Don't Fear : Rich will be there! My wife had developed a recurring painful and itchy series of welts with no known cause. It was her dermatologist who asked if we could have bed bugs?!? The prep list given to us by our building's pest control company was very long and beyond daunting. There was no way in hell we could have done the prep on our own. Rich is a literal life saver!!! Such an honest and selfless man who really cares about his customers. TLDR: Like many other reviews here, we did not end up using Rich's services because he told us we did not actually need them. We were being swindled by other bed bug services telling us we had an infestation, and Rich helped us realize we were bed bug free even though it meant losing our business. After noticing a few bites, we had a canine inspection from a provider of our building's choice. The inspection was positive, ruling that we had bed bugs. However, the inspection lasted less than 10 minutes and the canine handler didn't attempt any visual inspection of the areas that the dog alerted. We then reached out to Rich to help us prep for treatment. He insisted on an in-person assessment before accepting the job. When he visited our apartment, he visually inspected all areas where the canine had alerted. Since he did not see any visual evidence of bed bugs, he informed us that he was skeptical of any infestation and recommended that we get a second canine inspection before proceeding with treatment. He connected us with his trusted colleague John Downey at Pest Pro Inc. who arranged for Eric Miller to come do a second canine inspection. Eric and his canine came and performed an inspection lasting 40 minutes. Eric's dog never alerted after being taken around the entire apartment multiple times. Eric also performed a thorough visual inspection, completely taking apart our couch and bed to do so. Eric concluded that we absolutely did not have bed bugs and that my bites were likely from dust mites - a common and unconcerning thing in NYC that does not require extermination of any kind. Rich is one in a million, absolutely the best! He helped us prep our apartment when we got bedbugs in 2017 and was a calming presence throughout a very stressful time. Not only did his team do great work, but he also made himself available to us before and after should we have any questions. When we found a centipede in a boot after treatment he was more than happy to look at the picture and reassure us we had nothing to fear. Fast forward to August 2020 when we were worried we had bed bugs in our new home in Westchester. We had someone come with a dog who did detect bedbugs in our box spring but there was no visual sighting. When we called Rich about prep again he said something didn't sound right. He drove all the way from Long Island to Westchester on a Friday afternoon to check it out. He brought cameras to show us the inside of our boxspring and assure us we in fact did not have any bedbugs. Not only did he save us a ton of stress but also a ton of money. First, I need to say I didn't end up using Rich and his team to prep my apt. for treatment. Ironically, because Rich is an honorable and professional person who didn't try to take advantage of me just to make a buck. I found one bug and immediately alerted my building. They had their exterminator come with a dog and he flagged two areas, including where I'd told him I found the bug. Panicked and overwhelmed by the prospect of having to pack up my entire apt., while trying to take care of my kids I called Rich for help getting my place ready. After telling him my story he told me something didn't sound right to him and connected me with his friend Mike H. from K9 Technologies to get a second opinion and to tell him what happened. He agreed it sounded like the exterminator didn't do a thorough job and likely got the dog, either intentionally or by lack of training, to make a false positive read. Still panicked, I had Rich come over for an estimate to do the job and to see it in person. As soon as he walked in, he said, you don't have bedbugs. He looked around and unlike the exterminator looked for evidence supporting more than the one bug I found. There wasn't any! I had Mike do an inspection to confirm and Rich was right, nothing! Rich could have easily played on my fears and concern for my kids and made a lot of money doing the job for me, but he didn't. Instead he worked very hard to convince me not to use his services because I didn't need them. He was also mad on my behalf that the exterminator had tried to take advantage of me and put me and my family through unnecessary cost and stress. Dealing with someone as honest and professional as Rich, especially in NYC, was refreshing. He had no reason to try to help me and deter me from using his service, especially since doing so takes money from his pocket. His morals and being an honorable person and businessman were more important to him. I'm forever grateful for his kindness and professionalism and if I ever do find myself with an actual BB problem, I'd use him and his company without hesitation. read more

