Jeff was very thorough. After Arnie the Doggy declared my home bug free, I was skeptical due to the numerous bites over several weeks. So Jeff had me hold Arnie's leash while he manually inspected every surface, crevice, nook and cranny of my mattress and bed frame. After that, I felt quite assured that his diagnosis was accurate. BUT IT WASNT!!!! A few nights later I woke up scratching, jumped up, turned on the light and caught a tiny bug scurrying for cover. I photographed it and sent it to someone else who confirmed it was indeed a bed bug. I wasted a large sum of money for an inaccurate test. This company knows their bedbugs! They are fast in responding, professional, honest, friendly, extremely knowledgable, and most important, very thorough. My roommate found bedbugs in her room and we called this company right away to figure out if the bugs were anywhere else in the apartment. Diana and Sherlock arrived fast and inspected every inch of the place. They found bugs in two rooms. We had a lot of questions about what the next steps were and Diana walked us through everything we needed to do in order to get the situation under control. She was so patient and knowledgable! I was afraid of a bedbug problem in my boyfriend's apartment, so I went on the NESDCA website to find a certified dog with a company that had no conflict of interest- and came upon Diana and Sherlock. The company was super responsive, very professional, and friendly. Also, Sherlock is a bedbug-finding Robot!! They performed 2 inspections (one with me outside the apartment and one with me inside) and watching them work was amazing. I know Sherlock is a dog, but this was the most professional dog I had ever seen- he was all about the work. Diana handled this dog so well and was super specific, I feel that this inspection was true and top notch. Thank goodness that nothing was found, and I can rest assured that the results are accurate. After I bought a NEW linen set that turned out to have a live bedbug in it, I understandably wanted to make a pre-emptive strike. Diana and her dog, Sherlock, arrived within an hour of my call and searched every nook and cranny to give me the peace of mind I needed. They were both incredibly respectful and calming as I cowered in the corner, awaiting a tell-tale bark. (Diana listened and confirmed that some large NYC linen companies do often close down for nights to handle bed bugs, so be careful...) I called Discrete BedBug Inspections after I woke up to a suckling mother f-er on my décolletage. I squished it, turned the light on, saw rusted looking blood on my hands and knew exactly what it was. *Cringe* Though I knew intellectually I obviously had some sort of bedbug issue, I was in denial and wanted to get "scientific" confirmation via a cute beagle. I scheduled an appt for the next day and Arnie the dog "found his gift" at the foot of my bed as Jeff, the owner instructs him to. It seemed as though the bugs were localized only to my bed. That day my one brave girlfriend and I wrapped the contaminated sleeper/sofa up and got it out of there!!! As we were prepping for the exterminators (an endless arduous task of removing and heat drying every piece of clothing you own) she asked if the dog had checked my closets. I realized he hadn't as they were at the opposite end of where the bed was located. I called Jeff and he offered to come back free of charge. He came back the next day and not only checked my closets but the rest of my studio as well. Good news! Arnie had no more gifts from me! I was lucky to have it localized to my bed. Jeff was kind enough to come back free of charge which is definitely above and beyond. He was prompt and they are definitely "discrete" which is something you want since you automatically feel a HUGE sense of shame having these buggers. In case you were wondering it totaled $217 for my studio. He doesn't take credit cards at the moment but took a personal check instead. Monday morning we found what seemed to be a bed bug. I began to panic. I found Discreet BedBug Inspections on Yelp and gave them a call at 7:30am. Thankfully, Jeff picked up and scheduled for Diana and Sherlock (the dog) to stop by that day. When they arrived, Sherlock barked at our suitcase and a strip test of fecal material found on the headboard by eagle-eyed Diana confirmed we had bed bugs. Diana was patient and professional which helped counterbalance my panic-striken state of mind. The next day (still panic-striken) I asked Jeff to stop by again to make sure the bugs had not traveled to any of the other rooms since we decided to go with a heat remediation treatment to get rid of the critters (which for the record is rather costly but effective), since they only treat the infected and adjacent rooms. He kindly agreed to stop by with Arnie and eased my anxieties. I'd highly recommend them if you suspect you may have bed bugs. The process is quick and easy and both Diana and Jeff are great. Better to find the bugs sooner rather than later! But remember, they specialize in finding the bugs not exterminating so if it's confirmed you have bed bugs, you'll have to do another search for the type of extermination service (chemical, heat, steam) you'd like to have done. read more

