As Cher Horowitz (from Clueless, duh) would say: What a total betty!
Can I just say that the NWSource "30 for 30 Urban Bites" program is awesome? It gives people a chance to try out quality restaurants for a great bargain. Betty was one of those places I'd always meant to visit, but it just seemed far out of my way (the exotic land of... Upper Queen Anne!) and a bit pricey, the kind of outing you plan for, not just randomly drop in and bust out $100 for a meal, you know?
Of course the 30 for 30 thing isn't quite as thrifty when you take into account that I am compelled to add a bottle of wine plus post-dinner coffee, perhaps a cocktail, etc... but regardless... saving money!
Or at least that's what I have to tell myself. For two people tonight it was $97. Do with that what you will.
Anyway! It's a cute restaurant in a cute neighborhood. We immediately got a window seat in the back corner, a little secluded but cozy and nice. Our server was professional, helpful, and very attentive yet never intrusive. He suggested the perfect bottle of bordeaux blanc, which was a lovely accompaniment to everything we devoured. And I mean everything; I was insanely starving and decided to fully commit to multi-course gluttony. It was a wise choice. We destroyed the little complimentary bread and olive oil plate in about two minutes. I then started out sampling venison pate with sour cherries, which really reminded me of Germany. It wasn't something I'd normally jump at, I'm not crazy about pate, but I just like to branch out. My entree was sweet potato ravioli with shaved parmesan, toasted hazelnuts, crispy sage, and brown butter... okay, do I even have to say how delicious it was? Just read the description. My friend ordered grilled prawns with saffron risotto. It was topped with lavishly truffled watercress, which she bequeathed to me since she doesn't like truffle oil, all the better because I LOVE it! Our dishes were so different from each other, but both amazing.
Then dessert was chocolate souffle cake with coffee ice cream and mango sorbet with a shortbread cookie assortment, accompanied by Caffe Vita coffee. Once again... perfect! We were so full, yet could not stop EATING! Restaurants like Betty make me think I could just eat forever... when I next return it's time for me to hit up the steak frites and sweet potato creme caramel.
Now I'm at home watching an episode of A&E Intervention featuring a morbidly obese guy to remind myself that I cannot, in fact, eat forever. Or I too will be 500 pounds, completely broke, and need my own intervention. It miiiiiight be worth it, though... think about how much sweet potato ravioli I could consume before reaching the point of life-threatening emergency... read more
