We went in to purchase a variety of donuts for our guests this evening. We were very disappointed and embarrassed when we served them. The Cheese Claw shredded as we cut into it, and as you can see from the picture, was basically empty. The Boston Cream had the consistency of bread. All the donuts that were filled only had filling one side of the donut and were dry. They weren't tender or fresh. I'm questioning how long these donuts have been sitting on the shelf. The only thing that was fresh and delicious was the Rye with seeds. Great crust and soft, fresh bread. This used to be a great bakery but over the years the quality and consistency has really gone down. read more

I've been going here for many years on Thanksgiving morning. Each year is a little bit different but always good. The selection they have is large and they have everything; bread, rolls, cookies, cakes and even a small amount of candy. There were many people working, and the service was quick. There was also ample parking and not too many people waiting to be helped. One thing I can say about my experience this year is that the employee who helped me had a problem with numbers. I asked for a dozen rolls . 2 sesame, 2 onion, and the rest plain. She gave me the 4 rolls with toppings and then 6 plain rolls. She caught the mistake before giving me the bag and corrected it . Then I ordered 4 linzer tart cookies and she gave me two. I checked the boxes before I left thankfully and was able to go back in and get the additional two I originally ordered. I was charged correctly so it wasn't too big of a deal, just a slight inconvenience. If you've never been here, I recommend you visit but make sure to check your order before leaving. read more

So as you all know I ordered a lot from this bakery and most of it was made wrong. I wanted to post earlier today BUT I did not want the person who I got the cake for to see this and ruin the surprise. I don't even know if the inside flavors are rite yet. Here it is .. . I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO BENKERTS BAKERY! I ordered a simple happy 60th birthday for the same person I ordered one for 10 years ago for his 50th that they RUINED! They couldn't even get a simple cake correct. They do not care about customer service. There is nothing more upsetting then trusting a big name bakery for your special event and having it wrong more than once. The cake was supposed to say "Happy 60th birthday Mike" it came out Happy birthday Mike. They said they will fix it .. it was not fixed good at all. THEY EVEN READ IT TO ME THERE AND SAID WE WILL FIX IT. I am done. I would say go to queens to get the cake you want to have made, it may be a drive but if you want a cake made the way you ask and the price you pay is worth the trip. Wow. This place place has went downhill from many years ago. It should be a 3.5 star review but that doesn't exist. We went on this store around. 12:30 pm on this Saturday The lady who helped us seemed like she would rather be at a DDS for a root canal than answer any questions we had. The customer service was really bad. Asking what each item was filled with (as they had multiple deserts side by side with different fillings) was just short of a visible eye roll As she was ringing us up we decided we wanted a log of bread. Again asking what type of bread a certain one was was met with annoyance. We pointed at the onion rye. We told her we would take it, she offered to slice it and we said yes please. We spent $26 and they wanted to add on 4% for a card. We paid cash This used to be a 5 star bakery. I highly recommend management look at their employees encounters with customers and keep in mind that some people have traveled 30 minutes or more just to come here based on previous memories. These memories were slightly shattered by the encounter of the employees which would have been a 1- 2 star review for employees, luckily their bakery items were still at solid 4-5 stars. read more

OMG...Ordered a "naked/rustic" tiered cake for my wedding sequel celebration... the cake was beautiful AND delicious! Chris did a great job. I asked for pineapple for the smaller top layer, raspberry in the middle, and chocolate at he base/bigger layer. Guests and family loved it! some took slices home and said the cake got even better days after. Surprised by all the negative reviews though it's my first time here. There is a constant flow of customers in this bakery. We walked in and there were some customers but not overly crowded. Came in looking for dessert to bring to a dinner. The decision came down to fruit tart or strawberry cheesecake. After an employee came to help us with our decision, we decided on strawberry. It helped to know your guests' taste buds. We also picked up a linzer cookie to snack on. Results: The cookie was a bit dry for me. The cheesecake was a hit. Got to love those bakeries. We stopped in here for some treats. The baked goods tasted ok but I could not get over the smell inside the bake shop. There was a strong smell of yeast. I know a bakery. However we frequented a lot of bake shops. The smell did infect some of the pastries we purchased. The staff were friendly. And the place looked to have an abundant amount of treats to try. Not sure if it was a fluke day we will be back to redo this review. Their rainbow crumb cake was real good but it did have a light aroma on it. :( we will stop back to redo the review hoping it was a fluke since they have been around for a long time. read more

I grew up with Benkerts around the block in the 70s,80s, and 90s. It's been hit or miss for me lately. Definitely not as great as it used to be. Today i bought a pound of cookies and some rainbow cookies. Very disappointed as flavors were bland and nothing spectacular. Rainbows were ok but missing almond paste and chocolate on the bottom that make them great. They Seemed odd and I've bought better in Holbrook or Smithtown bakeries. A few weeks ago I was looking for a red velvet cake for my birthday. I had never been to Benkert's so I figured I'd give it a try. I didn't realize I had so many ways to customize my cake! I was thrown off guard but they were super patient haha. All the ladies here are so sweet. And CHECK OUT THIS CAKE!!! I was so excited, jumping up and down like a puppy. The cakes taste like something that was made in a factory, frozen and then thawed out. Gross!

Went in to get a fresh loaf of bread and some treats for the family. What I got was fresh bread and moldy apple turnovers! Yuk. The bread is always fresh and good I thank God I cut into the giant fresh looking apple turnover in half because if not I would have consumed a moldy mess and got very sick as I am allergic to mold. I love Pretzels. not those dried out things that come in a bag at the local supermarket. Not even those super sweet things sold at the airport by someone claiming to be my uncles wife. And while a good NYC hot pretzel is a treat to savor when in the five boroughs, and they are fresh and hot (so not often). There is nothing like an honest to goodness German Brezel. I have been hard pressed to find these in the states. There is a commercial baker who puts a cellophane wrapped package of rods or buns in some supermarkets, but they can match the freshness and unpreserved quality of bakery made. Every trip I have ever made to Germany I was accompanied back home by 2lbs of added brezel weight. So imagine my surprise when I found these wonderful treats at Benkert's. I think I may have scared the girl behind the counter with my Exuberant screech. When she finally cam down off the ceiling I took a half dozen to accompany dinner that night. They did not disappoint. These were very authentic tasting so good they can be eaten without salt (as my doctor reccomends). In truth I had two with salt and one without, but let's not split hairs. So you barflies and pub crwlers can have all the pretzels you want. But when you are ready for some true German tastse, swing by Benkert's and grab a Brezel or two. read more

Walking into a bakery can always make me happy, especially at Benkert's. Boy does it smell good in here! The presentation of the desserts and baked goods is on par here, and makes you want to buy everythingggg! I was looking for a cake today to celebrate a birthday. I decided to go with the Layered Blackout cake- what a great choice. The thing that made this cake stand out was that it wasn't super sweet like I expected. Instead of icing on the outer layer it almost tasted like a pudding. I thought that made the cake taste so delicious, instead of just a sugar overload. Nice bakery out by my cousin's house. I've been going there for better than 30 years, usually when visiting. Yesterday I wanted to stop off before heading back to visit other friends in Westchester, so I picked up a pie and a mocha cake. Both were great and were well-liked by the party crowd. Last June my cousin bought a huge birthday sheet cake from them for her Dad's birthday. He was in a nursing home, and the staff said it was the best cake they'd ever had. Wow! My mom used to drive from Bellport to get their rolls for years. I had family coming over and made the trek to get rolls,since I hadn't been there in a while. This place has gone really downhill. The rolls were stale and didn't tast the same AT ALL! There wasn't even a traditional bakery smell.
