Just had a great breakfast at Beatrix. When we first walked in we were wrapped in the aroma of freshly baked cookies and bacon. The hostess promptly greeted us and took us to our table that had an open view of the kitchen. Our waitress Nicole was friendly, professional and attentive. This summer I've been a couple of time up there some times just for the cocktails and it's very nice because you can enjoy the outdoor terrace and the street was closed so it's very nice because it wasn't busy with the cars ,some other times we went there to have dinner and also now with the cold weather the ambiance inside it's so nice. Every time I go there I want to try something else and the cocktail are so refreshing and good. The hostess people and the personal stuff are very nice. I have to give a massive, massive shout out to Beatrix. My first visit here was last July, for my birthday dinner....on a super busy Saturday night. I had a reservation of at least 12 people...but it became a surprise party so there were at least 6-7 other people who came that were not included in my reservation. But the hosts/staff were SO gracious and accommodating. They managed to seat all of us, which I was not expecting given the almost nonexistent notice. Inside, it feels cozy yet very lively. In the summer I loved the big open windows and how we could watch and hear the live music that was going on right outside on the street. The service was terrific and the food delicious (the mushroom teriyaki bowl is outstanding if you like mushroom). They even brought out a slice of chocolate cake when they found out it was my birthday! I'm so grateful to them for squeezing us in. I came again for brunch a few weeks later and of course, it was great. Then this past week, when I went in for lunch during restaurant week, literally nothing had changed--kind and prompt service, wonderful food. I loved the whipped feta app, whatever honey/savory glaze they pool on top of it is chef's kiss. The enchiladas hit the spot, full of fresh toppings, and the prime burger is not only huge, it's soo quality. Also--their desserts slap, they're insanely rich; I've had the caramel pie and the chocolate cake...I take a couple days to work through a slice, which I am perfectly happy to do. Brought my girlfriend for brunch here one Saturday morning. It's her first time visiting Chicago and she's a bit of a foodie. I'm trying to convince her Chicago is a great culinary city, and Beatrix did not disappoint. I had the honey cinnamon latte and she had the dulce de leche latte. Both were delicious and didn't overpower the coffee flavor. We both had the steak and eggs. Steak was fantastic. My only gripe is the eggs and hashbrowns didn't seem to be seasoned. That's perfectly fine however I would suggest that when presenting food that customers may want to season to taste, that the table be set with salt, pepper, etc. Especially being a brunch serving where people may want to sweeten their coffee too. Great experience. Would certainly be interested in returning. read more

I had a Friday brunch/lunch here during a short stay in Chicago. I was staying in the hotel Beatrix is attached to (Aloft River North). I was keen on having a pretty lazy day so after a lie-in, I headed downstairs for a visit to the on-site restaurant. It was busy and I had been warned that reservations were encouraged. But I was there by myself, opting to eat at a weird time in between regular meal times, and I was happy to do it all in the bar area. So I was seated immediately thanks to that flexibility. But for a weekend brunch...expect a wait. Or make reservations. I was seated at the far end of the bar and the bartender was friendly and juggled his full-service folks at the bar as well as all the boozy brunch tickets from the rest of the servers. I got a coffee because...gimmie. I also got a pineapple habanero margarita (it's BRUNCH so it is acceptable!). Both delicious and hit the spot. For my meal, I got the bacon, cheddar and egg sandwich which was wonderful and a perfect size and really hit the spot. I didn't feel rushed (which can often happen when one I dining alone) and was utterly pleased to get some reading done as I sipped on my breakfast cocktail and coffee refills. I likely would not have known about or considered this spot if I wasn't sleeping directly above it. But I am glad I was there and was able to enjoy a meal here. An update: the restaurant's management folks followed up with me directly and was extremely apologetic, wanting to get more details and offered to make things right. That IS good customer service, and I'm leaving this here because it would not be fair to leave a bad review without acknowledging that they ARE paying attention, and they do care. I would give them another shot, but probably at a different location if I'm to be perfectly honest. So I suspect that we simply got unlucky with our experience. I unfortunately didn't get any picture of our meal since I was with a larger work group but it's definitely a place I'd go back. The food was unique and high quality, we all about licked out plates clean. The only reason this is getting a 4 is because the service want so great. I hope it was an off night, but service was just terrible. Drinks took forever, order took forever, no offer of refills, no check ins, had to ask for the check on the way to the ladies room. Missing utensils, order mistakes. The food was just ok. The tuna tartare