John is great. He really does want to help people out and is not exterminating just for money. He spent hours talking to my room mate about bed bugs and he was not even exterminating for us at that point. There was a review by Nan D that mentioned that John does not have a website and mislead her that he did. Its true he does not have a website, but he never said to us that he has a website. John was very clear that there is no website available yet. John's prep instructions are very very VERY easy to follow. I read a review saying it's not clear...that's not true. Any questions the client had about the instructions, we could easily call him and he would answer them. He usually picks up the phone. If he does not....we get a call back at least within 24 hours or less. We did hire him 3 years ago and since we hire him we have no problems. He even came out today to do an inspection because we have this post bedbug syndrome, thinking every bite is a begbug. However...nope....no bugs. He was very kind to come out. read more

A few months ago, we were going through a bed bug problem and have been referred to John for help. I can definitely say that John and Bobby have been a great throughout the process (initial discussion to follow-up treatment) and have solved not only a very persistent bug problem but being very kind and helpful in walking us through such as what to expect, what to do, etc. Naturally, we would check the web for information but sometimes this can cause paranoia (like in our case) with info overload. John was communicative, on time (like on the dot) ready to work, he was very nice and accommodating, and gave us clear instructions. I wish people were more open about telling other's when they have bedbugs because the first thing I would say to them is "Call Boot A Pest!" They are seriously worth the money. Getting rid of bed bugs isn't going to be cheap, so you might as well do it right on the first try. Back in the day when we had bed bugs John was nothing but helpful, responding to my emails (even if they were asking the most ridiculous questions) in a timely and informative matter. We found a bug on Thursday night and they were here Saturday morning to treat the apartment. Amazing. What could have been a nightmare was as easy as I can imagine it gets. We followed all of his instructions (may have gone little overkill on a few of them) and within the two treatments the bugs were gone. I've heard stories of people dealing with these pests for months, because of Boot a Pest our issue was gone in about 30 days (and noticeably gone after the first treatment.) We had two dogs from two different companies give positive indications at two houses (a brownstone in the city and a large country house). We were distraught. There are priceless artworks and antiques in both houses that would need to be removed and treated separately and the families would have to be moved out while the massive treatment regimens were implemented. The whole thing was going to be a nightmare. Then, on the recommendation of a friend who had gone through the whole bedbug thing herself and had come to rely on John's advice (she was in LA so could not hire him directly), I called in Boot-A Pest. They sent over one guy who actually took the time to look for bugs and upon finding none at either house, gave us a clean bill of health. I don't write a ton of Yelp reviews, but doing one for Boot-a-Pest feels really worth it. I'll keep this really simple; 1) John is the expert. Period. In circles of people who know such things (look around the numerous bedbug communities onlines) John is very highly regarded. Not only do these guys kill bed bugs, they RESEARCH them too. A lot of what we even know about bed bug behavior, and how to effectively kill them is due to people like John and Boot-a-Pest doing the hard work they do. 2) These guys have integrity, and loads of it. What I thought to be a bed bug infestation turned out to be what they called 'head bugs.' The psychological impact of an infestation had me ready to believe anything when I had my screening. They could have sold me $4,000 worth of services and I probably would have believed them, but they didn't. They honestly told me I had no infestation, and even taught me how to look for an infestation myself to save having to call them again. 3) Do your research. I would give John 5 stars, but I can't speak for his treatment or billing practices, just his level of knowledge and customer service, which are top notch. I called him when I was concerned some bites that appeared after visiting a friend's house were bed bug bites. He talked me down from a ledge and told me in all likelihood they were not and he was right. (It turns out, my "bites" were allergic reactions to carpet beetle hairs - something worth googling before rushing to throw out bed frames, mattresses, etc.) Even though he knew my friend was already working with another exterminator, who were not nearly as nice or knowledgeable, John still took the time to explain to me why in all probability they weren't bed bugs and things I should look out for. Given the psychological toll bug infestations can take on a person, it's great to talk to someone who A. takes you seriously, B. is intelligent on the subject, and C. is honest. John is so legit it hurts. the dude is THE bedbug expert. in his spare time he's even responding to questions on bedbug forums online. he's that dedicated. he cares about his customers, and understands the psychological impacts of bedbug infestations and is SO empathetic in his approach. i cannot recommend him enough. do not get a dog to sniff out your place; they're scammers (the companies, not the dogs). get john in there. he'll tell you if you have anything to worry about. and if you do, he'll take care of it -- ONCE. because that's how good he is. the guy only needs to do it once. read more

