"I can see but I can't see" - Dr. Yoo understood and had me at these words. Only a few people can understand this. I was hesitant to try a new provider but I AM SO GLAD I did. Not to mention - Dr. Yoo is also very great with children! I was with Kaiser for many years but they had never examed beyond my routine eye exam. If you're looking for a great eye doctor, I highly recommend Dr. David Yoo, especially if you're dealing with contact lens issues. He's knowledgeable, attentive, and truly goes above and beyond. I found Dr. Yoo through VSP and he was listed second, but honestly, he deserves to be first. When I called, the receptionist answered right away and was able to schedule me for a same-day appointment. I even called back to let them know I'd be about five minutes late - no problem at all. They also helped me figure out parking (super easy & right across from Karl Strauss). From the moment I walked in, I felt taken care of. The receptionist greeted me warmly and had me fill out the necessary paperwork. Shortly after, two staff members brought me in for pre-tests. They were both incredibly kind and patient. One of them let me know Dr. Yoo was just finishing with another patient and guided me to the waiting area. I barely had time to browse their display of designer frames before another friendly team member escorted me to an exam room, where Dr. Yoo went over the test results with me. Dr. Yoo was fantastic. I told him about my dry eyes, and after running a few tests, he noticed a film over my eyes and asked thoughtful, detailed questions about makeup use, allergies, even whether I might sleep with my eyes open (turns out, I might!). He explained everything clearly and made it easy to understand. He prescribed eye drops, a nighttime ointment, and recommended a heated eye mask. He even ordered some contact lens samples for me to try. Even the checkout experience was seamless. The staff member (Shiela) who helped me was friendly, explained the products I purchased, and helped schedule my follow-up. Honestly, after five years of going to LensCrafters, this was a completely different experience -- more personal, more thorough, and far more reassuring. I left feeling confident, informed, and truly cared for. The office is clean, well-organized, and filled with people who clearly love what they do. Appointment took too long, was not seen for nearly 30 minutes even though I was on time to my appointment. The staff is nice, but they kept trying to up-sell me. I felt very pressured and because I don't know any better, I ended up agreeing to what they told me that I "needed," such as the exam that is of course not covered by the insurance, and the special lens that is also not covered. Then there is their over-priced frames, which are obviously marked up by nearly 200%! I know this because I found them online at a much lower price. read more

It honestly takes a lot to compel me to write Yelp reviews these days, but my experience today at South Coast Optometry blew me away that I felt I had to rave. I've had glasses since I was 7, and have poorer than average vision as an early 30-something. I primarily wear contact lenses, so I usually just go for optometry appointments roughly within a 1-2 year span depending on when my contact lens prescription expires and I've run out of stock. I've lived all over the country by now and had yet to establish long-term care at an optometry appointment due to my frequent change in residency. While I don't know if I'll still be in OC in 5 years from now, I am confident I will return to South Coast Optometry for my regular exams and such as long as I'm here. Dr. Yoo was incredibly thorough and has the right level of interpersonal skills you'd hope for from your health care provider. I've just never had such a detailed exam experience before out of all the optometrists I've been to, and I am grateful for Dr. Yoo for enlightening me on so much about my eye/vision health. It also made me question so much about all my previous eye exams... My past providers were mostly caring and treating me for that day and moment; Dr. Yoo is clearly looking out for my eye health for life. Just Amazing! Dr. Quon, Shiela and the rest of the staff are friendly and welcoming. I've only been coming here for almost a year but I already feel like I know the team. The eye exams are very thorough. Everything is explained throughout the process. The team also try's to make you laugh just to ease your nerves. I had an eye infection recently and called to set an appointment and got in on the same day. The Doctor explained what had happened and how we can heal it back. After the examination, Dr. Quon even tried to find the best prescription to save me money (knowing my medication was going to be expensive). In addition, I had to wear my glasses for the next 10 days which were uncomfortable so the staff was quick to adjust my old glasses which I got at a different office so I'd be comfortable for the next two weeks. I still stand by the Optometrist being amazingly knowledgeable but at what cost. I had my tests, new frames, progressive lenses, scratch resistant and anti-blue, computer glasses essentially. They quoted me close to $1,500 and I paid $794 minus my insurance. It sounded like a good deal; the problem is the progressive lenses made them impossible to use so I basically paid $794 for worthless computer glasses. I was notified by the South Coast Optometry text system to come in for my next checkup. My friend said I paid way too much for my computer glasses prescription, so I went to a new place. I was shocked to find out my new eye test and having my lenses updated with everything they did minus the progressive for $95 with my insurance. How did we go from $1,500 to $794 to $95, I know my frames were $323 but they said my insurance paid for half of it? So, let's say my Frames are $161, my exam is $150 which insurance was supposed to cover it, and at most the progressive lenses, scratch resistant and anti-blue were $300 these are already crazy prices but lest say it is a South Coast premium retail price. So in reality it was $323 for lenses, $150 for exam, and $300 for lenses and they charged me for some eye drops and miscellaneous stuff about another $100, this comes to $873 these are closer to realistic prices not $1,500 so if we say $873 is the total and insurance covers 50% per based on what they told me the real price should have been around $436, Need I say more? read more

