I had my wedding last Sunday 4/6 and had our cake made by Rolling Pin. They sent us a tasting a few months before and we picked vanilla sponge cake with strawberry jam. Absolutely delicious and was even better in the actual wedding cake. The one blemish on a perfect cake was that we ordered lilac or light purple icing for flowers on the cake, they turned out to be a dark blue. But great tasting cake nonetheless. read more

I recently reached out to Rolling Pin to make cookie party favors for my parents surprise 30th anniversary party. I spoke to them through email and it was very organized and clear. I provided then with a photo as a sample and the color of the writing I wanted and they said they were able to get it done. The cookies came out absolutely gorgeous. They were one of the highlights of the party and my Mom was so excited about how well they came out. Additionally, every year for the past 20 years for Mother's day and Father's day I come to this bakery very early in the morning to pick our my parents respective favorite pastries. Me and my siblings serve the pastries to them for breakfast in bed and it makes their day every year. We normally get raspberry squares, black and white cookie, apple turnovers, cinnamon raisin bread (sliced) and lemon meringue pie. All of those pastries are consistently delicious every time we get them which is why we come back. I also recently discovered that they make different types of scones, besides their classic raisin scones. I had the lemon poppy scone for the first time 2 weeks ago and now I find myself constantly trying to find them in the bakery if I have some spare time to stop by and check! The blueberry scone is also quite delicious and only $2.95! I placed a phone order for my son's birthday cake at the Rolling Pin in Setauket, or so. I thought. I went to pick it up a few days later and they were looking all over for my cake. They asked me about when I placed the order? What time I called approximately? when I looked to see when I called I saw that I had instead ordered it from the Rolling Pin in Madison, Wisconsin. . The manager asked me if I had a half an hour and she put together exactly the cake that I ordered. I can't tell you how appreciative, thrilled and happy I was to not be disappointing my sons on their birthday. Everybody in the shop was helpful and kind for my error. If I could give less I would. This bakery was included with my venue and it is ridiculous. Just bc u r "included" doesn't mean u can steal... David's prices r ridiculous for upgrades. I'm pretty sure he outsources his decorating and that's why he charges so much... if someone wants a ribbon, a flower etc u SHOULD BE DOING IT... silk ribbons, fake flowers... clients should not supply it. I asked for a plain white cake in the end and said I would decorate it myself b4 my wedding... it was becoming too stressful honestly.... He said no problem.... it came all nicked up and with blue buttercream dots... We got a few options to chose from and ended up going with a traditional chocolate and vanilla based cake with a vanilla buttercream icing. Cake was nice and fresh and looked exactly how we ordered it. To order the cake we had to do everything online which was a little annoying to be honest but all worked out. I also had to drive about 45 min each way to get out samples. The girls behind the counter were not that friendly but maybe they were just having a bad day. The Rolling Pin used to be our favorite bakery, but after our recent visit, we'll stick with supermarkets for our baked goods. We were there on an early Sunday afternoon, when it was moderately busy. We ordered a seedless rye bread and a cherry tart. One of the several young women behind the counter was reading a lengthy message on her phone to all her fellow employees, bringing all business to a halt. I felt like apologizing for interrupting their fun by trying to buy something from them. Eventually, we got our order and left. The poor service was Strike 1. At home, we tried the cherry tart, which was very good (although a bit pricey, like all of their baked goods). However, when we tried the rye bread, IT WAS NOT RYE! Strike 2. A day later we went to make sandwiches with the not-rye bread, which was already getting quite stale. My wife discovered a blue patch on the bottom of some of the bread slices, which looked like MOLD! Strike 3. They're out! We will not waste any more time or money at the Rolling Pin. read more

So it's my turn to buy the cake for a birthday celebration at the office, and I had a Groupon for The Rolling Pin ($10 for $20 worth of baked goods). What better way to put it to use? I go there before going to work and it's PACKED at 8am on a Thursday morning! That was totally unexpected, but a good sign. I picked up: 1) 8" Cannoli Cake - $14.95 2) 8" Chocolate Mousse Cake - $14.95 They had no problems accepting the Groupon, and my total came out to $9.90 (so basically $19.90 including the price of the Groupon). This was an excellent deal as both cakes were beautiful. I didn't try the Cannoli Cake (I don't like Cannoli- is that weird?) but the Chocolate Mousse Cake was fresh, fluffy, and not overly sweet-- although I wish it had less frosting/cream and more cake. Both cakes were big hits with my coworkers! ----------------------- HOWEVER, this bakery still only stands at A-OK because: 1) They didn't have anything original. I could have gotten similar cakes with similar prices at similar bakeries elsewhere. 2) It seemed like a CHORE for the woman behind the counter to be helping me. You work in an atmosphere where you're surrounded by cake-- be happy damnit! This bakery was my included vendor in the wedding package I did at the View in oakdale. I spoke with David for about 3 months about my cake, did my tasting and all that. Throughout this time he kept telling me "any of the standard 30 cakes on their website were totally included in my package deal. However any cakes with sea shells, flowers, or ribbons - those are extra." So I picked a very simple tiered cake, no extras. Then a month b4 my wedding, when I gave them all my final choices and actually ordered the cake, i suddenly find out fondant icing is $285 extra. Uhhh what?? Lol The upcharge itself wasn't the issue, the problem I had was that after 3 months of conversing, they decided to tell me this at the very end of the ordering. Coincidence? No. As I vented on fb (lol) another bride who used them commented and let me kno the same thing happened to her. It's clear they do this on purpose to be sneaky and get the extra charge in at the last min. There are disclaimers on their website for the flowers, ribbons, etc. but nothing about fondant. They prob figure by that time most brides will feel its very late to start all over and they'll just pay the upcharge. But not this bride! We called David and he wouldn't budge. He was a bit rude and said "well u can always go to another bakery." And that was it! Psht. What a waste of my time and almost my money! Looks like since my complaint they added a fondant disclaimer on their website, but they cud have at least lowered or waived the charge for me for the confusion. read more