Like a few of the other reviews, I didn't hire Rich because he came by and gave me advice to challenge my building management to get visual confirmation of bed bugs before spending thousands of dollars on prep. However, the information he imparted was very valuable and I very much appreciated him spending his time to come by and help me make sure I was making an informed decision. I woke up a few nights with bites which seemed to fit the description of bed bug bites (there were 15 or so bites in total in a zig zag pattern on my arms and the others were on my face). However, neither my husband or a friend of mine that I shared the bed with (my husband was traveling a few nights when my friend was visiting, no funny business there!) got any bites. I informed building management who sent an inspector, and after a 2 min inspection with a dog, the dog sat down on one side of the bed alerting for bugs and received a treat for his alert. Now this already didn't sit well with me as the inspection did not seem very thorough and I have a dog and know she will do ANYTHING for a treat. Rich came by for a bed bug prep quote and indicated that he thought I was potentially being swindled. He explained that the inspector works for the same company as the exterminator so there is a natural bias for the exterminator to find something since buildings like mine don't mess around and are happy to send in an exterminator to eliminate risk of exposing the rest of their building to bed bugs (understandable). The exterminator makes a lot of money performing these exterminations. I subsequently performed some research on dogs and false positives and noted that while they can be accurate 90+% of the time, this does not consider the human factor e.g., the inspector could be alerting the animal etc. Rich asked if the dog was ever let off leash (it wasn't) and if I saw the bugs myself (I did not). As such, armed with this knowledge, I asked for a reinspection to get visual confirmation of bed bugs. Prior to the reinspection, I did go through a thorough process of washing the sheets, putting everything under the bed through high heat in the dryer for 1 hour (you don't need to wash all items because it's the heat that kills, warning: faux leather items do not fare that well in the dryer so recommend you inspect and/or spray those items down with bed bug killer), soaked the bed frame and surrounding area with bed bug killer, and inspected/sprayed items that could not go through the dryer with bed bug killer. I also purchased bed bug proof pillow and mattress covers to encase those items for a minimum of 2 years before removing. After this, the reinspection came up negative and I haven't been bothered since (this was now 4 months ago). So while it is possible I had a bug and eliminated the problem myself, Rich still really helped me out as I would be out at least $2k right now had I just gone ahead and done the prep and let the exterminators come in. Fingers crossed the problem is really gone.... In conclusion, Rich wouldn't accept any payment or even consider taking the job unless I got a second opinion if I really had bed bugs. I'm grateful for his honesty and advice; he could have easily taken my money and done the job but he didn't! Instead he wasted probably at least a few hours of his time driving to me, a few dollars for parking and then the time it took to do the inspection and have a chat. For that, he deserves a 5-star review. read more

I was so extremely lucky to have found Pest Prep nyc to do my prep prior to getting extermination treatment for bed bugs in my apt. Richard Kane, owner, not only gave me a very reasonable price quote but took the time to explain the process AND actually came over to my apt to inspect and give me a very fair and accurate quote for his services. I can't tell you how stressed I was after discovering bed bugs and overwhelmed with prep needed that was a requirement by the extermination company prior to spraying. The extermination company required me to pack up my whole apt and put everything in the closets, shelves, art work, etc. in plastic bags. The Pest Prep team came to my apt and packed everything. They also did a heat treatment before vacuum sealing the bags to ensure that the items in bags were bug free. They were totally professional. During and after the 2 phase spraying process, Richard was always available and informative for any concerns or questions I had. Talk about hand holding... Richard totally backed up his services at all times. The extermination company was not available but Richard was... even when my concerns and questions were based on anxiety and stress of my situation. He did everything to help me which went far beyond his scope of services. He advised me, inspected pictures of bugs I sent him (none were bed bugs), recommended an alternate independent canine inspector who helped me confirm a false indication (the extermination company my bldg used wanted to spray the whole apt again based on their dog indicating at my dresser). My independent inspector did an ACTUAL PHYSICAL inspection AND a canine inspection and confirmed it was a false alert. My exterminator refused a physical inspection when their dog indicated. I really don't think I could have gotten through this process and stayed sane without the expertise and compassionate help of Pest Prep nyc. Richard is a great salesman. They packed up but we found that .when they had unpacked everything was in the wrong place. Files were in places I couldn't reach and most things were in the wrong place. Being bitten by a bedbug - and then having an exterminator tell you there may be more is a horribly traumatic experience. If that happens to you, get in touch with Rich ASAP and you will be SO glad that you did, just as I was. I wanted to hire him to do the prep as there was no way I had time to do it. First, his quote was very reasonable and just as many other reviewers had said, when he came to my apartment he doubted that I really had a problem and encouraged me to get a second opinion, which I did. He wanted to save me all that grief - and he consequently never made a dime if what he said was true - and it was, the second opinion involve a far more thorough and credible inspection and revealed that the bedbug was a one of (which this inspector told me was the case 65% of the time; and he'd done 16,000 inspections!!). Great, and a relief! I recently had bed bugs in my apartment, and needless to say, that was a very stressful and gross time. These guys made it much less stressful. I got a free quote which was simple, straightforward, and was fair and reasonable. We