This is a local donut place I actually found through Yelp. I love me a good donut, so that's what I came here to get and I was not disappointed! Their donut lineup is fairly standard, but of a high-quality so if you just want a friendly donut shop with great donuts, Hooz is your shop! BUT! As I continued coming here as time went on, I tried other items on their menu and THOSE turned out to be so good that I barely even get donuts anymore and instead grab the ham & cheese & jalapeno croissant. They're seriously fresh and warm and moist and delicious and possibly most importantly of all, reasonably priced! Ambience is pretty neat too, like a donut shop and a 50s diner had a baby. I come here regularly and you should, too! read more

We only tried the jelly donuts, but they were a good sign of Hooz donuts being better than the norm. The dough was light like cake, not heavy nor greasy. The fruit filling was not cloyingly sweet jelly. Instead it was a fresher fruit. Kudos! read more

Such a great find! The staff here are incredibly sweet and welcoming--they were especially kind to my toddler, even taking her order and giving her donut stickers, which totally made her day. The donuts themselves were high quality and absolutely delicious--fresh, soft, and just the right amount of sweetness. There's also plenty of seating both inside and outside, which makes it a really comfortable spot to hang out. Huge bonus: there are Tesla chargers right in the parking lot, and it's super easy to get to from the freeway. Overall, a really enjoyable experience--we'll definitely be coming back! read more

There are donut places that are open 24 hours then most of them close in the early afternoon. But we were looking for donuts after dinner and saw that Hooz donuts is open until 8 pm! We grabbed an apple fritter to go. It did seem when we stopped by around 7 pm, there wasn't a huge selection. The apple fritter was really good at tasted fresh. We will have to come back earlier in the day for more options. The parking in this huge complex was easy. read more

This place is 5 stars! There is just something about their donuts that make me slightly obsessed. I have been here a few times picking up donuts before work or just stopping in to get a sweet treat for myself. They never ever disappoint unless its because they have run out of my favorites but there is always still something else to choose. Definitely my local go-to donut shop. read more

I started going there 3 years ago just for the great donuts. Love the bear claws and occasionally they make an apple pie donut...YUM!!! Then they added sandwiches. I tried a couple of the sandwiches and they are fire!! Now I go for the sandwiches, the sandwiches are so filling that I don't want anything else. Yeah right, I always get a donut as well. The owners Rick and Rita, are the greatest people. This brother and sister are the sweetest people you can ever meet!! I am a loyal customer of theirs! Go and enjoy the food and drinks!! read more

I came for National Donut Day (June 6th) and it looked like they were closed so I called in. They had closed a little early so I didn't get to make my purchase, but the person on the phone was so friendly that it's encouraged me to come back. Hands down, some of the best donuts I've ever had. Extra crispy on the outside, soft and flavorful inside -- and the fillings actually taste like what they're supposed to. Nothing overly sweet of artificial. You can tell they care about quality here. Coffee's fine -- just your standard cup. Totally drinkable, but with donuts this good, I kind of wish the coffee stood out more. Still, it's a solid stop for a quick breakfast or mid-morning pick-me-up. I can't believe I haven't been here sooner! It was my first time in the plaza and Hooz caught my eye, since I have a soft spot for mom & pop donut places. I popped in and was greeted with a smile, and cases full of donuts! I only got 2 regular glazed donuts but wish I got more!!! These donuts were so FLUFFY, which made it unique to other place's donuts I've had! I was given an extra 2 donut holes too which I thought was sweet. They have an extensive menu of sandwiches too, which I'll have to try next time I come to visit. The store workers/owners were great to chat with as well, I'm impressed and so glad they've kept the shop open for so many years! Definitely coming back soon to support :) read more

FOOD: The donuts are sooooo good! I love their Ube donut. The classics are delicious too! I've gotten their breakfast croissant a few times and it's solid. SERVICE: 10/10 Always friendly and prompt. NOTE: Seating is limited to maybe 3-4 tables. This is not a place I would hunker down and study at. I'd suggest you grab your delicious treats and head out. read more

Hooz Donuts it's a great little spot today I enjoyed a turkey sandwich with some delicious donuts paired with a strawberry smoothie and mongo smoothie. These smoothies are so tasty it's like drinking a hi chew candy mouthwatering good. If you're hungry and in the area this is a great stop. I absolutely love this place. I have been coming here for years but it turns out I never even knew they had a lunch/dinner menu! I had their number 9 (egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich) with added pepperjack, 2 jalapeños, avocado, and hot sauce! omgggg! Rick is the kindest person you might ever meet and the two bros who work the evening shift are a vibe. I really love this place so much and I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't have this place in their lives lol. Great neighborhood donut spot! Friendly customer service (super quick too), and great donuts. My favorite are the French crullers and old fashioned - he threw in a few donut holes too which is so sweet. I was only gonna get a half dozen but I wanted to try them all so I got a mixed dozen ($16.99 with some upcharges for speciality donuts like apple fritter). No fuss, great donut shop in the Almaden area. There's some seating here but most people were grabbing a box of donuts for the morning. I'd recommend coming in early so you get your pick of your favorites. Parking is easy which is always a plus. read more

