The food was good and I liked the curry but the best part was the vibe and the customer service was exceptional even my friend broke the receipt machine and the cook/waiter fixed it no problem.

Spicy Shrimp Bowl

I ordered takeout and got there a little earlier than the estimated time and it was ready! I got the spicy shrimp ramen bowl. It came separated which is always nice because I've gotten soup before and the tempura is soggy by the time I get it back. The shrimp pieces were big. There was lots of toppings. The cherry tomato's were an interesting addition. The broth was more of a tomato base tasting and the spicy chili oil was separated out too so I was able to adjust my spicy in my soup. This hit the spot for sure.

Great experience. The food comes out quick. Service was great. Like the selection of ramen noodles. Noodles have great chewiness. We ordered extra noodles and still plenty of yummy broth left. The Japanese anime mural is awesome. Good lighting and bar style long table makes you feel like you are in Japan.

Gyoza

How this place doesn't have a line of 20-30 people at noon, baffles me. Menu is very straightforward and easy to navigate, the service was fast, incredibly fast, especially for 2 people working. This was definitely a no b***s***, order - eat and enjoy - pay - have a nice day, in the best most no-nonsense way that I would expect from a noodle shop. Great art on the walls, nice bar with plenty of water cups. Noodles were fantastic and the slurp was so slick and fast, the ramen broth and tare have a depth of flavor that makes comfort food feel like an understatement (which is why umami was probably made/said). The shoyu egg was so divine I almost fell backward out of the stool, add that to everything you can. The bamboo shoots/menma had a very distinct and exciting taste, that my wife and I couldn't put our finger on. Chashu pork was incredibly tender and had a sear and char flavor that will make you savor it with each bite. My wife had a chicken ramen, and by far - the best I have tasted and the chicken had so much flavor and was just as tender (which was crazy to experience because it was some white meat chicken). Had also the fried gyoza (fantastic) and potato and corn croquette was really flavorful and had some side cabbage with dressing that was sweet, and had a great seasoning within. Also, they have coke products, just the right touch, but they also have ramune and other specific drinks. Go on your lunch break, go when you can, have it ordered and delivered, whatever you do - don't let it scare you with narrow seating or a direct server/cook asking a question. They love what they do, and they just want your gratitude for their food, thank yous, and money so they can keep doing it. Man, what an amazing lunch, and I didn't feel heavy after fried food and ramen, how?

Mugen is very much a noodle bar spot that is reminiscent of more traditional ramen shops found in Japan or China. The chef guided us through the fairly simple menu and I liked that there weren't too many frills. I just got the basic broth he recommended and I believe it came with all the toppings. Highly recommend getting the additional chili oil. It comes in a separate little condiment bowl so you can adjust for spice level but I think the broth would have been a bit too bland without it. Best part about this ramen was the noodles! Not sure if they are handmade but they were the perfect consistency. Great price, good spot, would eat again.

Chicken Katsu kare
AJ P.

The food at Mugen was wonderful! Fast service and delicious. The chicken Katsu Kare (curry) was the best I've had in the Portland area. The noodles in the ramen could have been a little more firm, but it didn't occur to me in the moment to ask for firm/hard noodles, so that's my bad. The flavor of the broth was delicious as was the pork! We'll be back!

Potato and Corn Croquettes

This is a must when anywhere in a 1 hour radius. One of the best ramen shops period. The owner is knowledgeable and devoted to the craft. Small hole in the wall type beats mixed with absolutely excellent food. The croquettes pair with their signature Tori Paitan Ramen. Every time I visit Oregon this is on my list of spots to hit and I'll never stop recommending it.

Wanted to like this place but thought it was very mediocre curry. Nothing stood out, negative or positive. It was just... fine.

Ask the Community - Mugen Noodle Bar

Are there any gluten free options?

I do not believe so. They do not have different noodle options and I believe their regular noodles are not gluten free.

Is there a competition for most expensive ramen? $20 a bowl is insane. Doubtful this will live up to price point.

I agree with Michael. And although it isn’t a cheap meal it is so worth it.

Looks like a great place, do they make their own Ramen broth or is it instant?

Not only do they make their own broth but it's delicious. I was talking with the chef who may be the owner and he was telling me what a long process it is to make it.

It was quiet, and we were seated quickly. I ordered the rice patty burger. I thought the taste was okay, it was a tad bit under seasoned but the sauce kinda made up for the flavor. The concept of a rice burger is interesting but it does get really messy because it breaks apart easily. The fries were delicious, though! The popcorn chicken was breaded nicely and had a great crunch and flavor. My partner loved the fried oysters. The squid was alright, it was a bit too chewy to bite into to tear. The drink was delicious! I believe I got the strawberry yakult. Overall it was a great place to try out a few of the appetizers!

SUPER VALUE, I highly recommend ordering this. The omurice was super wet, very rich/flavorful. But not too overpowering, great balance between saltiness, sweetness from the glaze and richness. Katsu was super crunchy not too dry, just overall great. Matcha dessert was my favorite, you can really taste the high quality Matcha Powder they used. Just a great balance of sweetness, not too sweet. I recommend trying Kyuramen for their Omurice combo! Restaurant had stunning interior with the hexagons aesthetics. Overwhelming friendly and attentive staff.

The lady who took our order was attentive and quick. The kitchen people carefully brought the food, and attitude was polite. I wasn't sure whether hot tea would be an extra cost and got ice water. Portion was normal, tons of vegetables and FOUR slices of chashu meat, which I was already amazed. Soup was thick but not salty at all. Aji tama was perfect. The price is reasonable ($12 per bowl, no matter what favors of soup bases). The front line people always made sure to keep the bar table clean. It really reminds me of family own ramen shops in Japan. Thanks for the delicious food. We want to come back again for different spicy levels of ramen, as well as the appetizers.
