We had been to Beholder at least once before and loved it. However, something has changed. We loved it two cocktails and 2/3 appetizers (squash carpaccio, fresh tomato salad with miso mayo). The beef tostada turned out to be made of sliced beef tongue. Surprise! The duck pork burger was good. The flat iron steak was unseasoned, not tender, and not served very hot. Not worth $65. The manicotti with braised lamb shoulder was under seasoned too and served in a soup of oil. Peaches and Cream was delicious, but peaches were shredded and a bit scant. More cream and peaches. I love the ambiance of this restaurant. It's cozy yet warehouse like and simply one of a kind. Our meal was delicious! I'd recommend checking the menu online before you go because their menu is pretty small and changes frequently. The menu is a smidge pricey so we only go for special occasions. The drinks were very good and they were very accommodating. The service was great, very welcoming. Sit at the chefs counter! It was so much fun to watch them cooking. Had reservations at the Chef's counter for dinner. Server was a 10/10! Recommended the Last Word cocktail since I enjoy mezcal. The winning dishes by far were the Carpaccio of Summer Squash (which was bursting with flavor from the toasted hazelnuts and lemon oil) and the delicately balanced flavors of the Ginger Tumeric Kanpachi Sashimi...Yum! Would not order the hamachi collars again and the bone marrow fries weren't anything special for $17. It's interesting to see something along the lines of fine dining on 10th street but even more impressive once you walk in. The vibe is quaint, super cool that you can see the kitchen while you're seated. Drinks were amazing, one of the best cocktail menus out there for sure. I went burger but wish I had not. The menu is fairly simple they give you only so many options but each has its own execution. Burger had a literal inch slice of cheese on it and a large amount of pickled onions on it. Different but I think it overwhelmed the burger. Fries were overcooked, not very enjoyable tbh. I think that Beholder is on the way to being something truly special, but for now there are components that fall too short to justify their prices. Ambiance is very cool and I am willing to bet it's a great place to go out just for drinks, but the meals my partner and I shared had some glaring concerns. To start, the cabbage salad and potato salad were heavily over-salted. Now, we are grateful that our server removed and comped the cabbage, but other than the heavy handedness with the salt, the salad's flavor just wasn't hitting the mark. Pieces were too big and textures felt unbalanced as well. For the entrees, again, considering the prices you would expect a symphony of texture and temperatures. Some were over-salted, uninspiring, and genuinely it shocked us. I wouldn't come back unless the price reflected a true experience. Hooooowever, the crowning glory was their ice cream. We stopped in here for dinner early last Friday after catching a late afternoon movie at Kan-Kan. We snagged one of the last 2 tables that weren't booked from a reservation and got our order in before the rush, so it was perfect timing! The restaurant has quite a few different sections, but we sat in the furthest left area of the restaurant that faces one of the entrances to Woodruff Place. They have a lot of fun artwork on the walls, the one right across from us I kept imagining were sisters playing mermaids together lol We each started off a with a cocktail (I got a French 75, he got a sazerac) and shared the broccolini salad. It was so fresh and flavorful! My husband felt the garlic was a little over powering, so he left most of his off, but I loved it. For mains, I ordered the KFC- Korean Fried Quail and OMG. The portion was huge- I was not expecting a whole quail, it was definitely very filling. The kimchi was sososo good, but I wish there had been more of it. I would 100% order this again if it was still on the menu when we went back, but it was so good that I would also be torn to try another amazing dish. My husband ordered the patty melt and it was juicy, tender, and came out on very fresh bread. The french fries were crispy and were nicely salted. I also got a glass of their sparkling (only one option) to drink with dinner and it was the perfect amount of bubbles and touch of sweetness. For dessert we ordered the Meyer lemon ice cream and the burnt banana w/ Parmesan and honey. The Meyer lemon was very fresh, tart and tangy. The burnt banana was on another level. I would have never thought those flavors and textures would pair so perfectly and I was so happy we opted to try that flavor over the cranberry walnut. The Parmesan was so finely grated that it melted in your mouth and added just enough savory to balance the burnt banana flavor, with the honey really bringing it all together. We also each got a pour of the Madeira Bual 1987 and overall it was just a perfect little dessert. The staff were all very friendly and were always making sure we had our waters full and empty dishes/silverware removed from the table. The bathrooms were very clean as well. My oh my, now I know why everyone raves about this place. I came for the first time during Devour week and it was everything I dreamed of and more! I love the quirky decor and the cool layout. It's divided between 2 sections and there are endless seating options (bar, high top table, bistro table, large tables for big parties). I got 2 different cocktails and both were amazing. We did the devour menu and I got the grilled Caesar (yum), the walleye (so juicy and amazing), and the pancake ice cream (I'm a sucker for ice cream). All of it was incredible and I love that the menu changes often. I love an innovative menu and this place does it perfectly! My only