I was craving for some donuts and was looking around for a local place nearby. Hooz is in the Curtner plaza tucked away behind the thrift store near by. The owner was super friendly. I got a dozen donut holes and 2 glazed donuts. I was half expecting these to be a typical donut but these were much more fluffier than you'd expect. It had the right balance of sweetness to dough. If you are South San Jose and are craving some donuts for an affordable price and friendly service, give Hooz Donuts a visit. You won't be disappointed. read more

Come early otherwise it's slim pickings! Super friendly service. The people that own and manage it were genuine, charming, and lovely. I was anticipating more options, but I came late - after the gym this past winter. Their chocolate bar, chocolate old fashioned, chocolate glaze, and chocolate sprinkles were our favorites. The donuts were sweet, not too dense, and brings nostalgia w/ each bite. I remember eating donuts at my mom's work when I was 7 or 8 years old. When life was more simpler. I visited Hooz Donuts on a Friday morning and was greeted by warm smiles from staff and the enticing aroma of their scrumptious donuts. Hooz Donuts in 30 Seconds! My Take: Fantastic little family owned donut shop. Service is always friendly, they always hook us up with some free donut holes for the kids (when we walk over together), and donuts are fresh and fantastic. My Order: Old fashioned and buttermilk are great. Most of the donuts are pretty "standard but great". Never a bad order! Final Thoughts: Great go-to donut place. Run don't walk to Hooz. Local shop, super friendly you feel like you're part of the shop. Recently expanded to sandwiches too - so why go to the McDonald's or anywhere else. My new favorite donut place! Tried some of the seasonal ones like pumpkin spice and ube and they were amazing. They even had vegan donuts that were just as good, and I usually hate vegan stuff. Plus this place is family owned and they were super nice. Definitely recommend! read more

Specialties

Our donuts are more crispy than most other location. We also provide great ham and cheese croissants, jalapeño ham and cheese croissants, turkey and cheese croissant, and plain croissant. For the freshest donuts come to the shop right when we open, 4:30AM, and you have a high chance of getting donuts hot off the line. Croissants are out of the oven by 6:30AM and still warm. Donuts are made fresh daily! We bake for a second time during the weekdays as we are now opened until 8:00PM. We typically have another fresh batch of donuts ready by 2-3PM. We offer Ube, Matcha Green Tea, and Vegan donuts every Friday and Saturday. Our seasonal flavor for August - November is Pumpkin Spice, which is available every Friday & Saturday.

History

Established in 1990.

Throughout 1969 to 1989, the location was originally a Winchells Donut Shop. In 1990, John Ung purchased the establishment and change the name to Hooz Donuts. The name Hooz Donuts was inspired by an owl, which is the mascot for Hooz! All together there were 5 Hooz Donuts location, with the original location of Hooz being on Lincoln and Curtner Avenue. Currently, this is the last remaining Hooz Donuts in operation. In April of 2023, John sold the business to Rita and Rick, who are the new proud owners of Hooz Donuts! Although this is their first shop, Rita and Rick has ample experience and background with donuts. They also have a wide variety of support and mentorship from their parents and families that also own donuts shop in neighboring cities. Their first taste in donuts goes back to their childhood, where their parents worked as the head bakers. Rick and Rita are siblings that love donuts. Rita's favorite donut is the French Cruller and Rick loves creating new flavors.

Donuts are engraved in our hearts, minds, and life. Our parents were engrossed in the donut life in order to keep food on the table at home. Our parents were able to save enough money to one day own a donut business of their own, and it inspired my sister and I to also pursue the lifestyle. Not only did we go there on Sunday afternoon; we also returned on Monday mid-day and brought Adored Grandson, too. The first time DH and I split the 8-inch hot pastrami sandwich with au jus on the side. Major yum! The cashier suggested adding their house sauce, which was a great addition to the flavors of the pastrami and sourdough. The au jus added another layer of meaty, salty flavor. I was very happy with that choice. DH also had a cup of clam chowder, and I ordered a chocolate chip cookie. We were happy campers. As I was looking around the interior space, I noticed several seasonal items. One was a lobster roll with bacon sandwich. How did I miss that at the outset? Lobster roll as a fast casual sandwich shop? Hmm! That was the reason that we went back the next day, actually. I raved about the place to AG, who wasn't raised steeped in sourdough flavor goodness, so wasn't as stoked as I was. Still, he really enjoyed his buffalo chicken sandwich. DH and I each ordered our own 6-inch lobster roll sandwich on our return visit. That is the only size that they offer for that special sando. Their take included lots of lobster, plus some crunchy celery and light mayo over tomato and lettuce, so it was served cold. That was fine, but the bacon could have benefited from a warm up. Otherwise, it was delicious. Because it was rich, probably DH and I could have split one sandwich and just ordered something else on the side. I was definitely full on the drive home. The interior of this location is cheerful, with oversized collages of images of California destinations and fresh food items on the feature wall. Solid place to grab a sandwich for a quick and go or you can eat outside the market with seats and tables.
