UPDATE: The manager called me and made the situation right and is also giving feedback to the chef. Hopefully this was as one off incident! Last nights experience was not worth $150 plus dollars! I've gone to Benihana's for mine and my daughter's birthdays every year until this year and we're no longer going. First we were seated awkwardly at the corner of a super crowded table. I got up and asked to move to another table that had 5 extra seats. The chef arrives and the guy is obviously new so no fault to him but it affected the whole experience. He was good at first but then was a mess making the chicken fried rice because he shaped it into a heart and then did a heart attack and food flew everywhere. There was one small chicken breast, so now that you've made it where we have to pay $7 extra for that, I'd expect more chicken. It wasn't seasoned well and wished I had more soy sauce. He then did a trick where he was flipping the bowl with fried rice to hand to my daughter and it all dumped out right in front of her. Ok, we forgave that. Then he cooks the shrimp, then he starts on the chicken breast. He cooked the chicken where he cooked the shrimp and I stopped him because I don't eat shrimp and hate the taste, so I asked him to cook my chicken on another place on the grill. He did. But then he ended up putting chicken on my plate that was cooked where the shrimp was and gave someone else the chicken breast that he moved away from the spot. He overcooked the zucchini, which is our favorite but we couldn't eat it because it was mushy. He cooked onions and no mushrooms, which we love the mushrooms too and saw other tables had that. The chef experience was just horrible. On top of everything, the sake colada I ordered was not drinkable. The ice was chunky and diluted all other flavors in it. I had to send it back. The waitress was amazing so no complaints about her. But yesterday evening was the last evening we're going to Benihana's. I tipped well and felt bad to even bring any of this up to not embarrass the chef but I am really not happy. Sad because we loved that place. read more

Honestly never do reviews but I had to do this one! From the moment you walk into this restaurant, you are not greeted respectfully, you're greeted like another number and dismissed. I honestly think the hostess are overloaded because of their reservation system and they're put into a bad situation. I do have to say the first person you meet when you walk into an establishment is a face of that brand or industry and when I walked in this evening the face was not comforting. Not welcome. We had reservations at 7:30 p.m. spoke to the hostess at 8:30pm and was given several different stories about why we have not been seated yet. I requested the manager to inquire about the length of our wait, he could not tell me ANY timeframe. (He explained my wait like a Disneyland line for a ride) The manager could not give me an answer and just deflected the problem onto his customers as well as staff. Stating that customers were opening gifts and might take a while for us to be seated. The problem is not with with the staff necessarily it is with their online reservation system. They schedule a reservation every hour which is not a realistic timeline that benihana's restaurant can follow. Anyone who has gone to benihana's knows that it takes more than an hour to get through dinner, Not counting the wait. We we're told that we were going to be seated four different times in 20 minutes AFTER 1 hour. We ended up waiting over 2 hours for a table!!!! This was totally unacceptable for a chain restaurant who has a website for reservations! After we were sat we waited another hour for our chef to come and he never did. We got up and left the restaurant. It was a horrible experience! But nonetheless, we made the best of it and said this was the funniest holiday experience we've ever had. I have lived in several major cities and visited benihana's restaurant prior to this occasion due to being military. Unfortunately this location has a reservation system set up for 1 hour. We all know it takes more than 1 hour to get through a dinner at benihana's. This restaurant and many other benihana or any restaurant. A majority of restaurants need to fix their reservation system to at least an hour and a half at the very least. Benihana's is clearly taking the lead on a horrible reservation system! @benihana's your national review rating is lowering to almost 3%. You will be out of business within 5 years or 10 if you don't fix your problem. There are plenty of other local restaurants who do hibachi that have new tricks, all of yours are outdated. I can slam a spatula on my stove for less than $60 a plate. For almost $60 a plate, I suggest you come up with some new tricks because your management is garbage, your bartenders are snobby, and your food is mediocre. @lee c don't message me with a generic website to your corporate like you do everyone else. Benihana was one of the worse restaurants I've ever been to. I came here for the first time and decided to sit in the lounge/sushi bar area and thought it was going to be a nice experience and it was absolutely awful. We did the $39 meal plus add a extra $9 for Filet mignon. And our order was supposed to with three course meals and we were waiting for an hour for our food and it was all cold. Cold steak, cold vegetables, the rice was the only thing warm. Also the place we sat was where you pick up your to go orders. And they were so backed up, they had 3 different drivers trying to pick up the same order and it wasnt even ready yet. Also the workers were slamming dishes and cussing in front us. Finally stopped and tried Benihana- restaurant is very dark inside and loud, but I guess that is part of the table side performance. Clearly stated several times we didn't understand the process/menu and once I asked directly how to order got a very short answer. Lunch for two (5course) option with 1 water and 1 ice tea came to $117 with tip. Chef at the table was struggling food ended up pretty much everywhere. Had to stop and scrape egg shell out of the eggs he was cooking for the fried rice two different times. Soup was very strong, salad was tiny and had way too much dressing on it. Fried rice was ok, and the rest was edible. In the end for my half of the bill I got a chicken breast, 1 slice of zucchini, 1/4 cup of onion and a tsp of mushrooms. Was very disappointed. We