In my opinion, this is the best Mexican bakery in Tucson. The shop is clean and you can even see the staff baking in the back, which I really enjoy. I love stopping by on weekends for a fresh, warm concha. It's also a great spot to pick up sweet treats for work since the prices are very reasonable. Favorite place for baked goods. Best empanadas and cochitos available! I like my cochitos a couple of days old....dunk them in my coffee. Better than biscotti, only way to fly..... The nice thing about this location is the courtyard. Presta Coffee, Seis, Agustin Kitchen, are all right there. Busy spot but not long wait time.... Staff always smiling and helpful. Always a good sign. Terrific people watching too! Thursday afternoon is the farmers market which is a little smaller this time of year, but autumn is just around the corner! I was so excited to eat it, but when I opened the bag, I was shocked to find the slice of cake was just thrown in there, no wrapping, no box.. nothing. Darn. This is kind of place that gives my blood sugar nightmares, but holy cow is it GOOD. The bakery items are made on site, super fresh and amazing. Walked out with a bag and sat next door with a cup of coffee and enjoyed one of my gingerbread and molasses cookies. Everything I could do to not open my bag and eat the rest of what I bought. Cookie was beautifully flavored, not overpowering and the molasses added a nice finish. And it was soft, like melt-in-your-mouth soft. Estrella Bakery part of the little Mercado shopping courtyard in Tucson. Good parking across street in front and behind location. Short walk (less than 2 mins) puts you in the courtyard. There are a couple restaurants and shops around the courtyard making for a great experience. Tables all outside in the courtyard to enjoy a nice day. Bakery and coffee employees very friendly. I'm honestly thinking I'd drive down again from San Tan Valley just to go here ... it's that good. If you are in Tucson for any reason, I'd confidently say the bakery is a MUST STOP. We've tried several donut shops in the area and it seems that after the 1st day, they are hard as a rock. Not so with La Estrella donuts. They are so tender and don't need a lot of embellishment. I really like them plain or rolled in sugar. They are so tender and delicious and we can enjoy them over several days without them becoming inedible. The staff are always so kind and they love encouraging us to try new treats. Absolutely, love this place. You can tell that everything is made fresh and with love. This is one of the best Mexican pastry places in town, and this town has a lot of them. Everything is made fresh daily, including their tortillas. To be able to walk in and grab a dozen tortillas still warm from being made that morning is amazing! Not to mention that are delicious! Their pastries and second to none. From their donuts to their Mexican pastries, this place has it all! Their pastries don't feel super heavy, greasy, and sugary like so many other places. We stumbled upon this cute bakery tucked in the corner of the Mercado San Augustin (MSA). There was a short line at noon which piqued our curiosity. There was a wrap-around glass display case of Mexican baked goods. I recognized concha and empanadas. Based on an article from Food & Wine on display, this place was known for donuts. When I spied 2 remaining in the case, I quickly snagged them along with a chocolate concha and a pig-shaped gingerbread cookies (recommendations from the server). The donut was delicious... it had the texture of a cake-donut but was still light and airy. The chocolate concha was moist. The cookie was soft and had the right amount of ginger and spice. As you can see the chocolate covered strawberries are slapped together and the cherry too. The drip, the icing... it just wasn't at all what I asked for and the execution was not worth the money. It'd be one thing if the cake itself was good but the cake wasn't anything special either. Never again will I go back here. It's safe to say I got ripped off. I would be embarrassed to give this to a client and take money for it knowing I didn't give someone quality. Save your money.
