This is my first time using my new insurance and I was worried about calling and dealing with all the paperwork. Acuity was able to see me same day and made it really easy. My appointment was set with Dr. Chew. Let me just say. I was a bad customer this time. I came in with two different older prescriptions and 2 pairs of glasses. It was a mess. I was really frustrated because a new pair of glasses I purchased (with a valid prescription) made me feel disoriented. Dr. Chew was so incredibly kind and patient with me. He even checked my glasses to make sure the company I bought them from didn't mess up. He did a very thorough exam and explained what he was thinking to me and I am really happy with how the appointment went. I went from feeling frustrated and annoyed to feeling relieved. Let me start by saying the ONLY reason for the second star was because the doctor I saw was very good. Outside of the actual doctor being in the room the whole process was a mess. Appointment made and when I got there I still had to wait almost an hour to see anyone. I know this can happen but don't schedule appointments you can't accommodate for. After seeing the Dr I was informed I needed bifocals (damn I feel old now) but not to worry because I could get progressives. I actually felt pretty good about this. We finished and I headed towards the glasses area to get them ordered. 1 person ahead of me, 25 minutes later I was seen. For my insurance there are only so many pairs available that are covered but the selection was something out of a comic book. Probably 40 pairs of very large, gawdy women's glasses and about 5 pairs of men's glasses. I chose the only pair that either didn't make me look 70 or like Dahmer. Cheap plastic glasses with fake wood arms... more on this in a minute. Asked if I could pay the difference for a better pair and was told no, that the insurance would ONLY allow me to get their crappy frames. Insurance problem, I get it, but at least have more options available. I was also then told that progressives were not covered. No option to upgrade. These glasses suck. I have replaced screws 4 times now. Trying to order new ones online and lo and behold no PD number on the prescription. I called in at 10:30am to the number and got a woman who was "helpful" but she could not provide the PD number so I had to receive a text "after lunch" or after 1pm. . No text received. I called again today and got a gentleman who apologized, could not provide the PD number and would have it emailed this time. I asked straight up... they are a call center. Now I get that offices are cutting costs but when I want to speak to my eye doctor's office I don't want to have a call center handling my medical information, and I appreciate ACTUALLY speaking to someone in the office. A simple call to the office could produce the PD number in seconds instead of "by the end of the day" when I called at 8:30 am. Oh, and they scheduled a 1 year checkup knowing full well that my insurance only covers every 24 months. That appointment sure as hell isn't happening with Acuity. read more

I I will never use Acuity Eye Group again. I booked a 4:30 PM appointment over a month in advance for September 23, 2026, and received daily reminder texts for an entire week confirming this time. Then, just one day before my appointment, they sent a message stating their office would be closing early at 4:00 PM and that I needed to reschedule. I called their office immediately twice and was kept on hold for over 40 minutes with no one answering and no option to leave a voicemail. Why they gave a patient for 4:30 PM appointment but the office closes at 4:00 PM? Why send daily reminders for a time but you cannot honor, canceled with only ahead of one day notice? To make matters worse, they asked me to call back, only to ignore the line. The utter lack of respect for patients' time is unacceptable. I would give zero stars if I could. read more

Acuity Eye Group complete botched my cataract surgery. I have been waiting 18 months trying to fix the damage they caused. The first surgery Dr Bockman put in the incorrect lens, the second surgery I lost approximately 40-50% of my vision, for over 12 months and kept being told it was caused by swelling and to wait it will get better, well it didn't. The 3rd operation rotating the lens completely blinded the eye for approximately 4 days. After this surgery my site was worse and when in the sun was painful and blinding. Again told to wait it will get better, their diagnosis swelling and that was a lie to have me pass the 1 year date to file malpractice. After going to UCI Surgeons I found out that 30% of my iris had been destroyed and the lens that's in was no good. After 18+ months my livelihood has been taken away from me, I'm unable to see well enough to partake in my hobbies anymore, can't see in the sun and the chances of correcting my eye is not good. This is the second time attending this place, the parking is good there's a big lot, when you get into the building there's the elevator, the office is at 3rd floor, very easy to find. I received a text confirming an appointment and the time, I was there and the receptionist was annoyed, she told me the dr wasn't at the office that day, I asked why I received the text, she just mentioned a system error, I told her I missed my day at work because of the appointment, and she barely responded. I requested another appointment and she stated I'll need another authorization from my primary doctor. I got it in a few min and she give me a next day appointment, I attended ant the receptionist aren't friendly at all. Last year it was with another doctor, the one entered into the room was different, she didn't introduce herself, as soon as she saw me as Hispanic she said english or HABLO ESPAÑOL? do you understand? I responded im bilingual, she reviewed the computer images and stated saying, if I have sleep apnea? I was thinking is she calling me obese? That was out of place, when she touched my eye she did it with hesitation, awkwardly, then very fast she was finishing the consultation without explaining anything to me, she was walking out when she asked any question? I stated she was rude since the beginning and I didn't appreciate it at all the time there, because of the missing info, she apologized and started over explaining the result for my visit. At the end she corrected right, we are living nationwide difficulties as Hispanics and we are not looking for extra dramas. Making the next appointment for another ocassion, the lady receptionist was at the same annoyed vibe, probably they forgot where's the salary money coming from? Of course from us the patients. Hopefully the service will be better as it has a lot of potential to receive a lot people because of the great technology they have. read more