scheduled a date and they sent two detail oriented, professional employees to my apartment to treat and pack up everything for the exterminator to come the next day. 1. Saved me time. They did in one night what would have taken me a whole weekend plus some time to do. 2. Put my mind at ease that someone who KNOWS how to treat belongings for this type of prep was doing it instead of me hoping I did everything right. It was worth every penny for a bit of sanity and peace of mind during a stressful situation. They were great at communicating with me leading up to the visit and I would recommend them to anyone. Lastly, the owner of this business is one of the most honorable, stand-up people I've met as a person and as a business owner. We had a complicated situation and he went above and beyond to make sure we were really clear of the nasty critters and took the time even after we had already got the treatment and paid to give us useful, honest, and direct advice to make sure our apartment says free of them. I'm so happy I met Rich. He could have easily taken the prep job, without saying anything. Instead, he cared enough to listen and prevented me from a costly and unnecessary situation. Background: Someone at my work reported having bed bugs at their apt. When the second person reported having them and I saw some suspicious bites on my arm I called an exterminator to check my place and they found a single bed bug. I called Rich to help prep my apartment before the treatment. He was able to come right away for a consultation. His price was similar to another company I spoke with. During my consultation he started raising an eyebrow at how the exterminator conducted his search (I wasn't in the room) and the "proof" I was shown. Essentially be believe the exterminator company scammed me. He said he would do the prep work if I wanted, but encouraged me to get a second inspection. I called his referral, a company that only does inspections, and they came the next day to check my apt. Sure enough, Rich was right! The inspector found no visual evidence nor the dog any scent evidence. He also dispelled everything that the other inspector showed me (like what was pointed out as excrement marks under a protective cover on closer inspection were just staples). After I got the all clear, the inspector did a demo with his dog to show how the dog would have reacted IF there was anything. I hired this company largely in order to help me feel assured that I was doing everything correctly in order to eliminate my bedbugs, but I have ended up with much more concern that I would have if I'd simply followed the guidelines put out by reputable sources and common sense. I noticed after the workers left that there were a number of bags where clothing which should have been steam-treated were mixed with items which can not be cleaned; thereby potentially contaminating these items; which unfortunately included personally important items such as photographs and books. Some of the clothing was non-washable, so along with possible contamination they also would not be able to be washed and dried later by me; making moot both the efficacy and convenience of using this service. I told the owner and the workers that I leave laundry on my bed for days (increasing, unbeknownst to me, the chance of bedbugs getting into my clean clothes; so it should have been clear that even if clothing was across the room that it had been sitting on my bed for quite awhile (clothing was supposed to be be cleaned in any case). Also, items from areas of my room which were "low-risk" were mixed, in many instances (I've counted at least 8 so far, with a number of bags left to open) with items from under and around my bed, which is the only place that evidence of bedbugs have been found; also with luggage. Now I feel that my whole apartment is of higher risk. Another thing which is a big inconvenience, is the mixing of dirty item with clean clothes from my dresser or cabinets - so far there was a filthy floor mat mixed with a number of clean cotton bathmats , and dirty floor pillows mixed with clean corduroy pants -- the rewashing and drying thick items of these took a lot of time and quarters! Some more things: I specifically asked for a beach bag that I used when taking trips this summer with a friend who has recently had bedbugs to be cleaned; this was agreed to but not done- instead it was packed with other items. A foldable wooden table with many crevices, which should have been left out for the exterminator, was packed up where I could not find it - yes, with untreatable items. I could go on... What they did do well was getting things packed up -- I never could have done that part on my own. I have a very small apartment with , luckily, an outdoor space, which they used by packing things very thoroughly in plastic --although there was some condensation in a few bags it so far does not seem to have harmed the items. They made a giant plastic-bag structure, which was really quite a feat! Some bags were not inside it; I have not opened them yet so hope they kept out the rain. So far the main casualty is melted cassette tapes which should not have been in direct line of the sun... I contacted the owner about the above complaints; after some back & forth he offered to send a technician back before my second spraying, which was fine. He said he would contact me in a few days; unfortunately I have contacted him twice since them but have not heard back. What???!!!! read more

