Sarku Japan is located in the food court at Washington Square and can often get busy. When I went one afternoon, there was quite a long line but I thought that it was worth the wait. I ordered the combo 4 with shrimp, teriyaki chicken, and soba noodles and the portion was huge. I think for the portion alone, it's great for the price. Everything was plentiful and the portion of meat was generous. The noodles, teriyaki chicken, and shrimp were all delicious and so flavorful. It's not the best teriyaki chicken ever, but it is very good for sure. Their California roll, veggies and gyoza are also good, all that for $12 (including the chicken and rice). You get those extras if you get the bento box versus just the Teriyaki chicken which is rice, veggies and meat. Noodles or fried rice are extra, forget how much more. They are consistent which is important to me, never better or worse really. You know what to expect. Their portions are very good as well. Bottom line is, this establishment in the mall food court is better than many sit down restaurants. Pictured are the Teriyaki chicken with extra chicken ($2 additional), and the bento box with normal amount of chicken, with the additional goodies mentioned above. Health score could be better. UPDATE: I'm leaving the 4 stars, but know that their noodles are awful, will only get rice from now on. Panda Express makes much better noodles. We are inside Washington Square roaming around and shopping for some souvenirs when we got hungry. Of course we need immediate food to eat and Sarku Japan is waving. Despite the long queue, we still went on as the line move fast. Food: Combo Chicken Teriyaki + paid for additional chicken - straightforward flavor and I'm impressed how rich and tasty it came out. It's on the oily side so a little taste on it is good. Combo Chicken & Shrimp - frickin' good too! I am the happiest. Nothing fancy on this dish but for some reason I love it so much (maybe because I'm so hungry). I have it with the bed of white rice with some side veggies which I appreciate. The shrimp is a bit dry though but doesn't bother me at all. Vegetable Delight - it's on a light slightly bland taste. Still good though. Veggies are half-cooked which I appreciate the most. My Tita paired it with white rice Service is fast and no time for dilly dallying. They always got the long queue coz it's price is really cheap and food was served on a generous portion. Inflation-resistant. It still is one of very few places where you can get lunch for under $5. A very busy teppanyaki place. One of the things I like about Sarku is that the teppan for meat and the teppan for vegetables are clearly separated, with a physical barrier. Only two veg items on the menu, Vegi D'Lite and spring rolls. Both are good and inexpensive. I do wish however that this place offer the "vegetarian zen" sushi (Japanese people call this Sukeroku, a set of maki sushi and inari sushi) -- something this company does at some of its sushi-focused locations but not here. read more

Absolutely the best food in Washington squares food court. Probably been there the longest too and there's always a line. The grills are always up a running so the wait is never that long. You can NEVER go wrong with their signature Chicken Teriyaki plate. It comes with white rice and steamed veggies on the side and you can always (should always) ask them for a little extra teriyaki sauce on top to make it extra yummy. This is the best food I've had at a mall, period. It's like Benihana quality at a fraction of the price and minus the chef putting on a show. The love for this place is obvious when you see a large line during lunch and nobody's hardly at any other food place in the food court. You can upgrade to fried rice for $.50 (a no brainer) and then for only a dollar something, you can double your meat. I can legitimately say that for under $10 I was filled up afterwards which is hard to do to this food incinerator! This is one of my new favorite restaurants hands down. read more

The chicken was already cooked, just sitting on the side of the hot plate ,waiting to he served. ( meaning it was dry and over cooked) The food was just slopped into the container, the dry chicken was dumped on top and the tasteless Taranaki sauce was sort of poured sort or slopped onto the dish and then pushed to me. No condiments were offered, no chop sticks were offered and to be 100% honest if I wasn't starving I would have asked for my money back. You will stand in line and watch DD orders pile up in front of you with no regard for customers waiting. It really is a sight to be hold. Maybe the most tone deaf place of all time. You will wait to order while they do DD and then wait longer to get your food. Absolutely brutal! Waited 25 minutes from start to finish with just 3 people in front of us. It's a joke. I tried the special not expecting much for being at the food court of a mall although the quality was really good and reasonably priced. I tried the daily special Chicken Teriyaki and I got the noodles for .50 more instead of the steamed rice. You also have the option of getting double meat for a dollar more. I was cruising around the food court and saw a sign advertising their bento. I have been wanting one since the night before so I decided to get it. Line was decently long but it was not worth the wait especially if you add on a side dish that most people generally do not order. I got the chicken bento with a side of potstickers. Everything was so bland and adding sriracha sauce did help but I wanted a Japanese flavor, whether I was at a mall or not. I thought it was supposed to be teriyaki chicken but there was no flavor. I did see some people asking for more teriyaki sauce but I thought that would be overkill thinking there would already be some when it was cooked. I was wrong to think that. Then I had to wait an extra 10 minutes or so for the potstickers. I do not mind waiting. What bothered me was that the worker seemed to not want me to stand around the place like a hovering helicopter. He said he would call when it was ready and asked me to sit down and wait. Not even ginger dressing. The dumplings were extremely dry. The chicken was the only tolerable thing, but that's pretty impossible to mess up since it's drenched in soy sauce. First off, let me say that I don't really like Japanese food. Why, you may ask? Because I'm a carnivore and Japanese fare doesn't usually consist of enough meat varieties for me to enjoy. Not to mention the portions are usually suited for women and little children, rather than meat eating dudes hungry after a big squat workout, or 4 hours spent cycling a mountain. Which brings me to Sarku, located on the food court level of the Washington Square Mall. I've always seen Sarku in the food court but never paid any attention to it because it was, well, Japanese food. I always ate at Panda Express in that particular food court, but this one day Panda was too crowded so I ventured around the different eateries and settled on Sarku, and I'm sure glad I did. The prices are fantastic for what you get. The teriyaki chicken is the only thing I get, I get get a double portion for only .99 cents extra. That's a ton of protein to feed these muscles after a hard workout. The thing I really like is that they actually grill up the meat in front of you. The chicken arrives very tender and flavorful thanks to the butter they use to grill. It's accompanied by a bed of vegetables, including cabbage, onions, celery, etc. and comes with your choice of white or fried rice. I always opt for the fried rice. Overall, this is my favorite place to eat in the mall. Fresh food, great price, and you get to see how your food is cooked. I especially like the fact that they use seperate spatulas for the raw and cooked meat. Food poisoning is a big deal to me. read more

I've been eating here for a long time and during my years of seeing them change I've noticed an ugly behavior of their workers. If you where to call them out about them even if it's polite they get really mad and say something rude. We tried to get our eggrolls but they where too burned so we asked for newer ones and we got ones but they where the same. The cashier sarcastically responded something very mean and immature along with his coworker of a cook who tried to say "That's how they are". Please change your behavior, we will never come back.
