They have the best doughnuts! Don't usually go to the actual store but at Tanias on Drexel has an assortment of doughnuts and empanadas.

This bakery has always been one of the best and a bit of a Tucson tradition. But, they have now overpriced themselves. I can't afford to shop there anymore. I used to go there 2-3 times a month. After today and paying a dollar for every item and $1.50 for a cookie, I think I'm done. I'll visit it once or twice a year during the holidays but that's it. Food City has a decent bakery and at least half the price if not more on its baked goods. Sorry, La Estrella. You were Mom's favorite but I cannot afford you anymore. Lástima. read more

My first intro to Mexican Pan Dulce was awesome. I was happy I went with a friend because, although the lady who helped us was super nice and helpful, I would've felt uncomfortable making everyone in line wait for me while I asked what things were. Let's get the cons out of the way: no signs anywhere so really you either know what stuff is or you're lost and have to ask a bunch of questions. When I was there it felt like everyone was a lifelong regular (which should tell you how delicious and fresh everything thing is!) but for the newbies or non-Tucsonans/non-Mexicans who come in like me, some signs with at least names and ideally a description would be great. Even just like a menu type sheet would be great. And I always feel like this type of place should serve like a great coffee to dip your pan dulce in but we had to make another stop for good coffee. That wasn't an option here. Everything else was great. We got an assortment of my friend's faves and even the stuff I didn't love, like the cochitos, were still very-well made and very fresh. I now understand why conchas are everyone's fave. They're delicious but not in your face with flavor, which just means that I could happily eat 27 of these subtle shells. I also loved the pink breads. I don't want to ask how they get that bright pink color, because for some things it's better to keep the mystery alive, but they were soft and slightly crumbly and the flavor was stronger than the concha's but still lightish. I have always enjoyed getting tasty empanadas and conches at La Estrella, however my last visit a few days ago left me disappointed. As usual, I ordered a dozen pumpkin empanadas and a dozen conches. Here's what I noticed: The conches (sweet bread) had shrunk in size. I asked the girl waiting on my if they had in fact shrunk and she said yes and the price was still the same. On to the empanadas - they were very different from how they normally make them. The were very puffy and appeared as though a lot of yeast was used to make them rise. The pumpkin filling had almost no taste and wasn't sweet. After tasting them, the smell and taste was terrible. I am very disappointed that La Estrella may have changed their recipe to cut costs. I doubt I will be buying at La Estrella again. read more

I've been craving churros and both google and yelp searched, this place have good reviews so I gave it a try. This location is 30mins from me but I went anyway and got some pastries, no churros because they were sold out. I have no regrets and it has become my favorite place to go. I've gone twice in the last two weeks already but still missed the churros. Their pastries are soft, moist and not super sweet! Just my taste! I got the plain glazed donut and it was great. It was a yeast donut, but definitely had some cake like consistency to it which was a bit different but also really good. I even got change back from a buck! Can't beat that. There's quite a selection of baked goods, pastries and donuts so you might want to get a box of goodies if you can't decide. We came here today to try out empanadas as we are considering that as one of the items to serve at my son's upcoming wedding to his wonderful Hispanic bride. My previous experience with their empanadas, as you can read my previous review, I was not too impressed. This visit tells me that my previous experience was an off day for them. I really am not a fan of empanadas. I've never had one that was any good. Today has changed that. We purchased all four flavors that they had: cherry, apple, pineapple, and pumpkin. For comparison, we drove 50 yards to the next block and purchased the same from Alejandro's. Alejandro's also had peach. By appearances, La Estrella's empanadas are uniform size and shape with a good brown color, not overdone or underdone. By contrast, Alejandro's empanadas were of various sizes, some small, and their colors varied from pale yellow to a darker overdone brown. La Estrella's empanadas were very tasty. The bread has a nice "pan" texture. Each of the fillings were also very good, not overly artificial, not overly sweet. Alejandro's on the other hand was like eating a bad Hostess fruit pie. The crust and bread was dense and greasy. It was not appetizing. The fillings also were not very good. Overly artificial and the flavors were off. Bottom line is, I really enjoyed La Estrella's empanadas. I even went back for seconds. And I never used to like empanadas. Alejandro's? They still do their tortillas and other pan items, like their Sonoran dog buns excellently. I just do not recommend their empanadas. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Tucson-top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. Would definitely recommend you trying it to get your own take on it. 2* = Not so good. Would not recommend at all. Waste of money. 1* = How are they still in business?
