UGH! The server acted like I was a major hassle to her day and there wasn't even a line behind me. She acted like I should know all the details of their menu and it was a real hassle to explain it to me. When I ordered the Cafe Au Lait she told me I'd have to make it myself: they'd give me a cup of hot milk and I can go make the coffee myself over at the coffee bar. It took FOREVER for them to bring our coffees (I ended up order the Cafe Latte because I didn't want to make my coffee) and a reheated-in-the-microwave-ham/cheese-croissant thingy. read more

I am basing my review on my overall experiences here. Today I ordered the mac n cheese (comes with garlic bread) with a side salad. The bread was the star and for $10 this was disappointing. The mac n cheese had a good flavor profile but was not creamy and had milk at the bottom of the container like it had been poured on to keep it from drying out when being reheated. Salad was typical. From previous visits my favorite is the Rex's revenge. It is a chicken Caesar salad sandwhich, really good. I have also ordered king cakes for Mardi gras here. Not the same as New Orleans but the best I've had in Tucson so far. What I am learning is any of their sandwiches are probably a better choice because the bread is awesome. Customer service is good, lines are long so expect to wait. But you can order online or over the phone. read more

Never had a bad meal here. Everything is made fresh on site and prepped each day. Amazing on site prepared pastries- (don't leave without getting a fruit tart or a spicy ginger cookie). I miss this place so badly! I moved and I crave their wonderful gazpacho they serve in the hot Tucson summers. Topped with fresh avocado and your choice of bread baked that morning. I love the days when they sell fresh baked pretzels with hot mustard and Challah on Fridays. SO good. Their Greek salad is amazing and Chad's Choice (hot chicken breast on sourdough with green chiles) is delicious. Their ciabatta and jalapeño cheddar loaves are tasty crunchy and a carbaholics dream. OK everything is good here. All locations are locally owned by Shelby and Randi Collier and they know what they're doing. read more

I feel bad doing this as I'm not typically the type to leave bad reviews, but I'm just so disappointed and frustrated, I feel like i should explain my experience. Earlier tonight, I ordered some chicken tortilla soup, as I've always enjoyed it in the past. This was a to go order so I didn't actually see what the soup looked like until it got home. To put it bluntly, it looked disgusting. The soup wasn't the right color, as it was greenish and watery rather than the orangey yellow a chicken tortilla soup should be and has been in the past. The soup was filled with herbs. While I understand that herbs are added during the cooking process, there was an unnatural amount for one serving and the soup just smelled HEAVILY of herbs and not like soup. The only indication this even was chicken tortilla soup was upon mixing it up, I managed to find some chicken and tortilla pieces, but honestly most of the soup was just watery broth and herbs. I'm honestly shocked anybody could pour that in a cup and think it was fine to serve, it wasn't even really edible and tasted awful. I think if I'd been actually eating in the store, that never would have been served to me. I understand how hard everyone is working right now and I know the staff is trying their best, but I just cannot believe this was served. I'm fairly certain this was the very bottom of a batch of soup. What I don't understand is not just asking us to wait if there wasn't a fresh batch ready yet, I don't understand serving something functionally inedible. We would've just waited. I don't like to complain, but I'm honestly really unhappy with this and it makes me not want to go to this location anymore, since I'm not exactly excited by the prospect of paying for crappy soup. I don't know how often the restaurants read these reviews, but I just hope they'll see this and fix the issue so no one else has this kind of experience. read more

I recently volunteered to bring bread to a staff potluck and I knew I had to do something a little more special than Trader Joe's, Sprouts, or Safeway. I picked up a few baguettes, a focaccia, and a loaf of the plain Irish Soda bread (heaven!) Beyond Bread never disappoints! My famished coworkers gobbled all the bread, much to my dismay- I wanted some leftovers to bring home! I visited the east side location and am lucky to live by the central location. Coffee drinks are well made. Breads are always fresh and high quality. The deserts are to die for. I've had many a sandwich as well - mostly vegetarian, and recommend them all! I like their special sandwiches and soup of the day. My favorite bread has got to be their pretzel bread, and my favorite soup is the clam chowder. Lunch time gets quite busy though. Best bread in the area by far. I didn't like the salads that much, but they give very large portions. I think they are known best for their bread. They have decent customer service. We ate lunch on-site & bought a seasonal bread Pumpkin & Cranberry that proved to be our breakfast for a few mornings as we traveled the state. That bread was fantastic & a smart buy. Delicious with coffee on our hotel room's terrace. It didn't need refrigeration & traveled well.- even my 'what is this stuff' husband enjoyed it. For lunch I had the Gobble me Up - way too big - I couldn't eat even 1/2 of it. He had the Ashlee Albacore & was full. Prices were great. There was a lot of confusion behind the counters taking & handling the orders - we waited in line about 5 minutes (4 people before us) & another 15 to get our lunches. Beyond Bread is a locally owned restaurant with two locations in Tucson. They have a variety of breads to purchase and yummy bakery items if you're in a morning rush. One of my favorites are their huge salted pretzels. Better than anything you can get in a mall food court. They have a wide variety of sandwiches too. Be hungry. They can be huge. Self serve drinks. Dine inside or out when we have cooler days. Their soup changes daily and since we were there on a Friday it was clam chowder. It was good but nothing memorable and it wasn't very hot when it was served. It came with four generous pieces of bread of your choice. I chose the multigrain. It is open dining so it tends to be noisy. You can also get your food to go. Service is normally fast and friendly. read more