He will help you evaluate the extermination, provide product and vendor recommendation, and stay available to you until your infestation is gone. He helped us provide documentation and resources for the home health aides who brought the infestation in, so that reinfestation would be minimized. Considering the high touch, high value service he provides, I thought his fee was very reasonable and probably less than other vendors. On the "needs improvement" side, this is a small company that gets a lot of work because of their excellence, so sometimes he is not as available as is ideal. If your question or issue is not time sensitive, he may take a day or two to respond to you. But in my experience, he knows when a situation can't wait and manages his time accordingly. Rich saved me the extreme ordeal of having a treatment I conclusively did not need. If you have been told you have bugs, or think you might, I strongly recommend calling Rich before making any decisions about extermination processes. As a couple of the reviews here state, Rich will never encourage you to use his service if it is not necessary. He provided me with an independent inspector, who showed me, not once but twice, that I certainly had no bugs present in my home. The in house extermination company insisted I did- when I conclusively did not. Obviously a potential conflict of interest exists when a company will both inspect and treat bed bugs! Again, that's why Rich'a insistence that I have an independent inspection was so valuable. Thousands of dollars saved but really- packing up my entire apartment and living out of bags for two months! Potential damage to furniture I mean what they saved me from I cannot express enough thanks. There's barely any way for me to express how patient and helpful both Rich and Mike of K9 technologies are- they took my stressed out calls at all times and relentlessly provided more and more information. and they have the resume to prove it. Rich's team was very professional and got the job done quick! I recently had bed bugs in my apartment and I honestly thought it was the worst thing that could happen to me. I was very stressed and upset and Rich made my experience the best it could have been. He was one of the only companies that picked up EVERY time I called and was at my apartment when we said he would be. He did a visual inspection and was able to get his guys over the next day to pack up my apartment. They came over, heated everything, and best of all made me feel better about the whole situation. What would have taken me a week to do they did in a couple of hours! If you are here, you are probably stressed and hurting. But you are lucky you found Rich! I wish I got to know him from the beginning of my ordeal. And I wish I could post message for anyone and everyone who are dealing with bb : talk to Rich before you do anything !! Talk to Rich! One Sunday morning while making my bed I saw strange black bug running very fast and making it to iron comer of springboard. I checked everything. I have Snow White bedding and mattress Nothing. I am minimalist and my apartment is extremely sparse. No bites. But I panicked. I panicked good. I was in despair and not thinking straight. Also it was Sunday with almost all business closed. Unfortunately for me one was open. They hold my credit card and made appointment non refundable. The guy came next day for dog inspection he made sure he was not logged in at front desk. It took 1 min. Dog jumped on the bed and barked. Dog jumped on the couch and barked. They told me I had bb. No physical evidence. I guess I still was in panic I gave cash check to them for thousands $$ to eradicate problem. It took them 30 min with no prep to do freeze and sprinkle some chemical. Literally 2 min for chemicals. Few days after I cooled down and I started to think clearly and then I saw so many red flags. I was in bigger panic than before. As I had no confidence my problem was resolved but money was gone ... I still saw nothing on activity but all of you know that your mind will play tricks on you in such situation. So I decided to cut my losses and do proper treatment and proper prep. And I contacted Rich! He spent so much time with me on the phone explaining everything. It was first time someone actually cared about my problem. He came in for estimate next morning !! He listened to my story. He looked though my apartment. He had his doubts. He said he is not going to do anything until I get real inspection as he suspected I was given false positive. He refused to take money until we know for sure. I cried. He recommended company for inspection. And after 2 thorough inspections - they went through every single stitch on bedding and couches it took 1 hour for 1 bed room. Guess what ? Nothing !! I opened the bags they prepped for me approximately 30 days after my initial treatment to make sure there is no more bed bugs and I am not getting bit. It wasn't done on the same day. It took me several days to unpack everything. 2. The second day after I opened the bags, I was getting bit. Is it just a coincidence?? 3. Richard claimed I didn't see any bugs in the bag when I unpack. If they were live bugs, do you think they would sit on bag and wait for me kill them? If they were hiding in my belongs, I wouldn't know because I didn't inspect every single items. In addition, I thought they made sure there were no bugs before they bagged my belongings, so why would I inspect them again?? 4. The 'proprietary heat treatment' Richard was referring was simply using a steamer to steam your belongings in a plastic bag. Not the type of heat treatment I thought it was for sure! ******************************************* I'd like to share my experience after having this company doing the prep work for me. Like many people, I am battling with bed bug problems and it's very very stressful! I hired them so I could make sure the bed bug treatment could go smoothly and eliminate the chances of errors if I prepped myself. They put a lot of fancy terms on their website in terms of how they will help you prep for the extermination. However the reality is they simply bagged everything for you and moved it to the center of your house. Granted, a lot of work if you have a lot of stuff or a huge house. However, $1500+ for 600 sq ft for bagging your belongings. That's god damn easy money! Long story short, if that $1500 solved my problems. I have no complaints. However, after the treatments, I slowly unpack the stuff they bagged for me. For a month, I haven't gotten bitten once. As soon as I opened the bags, I am basically eaten alive. I even crashed one while it was having a feast on me in a broad daylight... My point is, you figured they would inspect everything to make sure no bed bugs were in it before they bagged them? No. They do give you a 30 days guarantee if you see a live bed bug after their visit. I guess you'll have to open the bags soon after the 2nd visit from the exterminators or you're out of luck! read more