You can only reach Acuity eye group through a booking center. Twice the booking center gave me times when the facility was closed. I took time off from work, arranged babysitting. My father's eye is swelled due to a cataract surgery. I left messages and messages no call back. The booking center said they tried to call me but I have no missed calls and I don't have anything in my phone log from them. If they called why not leave me a voicemail? I don't even have a voicemail from them. read more

I received a call and spoke with Bre. During our conversation, she mentioned that she did not like my tone of voice and stated that she would hang up. I would like to clarify that I was not being disrespectful in any way; however, I was being assertive due to the mixed information I have received with each call. Previously, I was informed that only the primary care physician's referral was needed and that my father's medical card was not required, as there have been no changes to his insurance and he has not received a new card this year. I followed up twice with my father's medical provider, who confirmed that the referral had been sent. During my conversation with Bre, I was told that no referral had been received and that a medical card was required. This conflicting information led to my assertiveness during the call. When Bre indicated that she would hang up because of my tone, I requested to speak with the office manager. I was placed briefly on hold, and shortly afterward, the call was disconnected. I then called back and spoke with the office manager, Tanya Vickery, to explain my experience. I shared my concern that hanging up on a caller, particularly when there is no disrespect involved, reflects a lack of care and attention that patients and families should be able to expect. I also expressed that situations involving frustration or assertiveness should be approached with de-escalation and understanding, especially when prior communication has been inconsistent. I was concerned when I was offered the option to return to the same staff member who had disconnected the call, rather than being assisted by someone else, as this did not feel like a supportive resolution. read more

I don't know how they work and manage the optometry department. The man is working in this department which I work with him for a new prescription eye glass that I am very disappointed him because my glass had make it wrong twice. I have a broken eye glass in November last year and need it as soon as possible, so the way they make my eye glasses and put me in the disability person since last year. I don't know where to begin. The having to schedule weeks in advance only to have to wait for an hour in the waiting room? The way their system seems to go down constantly so they can't properly see patients? The poor communication - no, scratch that, the lack of very important communication? The list goes on apparently. I found a specialist in their office and got an appointment. This process took months. I finally FINALLY had a surgery scheduled after many visits and many hours of waiting in their office. This was November, my surgery was scheduled for March. Since January, I've been calling their offices asking for follow-up information. I was redirected to several different numbers, offices, and surgery coordinators. Each one told me they'd call me back and they didn't so I had to make repeat calls too. Eventually, TEN DAYS before my surgery, after getting my preop bloodwork done based on the information their office sent my PCP, I finally get a staff member who doesn't redirect me and tells me that yes I'm scheduled for the surgery and they can see it on my file but the surgery is actually canceled and someone should have contacted me months ago. I'm devastated. This process started in May. It's mid-March that I'm writing this. I'm angry. I'm upset. I'm just ... at a loss at how little value this place puts into your time and well-being. Even if your insurance works for this place, I urge you to find a different group or doctor. It's really really not worth it. read more

I have been to both offices and the Costa Mesa office let me leave without a driver or giving me glasses to get home. I chalked this up to my mistake by not asking if I would be dialted upon my initial exam. Dr. Boekman was very nice but brief. I went to the same Dr. differenct location and while their is not a lot of wait time, you need to call to verify that you indeed have an appointment as they forgot to list me. Also, I had questions about the very $$$ 6k lenses I would need that insurance did not pay for and again, felt rushed. I went to Acuity eye group in Murrieta. The retina Dr Culota was okay but I needed a consultation for a vitrectomy. The vitrectomy doctor gave me a lecture on how dangerous it is and did not even look at my eye through the scope to determine the extent of my problem. It was a complete waste of my time and money. The Vitrectomy Dr is Dr Samuel. Don't waste your time. I read he has a horrible bedside manner before going in - but they are the only ones on my plan. read more

