You can truly tell how smart and knowledgeable she is, but what stood out the most was how much she genuinely cares. I was a patient of Dr Jeffrey Safarik's at Newport Mesa Optometry for many years. I spent thousands on everything from eye care to sunglasses and supplements that he sells. So I was taken aback to find that years of excellent service and a strong doctor-patient relationship were compromised by a decision to deny service due to a few missed appointments over a two-year span, especially after I had been charged for those missed appointments. Until the hiring of the new office manager, Holly, I had never experienced any issues. It seems she has taken it upon herself to make decisions on behalf of Dr. Safarik. I am truly disappointed with the management choices that have led to the decline of what was once a fantastic service. On top of which they sent me invoices for people I don't even know. Terrible patient services, not to mention sharing private patient information with others by sending me erroneous invoices...HIPAA breach!!! read more

Seriously irritating experiences at this place. Definitely switching over the buying contacts online from here on out so I don't have to deal with a front desk. I used to come here a couple years ago and it was fine. I moved and came back and they said I was a "new patient" and needed new paperwork because their system counts anyone who hadn't been there for two years as a new patient. K makes sense, I'll go through the new patient process again. When you do a contact fit test they, they don't tell you before hand that it's extra on top of copay which is annoying but not a big deal. I pay the for the test at the end of the visit and they collect a copay. Then the next time i come in they say loudly that "you are delinquent on your account" with other patients around me.... Apparently the last visit wasn't a regular visit and THEY didn't collect enough for the copay and then try to casually say the insurance company nickels and dimes. No. Take accountability. it's your fault for mistaking a specialty visit for a regular visit. YOU marked it incorrectly to insurance so now they are collecting the correct amount. Don't present it as I'm delinquent and it's the insurance's fault when you messed up. How you frame things makes impressions. They move your appointment cause the doctor is out of town or they overbook an appointment. There are other things that are forgivable on it's own, but it's starts to add up. the last irritating straw was when I had to cancel an appointment at the last minute. I was aware of the $50 dollar cancellation fee and was prepared to pay when the front desk said I already used my one time "new patient" cancellation freebee. I was totally confused, I didnt know there was a freebee and honestly don't care......I hadn't cancelled anything last minute in the few months I had been coming here. Finally it comes out that I Apparently used my freebee in 2020 or 2021......Three years ago. This is laughable ......So im a new patient when you want me to be but when you need to collect I'm suddenly a three year patient. I'll pay the fee but definitely don't need to come back to any of this. read more

I came here for an eye exam and found out I finally need to get glasses. Sigh, aging! I wasn't terribly excited about it but it's definitely time and necessary and I'm grateful this is the place where I got my eye exam. Everyone who works here is very friendly and patient and detail oriented helping you to understand what your options are. They were extra patient with me trying to find glasses as I was super picky and a little bit overwhelmed. I look forward to getting them in a week and had a great experience with this office. I felt like they had a lot of good options and selections for glasses. I also didn't feel pressured to buy the most expensive pair.They definitely have high tech services and I'm considering looking into the dry eye options they have. Was looking for a new optometrist near my home, was very disappointed in the service here. The assistant who did my initial tests was training. Someone else came and corrected how she was doing things. She was definitely polite, but did not explain what we were doing, why we were doing it, and didn't let me know before hand that she was about to blow air in my eye, or what each test was for etc. Everything she handed me was super wet with alcohol. Back and forth between rooms. Just very unorganized. Dr. wanted to dilate my eyes, was not notified about that when I made my appointment, or I would have planned for it. Assistant and doctor both touched my eyes & face, without discussion or warning. Was not comfortable with the process at all, no education, had to ask a lot of questions to understand things along the way. read more

Horrible experience with this facility all together! DO NOT recommend this place! When I did go to pick up my glasses after 2 weeks, I was not able to see clearly. was blurry & fogy! But the optician told me " wear it for a week or so & you get use to it" Dumbest comment I ever heard ! Waited & tried to use it for that period of time, no positive result! Called my insurance & they told me to call them & ask to see if they can fix the problem or return your money .I left a message& when the doctor calls me & said " you should of read our return policy, when you singed the paperwork" They already charged my insurance for $691.00 & they charged me as well $271.00 just for a simple glass to see the Far! Because they used my benefit for this year, I have to wait till next year to go to decent, honest place to get a correct glasses. Until then I wasted my time & money to this Awful organization! Wish I could give zero not one star. Couldn't even get a simple 'how are you?' From ANYONE working??? They just ordered commands to me and didn't try to engage even though I've been a client for the last year. Rude, cold, won't be returning ever and definitely told everyone I know about the icy attitude and lack of bedside manner bc the women who work here lack such social skills, grace, and radiate hatred. It was like they were actively trying not to even