was nearly shredded and covered in so much sauce it looked like cat food. Didn't taste bad, just didn't look appealing. The wife and I stopped at Beatrix as the menu had a good mix of things we both could eat. It was pretty close to the hotel so we bundled up and skedaddled on over. We were met with pretty friendly faces and seated immediately. The server was quite patient with us as we took a while to decide on what we wanted. I settled on the hot honey chicken sandwich. It was pretty tasty and the hearty breakfasts I needed to get me through the day. The atmosphere wasn't bad it juts was lacking that brunch energy I love so much. Overall not bad, just average. This is a pretty good place for brunch but I HIGHLY recommend you make a reservation. We saw numerous parties turned away and we tried to arrive early for a brunch reservation and they couldn't seat us until exactly the time we booked for (although we did see numerous tables available only 5-10 minutes before our reservation). The food here was pretty good and I had the bacon, cheddar, egg sandwich. It was pretty fulsome and you definitely don't leave hungry. I also had no problem with my allergies here. One note, service was average at best. It would be 10-15 minutes between visits by our waiter. We would ask for water, it would be a 15 minute wait. We wanted to order a second round of drinks, it took so long for our waitress to return that we decided not to order more. I understand not being hounded by a waiter while eating but when we all have empty mimosas, water cups, and no food, it might be worth a visit to the table. I don't have enough experience to say if it was due to lack of staffing or the waiter themselves, but I recommend the place look at making sure they are adequately staffed because they left money on the table with us, and probably others. Allergy note: I have a severe peanut & crustacean allergy and as of Dec 2023, they were able to handle my allergies and I had no issues. I came in as part of a large group work dinner and was immediately relieved as the waiter let me know that he, the chef, and other waiters were all aware that I had celiac and would take all needed precautions to prevent cross contamination. A gluten free menu was ready for me upon arrival (mentioned in the reservation), and most of the menu is available GF. Everything I tried was incredible-- Literally everything! I took a bite of my sons vanilla frosted (cake) donut with sprinkles, which I thought was guaranteed to be dry! Not the case, rather a moist, distinct vanilla flavor danced across my tastebuds. I was actually upset I was full and couldn't finish it! Came here for brunch. Everything we ordered were phenomenal. A bit pricey but expected considering the quality of food, the ambience and location (River North); it was worth it. Food: Started with regular coffee for the hubby. I like my coffee strong but not bitter and this coffee was right up my alley...and if I love it, hubby loves it (I always make his coffee). I ordered the hazelnut oat mocha which was really good too. The baked French toast was made to perfection--crunchy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside. The Ham and cheese croissant was made to perfection as well. I loved that they paired it with arugula salad that has a bit of a kick (see red chili peppers) but not overpowering--I don't like spicy food but the spice on this salad was just perfect for me. It came with mustard on the side which I didn't really care for. Now as for the brown sugar bacon--I'm not really a bacon person but this bacon was good...not too crispy but not too chewy. Service: We were served by a young lady name FARRAH--she said she's an assistant to our server but she's really in training. Well, she need Not be an assistant because her customer service skills were tops. Very pleasant, not pushy and courteous. Ambience: Nice ambience, corporate atmosphere but also commercial/family--caters to all. Clean. Feels busy but quaint. Place was packed, We had a 20 min wait. Tables are a bit crowded--too close to each other but just has enough space to move your chair. Every space is maximized. We will definitely go back here again. read more

Hello Yelpers it's been awhile! I still have a few restaurants in the vault from my Chicago trip back in August. Beatrix is one of them and I have time to give my unpopular opinion. Beatrix was a hidden gem for me but highly doubt it was for any Chicagoan. The restaurant was a blend of bookstore, coffeehouse and hotel lobby atmosphere. I arrived on a Friday morning at 10am while being greeted with a packed house. After putting my name down at the hostess station due to being told it will be awhile to get seated, I snagged two seats at the bar. This is where the slow-moving service issued occurred. I'm not sure on how the service was for other people who had a table seat but the bar service was none existing. Beatrix appeared to be under staffed and I do sympathize for restaurant owners post pandemic. But for me to track down the attention of a waiter/ess to just start my cousin and I off with water was frustrating! I'm not a basher for any businesses but do believe in speaking my true authentic experience. By that being said, the food was A1! I ordered "Eggs Your Way" with two sides of "Light & Fluffy Lemon Pancakes." Forget "Eggs Your Way" those pancakes, I ordered two servings!!! The most moist (with/out the lemon syrup), surprisingly none crispy edges (IYKYK-If you know you know), melt into your mouth while having a subtle flavor of lemon zest pancake I have ever tasted. read more