negative would probably be the wait times. I stood at the check in for about 15 minutes before someone came up to greet me. The courses are timed out to where you're waiting for your next step. I am obsessed with this place. Granted, I've only been 3 times in the past 2 years but I think about it all the time. The most recent visit was at the end of May. As always, the ambiance is very "cool" feeling with different seating locations That give you a different experience. Sometimes, they have a DJ but always playing good tunes. We got to sit at the bar that overlooked the chefs cooking, which is always an automatic win for me. So cool to see them doing their thing. We went on a weekday so they were busy enough yet not slammed. we got to chat with the manager for a little while about our cocktails and wine. The wine menu is incredible. We got some cocktail with verde chile in it and we loved it. Got the oysters, papaya salad, burger and the fish. So delicious. I really want to try the pasta rags with wagyu. read more

May be the best thing on the menu and is a must order. The Kohlrabi Caesar salad was a fresh interesting take on a Caesar salad but left much to be desired at the $15 price point. The chicken quarter and the cereal milk tres leche were both good, but not anything special. For how much Beholder is recommended and how nice the ambiance is, left a little disappointed and expecting more. Have dined here three times. I always fall in love with at least one of the dishes, while others are just good. The second visit we ordered a crudite plate for the table and it was stellar. That was years ago and I still think about it. I mean... it was raw veggies but the accompaniments were so yum. The latest visit was for our anniversary and the salad (again, veggies) blew me away! See my picture of this amazing brown butter radish salad. The kitchen eliminated the bread crumbs to accommodate my allergy, but it was amazing without it. The sherry vanilla ice cream.... omg... omg... just o.m.g. I wanted to buy a gallon of it and take it home to eat the next day. Why not five stars? While the menu is inventive and I feel pleasantly surprised by how much I like my food, it isn't consistently amazing. It's also salty. After each visit I retain water (I have an inner ear disease that is set off by sodium) and I can taste that some items are way too salty. Still this is one of my favorite spots. Administrative notes - for being a James Beard semi-finalist (them), and wine enthusiast (me), I cannot believe it took me 3 months of living in Indy before meeting a stranger at another restaurant before finding this place on referral. Perhaps that's why they weren't packed on a Saturday when I rolled in? Bios on the website read like a desperate resume, when there's obvi some street cred earned. This review is shared in collegial love. Vibe is very nice with the space provided. Lots of little nooks and a warm bar. Bartender was edgy about my request for a few samples of wine, although their program is one of the only spots in Indy where you can sit down and order some beautiful glasses from France, Italy, Spain, and beyond. I've been looking for this type of menu ever since I landed here - a diamond among gems! I tried the tasting menu and was a bit disappointed the food didn't follow the same caliber of delivery. Started strong with the Pink Moon Oysters balanced with some warming nduja (Italian herbed sausage) oil, citrus, and mignonette. Not everyday an oyster is as original as this one! The Ora King Salmon Crudo was very fresh & served in a generous portion, lots of things going on that ended up tasting like salmon sashimi in salsa with too much chip on top. Appreciate the concept, but the flavors just didn't work out. Working towards the main, the carrots were cooked to a perfect al dente crisp, lightly glazed & topped with toasted pine nuts, however; wish they had stopped there because the apricot purée (though tasty on its own) did not compute texturally or flavor-wise. Finished with the Iberico Secreto Steak - some of the most delicately tender pork I've enjoyed, however! It was sadly under salted and drowned in oil, so I kept digging into the "salsa verde" hoping for more flavor but got more oil, weighing things down. Josh was a breath of fresh air in the bar, serving up beautiful craft cocktails with some rare finds whether you're looking for bourbon, mezcal, whiskey, gin, cordials and beyond. My ultimate takeaway is that Indy is in quite the predicament with establishments such as these - they're not quite exemplary enough to make the list and compete with neighboring cities like Cincy and Chicago, but after some minor tweaks, might keep the house packed for the small but growing clientele in Indy. There's also the ongoing challenge to overcome Indy's market preference for the known, the familiar, even the chain. To that I would recommend keeping some staples on the menu - we might agree to enjoying Chef's favorites (soon to become our own) each time we return. I'll be interested to see what has changed (and what has stayed the same) next time I visit. read more