crack me a smile. I felt so icky after visiting this place bc the vibes were truly rock bottom. Wish I took my business elsewhere but have to be content with dragging this place to anyone who will listen. Dr Safarik does the most comprehensive eye exam out of any of the optometrists I have worked with. (I work in optometry and work with over 250 eye docs in OC and selected this one if that tells you anything. He is fantastic!) Having worked previously with Ophthalmologists I am extremely picky with who I go to for my eye exams bc they are so detrimental to catching early diseases. Most disease (for example glaucoma) have absolutely no symptoms until it's too late and you can have permanent vision loss. That's why I go yearly-SUPER IMPORTANT! He performed close to a 1 hour exam, had me complete many eye exercises that test for early signs of eye diseases and had a great bedside manner. He even has a device that thoroughly evaluates your meibomian glands to determine if you have dry eye or not. (Apparently I do and I will be going to see him for a dry eye treatment.) The staff is awesome (ask for Holly who is the best at picking out the right glasses for your face and style.) So I must say I had the best experience at Newport Mesa Optometry. The doctors are so knowledgeable and accommodating. I felt like they genuinely cared about helping me with my eye issues. And I fell in love with all the girls that work there. They are so sweet, and trust me I know I'm not the easiest patient to work with (I'm supper picky, sorry guys) but they didn't mind at all. It was like I was with my girlfriends picking out glasses. I didn't feel pressured to buy anything. And they all were completely honest with me when I was asking which frames best fit my face. I had a terrible experience with Newport Mesa Optometry. I have been to six other optometrists in my lifetime and this office is definitely the worst by far. I had thought to try the office because of the high Yelp reviews, but now I am suspicious about who was giving those reviews. Please take time to read the other 2 one-star reviews. I've never posted a review before but my hope is that others will read this and avoid this office. The first optometrist I started with left, and I had to start over with a new optometrist. I hadn't heard from anyone for a follow-up appointment, so I called and was told someone would call me back. No one called me back and when I talked to the front office girl, she had no record of me calling or why I would be calling. The glasses and the prescription were off and I had to go back to have them redone. The worst part of it was that when I went to new optometrist, I found out that someone with my vision issues should not have been prescribed the glasses that I had paid over $300 to get. I also had contacts to pick up and my husband went in and had to wait a fairly long time for assistance, even though there were several girls in the front office. I tried this office because it is close to my home here in NB, but now I don't mind driving further for better service and prices. The office seems big and fancy (probably that's why their prices are higher), but you will be better served by a more skilled optometrist or at a chain optometry center. read more

I went in a little apprehensive because, due to a variety of circumstances, I was had not had a proper eye exam in 19 years and was still wearing those glasses. From the moment I walked in, they treated me like family and put me at ease. The eye exam was the most comprehensive I have ever experienced, and every person involved was skilled, friendly, and professional. Dr Safarik has an excellent demeanor. He did not rush through the examination, and took the time to explain the various test results and his recommended course of action. Holly was a great help in selecting frames; she has a great eye, and even the frames I would not chosen for myself looked good. She also helped select the lenses best-suited to my work and recreation needs. It was refreshing to find a place where the people are well-suited to their jobs and enjoy what they do. I needed new glasses and saw Newport Mesa Optometry on my way to coaching at Newport Harbor. The staff there makes you feel like you are at home. They answered all my questions that I had. I went to Newport Mesa Optometry yesterday for the first time to get my annual eye exam. To be honest this is my third eye doctor I've used in the last four years and I selected this location solely due to convenience but I will now be a loyal patient. I was very impressed. Dr. Misquitta was fantastic as was the other woman who assisted her (sorry I didn't catch your name but I loved your glasses!). I was walked through everything that was done and they don't do the dreaded air blast in the eye thing here (which is the reason I have previously procrastinated my eye doctor appointments). He was extremely professional in his demeanor and cleared up some misunderstandings I had. He took the time to explain that the cost breakdown of my initial examination and tried to get me out as quick as possible. Safarik was great, his staff was friendly and very informative. I am happy to say that this practice really feels like they care about their customer service and patient care! This review has been a long time coming. We were referred to Dr Safarik years ago as my husband needed new glasses. His vision is lousy and as a result he has had many experiences with optometrists that can't get his prescription right. According to my spouse, Dr. Safarik is the best optometrist he has ever had. Considering the amount of times we've moved and had to change doctors, this means a lot. A few months ago, I hit over 40 "ahem" and wanted some cool frames to go with my worsening vision. After a thorough exam, he noted that I had papilledema, a swelling of the optic nerve that is usually really hard to see and indicative of serious health probs. He recommended I see an opthomologist ASAP and gave me some notes for her about what he saw. In short, I found I have a serious condition that required immediate intervention to prevent stroke. No symptoms other than some