This sounds disgusting. Cream cheese hot dog. Most major mainland cities have their own hot-dog specialty and this combo is one of Seattle's late-night comfort foods. These are guaranteed to soak up the liquor in your belly and tide you over for the cab ride home, thus are sold at stands all over the city (nearest in vicinity to clubs and bars). The one we visited happened to be nearest to the liquor establishment we left in Capitol Hill - look for it just a block past the bum holding the sign and yelling "Shit man, WTF?!" These guys are owed a beer for the many nights they've been friendly, helpful and just downright sweet to every drunkard that comes through their cart! I once dropped my hot dog in a state of fuzziness, and they replaced it right away. No charge. I suppose it's easier than hearing a whiny girl sob. And the grilled onions! I've tried to replicate it at home, to no success. The cherry on top are the sriracha, mayo, bbq, special mustard and fixings available. Guilty Pleasure. How good can a 2am Polish hot dog with cream cheese and grilled onions taste? Pretty amazing, and that's not the beer talking either. Although it cost $5, the dog was sizeable and filling. It took a slow paced 1 hour wait and experiencing attitude from the late night hot dog guy (he wasn't too polite too polite to my group and the guy in front of me, is all I'll leave it at), but was well-worth the interesting experience. This hot dog stand literally changed my life... and here's how: So myself and two guys from work ended up at King Cobra one night and were standing outside so the two of them could have a smoke. We had had multiple beers and collectively close to a full bottle of Jameson consumed between the three of us, so we were a bit... "Loose." Some even more drunk bimbo-ish woman comes stumbling by toting a hot dog. The following dialogue took place: Me: "HEY! Is that an AWESOME HOT DOG?!!!" Her::" YOU'RE an AWESOME HOT DOG!!" (i'm aware of the mispelling of "your." but this is an accurate description of the conversation, and in my verbal drunkenness I used the incorrect version of the word. don't question it) I'm not even sure what I meant by that, but the alcohol had completely removed any verbal filter I would normally have (and my sober verbal filter is faulty at best). She proceeded to get drunkenly angry and kick over the sand-filled cigarette/ash tray pot thingy outside of king cobra spilling sand and cigarettes all over the sidewalk. It was then we realized getting one of these hot dogs was a fantastic idea. And where my life got changed is when the man serving the hot dogs asked me: "Would you like cream cheese on that?" I was in such disbelief. As a man who loves cream cheese on most things, I had never thought of this combo. Finally, a delicious replacement to my lamented and loved Bacon Dog of San Francisco. I remember the first time I arrived at The Hot Dog Stand by The Comet - or as I call it, "Haaaawwwt dooogzzzz pla.," because I am usually drunk so my speech is slurred. It was raining and freezing damn cold. February, I think. For some reason my friend and I had been singing that "On a Boat" song and I kept drunkenly referencing MAH FLIPPAY FLOPPAYS as we stumbled toward the delicious aroma of mysterious meat sticks. Yeah, I dunno either. Maybe I was trying to trick myself into thinking that my feet were not soaking wet and numb. Whatever. All of a sudden I am in a line of people, and feeling slightly overwhelmed and worried. Will this hot dog cart live up to my lofty bacon-wrapped standards? Somehow, it did. And it has ever since. Cream cheese is the key. It gets the job done. The miracle-workers here slice the doggies down the middle and insert a lump of cream cheese in it. Then they load the puppy with tons of condiments (sans ketchup for me, thnx) and suddenly I am propelled to greasy heartburn heaven. Somehow, I prefer to visit this random hot dog stand when it is freezing cold. Somehow, in the warmer months, I just don't find myself desiring a hot piece of meat late at night. Maybe there are 3 carts on that corner, but I haven't determined which one it is other than the guy running it is the tall skinny hipster wearing a fedora. Why is The Hot Dog Stand by The Comet no longer in front of The Comet, you may ask? The Comet got its own hot dog stand, it has similar signage, has the same offerings, charges the same prices, and it sucks. You think, it's just a grilled hot dog/polish sausage, with cream cheese and onions, how can one hot dog stand be better or worse? The Comet's cart is much slower, maybe the guy is new and only had the process described to him, the dog isn't split open and grilled to perfection, nor does he grill the bun properly. Stopped at a red light and sitting in the back seat, I saw the umbrella of the hot dog stand and slipped out of the back door thinking hot dog first, reconnect with friends later. And I can load up on all the toppings I want myself, until invariably, my mouth is on FIRE. This little stand is consistently in one place. That might sound insignificant, but it does have wheels and is parked on a hill. Capitol Hill, to be specific - a place where places tend to move around a lot. The important thing to know is that it's a reliable place to get consistently decent junk food when everything else has closed down. When I'm out and feeling a need for vittles to help stave off an impending hangover, I swing by for a $4 hot dog with cream cheese and onions (if you dare) and away I go. Cream Cheese on a hot dog?? hmmm.... sounds a little suspicious. Like something concocted to appease throngs of enebriated masses with a bad case of the munchies or something. Actually, it works out pretty well. The creamyness of the cream cheese and the saltyness of the dog do a synergistic yin yang on the old taste buds and wammy! They grill the bun also to give it a nice toasty crunch. I usually get mine with the sauteed onions but this usually seriously compromises the overall structural integrity of your meaty treat but I don't care. I was out with a bunch of people, and I'd gone outside for a smoke and to cool down for a bit. Sarah B came out and after a moment, she made the announcement that we were going to get Cream Cheese Sausage Dogs. We walked the couple of blocks necessary, and after a short wait (10-15 feet of line takes about 3 minutes, from walk up to dog-in-hand) we hopped across the street to a less busy corner and ate in a huddle. This place is magic. The people that make the dogs there are super nice. A couple of weeks ago it started being a little rainy here for an hour or so, and I got a HUGE hankering for a Comet Dog. Ran down the street, and the Comet Hot dog Stand guy of the moment fired it right up for me even though he was probably freezing and gave me two fresh veggie dogs with cream cheese and ketchup. Yum. When I went it was still at the Comet, so I think they might have several carts or are affiliated with some other carts, or are just super cool and thus don't mind having some competition.