I've been coming to South Coast Optometry pretty much since their inception a longggggggggggggggg time ago. It may be 20 years. I have a complex eye situation and have worn glasses/contacts since age 3. Recently Dr. Quon diagnosed me with a second cataract and is working with me to get that taken care of. He and Doctor Yoo go out of their way to serve their patients. All I know is since I found South Coast Optometry my eyes have never been under better care. Dr's Quon and Yoo are connected to the top ophthalmic specialists. The staff of Sheila, Bob, Rachel, Nikki, Lesley and the past including Yumei and Karen were/are phenomenal in helping coordinate RXs, insurance, eye health protocol and of course new lenses (contacts or eye glasses). FYI, SCO only carries the latest technology in eyeware and RX scripts. The doctors are constantly staying on top of the latest technologies to manage prolonged vision health. I went in because i read they focused on stigmatism and dry eye. The reviews i read stated they were a great place to get an eye exam and it sure is. They check your eyes with at least 5 different machines. The Dr. goes through a thorough break down of your exams, which i loved. Bad receptionists are a business killer. Invest in thoughtful people and train them right. Receptionists are the face of your company and this space is far too competitive to host even one bad experience. Tried to make a 9am appointment, was running late and called at 9:09 to let them know I was 5 minutes away. The receptionist said "that should be fine" and let me continue my drive. I arrived at 9:14 and 30 seconds, by the time I was greeted the receptionist let me know I was 15 minutes late and that I would need to reschedule. Shocked I looked at my watch and sure enough it was 9:15. I asked him if I'd arrived at 9:14 if it would have mattered and he said "probably not" - no empathy, no sorry there's nothing we can do, 9:15 and one second is apparently to late, or maybe it's 9:14. Still not sure. Thanks for letting me know on my drive that it's 9:15 or not at all. If the receptionist had had some foresight he would have informed me during my call that there's a hard stop at 9:15. If so I would have turned around and rescheduled over the phone. There are 2 LensCrafters within a mile of this shop. Don't they know how commoditized their business has become? It's a customer service business now, and this business has none. read more

I found this place on the insurance website and I wish they had told me it was high priced!! I'm very unhappy with what I left paying out of my pocket. The doctor himself, Dr. Quon was great! Very friendly, explains everything to you and a funny guy. He answered any questions I had and in a very friendly and patient manner. But OMG, I paid WAY too much out of pocket. They unnecessarily charge $85 for a contact lense fitting fee?! I have never heard of such a thing. I've been to a few optometrists in the past and they have never charged such an obsurd fee. After finally getting that done I specifically asked if I purchased a particular pair of eyeglasses could they be returned as they were a gift and was told yes. Come to find out after waiting 3 days for my appointment, they were a final sale. I completely understand policy but the attitude and overall energy of the staff was poor at best.
