I had an incredibly bad time here during my last appointment. They did not thoroughly review my updated insurance information and overcharged me. They say it was ONLY $75 but I question the amount now and if they did that in the past. I didn't even realize until after leaving the place some days later. Very sketchy. Almost more importantly than just the insurance error was the poor quality of service. The lady that does the general check of my eyes before seeing the main provider was an extremely rude and condescending young girl that was new since last time I was there. It disappoints me that the office lacks updated technology and is still using a severely outdated eye puff machine. Having the same technology for the past decade is not a win in my book. Furthermore, the the doctor barely looked at my eyes before keeping my same exact prescription. I really just don't feel all the service is the same anymore as they refused to update technology and money grab rather than updating the care to be in line with other providers in the area. They really slacked on providing me good customer service. I also had to wait about 20 minutes post my appointment time when they were simply chatting extra with the person who was there before me about unrelated topics which is a little annoying. I didn't even get a greeting besides "Oh you can sit down and wait there." There are much better tech forward, kind, ethical, and transparent providers in Tustin/Irvine area. We come here for 3 pairs of glasses, one for me, my wife, and my child. Dr. Kim is very kind and patient. She answered our questions and gave useful tips. She seems like a experienced provider. There are a few reasons why this review isn't scored higher. First, there was a customer ahead of me using some of the machines where you have to place your chin and stare ahead. The techician did not wipe down the machine to sanitize it after the customer ahead of me used it, nor did he do so after I used it. This is really unsanitary and makes me not want to return. Second, we ordered 3 pairs of glasses with a promise that the office would call after they arrived. In each case, we had to call the office and learned that the glasses were already there. This is such a small thing ... if the office is too busy to make a call, they should instead just tell people to call and inquire rather than make a promise and not deliver. Thus, if you calibrate 3 stars as "not bad, but not really great" that's what I would say. read more

So happy to find Dr. Chen! We've had the same optometrist for years and she finally retired. We haven't found a good doctor until we came here! Dr. Chen is so kind and explains everything. Both my daughters are also going to her now and came back stating they had the same experience and how she made them feel so comfortable and how easy she was to talk to. Front desk is also very helpful! There seems to be some issues each time with their system and getting back to you quickly, but other than that, everyone is great! I was debating on writing a review since I didn't actually go in office. However, the customer service I received over the phone was so disappointing, I had to write in. On Saturday Jan 24th at 10:41AM, I called in to confirm my 2PM appointment that day and to see if they had any last minute openings for my husband. Before I could even finish my sentence, the lady I was speaking to interrupted me and said in a frustrated tone "we don't. we're booked all day". So i said, okay no worries, Can i still confirm my appointment is at 2pm or 2:30pm. I gave her my name and DOB. She repeated back the incorrect month, to which i repeated the correct month. She then said "well i can't hear you, you're breaking up".... i wasn't mad? i just repeated it. i understand and i even apologize. for what? idk. then, she says she cannot find me in their system. she checks another system and still could not find me. I then said maybe it's possible it's under my husband's info since i'm under his insurance. and she said "uh yeahhh probably" with an attitude. she asked for my husband's name & DOB. In one answer, i stated his first & last name and DOB. she then says "HOLD ON I CAN'T TYPE THAT FAST" i said okay, sorry. she still couldn't find us in the system. She then starts questioning me with "are you sure you called here" i said yes. she said "are you sure you called 20/20 optometry" i said yes. she said "on bryant in tustin" i said yes. i told her that i called in that past monday (the 19th) and spoke to someone at 2:38pm. she then said "we were doing training on monday"... so does that mean the person training did not schedule my appointment? does that mean because training was happening they were too busy to schedule the appointment? she then said "did you give her your info??" i said yes & let her know that when speaking to the girl on Monday, i even asked if she was able to see what my coverage & copay is. but that girl told me she was "not legally able to tell me" and that i will know more once i'm there for the appointment. which i was fine with. then as i'm saying that, the lady on saturday said "RIGHT. We're not legally able to tell you" i said okay that's fine. i understand. she then proceeds to tell me what my copay would be and that they wouldn't know more until they see me since I am a new patient. Which again, i understand. After all that, I said "so just to confirm, i do not have an appointment today at 2?" and she says "no. you're not on here". i said okay, thank you and was ready to end the conversation. and she then asks me "so do you not want to schedule an appointment?" i said no thank you. and we hung up. anyways, with alllll that being said. I just wanted to get an eye exam done since this is new insurance. as much as i wanted to go here due to all of the positive reviews, that experience alone changed my mind. i tried to be mindful and understanding that maybe the person i spoke to was not having a good day or it was just super busy, however i don't think the way she was speaking to me was okay. read more