Highly recommended. Tony and Dexter visited our home. On time, very courteous. No issues but totally worth the peace of mind. We used a pest control service before but always worried they were incentived to find something as they make their money on the treatment. Discreet BB is not affiliated with any service so they have no incentive to find issues. Tony took the time to explain the process. Always make sure the service does a visual inspection if they dog finds a hit (which Discreet does). Also, Tony had no issues with us following them around the house. The other service asked us not too. Now, I am wondering if that is so they can "detect" issues without us witnessing it? Its pretty amazing to watch as the dog can detect the smell several feet away or more. read more

We bought a brand-new gorgeous home in Hudson County NJ, lived in it for 1 week and went on our honeymoon to Mexico. Unfortunately, the minute we got back I started getting bites on my lower back. At first my husband insisted that they were allergies but soon changed his tune when he slowly started getting bitten as well. Did some research, quarantined that room and found Discreet Bedbug Inspections who agreed to come out from Manhattan to NJ, where we live. We wanted to confirm/deny our suspicions as well as see if the problem was localized if we had a bedbug problem. My worry was that a professional extermination company with a dog would be incentivized to claim a wider area of infestation in order to get a bigger extermination fee. Jeff and Arnie were prompt and professional. They arrived exactly on time and Arnie quickly sourced the problem in the bedroom we had quarantined. Also, they were generous enough to test our whole home (which is 2500 square feet) at no extra cost. Jeff was really nice in terms of explaining "dos and donts" (don't put down diatomaceous earth because I can't bring Arnie back, do bag everything up and start washing it). I'd recommend Jeff and Arnie any day. They saved us time, energy and MONEY AND helped us locate a very low level infestation before it ruined our brand new home. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT use this company. I love Yelp, so naturally I checked the reviews for this company before deciding to use them. They seemed normal. It wasn't until after my FIRST inspection with them, that I realized that, almost exclusively, the good reviews were for people who were bedbug free. Those who actually had bedbugs, were told they did not. This is my case as well. Tony and Dexter came to my apartment after I had upwards of 20 bug bites in my room in one week. They were lovely and polite, but they found no bedbugs. I killed some other bug that night and assumed that was it. Now, five days later, I have over 50 bug bites, and after sending the pictures of the bugs I found yesterday to M&M Pest ID, I discovered I do have bed bugs. Jeff was supposed to come to my apartment free of charge, but when no one arrived 30 minutes past my appointment time (the time HE had given me yesterday), I called to check. He said he never wrote it in his calendar yesterday and so no one was on his way. He said he, personally, would be here in 45 minutes. So I cleared my schedule, and waited. Two hours later, he finally showed up. He was very pleasant and Arnie, the dog, was amazing, however one thing made me even more upset. After the dog sniffed out the bugs, I was told "If the dog sniffs the bugs, I normally don't check, but I will." WHAT? I officially have bed bugs, and am now getting my apartment treated. So my husband and I decided to get inspected because we are moving soon to our new love nest. We were concerned because I want our new place to be perfect and bugs creep me out. We didn't think much of it except the hubby has been getting a few bites which we thought were mosquitoes. The inspection took about 20 minutes. Here is where things get a little weird. When we hired Discreet, we were expecting the big dog in the photos. Instead, we got a small tiny dog named Dexter that looked like a house pet. The inspector Tony asked a lot of leading questions almost like he was trying to determine if we had bed bugs based on how we answered and not so much as on what the dog would determine. If the dog scratched anywhere then that is where the bed bugs were hiding. The inspector provided a demonstration on how this worked by having the dog find a towel. We thought it was kind of strange that the inspector had this towel, which supposedly smells like bed bugs (!?), that the dog would try to find and if he did that this some how proved the dog worked. So the dog did find the towel and didn't find bed bugs. The odd thing is that the dog kind of scratched on our bed. However, this isn't exactly how it works. Even though the dog "scratched" at the bed, it's not exactly the same as how he "scratched" at the towel. There is a slight difference between scratching at the bed and the towel because the dog looked different?! My husband saw the process and couldn't tell how it was any different. Turns out we do have bed bugs. My husband found the gross thing and we now have a gross pet in a plastic jar that I would rather spare you guys from seeing. We are getting all of our stuff fumigated before we move to the new place because I refuse to live with bed bugs. I think we lucked out. If we relied on this company for an accurate result, then we would've moved into a our new place infested. For a service that cost $330 this was a total rip off. