First time here very good combo sandwich, the need is lean and tasty and the sausage is very good too! I think I have found my replacement for Portillo's beef. They offer a simple and small menu from beef, burgers, hot dogs and salads. They also offer fresh cut fries and Coke products from the fountain. read more

What a great spot. I've driven by it nearly everyday for 10 years but I never stopped in and now I'm kicking myself for those years of missed opportunities. The service is great, the interior is bright and clean, and the food is amazing. Both the beef and the cheesy beef are fantastic and, though I've yet to try, the hamburger looks amazing and my son gives it an enthusiastic thumbs up. The fries are tasty and made fresh but, if I had to have one complaint it would be that they're a bit greasy and if they're placed in the bottom of the bag, the stick together quite a bit. I suppose it's my own fault for ordering a hotdog and a beef place. But two hotdogs I ordered the skin was so robbery on the last half of one I couldn't even fight through it and it just force the insides of the hotdog to squeeze out. Now there's a real good one in the Fox that I know of. Nice, clean, friendly sit down area. The food was full of flavor. The beef melts in your mouth. The bread crunchy and thru toast it. Having grown up near Gene & Jude's in River Grove which IMHO, is the gold standard for the Chicago Rubber Dog (Vienna hot dog, yellow mustard, sweet relish, onions & sport peppers on a steamed bun with the greasy fresh cut fries on top); The Beef Shack's hot dog is right up there with Gene & Jude's. I always ask them to cook the fries well done as they can sometimes be undercooked and soggy. So if you're in the area, stop by...You won't be disappointed! read more

I gave Beef Shack two more chances and since going back, The service and food were great! Reggie is awesome took great care of me made sure my orders were spot on and just how I wanted it. Had moved to the area over a year ago and debated hitting up the BS because it's Chicago land and hello, PORTILLO'S, right? Well, I am making the switch! The beef isn't the "garbage" off the bottom of the pot. It's actually sliced beef, that tastes awesome! Prices are pretty much the same, and works out better when I don't have to wait for 20 minutes for my food. The fries were greasy, for sure, but if you were looking to eat healthy, you shouldn't have come here in the first place. They were good, and I am one who loves crispy fries. Reasonable price for a soft drink with free refills. I can also get hot dogs and burgers for my kids when we decide to order out! Forget going to the big name places in Chicago. This place has the best beefs I have ever tried. I'm a huge Portillos fan. I truly believe every thing they do is fantastic but never do I get there Italian beef because it is way too small and I refuse to pay for there skimpy beef. BEEF SHACK REVIEW from a first timer... Recently moved to Geneva and yelped the craving. The Garlic bread cheesy beef with mixed peppers is big, delicious and worth many return trips. I was really disappointed this weekend, I have been there in the past and the food was decent but after Sunday I will not be going back. I got the cheesy garlic beef and it taste like the bread was under cooked and they just put a garlic spread on it, the meat was very chewy and over cooked. My son had the chicken sandwich with the mayo on the side but when we got home guess where we found the mayo ? Yep on the sandwich which he didn't care for; on top of that, the chicken wasn't even seasoned ... fries were ok just not a good night for Beef Shack read more

I've eaten here before it was Beef Shack. I worked there in the seventies and eighties (Carm's). I would go out of my way once I found out how good the Italian beef is here. I came couple times a year. But.... last week they broke my heart. They changed the bread. It doesn't toast. It's a lump of dough. The beef is now average. I lost faith in them. read more

I'm not a big beef sandwich fan but my boyfriend took me here and it was pretty awesome. I had the mini beef Sammy on garlic bread with mozzarella and hot peppers. I also got au jus on the side with fries and the shack sauce. Clean place on the inside and you can see them prepare the food. I'll be back. read more

It's official - the beef sandwiches here are better than Portillo's. The beef is flavorful and not fatty, and the way they toast the buns and melt the cheese makes the perfect sandwich. Lunch was starting and there was a small line, that moved fast. I ordered mini beef garlic dipped, dog with everything (fries). For food prepared after I ordered, it was ready quickly. I especially like the toasted bun for the beef, the garlic is awesome. The beef beats Portillo's. I unwrapped the dog. The Vienna dog was not on a poppy seed bun. It was also smashed closed and suspected it did not have "everything". No tomato, no dill slice, no celery salt. An ok dog. The fresh cut fries are great. Crispy on the outside. Soft inside with a good potato flavor. I say the Beef Shack is great for beef and fries. Red hots, not so much. read more

Being a in construction I travel alot so I was in town looking for good eats. The food was good that why I came back a second time. I had just got out of work so I was wearing a badana on my head. I noticed my aungus burger had no pickles so I ask the man behind the counter if I could have some. He turns at me looks me up and down as if I was asking for his right lung and says we have no pickles (ouch) so I go back to my seat and look at my burger again and noticed I have no onions​. Love the beef shack! They catered my daughters 16th birthday and it was great. Don't miss the burger with chipotle mayo cheeseburger because that is the unsung hero on the menu. Ok, the food is pretty good and I've been coming here for a couple years. On the other hand, their customer service is atrocious. Yesterday, I came in armed with a Groupon that offered $10 for $5. I bought it some time ago and it was set to expire yesterday. So I get to the counter to place my order and am greeted by a guy who challenges the coupon, takes my phone out of my hand and tells me it's only worth $5. I try to explain the coupon and attempt to get my phone back from him to point things out. He pulls MY phone away from me and alerts a manager. Manager simply tells him to give me $10. He argues with the manager, all the while, completely ignoring me and what I was trying to say. Food gets made, employee keeps eyeing me with a pouty look the whole time I'm eating. I finish and get in my car, pull around the parking lot to exit, and there he is, pouty employee standing in the window to purposely make eye contact, wave and show me a creepy smile. I stopped the car in the middle of the parking lot and stormed back in to tell the manager. He immediately defends the restaurant while I'm trying to tell him what the guy did. He shuts up long enough to realize what had happened, yells at the guy "we're going to have a serious talk", and hands me a $10 coupon for next visit. I realized that every time I have brought in a Groupon (3 times), I have been questioned and given a look by the cashier. Why do they advertise an offer if they are always so skeptical of it and treat customers like this? Why do they hire such jerks to greet the customers? Screw that. Not going back. read more

First ones in at 11 am and the place was disgusting. Tables were dirty, floor was dirty, counters were dirty, nothing had been cleaned. Made me wonder if the back had even been cleaned the night before, since obviously the night shift didn't do any cleaning they were supposed to and the morning shift didn't care. I was a big fan of this place when it just opened. They seemed to have it down. Toasted bread, juicy and flavorful beef. And when dipped, the bread maintained the crunch. A perfect sandwich which made my need to drive to Johnnie's not that much of a need at all. Great fries as well. I was a regular. But unfortunately my last two recent visits were not all that great. My beef sandwich was nothing more than a soggy mess. Much like the ones I get and complain about at the hit or miss I call Portillo's. I will say that during my last visit my son got a double dog. After one bite he said, "hey it's like Gene and Jude's". After taking a bite I agreed with him so kudos for that. But please guys bring back that beef sandwich that I once craved. read more