This two star review is reflective of the quality of the food and beverage that I was served and not of the zero star service I received today. I ordered the Avi's Avo sandwich and a mimosa. I leaned that they were out of Prosecco so I asked for a beer instead. After paying I heard a different cashier offer to my friend who also ordered a mimosa that someone would walk next door and purchase Prosecco so she could have her mimosa. I asked my cashier if I could reverse my transaction and get the mimosa I originally asked for. She asked her colleague how to make the adjustment and both cashiers ended up telling me not to worry about it. I literally asked if they were sure and offered to pay the difference. They assured me it was no problem and let me know they'd bring it to my table. Later in the middle of eating my side salad, a different person found me at my table outside and gave me a mimosa but told me I had to come back inside the restaurant to pay an additional $1.75. Immediately I told her I would pay it as I previously had offered but also said "this is really not okay" and explained how two different cashiers told me not to worry about it. She then blamed the cashier for being new and insisted that I had to leave my meal at my table outside and go inside to talk to her manager (not sure why he didn't come to me). After covering up my food, putting on my mask, and walking inside, the manager was waiting for me and explained that he ALREADY CHARGED ME MORE MONEY. This is what I'm most upset about. No business should ever charge a person's card without their permission. I would have paid the difference in cash OR asked for the beer I originally paid for instead. Neither of these were given as an option for me. At the end of the day the food was disappointing. The ciabatta bread was rock solid and difficult to eat AND the mimosa that caused so much unnecessary drama was room temperature. I had to water it down with ice. I'm sad to say I will support different Tucson businesses from now on. read more

This place should be called "Beyond Rudeness" or "Ergot Bread" since the man in charge decided to take his attitude out on my family and they sold us past due bread. My mother and I were once fans of their bread. We bought a loaf of "supposedly fresh" rye only to find mold on the loaf. We decided to return it. Once there, we requested for the manager and my mother asked for a new loaf. He shrugged his shoulders and denied us an exchange while announcing it was her fault the bread went moldy. He then said that their bread has no preservatives while implying that mom should learn to store her bread appropriately. If the bread is being sold fresh then why is it molding withing 14 hours? I then decided to give the man some wisdom. I looked him in the face, and calmly said: "If your bread has no preservatives then your bread will have a shorter shelf life. Don't try to play beat around the bush and tell me to accept molded bread." He was taken aback and said only this one time would he accept our return. The bread they sell could be days old at point of sale, the man in charge has no customer service skills, and the price vs. quality in food does not match up. I will stick with Subway. read more

Ummmm... BLT?! YES PLEASE!! I had two of these babies within 7 days. The sandwich contained the most amazing and crispy, bacon...and plently of it. This is one of the few times I've purchased a BLT and not felt ripped off. The bread, offered a nice crunchy crust without breaking your teeth. Fast, friendly, and efficient service at this location. :) I love Avi's Avo, Brad's Beef, and Curt's Club. I also like their Curried Chicken Salad. I love that they make most of their bread in house, on a daily basis, with simple ingredients! No weird preservatives or emulsifiers! However, they did tell me that they don't make the croissants in house. They get them shipped from a European bakery. That is probably why you won't find the ingredients for the croissants on their bread ingredient list. They are frozen when they arrive, but they bake them. I do wish they made them in house, but I realize they are labor intensive, and time consuming to make! Awesome food....much better than Panera Bread. :) read more