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON DOG INSPECTIONS- using this company was a waste of $330. My roommate and I just moved into a new apartment and were experiencing bed bug problems. We searched our bedrooms and mattresses up and down and could not locate any signs of bedbugs but we were getting several bites a night. After about 4 of living in the apartment we found an actual bed bug. In a panic, and unsure if we would be held responsible we called Discreet Bed Bug Inspections. While Jeff was very professional the inspection was completely bogus and an absolute waste of time and money. Upon arrival I showed Jeff the bed bug we captured. He confirmed it was a bed bug- however my roommate and I already knew this. Rather we were counting on him to reveal the source/location of the bugs. Jeff walked around our apartment a few times with his dog. The dog sniffed at parts of our mattresses and bed frames but I wasn't impressed. I could have brought my own dog in and had him put on the same performance with little to no training. After the inspection Jeff told us the bugs were in my bed frame. I immediately became suspicious- I had purchased and assembled the brand new bed frame 4 days earlier. Then, he told us the bugs were also in my roommates bed frame. Yet, after he left we ripped open her bed frame and found zero traces of bugs. Jeff charged $330 for a 10 minute visit and left us with absolutely no concrete evidence of a bed bug source or any information we hadn't already known before his visit. The next day we informed our management company of the bed bug we found and they arranged for a fumigation in our apartment. After the exterminator fumigated he confirmed that there were no other bed bugs in the apartment- Jeff's inspection was completely bogus!! Do not waste your money! This is the story of how my 5 stars for them dwindled down to 1 star. My roommate who was traveling recently woke up with bites all over her arm and leg. We freaked out and called Discreet based on their many good reviews on yelp. I spoke Jeff who sounded very nice. I'm pretty sure he was on his cell phone based on the 917 area code and the cars honking in the background. We scheduled the inspection for the following day for $300. The inspector showed up in the morning and our worst nightmare was realized. The dog was barking and scratching everywhere. We quickly contacted our landlord and he sent his own exterminator who conducted his own inspection with his flashlight but he couldn't find any physical bedbugs. This was frustrating because the landlord would not pay for any treatment unless they see proof. The landlord did agree to pay for another dog inspection company that we both agreed on. The outcome of this inspection was drastically different. This new company's dog did not traces of anything in the entire apartment so this was very frustrating. During this 3 day mystery, my roommate learned from her doctor that the bites were not bites but some kind of shingles virus related infection. I quickly phoned Discreet and their defense was that their dogs were 97% accurate and not 100%. Additionally, they said they were certified but they were not able to produce any certification documents. The other thing to point out was that the entire inspection took 15 minutes by Discreet whereas the 2nd company took over 45 minutes. This is a lesson learned. Do your research before hiring anyone and certainly do not hire Discreet Bedbug Inspections. read more

I was frantic, because overnight guests were expected. I feared the worst when I got what must have been a mosquito bite. When I called Discreet Bedbug, they were so nice to alter someone's schedule so I could have my inspection immediately. Diana and her good dog Sherlock handled the inspection. Diana was amazingly patient and thorough. She searched with a flashlight, and made sure that all boxes and drawers and fold-out furniture were opened. We flipped the entire mattress. We moved the Queen bed out from wall. We tore the place apart, and Sherlock alerted to nothing. What was reassuring was how Diana knew what she was looking for. She didn't just sit by watching Sherlock. She worked every minute she was in my apartment, looking for signs of bugs, and asking me questions, and educating me about bed bug habits, and what we would see, if I had them. It turned out that she had also searched the common areas of our building in December (she was able to find it in her records). Larger exterminator companies sometimes send Discreet Bedbug to handle inspections if their inspectors are too busy. The day of my inspection, Diana had just inspected (and found bedbugs) in a bank. Clearly Discreet Bedbug Inspections' staff has lots of experience. It added comfort knowing that I was working with people who are well regarded and really know their business. I would not have peace of mind, but for Diana and Sherlock's good thorough work and emphatic declaration that I do not have bedbugs, that they would have found them if I had any. I was in New York recently because my husband was working there and was visiting a friend who had Diana and her dog Sherlock from Discreet Bedbug Inspections search her apartment. We don't have bedbugs in Portland (or at least I don't think so!) but after my friend explained how often department stores, apartments and hotels have them in NYC I was intrigued. Sherlock was a great working dog (apparently they have to go through hundreds of hours of training!) and Diana was very professional and friendly. They did a great job! I'm definitely a fan of these guys. Diana came with a dog appropriately named Sherlock. Diana was very friendly and helpful. Diana answered all my questions, gave me helpful suggestions, and the process seemed very thorough. I had found a bug that looked very similar to a bedbug, but wasn't sure. I had been experiencing itchy marks for a couple of weeks, so I thought I would be worth getting it checked in case there was something. Jeff came by with his