On our last day in Chicago we paid Beatrix a visit. This restaurant was right around the corner of our hotel and looked busy all the time. We made a reservation a day prior, I highly suggest you do this to avoid long waiting times or no table at all. I ordered the hot honey chicken sandwich and it was perfect. Chicken was juicy, very crispy and the bun was so soft and tasted amazing. My friend ordered the enchiladas, when they were served it didn't looked too appetizing. However, when she took the first bite, WOW! She was surprised at how good they were. I was able to try some and agreed. The salsa was delicious, the inside of the enchiladas was saucy, creamy and stuffed. Don't let appearances fool you on this dish! For drinks I like to go for green juices if ever the option, they had a power green juice which consisted of kale and pineapple-- so good. Overall, we all loved our meals and would definitely come back next time we're in Chicago. My dad and I came here for brunch and we were able to grab last minute reservations for 10am. We tried getting seated 5 min early, but we were seated right at 10. The waitress was really nice - it took us awhile to get our coffee as the barista was backed up, but it was not too long of a wait. I got the lemon pancakes which was pretty good! They were super soft and the lemon syrup was great. This place does get pretty packed and loud during brunch and the service is a little slow during this time as well. Such a vibe here! Stopped in for breakfast with friends and we had a blast! We had a short wait, which allowed us to stop by the bar/cafe station to get some drinks before we were sat. Once we arrived at our table, we ordered breakfast + more drinks. I went with the prime rib burger. It was so tender and flavorful. I appreciated the crispness of the fries and found the chutney for the top of the burger delicious as well. Over all 5/5 food + drink. We did need to split our ticket which seemed to erk the server, but was able to get it taken care of after a while. Good food in the heart of downtown Chicago. We had Brussels sprouts and hummus for appetizer, which was a great start for the meal. Our server explained the special from each category very well. They serve delicious American food with a healthy twist to it. Most people at my table got salmon placed on top of a lot of green vegetables. I got slow cooked short rib on a bed of sweet mashed potato and green peas. The rib was tender and falling apart easily. Visited Beatrix with some friends, and it was a cute, relaxed-upscale place. Service was a bit slow, but we were able to enjoy drinks while we waited. We arrived just on the cusp of brunch so we opted for pastries and green juice before placing our lunch order. The bakery counter was overflowing with fresh baked cookies, muffins, popovers and cinnamon rolls. We ordered the walnut chip brownie and vegan mega cookie. They were chewy thick and super deliciously fresh. We may have taken a few extras to go! For lunch I ordered the tuna poke bowl. The sushi grade tuna was fresh and delicious full of flavor. I was a little thrown off by the pairing of cashew granola but it paired perfectly. My husband ordered the veggie burger and fries and the brioche bun was soft and so fresh. We had a reservation for 7 at 7:45pm on a Wednesday. A server didn't come up to us until 8. The food was prepped very poorly - cooked poorly and there were items subbed in that wasn't on the menu. 5 of the entrees came out 15 minutes after the first 2. Bad food, can be excused. A busy dining room is also understandable (it was busy but not full by any means) but things need to be communicated to the customers. Bad food, almost non-existent service is inexcusable. What the hell is going on here? I own restaurants and if my front and back of house is operating this way, there'd be heads rolling. Also: there's a 3% restaurant charge they tack on without any word beforehand onto the check. BEWARE! THEY CHARGE YOU A 3% SURCHARGE FOR NO REASON. I do enjoy this restaurant overall. However, I was really disappointed to discover that their breakfast burrito which I really enjoy is made from carton eggs. I think restaurants should disclose when they are serving carton eggs rather than fresh eggs as to me they are just disgusting. If I want carton eggs I can go to a fast food restaurant but you don't expect that at a place like Beatrix. I realize this is a high-volume establishment but I think the price point warrants having someone crack fresh eggs for the breakfast burrito! read more

Caught up with an old college friend I had not seen in over 20 years. We walked over to this Beatrix. I love the set up of this place. Kind of indoor outdoor seating. We were waited on quickly. The only thing is the kitchen closed early so we had to order pretty quickly. I think it closed at 9p ouch! I had two drinks and dessert my friend got the salmon and said it was pretty good. He said the guac was fine, nothing special. But putting the guac on top of the enchiladas was a game changer. Literally every time I come to Beatrix I get the green enchiladas. I don't need a menu. And I actually crave, and dream about the tall, dark and handsome cake. For a cake in general, but a gf cake especially, it's so luscious and divine.
