using my trusty wabac machine, i'm finally getting around to posting our reaction to one of the newish restaurants up here on queen anne, betty.
betty is the sister restaurant to one of our favorites, crow. why they would open another restaurant, within walking (albeit very hilly walking) distance of each other is baffling to me. not that i'm going to complain since i like the kind of food these places provide: slightly fancy food at a reasonable price.
here's what we had:
scooty's appetizer: corn chowder
okay, so let me reiterate that we ate there a while ago, as in, um, june. i don't remember what this was like at all except that scooty liked it.
my appetizer: smoked trout rilletes (w/toasted walnuts, salad, horseradish cream & cornichons)
okay, i do remember this one though because it was really really good. the rillettes were different than i had expected; a lot fluffier & kind of fresh tasting. whatever, this was truly lovely, with all those different accoutrements.
scotty's entree: roasted chicken (w/corona beans & asparagus)
this is pretty much the same roasted chicken they serve @ crow, which is to say, it's awesome. & i don't even particularly like chicken. the flesh is moist, the skin is crispy & the sauce is always a savory combination of chicken drippings & herbs & it's totally the kind of thing you dip your bread into.
my entree: copper river salmon (w/fingerling potatoes green beans)
copper river, copper river... seattle has an obsession with this stuff. yeah, i understand that it's a delicacy because of it's short season & all but i guess i felt this needed more futzing than this. i just don't think that, because it's Copper River, it can just stand on it's own. & while all the vegetables were nicely cooked, again, i felt like they needed something more. this was nice but shit, even i could make this..
dessert: rhubarb upside down cake
that's right, we shared. that's been happening a lot (& will probably continue to do so) since i'm becoming less & less interested in sweet things (except for scooty. har har har). given then choice between cake & say, steak, i'll always go with the meat (heh). i'd much rather continue eating more of my *dinner* than have an additional dessert course. i don't know what's happening to me.
& to tell you the truth, this dessert isn't going to make me second-guess my natural inclinations. there was cake, there was a brown-sugary moistness & there were wispy strips of rhubarb. to me, this was nothing special.
overall, i guess i would say i was disappointed, but only because it wasn't as good as crow. this is not to say that i wouldn't go back here though. sure the food isn't as good as crow's but the location is MUCH easier to walk to, the decor & ambiance are much cozier & it's still a reasonably priced place with basically good food.
update: we went again this weekend & it was awesome. like, seriously excellent. steak frites? large, meaty, juicy, fantastic fries. crispy duck & sausage. huge but oh so moist w/delicious lentils infused with bacony goodness. also, we had to catch a movie afterwards & they stellar service made gave us plenty of time. read more
