Not anything like what I expected based on photos. Yes it is on the beach, but there is a huge sand dune so you can't see the water from the restaurant. It's always busy so make sure to build in wait time, especially if with a large group. The food is what you would expect from a beach bar but takes just as long to get as a table. Laid back, just like the town. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much but the food was great, our drinks were stiff and our server warmed up over the course of our dinner and had a heart of gold. This place is exactly what it appetizes itself to be. It's a great spot looking over the beach, as much as possible in Saint Augustine. There are tables outside inside and such an array of folks visiting the restaurant! There several other couples with dogs at some of the outdoor picnic tables. There were young people, clearly locals, and several snowbirds. The weather was chilly but sunny, and the staff were super friendly. I was doing takeout so I enjoyed a bloody Mary while I waited for the food. Best bloody Mary ever! I was told it was made in house with all fresh and natural ingredients. It hit the spot lol!! We ordered two appetizers and two sandwiches. My husband ate his burger and we shared the calamari and conch fritters. We ate my turkey club for dinner that night because we were too full on the appetizers to eat the second sandwich at lunch! This has long been a local favorite but I was shocked when I went a few days ago. Eight fried shrimp was $17.95! (Lunch & dinner menu is the same.) I asked were the shrimp breaded in house & was told yes. The heavy breading completely obscured the flavor of the shrimp. The hush puppies were cold & gelatinous. The red beans & fries just mediocre. First of all, everything was amazing! We only got pictures of these drinks but all of our food was amazing too. At first, I was a little off put by the kind of high prices of the food and drinks. They seemed like prices you'd pay at a nice restaurant, not some beach hut but after tasting everything, it's totally worth it. The bar obviously has a well curated bar program and puts a lot of love into their drinks with fresh squeezed juice, and from the taste of it, no mixes or anything low quality. The food was all great but my favorite part was the vegetable of the day, Thai green beans or something along those lines. Actually seasoned super well and cooked to perfection with just a bit of crunch to it but still edible. Amazing! I'm not used to restaurants knowing how to make veggies well. As you can see from the photos, everything was presented well and very picturesque if you're looking for some IG pics. Beachcomber is a cool beach bar and restaurant. The drinks are wonderful. I had a frozen marg and a pineapple marg. The crab dip special and coconut shrimps were delicious. LOVED it! We come here every year but heard some bad reviews recently. Nothing bad to report here! Janell was our waitress and she was great! Had her mask on right which is a big with us. The hostess working at 12:30 today was the most rude hostess I have ever had in my life. We were just seated and asked for a table by the beach. She wanted to put us at a table by the road. We asked to sit at the table closer to the beach and her response with an extremely rude tone was "I WILL SIT YOU AT THE DUNES IF YOU WANNA STARE AT THE DUNES...". The waitress said she would let someone know because I told her the hostessi was extremely rude and needs a new profession. This will definitely determine me being a local resident to Saint Augustine in not wanting to come back here if I'm debating on restaurants to attend. The steak sandwich was loaded with fat. We asked the waitress for extra extra crispy cooked wings and they weren't even close to crispy. The celery....the dadil sauce, the two corona lights and the shrimp were good. On another good note our waitress was good. She was very attentive and very busy. I just wanted to make sure your establishment knows about the rude hostess and the not so good food. Got some drinks and talked to the locals. Mango Cart on tap was really good. Wife got a Real McCoy which she enjoyed. Crab cake appetizer was ok. Not any lump crab that I noticed but tasty. Surprisingly good food in a super laid back beach setting. The wait staff was fantastic and super accommodating!! Various FL craft beers on draft and fresh daily specials. The blackened fish tacos I had were delicious. Not too much blackening seasoning on the fish, but the fillet was cooked nicely, tasted great, and was a huge cut for just 2 tacos. The slaw on top was tasty and worked well. Not