My roommate and I thought we found a bed bug in her bed. The next morning we texted John at Boot A Pest, recommended to her by a coworker. He told us to send him a picture of the bug, which we had stored in a ziploc bag in the fridge. He was immediately able to tell it was a spider beetle, not a bed bug (they look very similar). What a relief!! We could not have been more grateful, but John did not charge us. I can't say enough good things about this company and the team. My wife and I travel quite a bit, stay in hotels around the world and unfortunately, bed bugs are a fact of life. I react quickly to bug bites as does one of our children - creating anxiety and panic. Bobby and John have been helpful, patient and have been right every time - usually that we do not have a problem. They are honest, capable and effective. I have referred them to many people including my own family and they have been completely satisfied. I heard about John Furman and Boot-A-Pest from a very popular bed bug website/community where so many members had such positive things to say about John's thorough inspections and success getting rid of bed bugs. My first interaction with him came last year (July 2010), when I got some suspicious bites. This troubled me, because I had experienced a bed bug issue back in 2008 after a move and refused to hire a dog because of a false reading I had gotten back then. I spoke to John, sent him photos of the "evidence" I had found, mailed him bug samples, and he pretty much assured me over the phone that I had no issue. In fact, he told me to save my money and not have him come out. But, being the scared person I was, I begged him to come and do an inspection. John went out of his way to come to my apartment--which is very out of the way for him-- to give me that extra peace of mind of an inspection. When he arrived, he went into work mode and literally began looking around as soon as I opened the door. He was very thorough, looking in every nook and cranny in the bedroom. He found nothing, and to this day, there are no bed bugs. What I like the most about John is his compassion and care for his clients. As a self-proclaimed bed bug phobic, my calls and emails can be numerous and even annoying (actually very annoying) when I feel something is amiss. But John always calls me back, listens to my concerns and gives me an honest assessment of what's going on. He's a genuinely good, honest guy who happens to exterminate and is pretty freakin' good at it. I simply wouldn't want to work with another pest control company for bed bugs. I had a bb scare and after a LOT of research discovered that John was the best guy in the city. I called him and he was kind enough to spend 10 mins on the phone asking me questions and telling me that I should wait a week, see what happens and call him back again if I was still getting bit in a week. So a week later I called him and scheduled him to come over for a visual inspection. He came and did an incredibly thorough job and gave me an all clear. He allowed me to sleep comfortably in my apt for the first time in a month. He's not cheap, but I learned that you apparently can put a price on sanity and a good nights sleep and it was the best money I spent. read more

Although we believe John and his company probably did the job properly (we got the all clear after doing everything he told us to, and paying more than $4,000 for the service), I did not like working with him for several reasons: 1) His instructions were not clear (in writing) and he referred us to his website for more information, but the website doesn't exist. 2) He does little to reassure you, making you feel you have to radically alter your lifestyle. Scare the client mode. 3) He was unprofessional and rude, even after we had paid him more than $4,000, when I called with simple follow up questions. My elderly parents found bed bugs in their apartment and tried to self-treat. It was a disaster, but I researched and called John on a Saturday. Bobby came that day to confirm the infestation and returned on Monday to take on the huge job of heating all their things. They came back a few days later for an extremely thorough treatment and two week later for what we think will be the last. I only spoke to John on the phone, mostly dealt with Bobby and his young assistant. They were kind, understanding and thorough. Bobby always answered my worried texts. Communication was stellar and my parents loved them. Ultimately, though, what is important is that the job is done and those suckers are dead. And we are all sleeping and living better. Boot a Pest saved me from financial and emotional ruin. I owe John a lot. Back in 2009 I thought I had bedbugs. As I had already had them once in 2006, I was on high alert and high panic and when I saw signs of a possible return I FREAKED. I called in that company you see on TV (you know the one). They brought their dog, told me I had a bedbug PROBLEM, but told me that 'producing a bug would be nearly impossible' as they hide and are nocturnal, blah blah - BUT that they were certain that I had a serious issue that needed the full treatment right