I called these guys a couple months ago when we were hit with the dreaded BBs for--get this--a third time (they're in the building...). I had done the prep myself the first two in an attempt to save money, but this time I just couldn't face it. Pest Prep NYC came right away and were so so nice. They offered me a great rate that, to be honest, is probably less than I would have spent on laundry and time off had I done the prep myself. I would definitely call them again. Rich came in to my apartment, did a check of the infected area, as well as the rest of the apartment and he was honest about my situation. He gave me a free quote, and gave me great advice on how to handle the situation, which definitely put my mind at ease. I received an estimate on services which was shockingly fair and reasonable compared to what I've read online from other services. We agreed on a date and Rich and his crew showed up on time and did not waste any time sealing and packing up my belongings. Pest Prep NYC is probably the most honest company I've ever dealt with. Four weeks ago today I met Rich. It was a horrible week for my husband and myself. It was discovered we had bed bugs. I called Rich late Friday afternoon, within 3-4 hours he was at our house. I rented a house in the Poconos one weekend and had to return home because the rental was infested with bed bugs. I came home in the middle of the night, covered in bites, to find a bug in my apartment's bed. Traumatized by what transpired in the Poconos I began frantically calling 24-hour services in the City. I accidentally called Rich's company, not knowing Pest Prep specialized in packing, but luckily he picked up at 2:30am. He calmed me down, examined multiple pictures he asked me text him, and talked to me until 4am on a Holiday Weekend, while he was on vacation. Over the course of the next week, he continued to walk me through the inspection process (again, not what is Company does) - advising me of standard/not standard industry practices, signs to look for, questions to ask/not to ask, etc. Luckily I did not have bed bugs at home! Rich could have taken advantage of my panicked and crazed state, telling me that night and in the days to come that the pictures I sent him were bed bugs and that I needed to employ his services immediately, given that his Company would only be necessary if I did have an infestation in my own home. Rather than do that, he took time out of his night, vacation, and week (and essentially took money out of his pocket) to help a complete stranger. During my week long ordeal, I asked Rich if I could pay him for his psychological and professional services. He simply replied, "just pay it forward - the world needs more good people." Specifically, the world needs more good people like Rich. If his Company is one quarter as good at their specialty as he is at being a thoughtful and caring human, you will be in great hands. My family was shocked when we found out we had bed bugs. My wife and children were completely freaked out, So we called Pest Prep. The owner came by to evaluate our situation and was very informative, and calmed us down. Rich's team was very professional and got the job done quick! I recently had bed bugs in my apartment and I honestly thought it was the worst thing that could happen to me. I was very stressed and upset and Rich made my experience the best it could have been. He was one of the only companies that picked up EVERY time I called and was at my apartment when we said he would be. He did a visual inspection and was able to get his guys over the next day to pack up my apartment. They came over, heated everything, and best of all made me feel better about the whole situation. What would have taken me a week to do they did in a couple of hours! Rich also was nice enough to come to my place a second time-- right before our second fumigation-- to reheat the clothing we used over the two week time period. This is not something he charged me for and not something they usually do but he did it because I told him it would make me feel better. After months of dealing with a bed bug infestation and postponing my scheduled treatment several times due to difficulty with the "prepping" part of it all, I found these guys just when I was about to give up and throw away 30 years worth of family history. They not only came right away but also befriended my elderly father (who refuses to throw anything away and actually loves clutter) and made him feel comfortable with having people he just met clean of all his belongings! They treated everything like gold and made us feel at ease throughout the entire process. Even though the power went out 2 or 3 times (very old building) they never skipped a beat and even offered to help us get the power back on. Lastly, several times throughout the prepping, they found money, valuable and sentimental items. Upon each discovery, they notified me and let me know where everything was being stored after cleaning. I kept in touch with them throughout my entire treatment process and they were happy to answer any questions I had.
