NOSTALGIA REIGNS! 4.0…read more Growing up, Hello Kitty was all the rage. Although its popularity took a brief hiatus in the U.S., it made a strong comeback in the 1990s and continues to enjoy another resurgence today. One weekend, my hubby surprised me with reservations for afternoon tea. One minute we were shopping at some of my favorite stores at Valley Fair Mall, and the next we were standing in the Hello Kitty reservation line. I have to admit, I was excited. The host warmly greeted us and escorted us through a door in the back to the private Bow Room. The name couldn't have been more fitting, as a large Hello Kitty figurine wearing her signature pink bow stood proudly across the room. As you might expect, just about everything was pink: the door, walls, chairs, menus, napkins, and even the Christmas tree, since our visit was during the holiday season. In the spirit of Hello Kitty, I just happened to be wearing a splash of pink myself. The tea menu featured a variety of black, green, and caffeine-free teas in an assortment of flavors. I chose the Hibiscus Cooler, a refreshing green tea that I enjoyed. We were then served fresh strawberries with cocoa cream, a light and pleasantly balanced start that wasn't overly sweet. The afternoon tea was presented on a tiered server with both savory and sweet selections. The savory selections included a cucumber sandwich, egg salad sandwich, beet hummus pita, and a chicken salad croissant. The sweet offerings featured a seasonal scone, Hello Kitty mini cake, raspberry macaron, strawberry shortcake, and an apple pie tart. Every item was well prepared, and we enjoyed the entire selection. Did we enjoy our afternoon tea? Absolutely. Would we return? Probably not for afternoon tea, but perhaps for their à la carte dessert selections. It was a fun experience to share and one we're glad we tried. However, at $70 per adult, it's priced similarly to the world-famous afternoon tea at The Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, an experience we found to be truly extraordinary. There, we appreciated the timeless elegance and traditional presentation. By comparison, Hello Kitty Café offers a more modern, whimsical, and energetic atmosphere with loud background music. If you're a devoted Hello Kitty fan, this is definitely an experience worth having at least once.

Then again, vibe is probably 99% of the reason people would come here for afternoon tea, haha. The cups, sugar cubes, utensils are all HK based which is a cute touch. Afternoon tea takes place is a private room, which is also a nice escape from the busy mall. In terms of food, it is a miss for me. Everything was way too sweet and the taste was not very good. The quantity of food is actually pretty big (I'd skip lunch if you're interested) and we ended up taking a lot of it home. There was one strawberry tart that was pretty delicious, but that is about it. In terms of service, I'd describe it was poor. The cashier was not super friendly directing us to the check in spot and orders would take awhile. To the point where we had to ask multiple times for the same thing despite only a small number of customers being there at the time. I also tried asking some questions on their online portal but received no response. The experience was cute and all, but considering the price, the service, and the food, I would not recommend it.

Drinks were also super delicious! I love how there are actually fun coffee drinks to go with the cafe, and it doesn't feel gimmicky at all. The cat area was super clean, and there are toys to play with the cats. Cats are available for adoption too! We loved it here, and the price was really fair. It was about 28 dollars for the entire experience and it includes one hour of cat time and a drink. Make sure to be on time for your reservation because you can only go in during the hour you reserved. If you are ten minutes late, you don't get an extra ten minutes after the hour is up. So worth it and would recommend for anyone to try!

Parking nearby is horrendous, super busy even on the weekdays before the rush hour so I can't imagine weekends when people are out or other high traffic times. Get ready to make some rounds and pay for parking and be careful since there's very specific signage and times. The cafe itself is cute and cozy. Front area is a gift shop with lots of cat themed gifts and goodies like keychains, stickers, and such, and also some items from local and small artists too, which is neat. The cafe also has community events like movie showings ("The Cat Returns" was one of them which is a great choice) and cat yoga. If you're local, you can also get a time stamp if you are a frequent visitor. Definitely follow their socials for more information. There's reservations online and you can also do walk ins if it's not super busy. You can book for a 55 minute visit or a 30 minute visit. PRO-TIP: There's a discount for students, so if you want to be surrounded by some feline friends while you study or relax, great place to do so. You can hang your coat on the rack and there's a mini shelf area for your shoes. So you gotta walk in with socks! With each visit you can either get a hot cup of tea or a cold can or box drink from their fridge (sparking water, juices, etc.). Very refreshing and you can enjoy it in the cat area too. Sanitize your hands before and after visiting. There's lots of cats hiding around, sleeping, walking around, and some are super friendly and will go into your lap. There's toys you can play with the cats with and there's a wall of adoptable cats. Lots of seats or you can opt to sit on the floor with the cats too. There's relaxing lo-fi music throughout too. Pretty cool that they rescued 2 cats from Qatar and neat that we got to see them. As with all cats, some can be a bit spicy but it's usually just a warning teeth rub. I own cats so there's nothing new. I'm horribly allergic to the cat that specifically lives in my house, but I didn't get an allergy here, meaning that the cats are clean and well taken for. My favorite was a large sleepy orange boy, Ron (permanent non-adoptable resident) that was hanging out next to me the entire time.

