I called up after getting my chain fixed at another shop that I have had bad experiences with. My bike was skipping and it was basically unrideable at higher gears. Over the phone, David let me know that the first place was supposed to replace the "X" and I should go back and get that done. From that first phone call, I knew that Dixon's was legit and trying to help fellow cyclists, not trying to make a quick buck. I ended up waiting and coming in the next week when they'd have the part. I dropped my bike off and let David work his magic while I went to work. After a few hours I came back, and retrieved it. I forgot to bring cash, so I said I'd be back and would leave the bike. He said he trusted me, that I should take it, and give it a test ride before I come back with the money. Again, he showed me that this was a place of trust and really made me confident in him. The fix was perfect, and it's good to know that this place is Black-owned. It will be the shop that I go to from now on. Despite it being a bit of a walk, I appreciate the service, quality, and relationship here. read more

My son goes into Dixon's bikes periodically to get his scooter fixed. And this past Saturday he went in and they were having a customer appreciation fair. He randomly put in a raffle for a bike. He won it. How exciting. We picked it up today and this bike is beautiful. My son was ecstatic. My son's face was priceless. D the owner was so polite so nice and so helpful prior to this experience. Dixon's Bicycle Shop has been around for as long as I can remember (and that's quite a while). It's a Jamaican-run, family-owned, community-oriented local business filled with folks who are really excited about bikes. There's lots of info available in the front: maps, events, groups, trips, and so on as well as free air for use (you really don't even have to ask or talk to people, but be nice). When I brought my bike out for some winter riding after a bit (cough!) of a hiatus, my brake popped off as I cruised downhill. I brought it here. They fixed her up, even greased her sad chain out of courtesy, and now she rides like a dream again. Laid back, fast, friendly, and inexpensive. read more

Nine years ago (2014) my wife and I joined the Park Slope Food Coop -- and just up the street I found (Dave) Dixon's Bicycle Shop. I always found a welcome there, whether I was just browsing or needed a repair or info. Dave strikes me as a good-humored, no nonsense type of guy who knows a lot about bikes (after five decades of service). I've been to bigger bike stores -- one in California had an oval track so customers could test out the bikes; pretty cool! -- and other innovative, high-tech shops with young proprietors. But I always come back to Dixon's. I plan to buy my next bike there -- Dave suggested I wait until autumn when I'll get more for my money. read more

I used to use this shop alot when I worked in the area(because I kindof had to). The repairs were patch jobs- the same thing would go wrong with the bike again. They were OK patch jobs- it would hold for a bit, which is why I'm still giving them 3 stars. The guy is kindof unpleasant, but he's not terrible to deal with. Two good things- he can change a bad tire pretty quick, and the repairs are pretty cheap. If you need an emergency patch, or you want to buy merch, this is an ok shop. They also don't take advantage of you by selling you products or services that you don't need. Chris was extremely helpful in getting me out of a jam. I have been going to Dixons since I was a kid and to this day I won't let anyone else work on my bike, even though I now live in bay ridge. Worth the ride over. Not only do they know what they are doing (family owned and operated, been around since 1966) this is the only bike shop I know that will never ever make you feel bad about having a shitty bike or not knowing about bikes. Entirely unpretentious. They also don't cheat people. I went in there several years ago with a fixie I had bought on Craigslist that needed some adjustments and they set it up for me for 20 bucks. Seeing that I didn't know exactly what it needed done, many other shops would have just charged me for a full set up. Will be customer for life, and worth the ride over from bay ridge. read more

Someone tried to steal my bike, got spooked, and ran off after taking the bolt off my front wheel. It was left disassembled but luckily all in tact. Finally got it to the bike shop today and the guy reassembled it within 5 minutes. He also tightened up everything, along with putting some air in the tires. Quick, easy, and fast. Not expensive at all, no gimmicks. Family owned business, too! Will be back again for sure. read more

