Remodeled in 2019. I literally drag my butt out of bed at 6 on holidays in order to be one of the first people here, and I'm always shocked by how many people are here. And yet not shocked. I was pleasantly surprised by their cake! The cake was moist and just the right amount of frosting. I've NEVEE had frosting that was as light, airy, with just the right amount of sweetness from any bakery INCLUDING ALPINE in Smithtown. Tried a B & W cookie and a super looking chocolate coated crunchy pretzel shaped pastry. When back couldn't put out that it was clearly very dried/ stale. We ordered my sons 2nd birthday Cake from here.We ordered 7"cake with chocolate cake with cherry filling.They told it will be $55 for Cake.We then decided to changed color of cake to yellow from blue so they added extra $10 for it.After coming home in 20minutes ,we decided to go for original color -blue but for my surprise they increase again to $75 which they originally quoted for $55. Update time! Benkert's Bakery is GREAT for CAKES! I was invited to a dinner party and I'm definitely NOT the type to cook or help cook, so I did what I do best-- bring dessert. Benkert's cakes are DELICIOUS and beautiful, not to mention they have an amazing selection-- cheesecakes, pies, chocolate cakes, yellow cakes, red velvet cakes, you get the idea. I'm extremely unhappy with this bakery. I had a wedding and the cake was included in the package. I went to the store for their "tasting" and spoke with someone on the phone regarding the new design idea for my cake. My original design had changed drastically in between the visit and the phone call. I had emailed my new design twice. She had confirmed the design on the phone. I was charged extra for the flowers. My cake turned out NOTHING like I had wanted. It was like someone read the notes from the two designs and put them together in this horrifically ugly cake. The coloring was off. The flowers were way too big and clumsy and were not the right colors for the piping done on the cake. I very specifically mentioned that I only wanted 2 colors on the cake in the piping. But I got multi-colored miscellaneous flowers that didn't match the shades of color that were on the cake. The picture I sent had ALL WHITE FLOWERS and they were all the same type of flower!! I count a hundred ways they could have designed a better cake. The only saving grace was that the cake actually tasted more delicious than the tasting I had in the store. The tasting in the store had a loose, crumbly cake with processed sloppily put together fillings. The cake we received was firm & moist and had a much better tasting filling. If this cake wasn't included in the package, I would never have used this bakery. And I will never ever ever go back to this place. I have to live with the ugliest wedding cake I have seen in a looooong time in my wedding photos. I don't even like to look at the pictures of us cutting the cake because all I can see is this hideous hideous cake. read more

30+ years ago, I would come to Benkert's with my grandparents & they would get my sister and I each a Cookie Monster or Big Bird cupcake. Delicious. 10 years ago my kid's birthday cakes all came from here. Beautiful, fresh cakes! Today I went in with one of my kids to get a cake for my husband's birthday. Of course we each got a cupcake for a treat. I am so incredibly disappointed the cupcakes were stale, the frosting ... grainy almost. The girl that waited on us couldn't be bothered. She wanted to just get back to whatever it was she was doing (which I understand you have a list of things you have to get done throughout the day but she is still in a service oriented occupation) I think will be sticking to Audrey's in Sayville from now on. I don't like to leave negative reviews at all! I'm not the type cause i support a lot of local buisnesses i went in spoke to a very nice young lady she took my cake order correct . Everything was right ! The decorating was awesome !! However the cake tasted disgusting . My kids even said it was gross . I bought a cookie and creme cheesecake, a few rainbow cookies, a few macarons, and a cupcake. The rainbow cookies and macarons were on point. The cupcake was so dry I didn't even finish it. We have been using Benkert's as our go to bakery for holiday cakes and pastries for over 8 years. For the most part their items were pretty good. Our last two purchases however were so bad I don't think I will be back: We recently purchased a crumb cake that we brought to a party. This crumb cake was horrible! It tasted more like bread than cake...it might have been the worst crumb cake I have ever tasted. Entenmann's would have been a better option. Just this weekend we ordered 10" round cake for my sons birthday party ($55). Inside was vanilla cake with chocolate pudding and outside was buttercream. The cake itself was "OK" nothing great but not bad. The buttercream however was not edible. It had an awkward, almost sandy texture and didn't taste like any buttercream I have ever had before.....super super sugary and just gross. I don't understand why this bakery has such low reviews. I found their items decently priced and their cheesecakes to be very good. I'm not a big baked goods person but when they had their Brooklyn cheesecake out for sampling I took a taste and fell in love. I bought a cake for thanksgiving and people loved it! I also ordered a truffle and a brownie. I found those to be decent but American baked goods is just not my thing. Unless it's lava cake....customer service was not the fastest but at most average. It seemed like students were working the store and they were pleasant to talk to. It's always nice to see a business hiring students. In conclusion, I really liked their cheesecakes and their baked goods were pretty good. I'd recommend this place to a friend and my fellow yelpers! I went in for a cake the day before the event and I wasn't quite sure what I wanted, even after looking at the selection, and the girl who helped me talked me through my options and put together a custom order even though it was such short notice. I have used Benkerts for every cake for my daughters birthdays for the past 6 and 1 year(s). They're great. The cake that was made last year was amazing!! All of my daughters friends and parents were talking about how good it looked and tasted for weeks!! I chose the spongebob cake they had in their cake album, and I modified it to my desire. ((note: I used spongebob figures we already owned for the characters on the cake)). This cake really was incredibly delicious and very cool looking. This bakery has outstanding cakes and pastries. In addition to their great quality, their prices are slightly lower than many of the other well known bakeries on Long Island. Their apple strudel (when available) and their coffee rings are excellent. Their crumb buns have just the right proportion of cake and crumbs. Also try their napoleons. Their bread and rolls are good, but the selection is somewhat limited (e.g., no sourdough bread). You can't go wrong with any cake, including their chocolate or strawberry cream cake. read more

