighborhood was not as posh as it is today. The neighborhood in the seventies was working class Puerto Rican, American Indian and Afro-American, then white. Caucasians were the minority in those days and were outnumbered 10 to 1 on 5th Ave. The shop used to be smaller than the hardware store until they switched spots. I'm sure it was difficult to build a business back then that sold bikes to cyclists who were a rather rare and strange breed, and almost exclusively white. I used to walk in there once a week and stare at the ceiling. A beautiful rainbow of matte fluorescent and glistening chrome frames dangled from the ceiling. They were aligned in perfect rows from wall to wall and back again...and to me each one told its own story. This shop introduced cycling to a demographic that never would have been exposed. They sponsored a racing team with quite a few non-white-privileged members, which is rare even by today's standards, but back then was almost unheard of. This shop is the reason why I went to college in Boulder Colorado, why I started racing and speed skating...and probably why all of my close friends for my entire life have been cyclists. Fast forward to today, and R&A is looked at like the devil by all the gentrifiers in the neighborhood who can't see the Grandfather/Father/Son roots. This isn't some big corporate chain store, it's a store with humble beginnings that survived, thrived and gave back. Phil is no longer the curmudgeon he used to be. Sheila will never try to up-sell you or steer you wrong when asked for advice. I would recommend you give this place a shot. It is hands down the best store in the TriState area and they have everything (except inexpensive kids bikes). And for me, there are only a few frames tucked away in the corner of the room, but I still imagine them all there just like yesterday. read more

Tried purchasing a saddle from R&A last week. Received an order confirmation from them and payment was made. Heard nothing for several days then placed a follow up call to the warehouse. They indicated that their inventory system showed one unit available but they could not find the saddle in the warehouse. They asked me to call back in a few days to see if they could find it. I called back in a few days and they still could not locate the saddle in their warehouse. As I write this, they are processing an order cancellation to refund me my payment. This was my one and only experience with this company. I will not be back. read more

I can't say good enough things about this place along with the folks I've met there (Sheila, Felix, Luis etc). I recently got a road bike from them after doing extensive research myself and talking to multiple bike shops in NYC. They were the only bike shop I felt that wasn't trying to gaslight or pressure me into buying a bike I didn't want. They have an incredible selection of frames, equipment and top notch customer service and support. Easily the best selection I've found at the moment in NYC. After I got the bike, I quickly got the upgrade bug. I first got a wahoo bolt along with the speed/cadence sensors. After a week of use I was fed up with the syncing issues I had with the Bolt. Sheila was nice enough to let me return the unit (many other bike shops wouldn't) and let me get the edge 830. I also got a pair of Vector 3 pedals and they installed them on the spot. Couldn't have been happier. A week later I got into a nasty crash which basically broke my handlebars and my front rim. When I called to tell the store about the accident the first thing they asked me was if I was ok. The second thing they recommended was bringing the bike for a frame inspection. I then decided to get new handlebars and wheels from R&A (again the best selection at the best prices I could find in NYC). I can not tell you all how many times I called the store to ask questions about different handlebars and wheels and how patient Sheila and Felix were with me. I even got the corporate folks to expedite a set of wheels for me from their California store to NYC so I could get my bike back sooner rather than later. It was literally the best customer experience I have had in almost any retail environment. No hard upsell, just facts and advice. To anyone getting serious about road/aero/tt/mtb biking. I really can not recommended this store enough if you are in NYC. They have the widest selection, the most competitive pricing and most importantly insane patience.
