I've gotten delivery once and take out once. The photos are from my delivery experience. I got a chili cheese dog, jalapeño poppers, and chicken tender basket. Oh, and a vodka lemonade - you can get cocktails delivered via DoorDash! Everything was super good, especially the chili cheese dog. They were really generous with the chili (a full cup of it) and it was delicious. The lemonade is made from scratch and I really enjoyed that, as well - not too sweet. When we did takeout, we each got a sandwich, and we also got a Chicago dog, "chum bucket" w/ tots, and a handful of cocktails. I'd had kind of a bad week and was basically like, I don't even care, let's just get whatever we want even if it's an insane amount of stuff, haha. They do single serving craft cocktails for takeout in little cans, which is pretty cool. And they were SO GOOD (all with very clever nautical-themed names). I think our favorite was the "No Ship Sherlock" seasonal Moscow mule. The Chicago dog was amazing - based on this and my previous chili cheese dog, I can say without hesitation that their hotdogs are 100% 10/10. The "chum bucket" tots were also really good, and again came with a very generous full cup of chili. I hate to say it because everything else was so good, but the sandwiches were pretty disappointing for the price, we both thought. I had a tuna sandwich and my bf had a veggie sandwich. They used fresh, quality ingredients, but both sandwiches were kind of bland, and a lot smaller than we were expecting for $14 apiece. That's the only reason I dropped a star, but aside from that, they are 5 star all the way. So, we would not revisit the sandwiches, but hotdogs and cocktails HELL YES YES YES!! Anything involving the chili is also highly recommended. And although I didn't really go into detail about it, chicken tenders were good, too (there were more in there than what the photo shows) - crispy and well-seasoned, and more than what I was expecting. read more

Lunch review: This is the food service attached to the Octopus Bar. We had the tots with nacho cheese and two hot dogs. Wow so good, that homemade cheese sauce was excellent! Spicy but not in a hurt you later sort of way. I had the plain dog on a gf bun with ketchup and the hubs had a Seattle dog. Both were awesome, great grilled flavor. Now onto the Octopus Bar, this place is massive but at 2 on a Monday there were only a few people. The waitstaff were excellent, so nice. I really loved it here and will be back. I used to think this business was ok, I had ordered here dozens of times. I had a question today about something on their menu. I tried to call and ask about it. They place so little value on you as a customer they aren't willing to speak with you. Then they have the audacity to ask for 20%, 25%, or 30% tip. I tried the chicago and the seattle as someone whos never had either, and have eaten hotdogs with almost exclusively ketchup my entire life. the fanciest i got was some chopped white onion. idk why, but i felt like full sending it and getting these two masterpieces. The Seattle was the BOMB. and tbh thats the one i was way more unsure of. like, cream cheese...? on a hot dog???? but damn, it works. the jalapeños add a pleasant and enjoyable heat for someone who doesn't lean towards spicy foods. and the cream cheese cuts the spice and balances it w such a yummy flavor addition. you really wouldn't expect it but its a fire combo. the chicago was impressive, but had a higher heat level, completely doable, but was combined w a loott of sour/vinegary too. the pickles, peppers, and spicy aioli are all heavy hitters in that department and you don't really have anything to balance it out. i think that's just me and my taste tho, if you're someone that enjoys the spicy/sour yumminess, then i think this would be a hit. took a star off bc while the hot dogs overall were amaze, the hoagie rolls were DRYYYY and v bread-y for what i'm used to. it didn't matter as much once i heated it up tho as both hot dogs are real saucy and that fixed the dryness issue lol. the other reason is bc it seems like this place is pretty hit or miss, ie the pretzel being a total bust. read more

I straight up goggled Tuna Melt Near Me and this place popped up in the list. The description of tuna, capers, mayo, celery and onion on Macrina bread with cheddar and tomato = Yum. Right now (during Covid) the place is a walk-up window, but I'd love to sit in the Octopus Bar once it's open. It looked like a theme park. The sandwich was good and that crust will really make you use your teeth when ripping off a bite. The tots were well cooked and the spicy aioli was nice too. I liked the little carry box and the newspaper print tissue paper liner. They also included a lil' treat of a dum dum and under-the-sea gummies. I ordered a Veggie Hot Dog and discovered at home that it's only bread + sausage. I believe they do have other options on their menu that aren't quite as minimalistic. Next time, I'll be more precise with my order, but I wish someone had asked. Apart from that, the sausage surprised me with great texture and great flavor! A delicious sandwich takeout spot that fits a Wallingford need during Covid. Salty Shack offers sandwiches and hotdogs that are a great carryout option. Our personal favorite is the Catamaran. Really pleased with this spot! Saw it while waiting for TNT across the street and had to come back another day to try it out. The menu is easy to read and had a lot of good options for sandwiches. The staff were friendly and our food came out fairly quick. The presentation was really nice with each meal in its own individual carry out box. They even threw in a goodie bag for each of us with some candy and a sticker! I got the Lady Luck sandwich and tater tots and was really happy with my choice. I really wanted to love this, as I was a fan of Octopus Bar. Plus I wanted to support a local restaurant. I got the Lady Luck (but don't) and my fiancé got the Catamaran. I do not recommend either. For a veggie sandwich, this was so sparse, not enough avocado spread or goddess dressing to even moisten the bread, and a $6 sandwich at best. My fiancé had the wrong sandwich made for him and we had to go back. His was ok, but frankly we expected far far more for a $14 sandwich each. The service was great behind the counter, which is why this isn't a 1 or 2 rating. I will try again when Octopus reopens (drinks only, no food). read more

I was always intrigued by The Salty Shack's large wall menu every time I walked down 45th, and I'm so glad I tried it out! Even though the prices are a little on the expensive side for me, the food and drinks were worth it. We got the shark bait and all aboard sandwich. I didn't get to try the shark bait until about 10-15 minutes after I bought it, but even then the sandwich was still warm and the bread was crunchy! Both sandwiches had a lot of flavor, and the portions were great. I've noticed that how takeout food is packaged really affects the food's quality, and I can say that The Salty Shack does it right! Our food and drinks were efficiently packed, and the textures and temperature were still good when we ate them. They also provided a little goodie back with candy and a sticker with each sandwich, so that was a nice surprise! For cocktails, we got knot to shabby and into the abyss. Both were delicious! I especially liked the flavor combination in the knot too shabby. It was a good level of sweetness, I couldn't taste the alcohol, and it didn't taste like anything I've tried before. This is a cute new little take-out window off the sports bar next to the shut-down Guild Theater on 45th St. in Wallingford. There's a large menu covering the wall, and even a covered waiting area in the street. The menu has inventive and tasty spins on old classics, sandwiches, hot dogs, salads, and snacks. Fresh ingredients, with interesting twists. And fun, creative cocktails and other drinks (must be purchased with food for take-out). BUT, if you walk up and order at the window, you will be waiting in that covered waiting area far, far longer than is reasonable. No one else was there, we ordered 1 sandwich and 1 hot dog and HAD TO WAIT OVER 25 MINUTES STANDING OUT IN THE STREET for them. Heck, it even took a long time for someone to come to the window to take our order. So, I encourage you to try this place, but order ahead. Because they were inexplicably and agonizingly slow when we spontaneously stopped there on a walk through the neighborhood. Great food, sloooow service. read more
