2.0 stars, 2.5 is generous.
I really had a hard time with this review. I've been to Beth's 4 times, and there are some good things about it and definitely a lot of room for improvement. It's a Seattle icon, but that shouldn't mean it is above criticism when it is warranted.
The Good:
It's open 24 hours and has booths with room for larger groups, (like six or more). They always serve breakfast food, but also a reasonable assortment of sandwiches, salads and miscellany like chicken strips. They also give you paper and crayons to colour with, and you can find a spot on the wall to tack your work of art up on. The waitstaff so far have always been nice, even when it's busy and they are stretched, and the small 'arcade' is back is a nice diversion.
The food is pretty tasty, although all I've had is breakfast fare, (various omelets). I've never had a chance to test out the 'endless hashbrowns' because no matter how much of an appetite I've accumulated from dancing, I can't finish the bloody omelet, never mind make even a small dent in the hashbrowns!
The Cons:
The place is filthy every time I've been there. Last time the door under the bathroom sink was broken, and exposed the plumbing and grime under there. I've been at Beth's when it's busy and waited 40 minutes for a table and then left after an hour plus long meal and used the facilities when arriving and before leaving, (I have a long drive home), and the bathroom had never been tended to, despite being well used. Toilet paper rolls were on the floor, the ground was splattered in pee from drunk idiots who miss, etc. I know it is supposed to be a bit 'divey', but I mean it is really, really gross, and it has always been this way when I've gone, even if it isn't quite as busy. There is wear and tear, that's expected, but it seems little attention is paid to making the place pleasant; Dennys and IHOP are both 24 hour and they are MUCH cleaner, so that's not the problem.
The food is a little expensive and they will charge extras for things like salsa, which I don't mind as long as I get a decent portion commensurate with the charge, (you don't). Sometimes the omelets/hashbrowns can be a bit greasy. This is especially problematic because the leftover containers are recycled or reused something-or-other, and the fat/juices soak through easily and the container is wet and collapsed when you get home (very unpleasant).
Even though it's convenient and the food is good, I just cannot in good conscience vote this place more than 2.5 stars because of just how dirty it is. I cook A LOT, and I have to wonder if the place is just normally that grimy and everyone is nonplussed about it, does it reflect their attitude about food prep? The areas around the kitchen aren't clean either, and keeping a tidy place to cook in is key to a good experience. As for the bathrooms, get a Swiffer wet/dry mop or something easy and just have someone go in there once in a while and over the floors.
I see reps from Beth's have commented on positive posts here, but never on the negative ones, which is interesting - concern about cleanliness is reasonable, and I doubt I'm the only person who has mentioned it.
If nothing else, Beth's proves that a local dive alternative to the chains exists, and I bet it would shape up if given more obvious competition. Right now, they seem to be resting on their TV creds and the unique position they occupy. read more
