I specifically spoke to the receptionist indicating that my wife has one more hour until she has another appointment. The receptionist said that we would be done. He took my mother off of her glaucoma eye drops and now she has permanent damage to her optic nerve! I was a little bit afraid to come here reading some of the other comments, but I found Dr. Sacks to be thorough, knowledgeable, and nice. He's "old-school" and no-nonsense, so if you're looking for the latest technology or electronic records or a doctor who is touchy-feely, then it's not the office for you. (The person at the front desk cracked up when I told her about my trepidation for getting a referral here; she just said not everyone appreciates how straight-forward he is. Note: I didn't have problems with the exam, so I did not get scolded about being difficult or anything else. That does make a difference for this review). They are high volume, but that just makes it easier to get an appointment and in and out quickly. He didn't test me for eyeglasses. Said he couldn't with all the stuff in my eye. Instead, he suggested I go see an optometrist. The person at the front desk told that's his least favorite thing to do and that he frequently suggests people be seen elsewhere for that. P.S. He gave me a great tip on how to avoid ever having glasses, if I can stand it. He recommended getting a 1.0+ pair of glasses at the drug store, popping out the lens on the side of my dominant eye, and wearing them around the house. If I can stand it, he said, I could then get a mono contact lens made, leaving me with one eye adjusted for close vision and the other far. read more

I am a new patient. I called this morning at 8:30 am with a problem I was having with "floaters" and the receptionist told me to come right in. This is the meanest eye doctor I've ever been to. I was getting a contact lens exam, so he had to put various things up against my eye, but I'm used to it by now (I've been wearing contacts for 10 years) so it's usually not that hard to get through the exam. Dr. Sacks put one of the machines against my eye, and I blinked once, so he had to reposition it, and he said "This is usually easy for contact wearers, I don't know why it's so hard for YOU." And I said that the machine was not the contact lens and that it was different. So he put it up against my eye a second time and I blinked, then he sighed loudly and said in a condescending tone, "You're being DIFFICULT." So he pushed back his chair and explained that he was JUST TRYING to measure something so he could determine if I was too nearsighted for laser surgery or not, but that I was NOT COOPERATING and that he couldn't do it. After 2 attempts that took no longer than 10 seconds, he decided that I was too difficult. I had never had an eye doctor behave this way toward me, so I was shaken up and my eyes were tearing up a tiny bit, which made him sigh in disgust even more. So he finally finished and told me to see "the lady" (referring to the front office clerk) on my way out. I could tell that he and his staff got along very poorly, he was also very condescending to them as well as to me. If you don't want to be scolded and demeaned, please choose another eye doctor. I ended up having to make several more follow up visitsI can't comment so much on other people's experiences with him but I can tell you that my experience was that he genuinely cared about my health also I'm self-employed and have no medical insurance and upon finding this out he gave me a discounted rate on every visit and medications he could and all without me asking .he may not be happy Gilmore when it comes to personality but that's not what I'm looking for in a doctor I want the most knowledgeable and skilled I can find that actually cares about my health and he's that doctor. My wife is an ICU nurse and told me that for many of the doctors at her hospital use him for their personal health and that's all the reviews I need. Being blind in (1) eye since 5 years old from an accident it was a great relief to finally have a doctor that gave me the straight information with out the BS or trying to have me do other things just to line his pockets. About 9 years ago I developed a stye in my left eyelid, most likely since my eyelashes are so long that they catch all the germs flying around the air. Kidding. At the time my medical provider was Kaiser and as anyone who has dealt with them knows, they take forever to do anything and when you need medical attention yesterday, 3 weeks from today just doesn't cut it. So I looked around and somehow ended up with Dr. Sacks. A little backdrop, my eyelid was so swollen and each time I blinked it felt like sandpaper rubbing my eye so as you can imagine I was not going to deal with that for 3 weeks. Back to the point, Dr. Sacks looked at my eyelid, performed an outpatiend procedure and I was done within the hour. He was professional, efficient, and quite friendly although his dry humor may come off as rude to others. Anyhow, I needed his services again. So I made an appointment this Monday for Tuesday morning (yesterday). I didn't catch the receptionist's name but she squeezed me in and when I came in the office was very busy and filled with patients. I was in a rush and asked if I could come back Wednesday (today) and she said, "Sure, I'll squeeze you in." So I went back this morning and I was seen and treated by Dr. Sacks and out of there within 45 minutes. Again, he was professional, efficient, and he even cracked a couple jokes since I had left the day