have been going to this location for many years as always had great service and wonderful food. This time, however, the service was not up to it's usual standards. Dinner was more than 3 hours long. It was almost an hour between our salads and when the chef came to cook. We waited a long time for our check - may be why people are waiting for seats. We left hungry and sad as we had been looking forward to this experience. Big problem with Benihana: they GROSSLY overbook reservations. I arrived at 5:25 for my 5:30 reservation. When I make reservations I expect to be seated at or no later than 10-15 minutes after my reserved time. We got seated at 6:20...nearly an HOUR after our reserved time. That much of a delay isn't an accident. I strongly suspect Benihana uses software that purposefully overbooks to ensure maximum profit at the expense of customer's time. This is a massively disrespectful practice within the industry that cooks, servers, and hostesses dislike because it results in understandably angry customers. Sure enough, although I disliked doing so I only tipped 10% instead of 20% because until it literally starts costing employees enough to speak up about and/or quit, this will keep happening. The tipped staff lost about $25 from me last night because of the disrespect of my time that management showed. In addition, I now have no intention of ever going back and will also encourage others to avoid Benihana if they value their time. Aside from that, while the food was good (as it always is), honestly...the value just isn't there. $200+ for two people with a couple drinks each isn't a good deal. There are PLENTY of other places in town, including some high-end steak houses, where you can get as good or better food for less money. Sometimes a lot less money. Final quibble: everyone's drinks at our table sat empty for too long. Not only did I notice this, I heard the guy sitting two seats down from me state to his wife, "Is the server ever coming back for drink refills??" Had a manager come back to tell us they had no rice and it was a 15-20 minute wait?! Our food was 1/2 gone by the time he told us this. Our server came over and informed us we would be waiting longer due to all the cooks being at tables already. Mickey the manager came over after and tried to tell us "that is how it is and the cooks have to cut and prepare their own items before they come out." Keep in mind it's 9:15pm and our reservation was at 7:45 for 4 of us and the other 2 at 8:30pm. Instead of the manager offering to make things right he made excuses, yet we all have eaten here many times and never had a wait this long before, yet Mickey again said "this is a normal wait time...". We went over to tell the front check-in folks that it's been too long, and they sat there and acted like they'd do something... and we watched as they did nothing and told no one (and if they did, nothing happened)... so wife went over to someone who looked like a manager and told him... and he said he'd "check on what's going on". Funny.... soon someone came out... and the show and food was good. Of course, the people who had ordered something not hibachi had already eaten and were just sitting there being bored, and we had to go chase people down to get their desserts ordered early (they enjoyed the show). Through all this... NO ONE... not our server, not a single manager, no one... came by to check on us (but they did check on the group right next to us to see if everything was ok). NO ONE came over to apologize to either of the families at this cook top for being ignored and abandoned. It's not like they were all busy either... throughout all this, I observed them... the older folks who might have been managers... the older ladies who usually sing the birthday songs, etc... all just meandering around talking to each other about something obviously WAY more important than their customers. Were they short of chefs? The one that cooked for us didn't cook while we were waiting... so can't tell. Are they short staffed? Not from what I saw with people standing around doing who knows what. Was the place so packed it was just hopping? NO... multiple empty cook tops. Thankfully, the chef was good and he did a fine job with the food. But everyone else? You don't belong in hospitality or restaurant service if that's how you do it. Kids will want to go back because they love their fried rice. (again, no dings on the chefs). The entertainment was fun, but as I previously explained we had an experience that was frustrating. We had a party of 7 for dinner that was delayed significantly. I believe that customer service is an important part of a dining experience. The employees at Benihana were exceptional. The manager, however, has not. I tried multiple times to reach him and had no reply other than for me to contact the corporate office, which I had already done. There has been no response from corporate either as of this date. There are many restaurants in the Portland area that provide excellent food AND customer service. We will spend our money at those businesses instead of Benihanas. Unfortunately, our service from the servers and hosts was really disappointing. We waited almost the entire meal before we were offered drink refills, and it felt like the staff outside of the kitchen wasn't attentive at all, a little rude if I'm being honest. At a place where the servers are the ones receiving tips and tipping out the chefs, there should be a much higher standard for service. This is one of my favorite go to places. I always order the same entree' (Filet Mignon). During the week this entree' is $26.50. We made the mistake of going on a Saturday. The EXACT SAME menu item is $51.00 on Saturday. Across the board this restaurant is almost doubling the prices on the menu. Their prices posted online do not reflect these OVER inflated prices. Also, every one else's meal came with ice cream, but for some reason the $51 Filet Mignon did not. It sounded refreshing, but also be prepared to spend $6.50 for one scoop of ice cream. I called the restaurant to inquire about this. The resolution manager said agreed the price on the menu is NOT reflected online. She kept explaining away the reason they serve and charge DINNER menu prices on the weekends, even if you go for lunch. When I made the comment this is NOT right when you go in thinking you will pay one price, and basically get STICKER SHOCK when you see the menu.
