We drove up to Trinidad from the Bay Area a few weeks ago and we had breakfast here twice. We were so charmed by the staff, the menu, the space and the mantra. No paper cups. No waste. We loved it so much. You can either bring that cup that's been rolling around in your backseat so they can give wash and fill it with coffee, or you can have your coffee in a mason jar for $2. Such a simple concept. Why don't we do this everywhere? Ya'll know you have way too many mugs in your cabinets and under your car seats not truly fulfilling their destinies. Bring them here! My favorite thing about this place aside from their sustainable model is their staff. Melissa greeted us at the front counter. Cheerful and hilarious. We had several exchanges and we really enjoyed her. Also, Emily, cake maker extraordinaire, Alice, baking queen and Melia, expert sandwich maker were all so lovely to chat with. While we were sitting out in the back enjoying the sunshine, we were also treated to some live folk music by a musician performing in the Beachcomber's patio. So nice. Okay, I'm gushing now, but there's more. The food is phenomenal - just look at my pictures. Drippy egg sandwiches were to die for. Not to mention their muffins, cakes, and scones. YUM. I just had to get one of their "Yer Mom" planet earth shirts. The best. There really is no reason to go anywhere else within a 20 mile radius for your breakfast and coffee. Coffee was great, we had the Americano and honey matcha latte. Her Veggie breakfast sandwich was great, and we got some sandwiches to go along with baked goods. It was my breakfast that was the problem. I got about halfway through my smashed avocado toast when my wife pointed out the ants crawling out of my breakfast. I found about 3-4 in the arugula and told the server. She immediately took it back and brought a new one in a few minutes. Clearly this arugula was well washed and much more care was put into it. Had we not gotten the response to the issue, it would've been a 1 star review, but I appreciated how quickly they reacted and took it seriously. Hopefully next time they'll clean the kitchen better and pay attention to the little critters! read more

I stopped by recently after the new owners took over. They really made the place look nice! It's super cute inside, and the outdoor patio is awesome as usual. I really like the specials that the new owners are putting out. I had a good latte. I have to add that I was disappointed to see that they started using disposable/to go cups now. While I understand why the new owners would want to make the shift, I always loved and respected that Beachcomber had a bring your own cup policy. A true Humboldt Gem. Our first time here in a few years, the new owners are absolutely amazing. We came to try the food, and we were pleased with elevated food/drink from local sources. My matcha latte was amazing, her caramel latte was decadent. The Summer Caprese Sandwich was one of the best sandwiches I have had across all of Humboldt county. It felt like 80% of it was dry, seasoned tortilla chips, with a minimum of sauce on top. I was also disappointed they would not make the poached eggs into scrambled...something about needing a license to fry things. You're a brunch spot so...get the license! 7/6/19 Ever been to a hippie cafe? Well, have you been to Beachcomber Cafe?... no? Then NO, you have NOT been to a hippie cafe..... this is the mutha of all hippiness, trust me. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is hippie hipster as f. Staff is covered in tattoos but don nerdy glasses and definitely do not exude anything other than peace-ey vibe. In big bold letters you'll find on the menu: "NO PAPER CUPS, if you want to run away with your beverage, please bring your own cup..." Oh and the food......... your mommy would be super very proud (and probably when you're not looking, run away to a gas station to grab a pack of powdered doughnuts)... 1. Multi-Cultural Bagel $1.50 "whole-grain everything": Yeah, so, they got 2 types of bagels: sesame (yuck), and THIS... basically their version of an "everything bagel" except it would be everything except for good tasting. Holy muther, ... if you took vitamins in the morning, do not get this cause you'd be overdosing on vitamins and nutrients. Or I assume you would because it's frickin' overload of earthiness and vegginess and just everything I hate. Alright, my chefy-gf says it's actually near perfectly made technically for a all-grain bagel. She loved it. I think she's allowed to be crazy once in a while. 