before; he said they had sent a search party looking for me. Ha ha. Although I have medical insurance, I didn't want to waste time visiting my primary doctor in order to have a referral so I paid out-of-pocket (for now anyway). Did I mention that he is affordable? I only went to him because my insurance changed & the previous doctor was no longer approved. The first time I went I was a little leery, the waiting room was FULL of old people & I had a bit of a wait. I have to laugh because I am one of those old people. At another visit I was seen quickly. Dr Sacks has a dry humor like my own. And he's straight forward. When I had my cataract surgeries with the prior doctor I was convinced to get the multifocal lenses at $3000 per eye. I have been going to Dr. Sacks for many years. He has always been nice to me on every visit. In addition to that, I had a cyst on my eyelid that my skin doctor told me was nothing. I asked Dr. Sacks about it and he tried to aspirate it and since he couldn't he took a biopsy. It turned out to be cancer. No one else took the time to find out what it was. Saturday began like any other day, except that I had to thoroughly clean the carpets before moving out if I wanted to see my deposit back. I stupidly rubbed my eye and presumably got some of the carpets shampoo into my eye. It immediately became swollen and hurt a lot. Washing it helped some but not entirely. I hoped it will go away on its own, but on Sunday it looked even worse. I even considered ER or urgent care but decided to wait till Monday to see a physician. On Sunday night my eyes got so teary that I woke up at 3 am with my chest soaking wet from tears! I immediately went online in search for a physician. I never saw an ophthalmologist before, and this one just happened to be the closest to my location according to google. The website said they start answering the phone at 7:30 so I spent the rest of the morning reading about chemical burns and contemplating the worst scenarios. With great disbelief (who starts answering phones on time?!) I called their office at 7:32. To my surprise, I was answered after three tones (without any "If this is a medical emergency, please hang up...", "for English, press 1" business). The receptionist sounded empathetic but efficient, trying to squeeze me in during the lunch break. Two minutes later, I already had a same-day 1:30pm appointment scheduled. When I arrived at the office, I found a clean, simple and quiet waiting room. Not fancy and new, but quiet and warm. The stuff was kind, and again, very efficient. I arrived at 1:10 and was called into the exam room at 1:15. The doctor stepped in ten minutes later after the assistant got the gist of the information from me. He greeted me briefly and went straight to business. Although he was extremely efficient, he nonetheless managed to be very personable. While examining my eye he asked me about my whereabouts this summer and told about his son who was traveling abroad. The whole exam took just a few minutes but he made me feel very comfortable. A minute later he explained to me the diagnosis (I actually did not have a burn, just an infection, which probably caused me rub my eye at the first place), patiently listened and responded to my questions and offered me a medication (that worked and did wonders in a short time). He then escorted me to the receptionist "A kilnex for the one-eye crying lady" he said sweetly offering me tissues to wipe my tearing eye and ensuring last time I understood the regime of the treatment. "If it doesn't go away by Thursday, be here again on Friday. But I am sure you will be OK" he said with a smile. I got my recipit for the copay and was free to go. It was 1:35 and next patient was already called in. read more

My insurance company sent me to this doctor and I was told they didn't do eye exams for glasses.The doctor told me he was an eye surgeon and didn't do eye exams for glasses. Dr . sacks was so cooky and full of himself. He had no respect for me. I went to get a chalazion removed from my eye and he was so rude. He cut it open squeezed it out and grabbed a tissue a smacked it on my eye twice. Then told me to go wait in the hallway. Then he comes again and in front of other people took the tissue off and squeezed more out. How embarrassing. Then told me to be on my way. Went to Dr. Sacks for the first and LAST time a few days ago. The staff was cold, rude and completely unprofessional. None of the staff even addressed me by name. I was told to sit, then someone proceeded to put dilation drops in my eyes without any explanation until she was thru. Instructed to proceed to another room. A man walked in - never introduced himself or told me who he was or asked my name . After a LITERAL 1 1/2 - 2 minute exam I was told my eyes were fine and I could go. I asked about needing new glasses and was told - Oh no you have to go somewhere else for that - he informed me he doesn't do that. (My previous dr. did a thorough exam and eyeglass evaluation during the same appointment - thus that is what I expected). On leaving, I was not given or even offered the standard eye protection glasses for someone who has had dilation. I was sent out with no eye protection at all. Dr. was cold and rude and his staff obviously follows his example. So unhappy that my former dr. is no longer offered by my insurance company. I will pay out of pocket to return to him and will NEVER visit Dr. Sacks office or recommend him to anyone else. I even voiced a complaint with my present insurance provider. read more