away. Mere days before I handed over basically my life savings to those hacks, I saw John's company in Best of NY - thank GOD I got a 2nd opinion. He came to my apt, and for ONCE gave my mother and I definitive answers. He pointed out all of the bugs he saw in my apt that were all biting bugs. He had logical answers and explanations for the things that an untrained professional may mistake for signs of bedbugs. He searched my apt so thoroughly and said that if there were bugs there, he would find one. There were none. He found nothing. My family has been living in that apt, since that day - there were never bedbugs there. Of all the PCO's that came in, John was the only genuine one I met. That TV company sensed my fear and desperation and almost took me for every dime I've got. John experienced the same desperation, but instead of taking advantage he told me the truth and put me at ease. I spoke with John again this morning, regarding a bug I found in my new apt in Brooklyn. I received the same care and concern and attention I did 2 years ago. All is well, by the way - no bedbugs here :) Anyone out there afflicted by this plague - make John your first call. My roommates and I have been working with John for the past month or so, and we have had the best experience possible (we were dealing with bed bugs, so how good can the experience really be) during the whole process. I wanted to write a review for him as soon as I had my first conversation with him, but I decided I should wait until the process had gone full cycle. Our bed bug fiasco began when one of the roommates discovered new bug bites after waking up each morning for a few days in a row. We did the research and we definitely believed that they were bed bug bites. We contacted a local exterminator in Chinatown and scheduled an inspection. They came with their dog who "pointed" at specific locations in each bedroom -- including my room and our other roommie's, though neither of us had seen/felt any evidence. The handler did not thoroughly inspect the area where the dog pointed, but simply took that as proof. This being said -- pest management professionals will tell you that if you are being bitten/have seen a live bug, you need to have a treatment. But, with the dog pointing in each bedroom, i believe we received a false positive and caused it to seem like a much bigger problem than it probably was. After a few back a forth conversations with our landlord, and initially trying to schedule a treatment with this original exterminator, we got our way and were able to book with John. The other company sent us a contract that we must sign in order to schedule the treatment. This contract's FIRST point pretty much said that "if you can, you may as well just get rid of all of your furniture". They also were requesting that any rugs be professionally cleaned and stored until after the treatments were over, as well as wrapping any sofas in plastic wrap for at least 45 days. By the time we finished reading the contract, we knew we would not be able to afford all of the things they wanted us to do. And honestly it just seemed as though they wanted to have this long list, which they know no one can really do, so that when their treatment is ineffective, they can say it's your fault. Anyway, we called John and he came with Bobby to do a prelim inspection and quote for treatment. We were able to schedule the first treatment for the following week. John and Bobby showed up early and were ready to follow through with their "Urban Hunting" as they call it. We were instructed to call back in 10 days to schedule the second treatment, which they came for this past week. We have been seemingly bug free with no symptoms or evidence since the first treatment, and are confident that John has solved our problem. John is the only Urban Hunter you will need! Not only does he qualm any fears but he has a sense of humor and will make you feel totally comfortable and taken care of. Last year, I was living with 4 roommates and had the unfortunate incident of bed bugs being brought to our apartment from a hotel after a trip. We heard about John through New York magazine and a friend's recommendation. He showed up on time and inspected the entire apartment and sure enough, found traces of their "droppings." His method and knowledge is nothing if not impeccable. After living out of bags for about 6 weeks, John gave me the high sign that everything should be fine, I never saw them again in that apartment. Two months ago, my girlfriend and I moved into our first apartment together. When a few bites showed up on my leg and my girlfriend's back, we started to freak out. We stripped the mattress, wrapped it up twice, dried everything thoroughly on high heat, etc, but still got a couple bites. We called John immediately. He and his associate, Bobby, came over and inspected the bed, the furniture around the bed, the living room, every room in the apartment and found nothing. I went to Boot A Pest because I wanted the best in the business. It was definitely the right move. First, I will admit, I suffer from bedbug paranoia. So when my wife woke up with clusters of bites one morning (the second straight day she noticed bites), I started to panic. I wanted to know whether we had a bedbug problem or not, and I wanted to be confident in the assessment I got. I did my research, and all signs pointed to Boot A Pest (repeatedly NY Magazine's #1 bedbug hunter, tons of people raving about them online, etc.) John got back to me right