slightly blurry vision, either! My new optho doc was so impressed she wanted his card, as did my new neurologist! So, I am stroke-free and have cute frames to boot. I think what keeps bringing me back to Dr. Safarik and Newport Mesa Optometry is how thorough they are. I've been a patient for the past 4 years and each time I go, I leave there knowing they did their best to care for my eye health and my vision. I have friends who go to other optometrists and don't receive anything close to the extensive exam I get at Newport Mesa. Dr. Safarik really cares. It's nice to find an optometrist who isn't just out there to get a sale, but who really takes the time to care about each patient. I've also gotten 3 pairs of glasses there and they have a very large selection of stylish and well priced frames! They also will clearly explain your insurance benefits and work with you on finding the best looking and best priced frames for whatever budget you're working with. I was referred to this place by a long time friend from NHHS that I work with now. I figured paying a little extra to have a hometown place to go to would be good. I did get my initial eye exam and I got my glasses and such but I was sold on adding contact lenses which I could add "training and fitting" I never received a call. After I got my CC statement I followed up and was told I would get a call. Then I would drop in (about three times throughout a year and a half, always being told by a red haired lady at the reception desk that she would call me) at this point I don't care about the charge. I just dont want my friends and colleagues to go here. You're better off somewhere else. First negative review I've ever done, but I don't like to be given the run around for such a long time. It shouldn't be on the customer to keep following up after spending a substantial extra charge on something you never got. Thanks for the lesson. I'm always afraid of getting ripped off by eye doctors to take tests that you don't need to take. At Lenscrafters I spent 4 hours every time I would go in for an exam and new glasses. When I got new lenses for frames that I already had it cost me $300+ with the exam and testing fees. I knew they duped me... It took a lot less time and I was more thoroughly informed at Newport Mesa Optometry. I am super picky about frames for glasses, but the two staff members in the front were very helpful and patient with me. They explained my insurance benefits very clearly. It had been over 3 years since I went to get my eyes checked. I didn't know how my insurance worked (even after calling the insurance company) and I wasn't sure how the eye exam would go or what I was in for since the few times I have had my eyes checked it was always a different procedure. The staff at NMO were awesome. They were really quick about seeing me, and I love that they are technically more advanced then most doctors offices I have gone to. I was able to do the new patient paper work at home and just email it back to them. They text message you about your appointments and I love that. Dr. Safarik, was so nice and explained everything and even answered my questions which I knew were probably elementary, but he didn't let on that they were dumb questions. He was incredibly through, couldn't ask for a better Dr. Their eye glass selection was great, it took me a while to find the "perfect pair" but I love having choices. I am also getting color contacts from them, which I've never had before, they will walk me through the process of how to wear them, care, etc. They called and rescheduled my appointment for the contact lesson, because they wanted to make sure that I have enough time to practice putting them in and taking them out, as well as have enough time to answer all my questions. From the friendly staff (who offer you chocolates while you wait!) to the doctor himself, you are definitely getting well-cared for as a patient. Be careful. They are bait & switch sales people. I called the office, gave my insurance, and was told my insurance covered in full. After my appointment, I was then asked for my credit card for additional charges for my 'contact fitting' in addition to my insurance coverage. I reminded them, I took the initiative by calling them ahead of time and providing my insurance and they assured me all was covered. She says, ok I'll email you the prescription then. I never received the email so I called and they sent me to a woman named Shantra or something similar to that name. She said, "That was our front desk gals fault that she failed to mention this additional charge but we will now need an additional $80 for the fitting fee and we will not issue you your prescription until you pay us." I think the saddest part was how smirk and aggressive she was. Clearly she has had this conversation on numerous occasions. Please beware of going here. I told them I simply did not budget for the extra unexpected expense and I really need my contacts. She was smug and said...I'll give you 10% off and if you feel you need to complain...go ahead & she laughed very prideful and rude. I used to go here for nearly 10 years in Crystal Cove and they recently merged so this was my first time ever being additionally charged and treated with such disrespect under this new management. I started going to dr. safariks office 3 years ago and was so impressed with his friendly and professional service. his eye exam was very thorough and he made sure I was comfortable and answered every question I had patiently and intelligently. this is the first eye dr that I feel treated me fairly, did not charge me for anything that was not covered by my insurance. I was grateful that I could get a pair of stylish, comfortable bi focals with transition lenses for much less that I have been paying at other places. the office staff is always helpful and helps me choose the right frame for my face- they are honest even if I really like the way a frame looks on the rack- if the frame doesn't suit me, they let me know. I had another appointment recently, and I am still impressed--the service is still the same great experience! Awesome way to run a business! read more