These guys are the best. I have been bringing bikes in here for tuneups, flat tires, gear work, and other repairs for 15 or 20 years. Always reasonable prices on parts, friendly service, no upselling, and repairs that last. Particularly recommend them if you have a vintage bike that you need to get back in shape. Laid-back, friendly place where you always feel welcome, no hardcore cyclist attitude. My only experience with buying a bike from them was with a used folding bike several years ago. The chain kept falling off, turns out it had been in an accident and one of the gear wheels was bent. They took it back and gave me a full refund, which they didn't really have to do because the bike was being sold as is. You can trust these guys! read more

Thank you Dixon's for letting me leave my bike at the shop while I was at work and for fixing my gears! My gears had been messed up for awhile. Anytime I switched to a very high or low gear, I'd hear an awful scraping sound. Eventually they stopped switching properly altogether. Dixon's worked their magic and now they switch so smoothly and perfectly! My riding experience has been wholly enhanced! And to top things off, since I didn't have cash at the time of check-out (it only cost $10 which didn't hit the minimum for a credit card), he said I could just come back another day to pay. Very cooool neighborhood bike shop, family-run with kids running around and tinny music coming over some unseen radio. There's a penny farthing hanging from the ceiling and a mural of the same outside! They notice their repeat customers and adjust labor costs accordingly. Otherwise prices seem average. They're not the warmest, no, but they get shit done. If particular shit cannot be done by them, they'll tell you and not talk your ear off about alternatives. If you need something simple with no extra parts, it'll run you $10-$15 (new tubes, brake cables, etc.) and you can probably get your baby back within the hour. If you need a part they'll order it for you. Don't expect fawning attention, because these guys have so much neighborhood business they don't need to care. It helps that there's no other bike shop within walking distance (especially if your bike is out of commission... and you need to walk). read more

Nope, sorry. I tried - twice. First, I go in on a Wed in the early afternoon and there are no other customers. I liked the looks of the shop and wanted to start my bike search here. I'm inside for about 25 minutes. No one looks at me. I walk near the back and try to get some help. There are a few people hanging out and talking to each other behind the counter, but I can't get their attention and one of the girls rolls her eyes at me when I say, "excuse me. " I go back out to the bikes and make a mental note of the ones I like to come back another time and ask about them. I came back to the bike shop on Saturday after hitting a few friendly places in the area. No one comes to help me. We wait about 15 minutes. My boyfriend goes to the back and grabs the attention of one of the sales guys who then comes out and stands in front me. He huffs and says, "yes?!" Then just stands there. I asked questions and tried to look at a couple of things - I know very little about bikes, but most of the time he didn't know the answer or was looking off in another direction and I had to wait until he'd pay attention to me again to try to pull an answer out of him. We left frustrated and without a bike :( The selection was okay. They were out of most of the lightweight and high gear models, but had some of the lower end commuter fuji and jenson. There was a bike I liked quite a bit, but the service was so bad that I 'm going to look at it from another dealer. Disappointed. I like supporting family owned local shops. There are still many other local places to choose from, I know, but there's no reason why they couldn't have treated me better and allowed me to be a customer. read more

I've taken my bike to a multitude of bike shops in the area. There are ones that do a great job, but take way too long and cost way too much. Then, there are those that cost a little (or sometimes more than the others), and end up doing damage that requires further work and maintenance. Dixon's is the only amazing bike shop I've been to in the surrounding area, if not the entire city. They are inexpensive, quick, and always do an amazing job. They're kind, take the time to explain what they did and why, and show you how to make minor repairs (if you're interested). This is the only place I'll go, regardless of where I am in the city. read more

All around class acts. These guys saved my friend a ton of money on a tune up by pointing out that the more expensive tuneup would be more than the (old) bike was worth. I own a vintage girls Shwinn & have never, ever had the kind of help anywhere else, that I receive at Dixon's. I strongly urge anyone who has a vintage bicycle not to waste your time elsewhere, head straight to Dixon's. I had a run of flat tyres recently & went to my closest bike store on 5th, I won't say who. There they were always extremely friendly behind the counter but their technician didn't have the attention to detail needed for my bike. Every time he repaired a flat, my gears were always weird. Mostly they'd slip, sometimes they were hard to change. The last time he changed a flat, after 10 minutes of riding, the gears would not change at all, it was super hard to pedal & there was a 'bump' in my ride. I'd had enough, so I went the extra distance to Dixon's. There they told me that lots of places are ok at fixing new bikes, but very few are good with old ones. He said the previous shop hadn't set up my gears & my wheel was out of alignment! He fixed their mistakes all for $8. I was thrilled! Dixon's have always been the best price for repairs (you could say they're cheap. Today my flat was meant to cost $12, but in the end he did it for $10!). My bike is always at it's best after a trip to Dixon's, I'm sure yours will be too. read more

