RIP Namu Gaji on Balboa, you really made your own unique mark on both Balboa and the hype-machine food scene here in San Francisco in the 2010s. The Lee empire will go down in K-Am history as the outfit that brought Korean cuisine out of the late 70s and early 80s and moved it even beyond what the bigger and flashier restaurants were doing. Now, the not-so-good things. - Food: I ordered a breakfast sandwich, and when it arrived, the square of cheese on it still had condensation from the refrigerator, and was just this side of cold. The ingredients themselves were great--especially the avocado mash--but I ended up taking it home and reheating it just so I could see what actual melted cheese looked like. - Customer service: I unfortunately agree with all the negative reviews about customer service. I originally stumbled across this cafe when it first opened, was delighted to read the menu, and each time have been driven away by the sour attitude of some of the baristas. Most recently, this weekend--after having been away for about two years--I had the exact same experience others have described (saying a genuine thank you, and receiving a resentful almost-glance and a bordering-on-sarcastic frown in return). Customer service is part of the food experience. If an establishment's staff are treated so poorly that they look unhappy in public (a certain Glen Park market, years ago)--or if servers are allowed to treat customers poorly--both are problems that need to be addressed. And both are management issues, not necessarily the servers' or the customers' fault. I can only think that the owners/managers have some kind of reason to rationalize away the baristas' unpleasant behavior. I will say that after I originally decided to stop going, I walked by one day and saw one of the owners talking to the staff, both of whom were interacting with the same indifferent and disdainful attitude that some of us are finding so offputting. He didn't seem to notice--or somehow, he was taking it in stride--so that may be the problem. In contrast, I went down the street to Kamei Restaurant & Supply later and had a great time. That store has been putting in the work for over 40 years and is constantly overflowing with both tourists and locals, and I've never had a bad experience there. In fact, when they closed on the dot at 5:00 pm, the staff member who had to get all the customers out was very gracious and professional, even though his English was hard to understand. He literally motioned us along the path like we were in the classiest of hotels, and looked at me like he was really trying to help me find the right direction out (the front aisles were completely blocked by the rolling shelves from outside). And the owner/manager gave me a real smile as I went out the door. I hope Pixlcat succeeds. My advice would be to cut down the menu and focus on getting the service and a few core items right.
