I've tried many sushi restaurants across Japan and I'll say that if you're looking for authentic Japanese sushi of the same caliber as Japan's, I recommend going here. Every time I come to Portland, I stop by Sushi Kiichi, a family-run Japanese restaurant. For lunch, I recommend a great value lunch set. This time, I came for dinner and ordered 7 pieces of nigiri and 5 pieces of sashimi from the omakase menu. The other dishes I want to eat are all lined up, but the Omakase is guaranteed to satisfy me. This omakase menu includes miso soup. The restaurant's atmosphere is very nice, making it comfortable for families or even just a single person. The female staff member was also very kind, so the meal tasted even better. This place was SO GOOD. Fresh large slices of fish that melted in the mouth. And the agedashi mochi had a chewy mochi inside, light crispy exterior soaked in a delicious dashi fish broth. Dined in this time, not take out! I took my parents with me too so we could try more things together! We got: 1. Agedashi tofu: it was our first time trying and it was good. Piping hot and they were nicely fried chunks of tofu. The sauce as nice too as it wasn't too salty. 2. Bento 1: saba and ginger pork. Both were nice. If you think saba is more fishy then I don't recommend but I like the flavor of saba! The ginger pork was too gingery for me (because I don't like ginger in general) but my parents loved it and it was tender. 3. Bento 2: tonkatsu and ebi fry. Ebi fry is different than tempura shrimp as they use different ingredients to make the batter. Both were fresh, juicy, crispy, and the tonkatsu was nice and thick. After eating it we didn't feel stuffed or bloated from the oil. *the other side dishes were good too like the croquette and the little fried octopus, burdock, salad, etc. 4. Coffee jelly parfait. While this was good, I didn't find it a 'wow' at all. The coffee jelly was nice but then the rest was just simple vanilla and cereal. All of the fish tasted super fresh and of all things (maybe surprisingly) the mackerel really stood out. My family and I just moved to OR. I'm from Los Angeles, although have been living in the southwest for the past few years. I can't remember having sushi this authentic and fresh. Wow! Just wow! I did not expect to find such quality near me. I simply searched "sushi near me" because my friend and I wanted to eat something light and easy, but little did we know that this would become one of my new favorite spots! These menus are HUGE, not just in what's on it, but also in size (perfect for seeing impaired, we joked). I typically like to compare price vs quality/quantity of food, but this place skirts by that by being such good quality that I simply don't care that this is slightly on the spendier side of things. The nigiri we ordered (eel, seared salmon, salmon, yellowtail, bluefin tuna) was fresh and melts like a delicious fishy butter. Most places like to serve eel drenched in some sort of barbecue sauce, but not this place, which let's the tenderness and flavor of the eel stand on its own. The rest were superb. My friend ordered the Alaskan Roll, which consisted of salmon, avocado, real crab, shrimp, flying fish roe, salmon roe. I ordered the Hokkai Roll, which was tuna, salmon, real crab, flying fish roe, salmon roe, scallop, shiso (perilla). This might've been my favorite roll I've had. Rarely do I ever see real crab and scallops on a sushi menu, so I was extremely surprised and extremely pleased. Topped off all of that with some salty, warming, miso soup, and we had an amazing meal that we did not expect to have. We were in the mindset of getting something easy, a conveyor belt restaurant even, but Sushi Ki-ichi turned out to be such a great choice. Prices (as everywhere) have gone up a tad but nothing too painful, although a few items haven't increased in price at all. Quality is outstanding and staff are all friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The Sushi Chef greets everyone who enters the front door with "Irasshaimase!" which means "Welcome, please come in." I keep saying I'm going to try something new but the California ($8) and Rainbow rolls ($16) call my name every time. I also love the slightly sweet Inari ($3): stuffed fried bean curd with vinegary but not-to-sweet rice. Is it weird that I pile fresh, sliced pickled ginger on mine? OK, I'm weird but the fresh ginger is so good. The tempura ($12-$14) is fresh, hot and not greasy, ever. The edamame ($4) makes the best appetizer, along with the perfect miso soup ($3), that is perfect on a cold, rainy Oregon day. They have Bento boxes ($16-$21) and a weekdays-only daily lunch special for under $20. The Karaage ($7.50) Japanese fried chicken, is inspired! As is the calamari ($10). The hearty bento includes a choice of entree (assorted tempura, shrimp cutlet, pork cutlet, chicken cutlet, chicken teriyaki, karaage, ginger pork, or saba shioyaki), miso soup, rice, and a few other dishes. The standout "other dish" for me is a mashed potato that is fried into a patty. It is crisp on the outside and perfectly fluffy on the inside.