away and set up an appointment for the next day. He and his associate were right on time, and they searched diligently, explaining every step. No, we did not have bedbugs. But John didn't just deliver the good news, get paid, and leave; he explained his methods, the grounds for his conclusion, and the reasons we could have confidence in his findings. That weekend, my wife and I took a trip out of town. We left on the ClimbUp Interceptors that I bought the night before John's visit and installed on the bed. When I got back, I saw the last thing I wanted to see -- a dead bug in one of the interceptors. I was sure it was a bedbug. It was a nightmare. John must have been wrong, I thought, we do have bedbugs, he just couldn't find them. I called John (on a Sunday) and left a frantic message. Please call ASAP. John got back to me right away, and asked me to send him a picture. Fine, I thought, I'll show him the undeniable evidence and maybe he'll come over sooner. I took a picture and John got back to me right away -- not a bedbug. A stinkbug or similar garden pest. I was incredulous. Maybe he just doesn't want to be bothered on a weekend, I thought. I did a Google image search, and I had to admit the bug I found looked at least as much like that as it did a bedbug. Then it occurred to me that this bug was considerably larger than the size of an adult bedbug. And wait a minute, it appears to have wings. And the head looks different. Could John be right? I told John I was going to send the dead bug to a lab for confirmation. OK, John said, but "I'm 100% sure." I finally started to calm down and I realized John was right. Later that night, I saw a live version of this insect crawling on the screen outside the door from my bedroom to the porch. It was the same bug, and very obviously not a bedbug. Well, for good measure, I went to a lab for confirmation. John was right on the money. The bottom line: if you want the best, Boot A Pest is definitely the way to go. On a final note, having just read the couple of negative reviews here, I will say this: thinking you have bedbugs is extremely stressful. Knowing you have them must be much, much worse. From reading those reviews it is obvious they were written by people under a lot of stress. Some of the comments border on bizarre. Honestly, I wouldn't give them a second thought. If anyone I know ever had a bedbug scare or an actual bedbug problem, I would send them to Boot A Pest in a heartbeat. read more

I cannot recommend John at boot a pest more strongly. We have a 2 story row house in Brooklyn and the top apartment got an infestation. 1) John was the only of several companies to respond over the weekend promptly. He spent about half an hour/45 minutes speaking to us that evening, both to calm us and to give us information. 2) He set up an inspection within 24 hours. 3) Bobby, an inspector he works with, identified a few bugs we found in our apartment as non-bed bugs--he wasn't taking us for a ride and did not try to push us into treating the entire building. He also spent a great deal of time talking with us to calm anxiety, and to explain things with us. He ended up doing prep on our apartment when we found a bug (a week later -- apartment upstairs had improperly disposed of their mattress leading to the spread) and did an extremely thorough job. An extremely warm and personable guy. 4) He provides extremely detailed pre- and post-treatment instructions, answered questions throughout the process, and scheduled the treatment as soon as possible once the apartment we prepared. 5) He showed up promptly, was extremely professional, explained everything he did and what he found, and provided a detailed list of the products he used and where he used them--including EPA regulation numbers. Everything is above the board and transparent. 6) He has continued to answer questions afterward. 7) He does his own research to determine which products are effective in which situations. Since he specializes in bed bugs, rather than working on all pests, he has a targeted approach rather than a blanket approach. Since bed bugs have grown resistant to a number of products over the past years, this is essential. I'd like to add that John and Bobby both work on very large buildings and we were a very small job for them. That said, neither of them made us feel like we were a waste of his time or were second in line behind higher paying jobs. John and his team recently treated my apartment for bedbugs. I had zero bites after the first treatment, and now two weeks after the 2nd treatment I am finally about to resume normal life. There aren't many yelp reviews for these guys but if you go to bedbugger.com and search for 'killer queen' you will find many positive reviews for John. Don't waste your time or your $$ with another company and their insane treatment prep. John has a 9-piece drumset with about 17 cymbals because he "needs a challenge" - apparently bed bugs are a piece of cake for him, and it shows. read more