One of the best restaurants in the region. New menus rotate all the time, you can tell that this place is run by people who are passionate about food and do this out of love. The staff are friendly. Looking at the other reviews, I think the reader should know that Beholder gets unique ingredients and tries new things all the time. It's not going to be cheap, and your portions aren't going to be like an Applebees. If portion sizes are your main priority, go elsewhere. We were very disappointed with our experience. The portion sizes are ridiculously small. It implies that its high prices are warranted for the quality of technique and ingredient, but we did not see anything distinctive to justify the prices. It is more like a Carrabba's Italian Grill, with tasty entrees, but with smaller portions and higher prices. (Note, Carrara's has a bread service and Beholder does not.). Nice little spot off of 10th near downtown. Lots of murals and Knick knacks in the place which add a fun element to the interior. (Apparently there's been mural controversy....hah) Phenomenal service. We sat at the chefs counter and got to watch them cook and plate all of the dishes. Neat experience. All the chefs and waiters were extremely attentive and nice! We started with the scallop crudo and the eggplant tartare. The scallop crudo was other worldly. If I went back I may just order 5 of those. The eggplant parm was served with a fry bread and together they packed so much flavor! For our mains we did the spaghetti and the halibut. I normally wouldn't order spaghetti anywhere but this broke the mold for what spaghetti normally is. Bright and delicious. The halibut was served with some clams and boy was that dish amazing. Avoid... Mediocre food masquerading as fine dining... another high priced joint preying on those who don't have time to leave Indy often. The food itself is *not bad* but its terrible for the money and the menu is littered with pretentious vernacular trying to pretend it deserves a Michelin star. If I had to make a local heads up comparison, I'd say its closest comparable is Pier 48... the menu is actually quite similar if you strip out all the culinary BS in the titles & descriptions. Compare their menus and you'll get a chuckle... compare their food heads up and you'll probably frequent P48 more often than Beholder. Ambiance is basically a darker version of its sister restaurant, Milktooth but in a newly gentrified corner of the city (across from a Family Dollar). My girlfriend and I have been on 2 occasions and decided previous reviewers were distracted by their accredited wine menu and the hipster service / line cooks. read more

Some of the food options can be simple dishes played up with naming conventions, but it's mostly great food done really well. The savory ice cream options are always amazing! It was our first visit, dined at 5:30 on a Saturday night (our 10 year old with us and noted that in our reservation) and were seated in a small front area so we never saw the rest of the restaurant. Bummer. Assuming we were sat there because we had a minor with us? But it was such a small, crowded space with no music. There were 2 other tables sat just 2-3 feet away from us. TLDR: Had the tasting menu at Beholder last night. Four courses. I liked three out of the four dishes. The salad, black cod, and dessert were delicious. Service was friendly but a bit disorganized. Nice wine and cocktail list. If I lived here, I'd likely be a regular at the bar for the ala carte menu. -- Went to Beholder last night with two friends. The three of us had the tasting menu. We enjoyed a bottle of Schug Carneros Estate Winery Cabernet with dinner after starting with a glass of prosecco. I like the look and feel of the restaurant. All of the staff were very friendly. First course: ceviche with chips. House made tortilla chips were delicious. While I love spicy food, the hot peppers used in the ceviche overpowered the dish and I could not discern between each ingredient (i.e. fish or vegetable?). My least favorite dish of the dinner. Second course: Little gem lettuce salad with green goddess dressing. I love little gems and this was one of the best salads I've ever had in my life. We all agreed at the table it was absolutely delicious. Fresh lettuce with creamy dressing. Third course: I had grilled ribeye which was cooked perfectly and very tender. However, the star of the show was the black cod with lions mane mushrooms. I *hate* mushrooms or I would have gotten it. The black cod was melt in your mouth delicious! Fourth course: Strawberry with an absinthe cream. Fresh berries and a delicately sweet cream that was touched with the funky bite of absinthe. It was delightful. While all the staff were friendly, it felt a bit chaotic and we had to wait considerable time to often get our table bused, which is a pet peeve of mine. I also wish the food runner would have explained what our dishes were. He'd drop it off and say "Black cod" and leave. As a result, we would all read the tasting menu out loud so remind ourselves of the details of each dish. It was a bit too casual of a vibe for what is presented as a beautiful fine dining experience, IMHO. Weird observation: everyone working there last night was a guy. I don't know why I noticed, but, everyone appeared to be a man who works there. I thought that was kind of funny. However, if I lived in Indianapolis I'd like be a regular at the bar. The special sauce had me scrapping the plate at the end for any drippings because it was so tasty. Wow! This place was pretty great. First time ever at a place like this, and it was super enjoyable. My friend and I both got the 4 course taster, while her partner got the skewers. Oysters 3/5 - pretty standard IMO. Small, but tasty. Roasted Carrots 4/5 - wasn't a fan at first, but it got more delicious the more I ate lol Rib eye 5/5 - best part of the meal, for sure. Perfectly cooked...I just wish there was more of it. Roasted onions definitely still had a bite to them. Coffee ice cream 5/5 - STRONG coffee flavor and very delicious if you are a fan of that. I'm not a huge fan of coffee, but it was still very delicious Cucumber salad 3/5 - refreshing but the miso dressing was definitely too strong Salmond 3/5 - delicious, but compared to the rib eye, it was very disappointing. My friend definitely preferred my dish over her own and had some regrets lol Squash carpaccio 5/5 - wow...super unexpected, but this was my 2nd fave dish of the night.