Dixon's is a nice, homely bike shop that is family owned. My friend and I sometimes come in here to look at the penny farthings and a tad more modern bicycles. Prices are fair, for you all know you can get ripped off in X or Y store. It's right next to the Food Co-op. The service is a bit slow and they don't have tools! When I first got my bicycle I came here to buy a bell ($5, not bad and it still works with my luck!) and wanted to put it on right then and there. It took about 20 minutes to find a screwdriver but I was well on my way. Too bad this place looks like it's always closed, I'd like to stop by here more often. read more

I was really surprised to see that Dixon's only had three stars on here. The main complaint of unhappy Yelpers seems to be that the customer service is lacking and people aren't jumping to help them. I've spent a lot of time at Dixon's, and you definitely need to walk up, grab someone, and tell them how to help you- they're not going to rush over and hold your hand- but once I've gotten into a conversation with anyone there, they're great. I found everyone to be honest and knowledgable. My girlfriend and I were each looking for bikes recently- new ones for less than 300 bucks (which is not an easy task). Dixon's didn't have any that matched our criteria, so they ordered us each a cheaper version of one of the $500 bikes in their store. They assembled them, switched out the handlebars for a different kind that we preferred, and gave one of us a new seat because the original one didn't feel right- no extra charge for any of that. They also registered our bikes for us and attached my girlfriend's lock to her bike for her. Before I bought my new bike, I stopped in a few times for tune-ups on my old crappy bike. It was always fast and free. And good. I went to three or four other bike shops before stopping at Dixon's in my search for a new bike, and now it's the only place I go. Decent prices, staff who seem to actually care that you have a good experience on your bike, and a relaxed/non-salesy atmosphere. As long as you're not timid and don't mind asking for help, I don't see any downside. EDIT: the back wheel on my girlfriend's bike started clicking and getting wobbly. it turned out to be a pretty dangerous mis-assembly (is that a word?). the back wheel could have fallen off pretty easily... i think they didn't properly tighten things up when they put it together. then the guy who was fixing the issue told her that it probably wasn't her fault- someone was probably trying to steal her back wheel and loosened all the parts. whiiich is unlikely because she keeps her bike in her garage. so, i'm knocking them down a star. could be an honest mistake, but it makes me nervous. read more

They don't carry Trek, but when I brought in a sad old folding bike, they got it back in foldable order. When my seat was stolen, they sold me a replacement for $12 because I said I just wanted something cheap for now. And they threw in an improvised drive-chain seat lock for free! Sure there is often a line and it's hard to tell if they are being nice or not, but I've decided they are reasonable and good. Also, they rent bikes! Also, they don't have a "fixie" attitude like at bicycle habitat or one of those hipster places. read more

When we went in we were told it was no longer available and was out of stock "everywhere"? Being skeptical we checked around and another bike shop (bicyclestationbrooklyn.com) ordered us the one she wanted right away! The sales guy over at dixons had no reason to give us false info. Great bike shop. When you walk in, I can nearly guarantee that no one is going to approach you and offer to help, but if you walk to the back, a knowledgable employee will be glad to help you. They have a great inventory and really know what they're doing. One example of what made me love Dixon's so much: I went in one day looking for bike lights. They only had rear lights and told me to come back a few days later when they got front lights in. When I went back, they had the lights as promised, and I picked out a $10 one. I only had a credit card, and I guess that wasn't up to their minimum, so I told them I'd be back another day with cash. The guy told me to just take the light and drop off $10 the next time I was walking by. Amazing. :) read more