For those of us blessed enough to have eyes 20/20 Eyecare is a blessing. Dr. Chen is engaging and provides proper knowledge and at times humor. The staff, especially Patrick is solid and attentive. The selection of frames are okay, however if you do have a design in mind then you can ask them if they are able to acquire it. I was looking for sunglasses (& glasses) for an upcoming Hawaii vacation and they were able to come thru with an Oakley one that I wanted within 10 days, simply amazing. Susan Chen was recommended by Ophthalmologist. I called for the first time. Someone called Patrick told me to "Stop calling us! We are not interested in what you're selling!" I said I'm a first-time caller to make an appointment. He apologized. Too late. Decided not to make any appointment based on first impression of front desk Patrick. Somewhere in these reviews I read he was fired but apparently, he still works there. Nothing personal. Don't know this guy but definitely insulting the way I was talked to. read more

Spoke to a gentleman (NOT!) last week that I need to talk to you about adjusting the prescription for my daughter. He is not very helpful and kinda rule! I told him that my daughter's prescription is kinda weak and she has a difficult time to read from a distance that is why I need see Dr. Chen to re-adjust the prescription, possibly just a 1/4 more. He then asked me mockingly "Are you a doctor? How do you know that?" What????? I can believe his manners!!! This is how he interacts with his customers??? They called me for rescheduling my appointment for the second time, because of absence of their optometrist. The guy woh called me was so impatient, and aggressive and pushed me to answer about the availability of time. When I said that why 20/20 changes my time every week, he didn't pay attention to my words and said that if I want the new appointment or not? I was shocked on his rudeness and rush behavior. I didn't make it to the office as I cancelled for a couple of reasons. One is I simply couldn't understand the person who handles the phone. As a business you need your "first point of contact" to be with someone who speaks clear English that clients can easily understand over the phone. Had a few phone conversations regarding insurance and I honestly struggled greatly to understand what she was trying to say. Secondly I felt their "contact lens add on" to a eyeglass exam was overpriced. They want $90 for adding the contact portion of the eyeglass exam. That's far more then I have ever been asked to pay before. I call West Coast Optometry (Dr Bowman) down the street and their charge was a very reasonable additional $30. That's an entire $60 less. Plus I could understand and communicate with the staff perfectly. Read my review on the other office and go there, they rate far better on yelp. It's just down the street. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Chen's for several years, but due to the high markups on frames at optometrists' offices, I would usually take my prescriptions to Penney's or Sears and get 4 pairs (on sale) for the price of 2 in any optometrist's office. In the interest of general personal downsizing, I have donated all my old glasses, and decided to splurge and order a pair of sunglass bifocals and a pair of work (computer/distance) bifocals, with designer frames which were pretty expensive, for me. The cost was almost $360, even with the 30% discount that my vision insurance offers on buying 2 pairs of glasses. That was a Saturday. The following Wednesday morning, two business days later, an office person from 20/20 called to tell me that I "had to get some type of coating," on my work glasses. I said I don't want any coating because I've had them in the past and some reflect light -- bright and reflected light are migraine triggers for me. So the office person said that in that case, it would be $98 more for the second pair of glasses. I said I wanted to cancel my order. She said she would check. Then called me back and said that I couldn't cancel because the sunnies were already made, so they would just charge me full price for them. I said that wouldn't work for me because I would pay them full price for the sunnies and when I went somewhere else, I wouldn't get the "second pair" discount just buying a pair of work glasses. I said I would dispute the credit card transaction with my bank. She said she'd call me back. She called and said they had "worked it out with the lab," for the agreed upon (and already paid) price. Great -- because it's my vision coverage POLICY to get a 30% discount on the second pair, I don't know what the LAB had to do with it. On that day we exchanged at least 9 phone calls. Yesterday was 2 weeks since I talked to the office person, no glasses yet, so I called 20/20. A different office person told me that in their notes it showed they had to send my glasses to a different lab due to "errors." And she would check and call me back "tomorrow." Today, I did receive a call back from her, and for some reason the second lab had "broken several lenses" (not the frames, she emphasized) and then had to put the glasses back through their production cycle, so it would probably be another week to get my glasses. Draw your own conclusions. I think next year, I'm back to JC Penney for glasses. Never had a problem with them... read more

