It's not the best teriyaki chicken ever, but it is very good for sure. Their California roll, veggies and gyoza are also good, all that for $12 (including the chicken and rice). You get those extras if you get the bento box versus just the Teriyaki chicken which is rice, veggies and meat. Noodles or fried rice are extra, forget how much more. They are consistent which is important to me, never better or worse really. You know what to expect. Their portions are very good as well. Bottom line is, this establishment in the mall food court is better than many sit down restaurants. Pictured are the Teriyaki chicken with extra chicken ($2 additional), and the bento box with normal amount of chicken, with the additional goodies mentioned above. Health score could be better. UPDATE: I'm leaving the 4 stars, but know that their noodles are awful, will only get rice from now on. Panda Express makes much better noodles. Also, compare the sushi from my previous photo to now, there is less stuff inside :(

We are inside Washington Square roaming around and shopping for some souvenirs when we got hungry. Of course we need immediate food to eat and Sarku Japan is waving. Despite the long queue, we still went on as the line move fast. Food: Combo Chicken Teriyaki + paid for additional chicken - straightforward flavor and I'm impressed how rich and tasty it came out. It's on the oily side so a little taste on it is good. Combo Chicken & Shrimp - frickin' good too! I am the happiest. Nothing fancy on this dish but for some reason I love it so much (maybe because I'm so hungry). I have it with the bed of white rice with some side veggies which I appreciate. The shrimp is a bit dry though but doesn't bother me at all. Vegetable Delight - it's on a light slightly bland taste. Still good though. Veggies are half-cooked which I appreciate the most. My Tita paired it with white rice Service is fast and no time for dilly dallying. They always got the long queue coz it's price is really cheap and food was served on a generous portion. And since they are located in a foodcourt, it can be noisy here but manageable. Would love to dine at any Sarku Japan in the future. Mahalo for reading and happy juandering fellow yeeps.

There are a few spots in the mall where you can still get a snack at an okay price. I honestly had not been here for years but a day at the mall caught me needing a quick bite to finish my retail quest. Chicken, grilled veggies and rice hit the spot. Nothing to rave about but better than the average fairs in the direct vicinity.

Made the chicken right in front of me on the grill. For a food court meal, it's the best I think I've had. Veggies cooked perfect, & chicken was delicious. Definitely would have again the next time I'm at the Washington Square Mall

Fast, consistent, delicious. Hands down best mall food. Can't go wrong with the classic chicken teriyaki, the chicken tastes like char and sweet and melted in my mouth perfectly paired with the chewy noodles. I made sure to ask for a scoop of the yummy yummy sauce. Could hardly wait to get home to devour.

We got the noodles and vegetables. The noodles were very bland, and the vegetable mix consisted mainly of cabbage. However, the chicken dumplings were tasty.

Inflation-resistant. It still is one of very few places where you can get lunch for under $5. A very busy teppanyaki place. One of the things I like about Sarku is that the teppan for meat and the teppan for vegetables are clearly separated, with a physical barrier. Only two veg items on the menu, Vegi D'Lite and spring rolls. Both are good and inexpensive. I do wish however that this place offer the "vegetarian zen" sushi (Japanese people call this Sukeroku, a set of maki sushi and inari sushi) -- something this company does at some of its sushi-focused locations but not here.

Absolutely the best food in Washington squares food court. Probably been there the longest too and there's always a line. The grills are always up a running so the wait is never that long. You can NEVER go wrong with their signature Chicken Teriyaki plate. It comes with white rice and steamed veggies on the side and you can always (should always) ask them for a little extra teriyaki sauce on top to make it extra yummy. I never venture too far from this please the chicken alone is enough to keep me full but you can also get noodles or fried rice instead. and their awesome deal of DOUBLE chicken!

I used to love this fast food, taste good and price is reasonable. The past couple of times we were here though, customer service has been bad. The cashier is pouty and so unfriendly, the cooks just scream at you as you get your food. I hope they remember to be nice - there used to be a constant long line, now they are losing customers. Just sad...

This is the best food I've had at a mall, period. It's like Benihana quality at a fraction of the price and minus the chef putting on a show. The love for this place is obvious when you see a large line during lunch and nobody's hardly at any other food place in the food court. You can upgrade to fried rice for $.50 (a no brainer) and then for only a dollar something, you can double your meat. I can legitimately say that for under $10 I was filled up afterwards which is hard to do to this food incinerator! This is one of my new favorite restaurants hands down.

This is what i order, but some of the beef was tough...it needs tenderizing. that would be way better. i also wasn't served enough veg's. it was less than usual. i had to ask for three scoops of sauce twice. the sautee guys need to smile genuinely, show eye contact, ask the customer in front of them how they're doing as they're cooking, so they're not as impersonal. also, a knife & spoon should be included in the utensil packet. i needed to slice the beef & scoop the sauce.

The one thing I didn't like about my last visit, a little bit of micromanagement coming out of the kitchen. In all fairness, a business owner should be critical of what's being plated and served. It's a reflection of the restaurant and the way they approach food. I do not want my food to be micromanaged, I want it to be finessed. This place is clean and traditional, but the bar is also set a little low on that traditional type of experience. This place is a comfortable eatery and not much more. The cultural takeaway is washed over by Ikea lables left on soy sauce bottles, a lack of attention to detail that easily transfers from the table settings to the delivery of food. It's a local spot but not a great date night spot. I was slightly disappointed with the overall presentation and quality. For instance, what a large plate of sashimi or nigiri is brought to the table, there is no explanation and the patron is left to wonder what some pieces might be. I've always nice when the server points out my favorite pieces and maybe something I didn't know about on my plate. The pieces of fish on the nigiri were massive. Let's remember that quantity over quality is not typically what you're looking for in a dining experience.

Once we stepped inside, we were immediately struck by how beautiful the decor was. From the cherry blossom tree with seating built around it, to the wood-and-paper accents, to the elegant wall screen and custom dining tables--everything felt thoughtfully designed. Our dining experience truly felt luxurious, like a little slice of Japan right here at home. Service was excellent as well. Our waitress was friendly, patient with our questions, and quick to bring out our sushi and water. Even the water bottle was a gorgeous textured design--such a nice touch. There's plenty of seating inside, but definitely check the hours before you go. They close at 2:30 pm and reopen at 5 pm, and we've been caught arriving too late before. At sushi restaurants our younger child usually only eats plain rice, and our older one is a picky eater who will eat a little chicken. We initially asked to order the kids teriyaki chicken for our older child but were told the kids menu is only for 7 and under. Since we do have a 5 year old, we ordered the kids meal for her and a side of rice. When the food arrived and we placed the chicken in front of our 10 year old and the rice in front of our 5 year old, there seemed to be some confusion among the staff, which created an awkward and uncomfortable moment for us. In the end our 10 year old only ate a few pieces of chicken and our 5 year old had a little rice, which is exactly why we ordered the smaller portions. It caught us off guard since we did have a child under the age limit at the table and were ordering plenty of food, and families often share plates. A little flexibility or discretion in situations like this might help avoid making families feel uncomfortable. That said, the staff were genuinely very kind and accommodating overall, and very sweet as we were leaving. Overall a beautiful space with very nice staff.