Everyone in the Coram - Centereach - Selden - LakeGrove area must know Benkert's Bakery right? It's been the go- to-bakery for all specialty cake needs for years, for our entire area. And the cakes have always been delicious. So after all these years, what prompted me to write a review for this local institution? Well, I bought a cupcake from there today.... It was delicious. It was Red Velvet. And it was only $1.99. After going to deluxe cupcake places in Boston, NYC, Hoboken, DC and doling out about 4 dollars a cupcake... it was mind blowing to walk into a bakery and eat a delicious Red Velvet cupcake for half the price. I can't ever looks at NYC Crumbs the same way again. Benkert's, you just won yourself a regular cupcake customer. And she couldn't be happier about this. Nice pastries, but the staff here is quite lacking in the customer service dept. when we came, there were a bunch of young girls (probably high school age) working. They continued to chit chat and gab in corner while a small line was forming. Not very professional. Normally that type of stuff doesn't annoy me, but when it is obvious that there are people needing help, you should probably help! Especially at a place where people want to get in and out. In business for a zillion years and only 4 reviews on yelp? I just have to comment. I haven't been here in a long time but used to live in the area. It was a favorite for the neighborhood and surrounding communities. They make cakes to special order and will add just about any decoration or photo to the top. The cakes are absolutely delicious and special. Prices are competitive with other bakeries. My sons are now in their 30s and I bought all their special occasion cakes there, since birth. I currently know of people in my area who travel the 1/2 hour to get one of Benkert's cakes. It still gets rave reviews from friends. I highly recommend this bakery! read more

My 11 year old sister can make a better cheesecake... it tasted like they just made it from a mix. I'm really disappointed. I rarely give bad reviews on yelp. But this cheesecake was pretty bad. Local bakery with a huge selection of beautifully decorated cakes, cookies, pastries, and breads. I want to like this place, I really do. I bought cookies from here in the past and they were pretty standard buttery, chocolate dipped Italian cookies. I stopped by a couple days ago and bought a cannoli cake and a premade cookie tray. The cookie tray was standard. I was a little disappointed that there weren't any rainbow cookies in the tray. The cannoli cake was okay. I wish I had better words to describe it. It looked pretty but the taste just fell a bit short. I liked the fact that it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet but there wasn't much flavor in the cream filling or cake itself. The buttercream frosting was a good consistency, not too rich or sweet, but nothing tasted like a cannoli. I couldn't actually tell what the filling was supposed to be except there was vanilla in it....maybe. I REALLY want to like this place but I can't help wondering if I should have just saved some money and gotten a supermarket cake instead. The service is not as friendly as I would imagine a bakery would be. I wasn't greeted when I walked in. In fact, there was no one behind the counter when I walked in this time. I can't even say if I remember a smile being exchanged after I completed my purchase but maybe I'm just expecting too much? I'm not yet ready to write this place off. This bakery was once pretty good, but its fallen drastically from its once much better ratings. I heard it changed hands and is no longer owned by the Lorch family, but that's unconfirmed. What IS confirmed is that the last two cakes I ordered were pretty bad. Look at my photo here of the 12" round cake I ordered. The chocolate filling did not even come out to the end of the cake, and the yellow cake itself was DRY. The chocolate pudding filling had a bad metallic taste. The left over cake has been sitting in my fridge untouched, which is pretty unusual. My family devours cake, but nobody wanted seconds on this one! For FIFTY dollars, it should be at least edible. read more

This is one bakery I miss, having moved from the area. They cleverly decorate cakes for the season, which are unique, irresistible and tasty. I had them custom make a Kahlua cake for my daughter (out of season), and a custom Godzilla cake for my son. During the holiday season, especially Easter and Christmas, the line goes outside the building and you can barely get parking. The prices are appropriate for what you purchase. I really want to say how impressed I am with this bakery. I planned to get a cake last minute for my engagement party, and I decided I would go here because it was close to my house and because of a friend's recommendation. At first I was nervous because i didn't know how their cakes were and how they were as a bakery. I showed them a picture of how I wanted the cake and they said they might not be able to do one or two parts of the cake which i was okay with since I knew they werent a wedding bakery or specialized in that stuff. I don't know what happened here. My entire family used to get all of our cakes here for every event, but most of them have moved, so it's been a while for us. I recently went back and bought a few items (cakes, pastries, etc.). The cake was okay at best on the inside, but the outer layer of frosting - of both cakes - had a VERY strange, stale taste. Everyone scraped it off and just ate the inside, and we ended up tossing the rest of the second cake. The frosting also had a texture to it that I can only describe as very fine sand.
