One of the worst experiences we've ever had at Benihana--and we've been loyal customers for years. From start to finish, the service was unbelievably disappointing. We waited over an hour just to receive our appetizers, and then another 45 minutes before the main course even started arriving. That's nearly two hours of waiting while hungry. Knowing how hectic it can get, we politely asked our waitress for bowls of garlic butter upfront so we wouldn't have to interrupt the chef later. She flat-out refused and insisted the chef would provide it. From past visits, we know some chefs get irritated with requests during cooking, which is why we tried to be proactive. When Chef Rob arrived, we told him how hungry we were after waiting so long. He acted indifferent and cooked at a painfully slow pace. Instead of serving the fried rice right away like most chefs do, he cooked it, set it aside to get cold, and then started on the meats and veggies. By the time the fried rice finally reached our plates, it was dry and unappetizing. We asked him for the garlic butter, and he gave a small amount. When my niece politely asked for more, he gave her a nasty look and made a rude comment, saying he had to "drop everything" just to get it. Completely uncalled for. No guest should be treated like an inconvenience. To make matters worse, our waitress disappeared and never came back to refill drinks. I had to get help from a waitress at another table just to find her. After years of coming here and recommending this place to friends and family, I'm sad to say we won't be returning anytime soon. I hate making this post. I loved Paul's since I was a kid. My daughter loved it there. So for lunch I decided to check it out since it was reopened. I was not impressed. My go to order is the club house with tots. So it is a roasted turkey club with a salad. Thats fine not paying $2.50 extra for fries. The salad was not a salad. The ranch was super salty. The turkey was so dry and like it has been cooked a while ago and warmed up. It was half a tomato with the core in it. I understand changes happen but this was not good. I won't even go into the price of it. I am sad I couldn't finish it. I wish they would had kept some of the classic dishes. What made Paul's special I felt that it was food you could rely on and it felt nice. I did find it strange nothing seems to really be updated inside only the food. I made reservations four weeks in advance for Christmas Day. My entire party of eight people was there 15 minutes early. So I checked in for my reservation. They found my reservation. They said now you have to wait two hours because we took too many reservations. I was very disappointed. The staff did not care or did not do anything to accommodate. There was nowhere to sit in the bar and nowhere to sit and wait. They clearly recognized that I had a reservation but they overbooked so I could sit for two hours and wait. After going to hibachi for most special occasions or celebrations for YEARS- this is the first time we could truly say, "we will not be coming here again". We arrived at about 45mins before close & were told there'd be about a 15min wait so we enjoyed some sake at the bar top. We were seated at the expected wait time but waited for almost another 40mins after sitting at the hibachi table to even receive our 1st course of SOUP! The waiter was very kind but pretty much said "Sorry you had a bad time. Unfortunately this is pretty normal around here & it's not my fault". We had an overly salty, almost $150 meal for 2 with no hibachi "entertainment" other than an onion volcano. We made a reservation for Father's Day three weeks prior. They sent us two emails asking us to confirm we will be there on time. We showed up at our reservation time and they were 1.5 hours behind on reservations. We were told the restaurant is full and there is simply no capacity to meet the reservations that were made plus the walk-ins accepted. It made me so upset because I don't eat steak. My other items were ok. What a fun place and atmosphere! We had the server Joe who had some of the best dad jokes and did a good job cooking the food. The meat was all cooked really well and very flavorful. Our server was also great and explained things well. Had reservations and got sat pretty quickly. If you don't have a big party you get sat with other small parties. The group we sat with wasn't a lively bunch but appreciated Joe's attempts and getting them having fun. Both the server and the chef asked for any food allergies. Arrived 20 minutes early for our reservation only to be told that there was a wait. We originally were told 30 minutes, then after 30 minutes we were told 50 minutes. The nostalgia and fun experiences I grew up with at this restaurant just isn't worth it anymore. This is a recurring theme in the reviews as well. This is going to be a honest review. I am relating exactly what happened with no hyperbole. Just the facts. Went to Benihana on Saturday night. Had a reservation for 6:30 which we had made and paid the deposit on 2 weeks in advance. Yes, you have to pay for a reservation. Ok, well that will surely guarantee your time, no? No. We show up exactly on time and are told there will be a 30 minute wait. There is nowhere to wait since the vestibule is packed with others waiting as well. We decide to wait outside in the cold. 30 minutes goes by and come back in and - we are told it will be 30 more minutes. We go outside to wait in the cold. 30 more minutes goes by and we come back in and.... We are told it will be another 30 minutes. We go outside and wait in the cold. Finally come back in and the table is ready. We waited for 1 hour and 30 minutes standing in the cold. No comped drinks, no discount, nothing. Finally get our table and the meal is --- in a word, "fine". Not great, but fine. Same thing they've been doing for years. The same soup, the same sauces, the same schtick. I mean, its fine, but its nothing that you could call innovative. And if you've been there once, there is no reason to come back. The chefs vary in skill with the twirling/banging cutlery thing. But ours was having a bad night or was just less skilled because he failed on most of his tricks and dropped utensils a lot. They all do the same onion choo-choo thing. Then the final kicker. We had a party of 8 and split the check evenly. I asked the server directly: Is gratuity included in this? She said, NO. Fine, so I tip 18% (Not that it was deserved after the waiting fiasco, and lackluster performance, but... whatever, the chef and servers were nice). My brother in law tips 20%. This was done on the keypad buttons thing. We both just pressed the corresponding buttons. The check receipt is weirdly split, confusing to read, Both receipts have both gratuities on it, so its hard to read. We go home. I check the itemized receipts and I notice the totals are wrong. There is an extra number associated with my BILs tip. It turns out somehow an extra $90 got tacked on and discretely slipped into my BIL's check. I have no idea how that would have happened - I want to give people the benefit of the doubt but this is super fishy. He's trying to sort it out, lets see what comes of this. But for now, I can not recommend going here. EDIT: my sister in law went back and they admitted that "This has been happening" Here's your money back. NOT ONE ITOA OF CONTRITION. That's it = this was a scam and they know it. Avoid this place like the plague. Dirty, loud, and designed to scam you out of your money through dim lighting and choppy-chop noise all around you. We drove an hour to get there before 6:30 and found many people in the reception area who had reservations before us and had been waiting for an hour and a half. They told me it would be an hour and twenty minutes because they overbooked. We weren't prepared to wait that long....low blood sugar. So we ended up cancelling our reservation, and unfortunately, we were unable to make other reservations because it was Valentine's Day. I reached out to them to express our dismay, and other than an acknowledgement, have received zero response from management. I found it rude that they sent an email days before the reservation to make sure we would be there, but didn't have the courtesy to text us that they overbooked and not to show up until later. There are the classic showcases of the volcano onion, and the beating heartbeat. Please make reservations because this place gets packed like a sardines can. I ordered the lobster tail, which was tasty, yet nothing special. Furthermore, the 5 course meal all had decent flavors or textures. But nothing gave you that wow factor that makes you think you will come back. The food was okay. In addition, in terms of the benihana special tricks and showcases, I didn't get to see any shrimp tail flips. The volcano onion trick was only 3 stacks high.
