My husband and I visited Beholder for the first time last night, February of 2019. We loved our meal, and the staff were helpful and very friendly.
We started with the lightly smoked beets and parsnips with root vegetable tahini and walnut/pistachio crumble ($13). First, the beets and parsnips were roasted beautifully, with a subtle smokey flavor - no way did the smoke overpower the vegetables, which we all know have a very distinct flavor. The bonus was the amazing root vegetable tahini. Whoa...great flavor! The pistachio/walnut crumble added a nutty crunch that brought it all home. We loved this dish and noted if that was all we had, we'd leave happy. For entrees, we both ordered pasta which is incredibly rare for us but, bucatini was on the menu and I have not indulged in bucatini for ages. Our server let me know that it was a smaller portion since it was such a hearty pasta and I was fine with that because we had been eyeing the dessert menu (incredible!) and knew we wanted to save room. To add to my indulgence, I ordered the optional shaved black truffle over the bucatini. OH MAN. Yeah, I ordered that. It was an extra $20. Ok, I do not make a habit of such extravagance but I have to say it was worth it. The chef came out and personally shaved the truffle over my dish - and he was very generous. The ingredients (chicken brodo and burnt onions) along with the house made pasta and black truffle came together beautifully, creating a harmonious dish. I treasured each and every bite. True, I could have eaten double the amount but if I had, I would have been over the top full/bloated and that would have resulted in no dessert and me leaving the restaurant disappointed, and guilty. No, the bucatini does not come in "hoosier size" - and that's OK. I am so thankful I had it, and plan to have it again if I am lucky enough to see it on the menu a second time, since the menu changes with the availability of local ingredients.
My husband had the lobster congee risotto w/Korean lobster tail, scallions, and bonito. He, too, ordered the shaved black truffle but, we have to say that should he have a do-over, he would not order it again. The risotto was just the right texture and there was plenty of tender lobster. He enjoyed the flavor the bonito brought to the dish, though he did say his one tiny complaint was that the dish as a whole was a bit salty. Still - he enjoyed it very much.
Side note: Our server told us that the items lower on the menu, such as the lamb shank with polenta, were more hearty (bigger portions) for someone with a larger appetite.
I'm moving on to desserts.....ahhh, the desserts. In all transparency, the dessert menu is what got us in the restaurant. It did not disappoint. It was an exciting, delicious experience. My husband ordered the passion-fruit glazed golden beet, with tofu peanut mousse, and chewy peanut sponge cake. ($13) A-MAZING. Sweet-tart, peanutty, deliciousness. Truth be told, I want his as well as mine. As for me, I ordered the bacon and white mulberry cornbread with maple ice cream and rum vinegar pickled hazelnuts.($15) It was a party... nay, - a PAR-TAY- in my mouth. Each bite different, depending upon the combination on my spoon. I'll say this: all of the ingredients were necessary, meaning they brought their own unique contribution to the dish. The bacon was salty - quite salty actually, but the maple ice cream stepped in and said, Hey bacon, I got this....ease up buddy....but your smokiness is totally rockin." The cornbread brought that very familiar texture that cornbread brings - a bit grainy but in the best way possible. It was so smart to NOT candy the hazelnuts (anyone can do that) but instead pickle them in rum vinegar. It was yet another love punch to my tongue.
So bravo to the good folks at Beholder. We will be returning. read more