8/10 2. Organic Cream Cheese $1.65: Well, it's cream cheese. I can do without the organic'ism.... but I guess the milk came from real utters? Good. 5/10 3. Lox Special $8.75 "organic cream cheese, lox, red onion, capers": Yeah, so, again they only had sesame or everything bagels, and I hate sesame so I got the other. It's fine. Good quality smoked salmon. Crap tons of fresh-tasting capers (if that's a thing, cause I think capers are pickled?) Well, I assume they did these in-house cause they did have that fresh crunchy feel and taste. 8/10 4. Almond Milk "house made with love!": I gotta say... this is kinda special. My mom used to make soy bean milk Chinese style (used a blender to pulverize boiled soy beans, and used cheesecloth to hang press the bean meal). Real homemade soy milk tastes nothing like what they sell in Caucasian-style supermarkets. I really got no idea how they get that stuff so milky and creamy, but anyway, that's not how it is supposed to taste. Same thing with market-bought almond milk apparently. This fresh house-made version tastes a lot like my mom's soy bean milk--thinner, fresher, not creamy. There's only a small hint of almond taste. I dig it. Really cool. After breakfast at the Trinidad Bay Eatery, I was looking for some more caffeine. So I stopped in the Beachcomber Cafe. There was quite a line for coffee and espresso drinks - so I was sure I was in good hands! I ordered a double shot espresso with a bit of foam made from Half n' Half on top. They don't have to-go cups - so I opted to sit outside and enjoy my espresso. I am notorious for gulping down espresso - so I spent a few minutes sipping it - instead of my usual kill it in a few seconds. They have some picnic tables outside. The espresso was excellent! Ambiance: Somewhat small coffee shop with cramped tables but clean and homely. The place is filled with hippies complete with non-washed hair, bare feet, and beards but everyone was super-friendly. We appreciated the free wireless. Food: We got the Griz bagel which consisted of 2 slices of ham, 2 poached eggs, and melty swiss. The larrupin' sauce was tangy and slightly sweet which seems odd but was used sparingly so it only accented the rest of the flavors. The savory scone daily special consisted of lightly-sautéed greens and poached eggs served with chimichurri. The dish was a little dry overall but much this was easily remedied by a little hot sauce. We also got a strawberry cheesecake scone to share which had a lightly crispy exterior and moist crumb interior, exactly what we wanted. Finally, we had two Mexican mochas which were not too sweet and had nice homemade whipped cream. The only flaw in the mochas was the sheer amount of cinnamon which was precarious when it floated to the back of your throat and was unpalatable once it settled down to the bottom of the cup. Overall, we really enjoyed the simplicity and freshness of the food at Beach Combers. Their desserts look amazing and the scone we had was spot on. We'd gladly come back for its unique food and charming atmosphere, just be warned you can easily spend almost $40 on breakfast with two dishes, 2 mochas, and a scone. read more

We were on our way up the coast and stopped at the Beachcomber for a quick breakfast after leaving Eureka. My wife found it on Yelp, and it looked like a good find, especially since there's not really much between Eureka and the Oregon border. A small place about two blocks from the ocean, it has some outdoor seating and can seat about 15-18 people (tightly) in the small dining room inside. They had some customers, but it wasn't packed. The nice woman taking orders helped us navigate the menu and took our orders. We paid, filled our coffee cups and found a table in the small dining area. Our food took a bit to arrive, but it did get busy after we ordered and there were only two employees working. They delivered our breakfast, but forgot my boy's hot chocolates. She apologized and brought them fairly quickly afterwards. I ordered the "Griz" breakfast bagel and it was good. The bagel was a bit rubbery, but everything else about it was delicious. All of our bagels were a bit rubbery, which was a bummer, but everything else was great. The coffee was really good. All in all, I liked the Beachcomber and I'd go back...unless there's a better breakfast place in the small town of Trinidad, which I highly doubt. Loved the food here. It is super healthy and pretty tasty too. We ordered the bean bowl with poached eggs and a wonderful salad. The eggs were poached perfectly. Only criticism was that the whole dish could have used a bit more seasoning. My husband's salad was amazing and they were nice enough to give him both of their special dressings on the side so he could try them both. Really good salad dressings: one was tahini based and the other based on sunflower butter I believe. The major issue is that it is super popular.
