My friends and I were walking around the cemetery across the street, when we heard a freedom trail tour guide make a joke in front of the grave of Samuel Adams: "The Beantown Pub: the only place in Boston where you can drink a cold Sam Adams while looking at a cold Sam Adams." Awful, I know. So in order to be able to say that awful statement, my friends and I ended up here to drink some Sam Adams Brick Red, which was delicious. We also had some pretzels, which were alright, nothing crazy special. The bartender was pleasant and checked up on us a few times. Seems like most people end up here because of that joke. On the way out, I saw another tourist take a picture with her Sam Adams (beer) with Sam Adams in the background. read more

Billiards, a great jukebox, and good pub fare. I had no intention of having dinner here, but a few drinks and appetizers with friends went over quite well at The Pub. With a decent variety of draft beer, my friends were easily appeased. We had fried calamari (on par) and fried pickles. Haling from Alabama I dare say my taste for fried pickles is righteous, and Beantown Pub played perfectly to my Southern palate with their thick-cut sweet pickles, fried to golden perfection in what I think was a great beer batter. Based on these three items, I would say they're worth more than a try, at least their appetizer menu, anyway. read more

Stayed at Nine Zero next door and came in from a late flight. Nothing was open but this place was populated. They were advertising their lobster roll. I was scared to have my first roll experience here but I was starving. Staff was a little slow to get to our table but friendly and apologetic when they did find us. I ordered the roll because more folks there said it was awesome. It was! I had several rolls during my stay and this was up there with the best. The lobster chunks were big and plentiful. The fries were crispy. And they served a garlic butter with the roll which was to die for. The beer were not the coldest which they should work on. I was never concerned about the area like others stated. Great location and great bar food. If I went back to Boston, I would come here again. I went to some high end restaurants while I was there but I keep thinking about this roll! read more

I would probably honestly give this place 3.5 stars on a count of the fact that the service was excellent. I ordered a grilled cheese with Tomato and Sauteed onions. It wasn't bad but the cheese was barely melted and the tomato and onions under cooked. I got mashed for a side and they were good and you get a huge portion. I have been ordering grilled cheese at restaurants lately and the last 2 have not been melted so I'm not sure if being too lazy to melt the cheese is a new trend in dining. Waitress was very friendly and attentive with respect to drink refills. I had been walking all day and was happy to rest my feet and have a meal with a drink but what irked me about this place was how loud the radio was. Difficult to find something good about this place. The food was pricey but worse than in any below-decent fast food chain, the IPA's we did were disappointing. We tried to dine here a couple of years ago and we were not served. Everyone around us was getting served by the same waitress. After a 30 minute wait I complained to the server she said that she would get our order in yet never came back to our table. People who sat down after us were already getting their food. I complained to the manager and he seemed disinterested and annoyed. After 45 plus minutes and our order still not taken we left. No coincidence that my wife was the only person there who was not white. After reading other reviews and talking to my wife about it. After a couple years it still angers me that This lack of service was clearly racially motivated towards my wife who is Asian and Puerto Rican. Even after I complained to the manager we weren't served. They wanted clearly us to leave. This was the type of discrimination you would see in the south 50 years ago. I truly hope this place goes out of business and I will never forget how this place treated us. read more

I've only come here for lunch on a weekday so I can't comment on the bar scene. However, Beantown Pub is always a filling, pretty inexpensive lunch. I love the grilled cheese and fries for $8. Their seafood dishes are surprisingly tasty -- fried scallops and fish and chips are good choices. There is never a wait at lunch time and the staff get you in and out quickly. read more

My husband and I thought we would catch a glass of great Boston beer and stopped by the Beantown Pub enroute to our hotel. The place was PACKED - which we took as a good sign. There were all ages represented and the bartender was very attentive with great service. However, the soundtrack playing in the background was rap, rap, rap. So if you like hearing things about your mother with abundant use of the F word as a noun, adjective, and verb....then this is your place. The pub smelled of mold and old beer and vomit. It would benefit from a DEEP cleaning. The Beantown Pub needs to conduct a customer analysis to select music more appropriate for the wide range of ages represented in its customers! read more