colleague and the hero himself, Arnie the dog. They where really professional and Arnie did not find anything.Thank God for that! He sniffed around for a good 20 min, and the men checked the matress and box spring thoroughly. Jeff showed me how Arnie would have reacted, had there been something, by hiding a sample under the matress. Arnie reacted instantly, it was amazing to see. What an extraordinary being, and he was rewarded with treats for his good work! I am so relieved, and happy we decided to do an early check. I was concerned that I had a bedbug problem and called this company for an inspection after finding them on Yelp! I liked that they were highly rated, but I also liked that they only do inspections not extermination, which eliminates the conflict of interest. We scheduled an appointment immediately. Jeff and Arnie the dog arrived right on schedule. Jeff was very patient and answered all my questions before setting Arnie to work. It was a very straightforward, no nonsense process. Arnie found a bedbug on the underside of my mattress, which was confirmed via visual inspection. Jeff emailed a photo of it to an entomologist colleague and got a confirmation back within a few minutes. Jeff provided some suggestions for next steps, and gave me the name of an exterminator after I asked for it (though I ended up going with my building manager's exterminator rather than the one he suggested). This company only performs inspections and does not do extermination. I liked that right away because there is no incentive to give a "false positive" in order to get the extra extermination bucks. Jeff and his colleague Steve, along with Arnie the incredible dog, were absolutely wonderful. When I called to make the appointment they answered every question, including the scared neurotic ones, with patience. They were able to come the following evening. Their approach was methodical and as other reviewers have described, afterward Jeff hid a live sample (in a secured vial) to illustrate how Arnie would react had there been bedbugs. I moved into a new apartment and started getting a rash and bites on my face and neck. First of all, they searched our entire (5 BR) apartment at no extra cost, even though we had only asked for one room to be searched. After every room that Jeff searched with Arnie (the Beagle), Diana followed with the second dog to double check the results found by the first dog. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would need a bedbug inspection, but alas, I moved to NYC and began noticing little bugs around and on my bed. So, like most overly-neurotic people, I assumed I had bed bugs....after 3 days... Jeff came with I believe Arnie :) and spent a good 30 mins sniffing around. Jeff answered my call right away, and was able to come inspect my apartment the same day as I called. He was open about the flexibility of his schedule, and called back when it turned out that his inspection would need to be later than originally scheduled. However, although he charged a rate based on inspecting the entire apartment, I had to ask him and his dog to inspect our closet- a logical place for bugs to hide, given that bed linens are stored there. Once I asked, he was happy to comply, but did not consider checking that closet (much less the other one) on his own. I'd just suggest being thoughtful and aware while the inspection is going on, and advocating for completeness. Otherwise, these folks were good at their job, and at communicating with their customer. read more

I had an appointment this morning scheduled with Diana and Sherlock. Answered the door, on time, to a man whose name I don't remember and a dog named Dexter. No big deal, but a little surprised. Man asked what's been going on, told him that I saw a bug on my bed a few nights before, crushed it and blood came out. We tore the bed apart, saw nothing. I've also been getting a bite every 10 days since June between elbow and wrist and have a horrible reaction. He showed me a vial with live bed bugs in it (they use as a positive control for the dog to find), asked if the bug looked like them. I said no, and it seemed that he was just going through with a perfunctory inspection. He placed the bait in a kitchen cabinet then brought the dog into my bedroom (across the hall) and told him to search. He sniffed around the bed & furniture, but kept pulling toward the kitchen, knowing that the bait and the reward for finding it were in there, and had to be continually redirected to search the room. After searching the room the man brought him into the kitchen to search where he eventually went to the bait cabinet, started scratching and pointing until the man took the bait out and gave him a treat. The man then put the bait in the bathroom cabinet next to our guest room. Then brought the dog into the guest room to search the bed, furniture, etc. Again, the dog pulled toward the bathroom the whole time, and even when he lingered on certain areas, the man just moved him through the room. With the room declared clean, the man brought him to the bathroom to find the bait so that, in his words, the dog could find it, get a reward, stay motivated, and show me the difference when he found something, a change in body language. Maybe too subtle for me to see or maybe a result of finding the bait, but I didn't see it. Overall the whole thing felt like it was a game of find the bait. I said something to this effect and he told me how the dogs cost $15000, are trained only 2 per month. Not relevant... Not that I want bed bugs, but if I'm spending $300 for a 20 minute