Didn't know about John @ the time. I called Boot-A-Pest because I continued to question the new age question--are they really gone....? I scheduled an appointment for an inspection with a rep, though I understand that John often answers the phone. An associate made the inspection and although I requested that John take the job the company rep called ahead of time to informing me that due to an emergency John would be unable to keep this scheduled however John's associate (only associate I believe) is available if you agree. By evening, they'd turned into scabs and I began researching companies to hire for an evaluation. After much research, I stumbled across John at Boot A Pest. It was Sunday evening at 9pm. Having had beg bugs in a previous apartment (unsuccessful...had to move), I am the FIRST to admit that I am incredibly sensitive on the topic of bed bugs. I had John come to my current apartment when I first moved in three years ago... I was hysterical...he was exceptional. Thorough doesn't even begin to describe the job he did inspecting my apartment. He had everything picked up, tipped over, and upside down looking for bugs...all the while pulling me off the ledge... I ended up being fine and his sign off stayed with me for the last three years. Recently I had, what I'd call a "BB-Mental Relapse" based on bite-like marks alone. Bear in mind most PCOs will ask you to have proof of a bug before they'll see you. John returned my call quickly AND allowed me to jabber on about my concerns...without any sort of proof. He had his partner at my door by 5pm. My experience with Bobby was exactly what I had with John...pleasant (he didn't enable my fears nor did he make me feel stupid...he kept it VERY light which was exactly what I needed!). He and his son (also Bobby) took my apartment apart looking for ACTUAL bed bug proof... they even took my constant hovering as an educational opportunity to teach me signs to screen for on my own...where to look...what to look for...and what to rule out. They walked away giving me the ok and I walked away feeling like money was well spent. **As for the cost... having spent over $10,000 prior with an UNSUCCESSFUL result (and overall crappy job) I would give John and his team my right arm to have them fix this type of problem. There is a time and place to be financially conservative...bed bug extermination is not one of them... I will continue to recommend this company although I hope to never need them. :) read more

Even though having bed bugs was the worst, Bobby and John were the best. They were both so quick to respond and available at all times regarding our issue. They were patient in all of their explanations to my grandmother and so respectful and calming throughout the process. We had done our research and many companies were shadily willing to spray once and take our money instead of understanding the multidisciplinary science of eliminating the pests for good. Their teams were so respectful and that is important when you are in such a vulnerable position, trusting strangers to be in your home alone. As much as we hope this issue never happens again, working with and trusting this team again would certainly be a highlight. read more

These guys are the best. I know so many people that have been scammed by bed bug specialists for tens of thousands of dollars. John walked into my house and could have done the same but he systematically checked everything and told me i had no bed bugs. Let me start off by saying that because of John's incompetence, after a month of correspondence I am still without a solution to my problem based on his complete unwillingness to help me. Unfortunately, I have to say that I have been severely under-impressed with John's customer service. I had been personally recommended to him by a friend of mine, and while I hope he accurately takes care of the problem, getting him to treat my apartment has been almost impossible, simply put... "a nightmare." I agree with Nan D. (below). He is difficult to work with for several reasons: 1.) He is not upfront about billing, scheduling, total cost, or payment arrangements. 2.) Twice I attempted to schedule with him only to be canceled upon at the last minute due to seemingly minute details that could have been easily avoided by better communication. 3.) He is not trusting and not flexible but rather skeptical of his customers (leading me to believe he's been in legal trouble previously). He is unwilling to speak to Landlords on behalf of a tenant to effectively communicate his services, even when followed up with thoroughly with regard to his specific instructions. He is unable and unwilling to address answers to seemingly simple questions about his service. 4.) He is not thorough with regard to prep for the job. After sending me a prep sheet, and telling me to speak with my landlord about the treatment, I followed up with him directly and was told that he forgot about our first appointment, Then after I RE-scheduled our appointment, he called me the day before the treatment on The Fourth of July and told me he needed $2,000 dollars from me upfront the next day or he wouldn't even consider doing the job. Surprised and panicked, I immediately put him in touch with my Landlord to work out the payment. When she asked him to detail specifics regarding his treatments, he abruptly canceled our appointment, refused to work with me, and said he would only work with my Landlord directly if she recontacted him. It's now been 3 weeks and my roommates and I have been bitten nearly every night in our apartment so, I made sure to put her in touch with John directly AGAIN immediately. He promised to send her a fax regarding details about his services and prices, so that she could assess them for herself since he was acting in a skeptical manner. Upon the third day of my Landlord not receiving the fax, I re-contacted John directly who informed me that "He should have faxed her but didn't, didn't care, and didn't want to do the job." When you're paying someone upwards of $2500 to exterminate your apartment, you expect them to able to talk about their services in a non offensive manner, remember the appointments they schedule, and be upfront about payment. John was non of these things, and unfortunately we still have a problem and he still will not help. read more