We thought that was a thoughtful and considerate gesture. As for myself, I ordered a breakfast burrito with bacon, sausage, eggs, and cheese. It came with a side of salsa which added some freshness and helped balance the heaviness of all the meat and cheese. Overall, it was a good hefty burrito but just a little greasy. Kenny himself is another reason to visit. He's very friendly and chatty. He even took a selfie with us and displayed it on the monitor in the restaurant, which was a fun and personal touch that really made the experience memorable. The restaurant has a cozy, homey feel with rustic tables and chairs. It feels like you're visiting a neighborhood spot. The only downside is that the service is slow. Kenny is running the shop himself, and every burrito is made fresh to order. Sure your food is fresh and made with care, but it's definitely not the place to go if you're in a hurry. If you have time to spare, Kenny's is well worth the visit. The food is satisfying and Kenny's hospitality is what makes this spot unique.

Nobody is such a loser to have the time to write such long detailed reviews just because.

But Katsu is really becoming the new hype of the day for Japanese food, following the Sushi, Ramen, Japanese Curry, Katsu trend. So I came in with a critical view. I feel like Yoshoku in general may be next but I yet again digress. The box sandwich came in a cute little box. The inside was packed so I couldn't get a chance to fully appreciate the cafe, but the service was nice though the pay line may have moved slower than hoped. I'll say this. This is "the" best katsu sando in the bay. The katsu is crispy, but little on the softer side. But this hardness matches perfectly with the absolutely tender, soft, juicy pork wrapped inside. I'm looking at the menu again and it all makes sense. The pork has been in shio koji, making the meat ever so tender while adding the subtle but complicated marinated flavor. The cabbage is plenty, but not over packed to take away from the main Katsu flavor. What really perfects it for me, was not only the sweet and savory katsu sauce, but the mayo with dash of I think a karashi mustard. That slight tingle, the perfect kick gives a powerful awakening of flavor that really sets the it apart. This is art, an artisan. Culinary art is the refuge no raging rampant AI slop "art" can ever hope to touch. Until the day we get some cyborg implant to our brain into gustatory, olfactory functions. Even then, I don't think any tasteless tech bro are hopeless to create anything unique or beautiful.

Cute cafe on University Ave…read more We always go there when we visit Palo Alto. Their hot chocolate is really good. We get the Cioccolata in Tazza. It is thick and creamy (see video). Also, it is just perfectly sweet, not overwhelmingly so. We also tried their flourless almond cake - it was quite dry, brittle and tasted like toasted and ground almonds. Will return for the hot chocolate and pass the cake! There is no option for to-go (for drinks) and you pick your food at the billing desk itself. They serve with a smile.

Everything else about Cafe Venecia is a problem, and it has been a problem every time I've gone, including today. The outside tables are never cleared. Crumbs, coffee rings, somebody's abandoned napkin. No one comes out. Ask an employee about it and they'll point you toward a rag you're welcome to fetch and use yourself. That's the arrangement here -- you buy the coffee, you bus the table, you wipe it down, and the staff watches you do it. Today I asked for a bowl of water for my dog. The answer was no. Not "we're slammed, give me a minute," just no. So I asked whether they could put a little water in a to-go container instead, and was told, "Well, I can't give you a to-go container because we don't do them." Sit with that one. They don't do to-go containers, which means everything in the place comes in real dishware, which means the building is full of cups and bowls. They had exactly what I was asking for. They simply weren't going to hand one over, and they made sure I understood that by the tone. So: a café on University Avenue, with sidewalk seating, in a town where half the foot traffic is people walking dogs, has decided that tap water is outside its operating capabilities, and table cleaning is outside its operating capabilities, while charging Palo Alto prices is somehow well within them. There are a dozen places within three blocks that manage the coffee and the manners at the same time. Go to one of those. One star, and the star is for the beans.

After looking around, the first ones that caught my eye were Kick Ass Cupcakes. Even though it was only a couple of days before the party, I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. They were absolutely delicious and a huge hit with both the kids and adults. The cupcakes tasted just as amazing as they looked.