I know Beyond Bread has been reviewed ad nauseum, but I feel compelled to add my two cents. Beyond Bread was one of the first places I ate at when I started traveling to Tucson for business; it was also one of the first places I took my wife to when we visited Tucson to explore moving here; and it is one of the places I take visitors to and recommend to tourists looking for good, basic sandwiches, salads and desserts. The following can be classified as awesome at Beyond Bread: - any of their breads - the carrot cake - the "death by chocolate" cookie - the cinnamon buns (ask to have them warmed up, and then put butter on them) - the seasonal panatone (Italian dessert bread - slice, lightly toast, butter, then dunk in hot chocolate) - the Cool Down salad - the pasta salad served as a side with almost any sandwich - the orange raisin danish It gets a little crazy around lunch (they turn off the free WiFi between 10 and 2 so people won't take up tables for long periods of time) - I like 7 in the morning about or about 7 in the evening to come here. I would order a sandwich with just cheese and bunch of stuff on it. Yumm.... then one day, the Beyond Bread folks started automatically applying honey mustard onto the sandwiches. Umm....didn't I mention that I reaaaaaaallly don't like honey mustard?? I'd ask them nicely to NOT put any of that stuff on while ordering the sandwiches but the honey mustard always seems to find itself all spreaded out inside the sandwich.... OH! I forgot to mention that I broke my tooth there before. Yep. Couple weeks later, I was joining my friend for coffee at the Beyond Bread. I discovered that Beyond Bread folks were kind enough to include specific warnings in the menu that "you may break a tooth while eating their bread!" Yay. Today I ordered Cam's Classic..half sandwich. The description of this sandwich is as follows: Certified Angus® Roast Beef, lettuce, horseradish sauce on a Garlic Italian Roll. There was only 1 slice of RB and a VERY small dab of horseradish "sauce" with NO LETTUCE. I don't understand why this place is so popular. I literally ate a small slice of RB on a piece of bread. Even the sandwiches at Circle K have more meat on them...It looked naked.. PATHETIC!! They should be ashamed to call this a sandwich.. couldn't even taste the horseradish....VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!! And management, I hope you read this and revise how your employees make your sandwiches. read more

Just had the weirdest experience at the Speedway/Wilmot location. I met a friend and her two small children (2 yr. old and 3.5 yr. old). We placed our order and made our way to a table outside. We had just unloaded all the paraphernalia that goes along with young children, grabbed a highchair and started to talk. The children were well-behaved and engrossed in their toys at the table when an older woman came up to the table and in a loud, cranky voice told us, "You can't sit there!" We looked at each other, unsure what was happening. "Oh, alright," we replied, thinking we'd placate this emotionally unstable person and she'd go away. "I said move!" she yelled, at which point the other tables around us stopped to see what was going on. At that moment, the waiter arrived with our breakfast. I asked, "Are you kidding?" "Does it look like I'm kidding? she screamed, taking her sun hat off and slapping it against her leg. "I'm going to garden here and you're in the way!" We looked to the waiter who mouthed, "I'm sorry," and nodded for us to move inside. "I'm going to have blowers and all kinds of equipment out here and you're in the way." Again, the waiter mouthed, "I'm so sorry." The table next to us got up and left. The woman then turned to the waiter and said, "This section needs to be closed off, right now!" The waiter replied, "Ok, I'll get right on it, Carol." Confused, we got up and started packing. We relocated to a table inside. As the waiter put our food down, he was very apologetic and explained that she was the owner's mother, and again told us how sorry he was. We ate our food and talked for a while. The woman moved her recumbent bike next to the table where we were outside, where it stayed as long as we were there, about an hour and a half. She performed no "gardening" and no other equipment appeared the whole time we were there. Needless to say, it was a very unsettling experience. Never a bad experience, and their salads are very very filling. I have gluten/wheat allergies, so I stick to their huge salads for a pain-free experience. My favorite salads are the Angus Management and the Cool Down South. You can order most of their sandwiches "garden style" on a bed of greens or wrapped in lettuce. As always, cross-contamination is a possibility so order at your own risk. I've mentioned my allergy a couple of times and was assured they would prepare my salad away from the sandwiches, so it doesn't hurt to try. Even when this place is packed I never feel like I wait too long in line or for my food to appear the table. Just finding somewhere to sit is the most difficult task, but the staff is quick to clear off tables when patrons leave. read more