I have been with Dr. Chen for years and will always go back to her. She's so nice and easy going extremely patient and listen to my concerns and address everything with me. Just this last visit she gave me samples of different contacts to try but definitely not pushy for me to buy which I love hearing others experience as pushing products on patients at other places. I know there is a Dr. Kim also at the practice but I've never seen her so can't speak for her I highly recommend Dr. Chen and her team over the years she's given me great tips and recommendations to keep my eyes healthy and my prescription hasn't worsen in years! After a horrible experience at Costco's eye center (the optometrist was late to my appointment and then rushed me during my exam) I was very pleased to find Dr. Chen. She has such a professional yet, warm & friendly presence. She is also very patient and makes sure that you get the correct and most comfortable prescription. She will recommend contacts that work best for your situation and even help you pick out frames too. How I found out about this place: I called costco and said I wanted eye exam appointment. They gave me 20/20 eyecare phone number without mentioning it wasn't part of costco optometry. When I called to make an appointment I didn't pay much attention because in my head I'm still thinking I am calling costco eye center ( I think receptionist who answered the phone mentioned the name of the place, but I simply didt pay any attention) after making my appointment the receptionist told me that they are located in different place not inside the costco. When I actually went there on my scheduled day, I found out that this place is actually separate eyecare center. But they give costco discount and charge same as costco if you are member. About the service: Dr. Susan was very nice and informative. The contact lense she suggested was really comfortable.I love my my new contact lenses. There was no waiting, I got started right away. The place is small but clean. They have quite good selection of Maui Jim sunglasses. I will definitely bring my husband to get perscribed sunglasses here. Costco doesn't carry many choices of frames anyways. read more

I was referred to this eye care center from Costco and have been going here now for the last 3 years. They take VSP and the doctors that work at this practice have all been very helpful and genuinely caring as have the other employees who run the simpler eye test and the front desk. They are also very sweet when you let them know that you are going to them only for the exams and buying your actual glasses or contacts at Costco. They are also TLC affiliates so if you choose to get Lasik through them (like I did) you can still see your same office for your pre and post op check-ups. read more

Costco sent me here because they do not have optometry in El Camino location. What a disapointment. They tell me 89.00 on the phone for my exams. Last week i went in they charged me 59.00 i assume they know what they are doing didnt have reason to question it. Today i go back to pick up trial lenses they tell me they were supposed to charge me 119.00 last week and want money i say no way they told me last week 89.00 or i would have went elsewhere. Dr Chen argues with me saying I should know it wasnt that price and its my responsibility to pay right amount. I paid 89.00 and walked out. If I could give them zero stars I would I just got off the phone with one of the receptionist (4/22/21 6:30pm) and was referred to by a friend and had the worst costumer service experience ever. I moved to Newport and was looking for a new eye doctor that took my insurance. Usually I have no issue with running my insurance due to my circumstance minus that fact, the attitude and responses I heard on the phone today was completely unacceptable. The "idk what to tell u figure it out" type of attitude is completely uncalled for in a professional environment I get it's 30 minutes before your shift ends but please be more friendly to costumers. I called my friend to tell her, and she also told me today when she tried to confirm her appointment about her usual checkup she received the same unprofessional attitude.
