Doctor seemed competent, but in a rush to turn and burn to the next client and their business practice a bit shady. Before I even saw the doctor, they wanted me to sign some form that was going to require me to pay them a lot extra for the exam not mentioned or quoted over the phone. I declined that on the spot. Then after being escorted into the exam room, probably a 20 minute wait before the actual doctor came it. She was attentive but rushed and I could tell she wanted to get to the next patient as quick as possible. Then she had the nerve to say she spent a lot of time with me in the one hour time slot I was in there except she was 20 minutes late into that part of the hour. Before leaving I checked my prescription and I noticed they made a mistake entering my old script instead of the one I just got. Not cool and not thorough. Now to the business part. That little game they play with a waiver to pay for an extra $80 something dollars tagged onto the exam is one thing but it gets worse. A year later I get an email reminder for and exam. But unlike any other "reminder" from any other eye doctor I have been too, they not only scheduled me for an appointment date which I never asked for, they had statement in writing saying failure to appear would be $39.00 cancellation/no-show fee. Had I not seen the email, they would have charged my credit card on file without even noticing. That's shady AF is you ask me. read more

We just got out of Kaiser insurance and in the process of finding new providers for everything. Yesterday morning something got stuck in my eye, and despite my best efforts to try to dislodge the offending irritant, nothing worked. 24 hours later, it was getting worse and I called Bender Eye in a panic, they let me come in within the hour and Dr. Bender spend a long time trying to find out what was wrong. He was so kind, patient, and thorough. He was careful, meticulous, and most importantly did not give up after looking at my eyeball and couldn't find anything. In the end it was a piece of something stuck really tight to the upper top under my eyelid. I feel like other providers might have send me on my way to the ER. Cannot make an appointment because can't reach anyone on phone. You can only leave a voicemail where it says someone will callback. Phone systems don't work that way. Someone needs to call the phone system vendor and have that system reprogrammed so call rings at the front desk so a live person can answer if available. Not just send calls to a voicemail box. All calls to office should be answered live if possible. It's bad customer service and you are losing business if customers cannot talk to person live or reach your office to make an appointment. read more

Called Bender Eye on a Friday afternoon, in a little bit of a panic, because my husband had a piece of sheet metal stuck in his eye. Having never been there before , and it being a Friday afternoon, my odds were against us, but they pulled through and went above and beyond for us. Receptionist called me back and said that she spoke with Dr. Bender and he was going to move a few people around to make time to see us. They did let us know that there might be a wait, but that was the least of our worries. They were so helpful and accommodating. While he waited, Dr. Bender came out to personally administer some numbing eye drops so that my husband wouldn't have to wait in pain. Within the hour he had the metal out of my husbands eye and sent him on his way with a follow up appt for Tuesday and some antibiotics. Seriously 100/10. Great doctors, poor business practices. Got bait and switched for my annual eye exam. When they called to confirm my appointment, they also confirmed that I would only be paying my insurance co-pay. When I left to pay, they charged me $50 for a lens fitting that I didn't ask for, nor told about when I signed in. Very stupid move, I probably would have approved the extra charge if they'd told me beforehand. Hope the extra $50 was worth my lost future business and the $500 I still need to spend on contacts/sunglasses. read more