I just found my new favorite breakfast place. Last Saturday, my husband and I headed over to Bookman's with two big bags to trade. Before we left, some latent memory pinged me: "Beyond Bread serves breakfast." I checked on line and (heavens open, angel's sing LAAAA!) So it is. So while Bookman's was totaling our store credit, we enjoyed omelets al fresco at Beyond Bread. The usually raucous entry was calm. I got to take my time perusing the menu AND ogling the breads and pastries. For moi: Breakfast Bruschetta (tomato, fresh basil, parmesan). The hubs ordered the Old Pueblo (chicken, green chiles, avocado, provolone). We both ordered potato pancakes and thick wheat bread. At 9-ish on Saturday morning we found a cool coffeehouse vibe. We were lulled by the light jazz, intoxicated by the blooming jasmine on the patio, ready to start our weekend on a wave of cool and calm. Don't get me wrong. I have loved this "Tucson Born and Bread" establishment since my first Kalid's Kurry -- chicken salad made with chicken, celery, scallion, curry powder, salt, white pepper, mayonnaise, raisins, jicama and lemon juice, served with toasted almonds and mixed greens in a wheat pita. Later, after giving up meat, I gorged on Carmela's Caprese: fresh mozzarella, tomato, fresh basil and roasted red peppers with vinaigrette dressing on focaccia. But breakfast? Be still, my heart: (And be happy my wallet.) Cindy's Raisin Challah French Toast $5.50 3 pieces served with powdered sugar & syrup. Quinn's Quiche $3.95 Yogurt Parfait $3.95 Omelets $6.95 Served with choice of white, wheat, multi-grain or rustic toast and potato pancakes or roasted red potatoes. For those of you from outside Tucson, Beyond Bread is basically Panera Bread. You don't come here to buy bread, you come here to eat giant sandwiches, salads, and soup. I tried the Gobble me Up turkey salad and the Chicken Salad. Both had a good topping to lettuce ratio (if you like your salads topping heavy). And the salads are massive. If I had known I could, I would have ordered a half. Even my husband, who is a big eater, didn't finish his chicken salad. The quality of the food was good, but nothing about it particularly blew me away. It's your basic salad and sandwich place--reliable, lots of options, but nothing special. read more

This place is a lunchtime powerhouse that dishes up all the delectable goodies... salads, sandwiches, ect. I got the soup in a breadbowl. It was pretty darn good, but nothing compared to fisherman's warf in SF. I think Tucson is fundamentally a sandwich town: Eegees, Baggins, Bison Witches, Sausage Deli, heck even the Schlotzsky family moved here from Chicago in the late nineties (they live on the east side). This place, from the sandwiches I tried (only two, so go easy) isn't really anything special. I don't think there is a more consistent sandwich shop in town. I am not a fan of all of their sandwiches but they have some real winners on the menu. Here are some of my favorites: Dab's Delight - As a child I fell in love with Tuna Melts. As a grown-up I fell in love with Beyond Bread's version of a Tuna Melt. It's the one I compare all others to. The tuna is not your usual boring tuna with stuff like dijon mustard and parsley. The white bread of childhood Tuna Melts is replaced by super crusty whole grain wheat. The addition of extremely thinly sliced tomato and Havarti cheese makes it a really interesting and well thought out sandwich. Milton's Melt - This one sports loads of turkey, bacon, more of that super thin tomato, sharp cheddar cheese and Russian dressing on crusty Rye bread. This plethora of ingredients comes together harmoniously for one tasty sandwich. They offer special sandwiches for each day of the week but let's talk about Saturdays. My wife and I used to come here on Saturdays to get their meatball sub. It was, quite simply, the best meatball sub in town. Flavorful meatballs, zesty sauce, melting cheese, topped with a chiffonade of basil, all tucked in a soft but sturdy roll. Sadly, they removed this sandwich from the menu months ago... our Saturdays are now sadder days. Beyond Bread owners - if you are reading - I am BEGGING you to bring back the meatball sandwich. Of course, as the name implies, they go beyond the bread and offer all kinds of baked goods as well as salads, soups and even espressos in addition to the just plain silly variety of breads they offer. I hate the parking lot and it can get crowded at lunch time, so get there early have your friend decide what they want and send them scouting for a table while you wait in line to order. The food is average but dumb yuppies think this is the best place since Wall Street. Employees are yapping, stuffing their mouths or ignoring you while there's a line. Tables are left unclean. Employees are mostly acne faced un-hygenic teens (ie: cheap labor) who seemed to be picking their noses, drinking sodas, touching their hair, genital area, etc while I waited. I went to Beyond Bread with Kelly while visiting my sister in Tucson. The whole weekend, my sister's boyfriend talked this up as a great sandwich place, and it was. I was blown away by the size of the kitchen, about twice the size of the seating area, which made service almost instant. I had a basic salami sandwich, and they did it well. They warned us that this would be the big meal of the day, we couldn't plan on a big dinner later. And again they were right. Each half a sandwich was as big as a normal sandwich from somewhere else. I left the complementary chips at my sister's, because I couldn't eat them. The desserts looked fantastic, and we tried an eclair and fruit tort. We had to hold off a few hours to tackle them, but they were worth the wait. Walking in, the place looked like a standard chain to me, but don't let the polished finish of the decor fool you.