inspection ($900/hr!!!), I'd like to see that the dog is actually given a chance to do a thorough search. We went back into the first bedroom so that I could write a check, and the man made a comment about how the goverment is using ticks to transmit lyme disease and how bed bugs would be much smarter, but they have an enzyme that breaks down viral load, which is a relief, imagine if your neighbor had AIDS and bed bugs, you could catch it! He asked how old I am, realized we're the same age and said- I only knew about them from "don't let the bed bugs bite," insinuating that they were created in a lab somewhere, if there are two males for a long time one can become female, if eggs are sprayed with poison, the ones that survive and hatch will be immune to that poison. Some useful facts, some major conspiracy theory nonsense. After this, he moved on to how unpasteurized milk has a protein in it that reverses autism and can kill cancer cells. Why is there such a low rate of autism in the Amish community? Combination of raw milk and no vaccines. Something about immune systems. This was surprising to me since I have a PhD in cancer biology. This went on until I asked him point blank are you telling me that vaccines cause autism? Because Andrew Wakefield lost his license to practice medicine, retracted his publications, it conflict of interest hoax. I told him that I study cancer biology for a living and have a PhD in it, he can believe whatever he wants, but the scientific community does not share that belief and he is factually wrong. At this point, HIS body language changed, he took a few steps toward me and said that Wakefield got his license back (false) and other scientists believe him (again, false). So now I am feeling threatened AND think this guy is a total quack and the whole thing is a scam. I asked for the total so I could write the check and get him out of my apt. I called the owner, Jeff, to share my concerns. To provide a semi-scientific service (at $300 for 20 minutes!!!) and have an employee ranting that bed bugs were created in a government lab and vaccines cause autism gives me very little reason to trust any of this and makes me feel like I'm being ripped off. The owner listened to all I said. He agreed with me that it was completely inappropriate, and the employee is authorized to talk facts about bed bugs. He thanked me for sharing my concerns and said he'd talk with the employee about it. Maybe we don't have bed bugs - I hope!! but maybe he never would have found anything? Especially since he also said, based on what you told me, I didn't think you had any, which leaves me wondering how thorough the inspection really was. So, buyer beware. I was recently experiencing itchy welts lately and thought it might be bed bugs. I called Discreet bedbugs inspection and was able to get an appointment the same day. Jeff showed up and explained what he was going to do. When Arnie searched the bed he started scratching at the box spring. Jeff flipped the box spring and to my surprise I had a nasty problem. This was a terrific experience. Jeff, who is very personable as well as professional, came to my rescue within an hour of my call, saving me days of panic, for which I'm so grateful. Arnie the dog was efficient, finding nothing but the sample which had been hidden for him so he could get his treat. Relief!! Jeff also showed me how to recognize bedbug bites, information that was confusing on the Internet. This is a classy company and I'm 100% glad I called. Worth every penny. PS: Arnie is adorable. Update: I panicked again when I got more bites. Once again they came through for me, with another dog and an even longer inspection (taking my platform bed apart, examining the mattress!!), and again nothing. And there was NO CHARGE!! Later while putting the mattress back, I found a couple of very tiny bugs crawling slowly on it, captured one and rushed it down to Jeff, where he ID'd it with Arnie and a magnifier. Jeff sent his dog Blaze with a very nice gentleman handler. They declared my apartment bug free. The demonstration of the dog's accuracy was impressive using the bug in a jar as a target. My only complaint.... and its a big one... is that the handler was less then "discreet" on his arrival. He told my doorman with another resident in earshot that he was coming to do a bed bug inspection in apartment # 21a. This is not the kind of thing you want your neighbors and others to know about. I assumed from the name of the company that this would be kept on the D.L. - so to speak. I did speak to Jeff about it and he assured me he would speak with the dog handler about this. I was happy with the service but I would caution you to remind them to please NOT share the purpose of the visit with anybody. read more

I joined Yelp specifically to write this review and strongly recommend Jeff and his team. I have used other inspection companies that were not as thorough and even failed to detect an infestation. Not so here. I hired Discreet for use in two different apartments. Jeff was easy to work with, polite, and very clear. For the inspections, one time they sent Dexter, once they sent Sherlock, both very well-behaved dogs. Both times the inspectors were prompt, thorough, courteous and informative. The results came up negative, and one inspector actually used a sealed vial with a live sample to demonstrate with a positive alert would have looked like, in order to help reassure me the dog was accurate. Done with this level of thoroughness and care, the peace of mind this service provides is invaluable. read more