sure what the white sauce on top was, or why it was even on there(??), but overall the taco was still quite satisfying. My brother said the club sammich was solid. Not the usual club style, but the toasted bun was surprisingly good. Only downside....the other people eating there. Lady next to us hacked up 3/4 of a lung while here deadbeat shirtless husband puffed e-cig all over everything. For years our go-to beachside restaurant in the Saint Augustine area was South Beach Grill. Well - it's gone. I'm not sure if it was victim of Covid-19 or bad management or both. Our daughter and her wife recently bought a house here after living with us for over a year because of the pandemic. Her spouse was allowed to work entirely from home for the entire time (still is), but she was relocated to the Jacksonville office. They LOVE Saint Augustine and since she will only have to go to the office twice a week when they do go back, they just didn't want to live in Jacksonville. My wife and I helped them to move and I drove the moving truck from Tennessee to their new home. Our first few nights were spent in a hotel and decided to eat at Mango Mango just down the A1A Beach Blvd. After eating there we decided to take a short walk to the beach when we came upon this little gem sitting just behind the dunes. Looking like a dive with blue LED tube lights attached to the deck rails and partially working Christmas icicle lights hanging from the deck eaves we decided to try it the next night. Ocean-worn picnic tables of varying sizes occupied the outside seating. There are about five metal picnic tables with patio umbrellas sitting in the sand between the restaurant and the dunes. They had triangle sails for additional protection from the sun and the rain (sorta) were stretched from posts. This was my favorite spot. There was a makeshift bar waiting area to the left of the hostess station on the deck as well as a combination of plastic and wood Adirondack chairs sitting in the sand by the dunes. Did I mention we went there about 6 times in a two week period?! Was every meal a life changing experience? No, but every meal - coupled with the atmosphere, top-notch staff, cool ocean breezes and scenic surroundings made for a very relaxed and very enjoyable dining experience. The ONLY menu item I was somewhat disappointed with was the shrimp Po-Boy. All it really needed was for the bread to be a little softer, fresher and definitely buttered and then toasted on the flat-top. It was basically taken from the package, loaded with the shrimp and veggies and served. The many items tried (mainly by my daughter-in-law and myself) were The Big Fish Reuben, The Catch of the Day fried, Stuffed Catch of the Day, grilled catch of the day (Trigger fish), Crab cakes, red beans and rice, chips and Guacamole, calamari, Minorclan Clam Chowder, vegetarian brat, fish and chips, coleslaw, dill cucumber potato salad, entree salad with the special blue cheese dressing (forget the exact name), fried shrimp dinner and of course the French fries. There was steamed shrimp, steamed ruby red shrimp, more steamed shrimp, more steamed ruby red shrimp, steam shrimp and ruby read shrimp - channeling Bubba Gump - sorta - did I mention steamed shrimp? My wife and daughter had steamed shrimp the first night and that is pretty much all they got! Then they found the Ruby Red Shrimp on the Specials menu. Every. Single. Meal. The fries were frozen, but they were good - I guess no one wants to slice potatoes anymore - shame - that would make it next level. The red beans and rice was really good. Everything was good except the aforementioned Po Boy, but it was OK and had a good portion of shrimp - the same shrimp used in the shrimp dinner. It basically goes without saying that the steamed shrimp was good. The Ruby Red has the taste and texture of lobster and is best served warm with melted butter. As mentioned - the location and atmosphere added immensely to the experience of dining here. Hey - shoes were optional and swimsuits were allowed as were dogs - leashed and only on the deck. We only went inside to go to the restroom - it's more of a bar scene in there (read - LOUD). We sat with our toes in the sand the majority of our visits - except that night it rained, but they were able to move us under the roof even though they were pretty busy. Oh - the Key Lime Pie - a few pieces were bought over the course of our visit. It was good. One piece that was to be taken back to the house, was dropped in the sand during a beach walk - ironically while we were talking about the episode of FRIENDS where the cheesecake was dropped on the floor!