This place is awful. They over schedule, they're rude, they have zero respect for people's time. This was my 3rd time going, waiting 30 minutes before they even call me to check in. They can never locate my insurance even though I've been there 3 times and it hasn't changed. I even called a week before to make sure everything was good with my insurance and they said it was, and then I just hear the receptionist whispering about not being able to find it going through a stack of paperwork. No pressure at this clinic. Friendly and helpful staff. No hard sell of frames and lenses. However... my glasses came after 10 weeks. When 4 weeks was up and they hadn't contacted me I gave them a call. Got the usual excuses, no apologies, it was all someone else's fault etc. Finally I did get my glasses and the right eye vision was blurry. I figured I just had to get used to it. But it never improved. Finally, a few months later I had a follow up with Dr. J. Boeckman, ophthalmologist, so I could explain what I was experiencing. I thought I could more information out of her but she was impatient and irritated with my questions. I guess I insulted her with questions an optometrist should answer? She walked away when she didn't want to answer any of my questions concerning my eyesight and the tests that were administered. She spent maybe 5 minutes with me then dismissed me even as I was still asking questions. I just thought that she represented Acuity Eye Group that she could answer my questions with more patience and respect even if the questions were out of her area and responsibility. I had a terrible experience at Acuity Eye Group, I will not be back, and I do not recommend them to anyone. From the start, it was a mess. They input all of my information wrong, including all my contact information and name. I went in for an appointment and was prescribed a prescription for which I need preauthorization from the insurance company for. The doctor's office strung me along for a month that they were in the process of doing that. When I called after a month, they hadn't even started the process and said they didn't know anything about it. The staff are rude, keep you on hold for long periods of time, transfer you around the office repeatedly, and are generally unhelpful. They generally don't seem to know what they are doing. My mom went into this place and was seen by dr Chew for retinal pathy and blurred vision which was supposed to only last for 30 min of being blurry but it's been one hour and she is too afraid to drive home. Acuity Eye Group redeemed themselves when they contacted me to replace the prescription sunglasses that was defective. Michelle and another gentleman from the optical department were very helpful in replacing the glasses. I ended switching to a regular pair of glasses with progressives and transition lenses. Like I said in my previous review, the optometrist, Dr. Chew was pretty thorough with my eye exam. This also includes the staff that did the additional testing. I have now updated my review to give AEG a favorable recommendation. Going forward, I'd like to see the optometry department be transparent by going over the itemized bill with the patient. Charging a patient without explaining to them about lens replacement (an option) should not be an automatic charge. I believe my email to their corporate office necessitated a response from AEG (Santa Ana) to respond to my complaints. I wish I didn't have to go through all that. In conclusion Santa Ana AEG came through and fixed the problem. read more

Emily and Sandra treated me this morning. Also friendly, professional people who make you feel at ease. Clean office with water to drink while you wait. Although the staff and doctor I saw here were absolutely lovely, it would be appreciated if this office was more considerate of their patient's time. For my first appointment, I waited at least an hour for my scheduled appointment. I rescheduled for a follow up test a couple of weeks later, and I arrived for that appointment at 1:20, ten minutes ahead of my time. When I got there, the waiting room was full, and a line of about 10 people formed(in the hallway) to check in. In these times of covid, I don't feel comfortable trapped waiting in a small room with a bunch of other people I don't know for hours, so I rescheduled my appointment when I got up to the desk. I'm not sure that I'll return. Which is a shame, the office staff were friendly and efficient, and I liked the doctor as well. I just don't like waiting so long for scheduled appointments. read more

I will start by saying that the people I felt with in my visit were nothing but friendly and helpful! But there were 2 things that just didn't sit well with me. 1. I made an appointment for 2:20pm on a Wednesday. I checked in 10 minutes early as they requested. I was finally called back 45 minutes later. The waiting from was full as well as the outside hallway. This location is busy! They should either not book so heavily or warn you that wait times are crazy. 2. I needed a prescription. Everything was ordered and 2 weeks later I went to pick them up on my lunch break. Come to find out they are closed from 12 to 1 for lunch. This is not listed on the Acuity website or on their Yelp page! If you are going to close for a period of time during the day please list it! I can only come on my lunch break to pick this up and I have since waisted that lunch. Post that you are closed so that you don't waste people time! read more

I understand busy schedules, but this is not the way to handle customers. Still haven't received a notice about the lenses I paid for. Was told 2-3 weeks and now it's been four. This practice doesn't give a crap about your time. Staff is unprofessional (especially the front desk) and physicians here don't communicate with one another. On two occasions I've had to wait far over my appointment time (first one being over an hour). Their Santa Ana office is a nightmare and is always packed.