I walked in with a special light that attaches to our glasses worn by one of our orthodontic team members. It lost a special screw and we needed to repair this somehow, and quickly. Dr. Bender and team to the rescue! I was greeted by a very friendly member of their team. Temp check, very clean and safe environment too. They could not have been kinder, and this wasn't a scheduled appointment in their day, and they didn't know me. They happily fixed the light attachment for my glasses, and I was on my way. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Bender and his whole staff. I have difficult eyes with multiple problems and he has been able to prescribe glasses for me. I've had issues with getting my nose pads to stay on and they've changed them out numerous times and each time, they were so generous enough to fix them for me, and fast too! If I could give Bender Optometric Group negative stars, I would. Back in April of 2010, I purchased two frames overseas and brought them in to have them fitted with lenses. They said it would take about 1 1/2 weeks to complete, which is normal. On the date I was supposed to have them done, I called to see if I could pick them up and they said that they were still sitting in the office and hadn't been sent to the lab yet. Instead of waiting for this office to complete my order, I decided to take them to a different optometry office where I had them done within the time frame promised. Fast forward to June of 2011, I received a bill from an optometry office for $486 dollars that was 120+ Days overdue. I was puzzled as to what it was, so I called the office and they told me it was for the lenses. I thought I was talking to the optometry office that actually fitted my frames with lenses because I had completely forgotten about Bender Optometric. Thinking that it was the 2nd office, I told them it was already paid for and that they needed to check their records. They called me back a few weeks later threatening to send me to collections if I didn't pay over the phone immediately. I didn't pay because I distinctly remembering to pay for them already. That night, I looked over my records and realized that it was the 1st optometry office (Bender Optometric Group) that was trying to bill me for my canceled frame order. The next day, I went into the office (steaming mad) and told them about their mistake. The front office receptionist coped major attitude with me because I told them it was absurd that they would send me to collections for services they didn't even provide and that it was their mistake. I told her that it was also very strange because it had been over a year since I came in and this was the first time I ever received a statement from them. She told me it was impossible and that there was no way I never received any other statements. So not only was I a deadbeat, I was now a liar too. We argued back and forth, and the receptionist threatened to call the police on me because I refused to leave until they fixed the problem! Another girl in the office ended up stepping in and the angry receptionist went to the back office. The office manager took less than 5 minutes on the phone with the lab to confirm that the order was not processed. She apologized and told me that they would remove the charges. It was a ridiculous situation that got out of control. Could I have been a little more calm and collect in handling the situation? Yes. The way I look at it, the entire situation would have never happened if: a) record keeping in the office was done properly b) office person in charge of billing did their due diligence and researched the charges before sending out the statement. With so many different optometry offices in Tustin, no one needs to waste their time with this one. read more

The eye exam was fine with friendly helpful staff BUT...the rest were very disappointing. My health insurance included flexible spending account and when I called them to provide them with my flexible spending account information so to avoid dealing with claims form. They claimed they called my insurance company and was told I don't have a flexible spending account. To avoid the hassle, I decided to just pay with my credit card. 3-4 weeks went by and I have not heard from the office regarding my glasses and ironically, I have received my reimbursement check from my flexible spending account!! So I gave them a call to find out where my prescription glasses are and they said the lab was closed. Today, I received a voicemail from the office giving some excuses that it will be another week or two as the lab "messed up". I shouldn't be the one chasing after my glasses and they should have a system checking on their customer order to make sure it's properly fulfilled!!! I highly recommend Bender Eye, for several reasons. Dr. Bender and his staff are awesome! To start with, they were very accommodating to my hearing disability. And, more importantly, my prescription is perfect! I started wearing glasses a few years ago. The prescriptions I had been getting worked fine, but I had a lot of difficulty adapting each time I received a new Rx. Dr. Bender did a very thorough exam and told me about a condition I had, that I didn't know about before. When I put on my new glasses for the first time, I was amazed at how well I could see - it was immediate! I can see better with these glasses than I have in years! Dr. Benders office was referred to me through Dr. Nakhlas office and I am thrilled to have found them! I have worn contacts for over 20 years now and have suffered from dry eyes. Dr. Bender was THE FIRST doctor ever to not only educate me on my condition. Not only did he explain my discomfort (in lamens terms) but put plugs in my tear ducts (who knew this could be done), start me on HydroEye omega-3, and Restasis to help the condition. I'm happy to say that my eyes feel so much better, and I have him to thank! He was really the only doctor that I felt cared enough to take the time not just to sell me contacts but to be a doctor and help my condition. Awesome place I love coming here. The staff is extremely professional and courteous. Aside from that Dr. Bender is great, very friendly, knowledgable and patient. He never rushes trough anything and I love that he will sit with you an answer any questions instead of sending in an assistant to do all the work for him (like other places that I have been to in the past). They have a great selection of frames (I do wish they carried more brands) but I know that it's hard because from what I've been told is that they are required to commit to a huge amount of the product. The equipment that he uses is awesome, all computerized, and none of the old manual stuff (which is good because anyone willing to spend the money to stay on to top edge obviously cares about their business).