John gave my bedroom an incredibly thorough search for bed bugs and thankfully found nothing. If he had found something, however, I was convinced during the search that I was in the right hands- John's knowledge of bed bugs is incredible, and his meticulous work habits are exactly what is needed in this type of situation. He was super friendly and completely calmed my state of panic as soon as he arrived. If you find or suspect that you have Bedbugs, do yourself a huge favor and call John Furman and Boot a Pest...we wish we had found him sooner!!! We will never know where they came from but we got them...the BBs were in my house. They had made their way to my bedrooms and den. Before finding John and Boot a Pest, I called another company. They came to inspect and insisted that the bugs were only in one bedroom. They said we should hold off on treating the entire house, just concentrate on the one bedroom. Going against my better judgment and instinct, we took their advice. We were told we had to totally tear apart the room, remove every item of clothing, electronics, jewelry, shoe, etc... Upon arrival for treatment, they seemed almost afraid to come in, stating that BB removal was the most dreaded deed they had to do. They treated the room, said they would be back in two weeks for a follow up. The next morning, more bites...they failed (what a waste of money and time...no second chances we were going in another direction). Time to do some research and ask around. Quite by accident, (God works in mysterious ways) I went online and found John Furman and Boot a Pest. I called the office on a Saturday and spoke with John's wife. She was amazing. We spoke for a while and I told her our story, she was attentive, compassionate and very helpful. She said John would call me that day and within an hour John and I were talking. I told him about the other company coming and where I thought we were infested. He said he would be passing my town the next morning (Sunday morning...what a guy) and could stop by. He told us, he didn't do single rooms, it would have to be the entire house, exactly what I wanted to do in the first place - good omen. He met with my husband on Sunday morning and it was an instant click. My husband called me and said, "This is the guy, he is going to help us and he said we didn't have to turn our lives upside down and empty out the house." A few days later John and his assistant, Rob came over. They spent the entire day at my house going through every crack and crevice, to call them thorough would be an understatement. My family slept in our beds that same night all woke up bite free. Three weeks later, John and Rob were back for their follow-up inspection and treatment and gave us the all OK. It's been 7 weeks since John's follow-up visit (10 weeks total since beginning treatment) and we are very happy with the results. I've only had a few emotional breakdowns since John's last visit (and if you've had BB in your house, you'll know what I am talking about) but then I call John and he is more than willing to listen, talk and answer any questions I have. Thanks John for your knowledge, honestly, sincerity and all around old fashion customer service...they don't make them like you anymore. read more

There is no one out there like John of Boot A Pest. He is SIMPLY the BEST. The equivalent of a SAINT. 2 1/2 years ago, My apartment was infested with bedbugs. It was a low level infestation, which made things even trickier! I called John and he spent well over 1/2 an hour on the phone with me (it wouldn't be the last time either!). He explained what I would need to do, and how to approach my building's management. He was only ever helpful and at no point did he pressure me to hire him for an inspection. His advice was absolutely free, out of the goodness of his heart. John is first and foremost concerned with PEOPLE. He is part exterminator, part shrink! After much research, I hired John to exterminate. His prep instructions were clear, and he answered all of my questions. He understands that homes are LIVED in, and he explained that while we must prep throughly, it was unrealistic to turn our lives upside down. MOST IMPORTANTLY, JOHN GOT RID OF OUR BEDBUGS! After reading so many horror stories, I thought we would never be free of them. 2 1/2 years later, I contacted John again. I had a few questions and he remembered me right away. He has been more than patient in answering all my questions. He called and emailed me back immediately! He is so gracious that i feel Im taking advantage of the poor guy! John is simply the best. I found him in New York Magazine's best of issue. We called him on a Saturday and he came straight to our home after he finished a job. He spent an hour (at no charge) looking around our house, confirming that we still had a problem--even after three treatments from a less-than-great pest control company. He costs a bit more than the 20 minute spray guys but he's worth every penny. During the first treatment he literally spent 8 hours going over every inch of our home. He answered every phone call and email. He truly cares and is an expert in getting rid of these insidious little creatures. read more
