Best. Breakfast. Ever. I wish I could give this place 10 stars! I'm from Portland and I'm used to good gluten free options, but this place takes the cake! The gluten free bagel was fantastic. It was actually the size of a regular bagel, plus it was thick and chewy like bagels are supposed to be. The staff are so sweet, and they helped me make my own bagel sandwich. GF bagel, fantastic oven roasted turkey, rich white cheddar, and the best poached eggs on the planet (I don't even normally like poached eggs) made me one happy customer. I wish I lived nearby so I could come back more often! The coffee is great too. My boyfriend got the "basic breakie" with a side of turkey and was just as happy as I was with my food. My husband and I stopped here for breakfast on our Oregon to California road trip. We drove up from McKinnleyville for this spot and it was so worth it. We both had the specials. He had the turkey/spinach frittata and I had the savory scone with poached eggs and chimmy churry sauce. The food exceeded expectations. Quality ingredients and made with love. The local art featured inside made for a wonderful community feel. The drip coffee was powerful and tastey. Husband had a cappuccino. Would 100% recommend coming here for breakfast/brunch. Twice while traveling up the coast I have camped in my van nearby just so I would be able to go here for breakfast. They DO NOT have paper cups for coffee .... This place is committed to reducing waste! I brought my own cup, as always! It definitely could do a little better on the gluten-free tip. The fresh baked goods and breads look so darn good but I generally avoid gluten. They do have a a few gluten-free things but it's not a gluten-free kitchen so it's not good for people with a genuine allergy. However, this gluten-free bread with my breakfast is amazing! If you're looking for the most eco friendly cafe in California, Beachcomber Cafe is the place to be. With a quick walk to a beautiful lookout point, this cafe has it all. There is no trash in order to not have any plastic waste. They do NOT have any to go containers to limit waste. Our food was put in to the top of an egg carton for easy disposal. Everyone here is so helpful and the food is incredible - they show pride in every dish they make, focusing on a select menu and showing enthusiasm for every dish and brew they make. This place is a little paradise - and the views from the outside bench patio and inside windows are so great. It's been around for years - a local treasure - and was recently remodeled to comfortably accommodate the rush they get on busy lunch days. Loved loved loved. They had multiple vegan options and while I thought the bean bowl was yummy, I feel like a good slice of bread or toast with it would have made it great. We got the hippy sandwich that was also vegan and that was excellent. I do wish they had a vegan baked good item but from other reviews it seems like they usually do so I must have been there on a random day they didn't. The meat eaters in the group were equally in love with their meals. The coffee and tea drinks were so so good. The woman that took our order was soooooo nice. I love trying small local spots in small towns. Thanks to google maps and yelp we were kindly directed to this cafe for coffee on our drive down the coast. It was a super easy detour from the 101. I've been working on my zero waste efforts and happen to have two mason jars with me which came very handy as they only offer to sell you a mason jar for to go orders. The line to order moved a bit slow, but you can tell the cashier was taking her time to make each transaction personal. Since we spent a few minutes in line, I had the time to check out their delicious menu and debate with my husband on what pastry I should get. We decided on the vegan lemon poppy seed muffin that was just the right level of sweetness to accompany our coffees. The bathroom is clean and although there was a consistent line to use too, it beat any gas station toilet along the way. read more

What a great little breakfast niche! The food is organic and local. I guess some other yelpers have an issue with that because it "limits" the selection on the menu, but I actually prefer locally grown food. This place is fantastic for vegetarians. I can honestly say that I've had one of thee best panini here. As for the drinks, if you're teetering between the chai and Mexican hot chocolate, go for the latter. The chai isn't milk based, so it lacks flavor. A few other yelpers also complained about waiting a while for their food, but we didn't have that experience. This isn't a fast food joint and we understand that preparing delicious food takes a hot minute :) This place is environmentally friendly, and has that laid back and er, hippie-ish feel, and I love that! I am slightly obsessed with the Beachcomber Cafe. I don't even know where to start. This little gem was the highlight of a 30+ hour roadtrip down the coast that stretched from Portland to LA. We stopped in Trinidad to check it out and find something to eat, and the Beachcomber Cafe stuck out with its bright orange exterior and chill vibe. Upon entering, my three companions and I were welcomed immediately. The cashier asked our names and remembered them, had opinions to share about different items on the menu, and was extremely friendly. Besides the excellent service, the food was delicious. And I'm not just saying that because all I had eaten for three days was fast food. I ordered a turkey sandwich and I promise I'm not exaggerating - it was the best turkey sandwich I've ever had. They kept it simple, like it should be, but added flair in all the right places. Perfect proportion of meat to foccacia to veggies. YUM. Boyfriend had the special of the day which turned out to be some sort of stew with black beans, poached eggs, and avocado. It was great, but I liked my sandwich better. Our two friends both had bagels with lox - also very tasty. The best part? It was all organic and very fresh. I also enjoyed how homey it was. They had a guitar that anyone could pick up and play, as well as walls decorated with paintings and pictures made by elementary schoolers from the school across the street. Overall, if you're in the area, do not leave without stopping at Beachcomber. If you're close to Trinidad, find a way to get there. read more

Legit, local, hippie-friendly place. Well worth a detour off the highway, or a double-back if you are camping up at Patricks Point SP. Staff were feeling it, having fun, and keeping things moving in a vibey manner. We enjoyed sitting outside in the fog/mist and chatting with a few locals. Alas, we were a bit late, so the folks *right* in front of us got the last special, then sat nearby and ate less than 1/2 of it and left it behind. Sigh. Tasty fresh coffee on the pump, good mocha for my lass, and very tasty baked goods/prepped food. One of the best places to get a bite on the Lost Coast or North Coast. I'm sorry I didn't discover it sooner. They've got a coffeehouse vibe: order at the counter and find a table. The food options are good. They use really good bread and fresh ingredients. My panino had Cypress Grove chevre, beets, fresh greens, walnuts and more. My companion had a sandwich with tasty hummus and avocado. They served our sandwiches with samples of the coconut-curry-carrot soup, which was delicious. Both the regular menu and the board of specials & soups made it hard to choose what to order; that's a rare and good thing for me. As others have said, they have a commitment to reducing waste. So for to-go drinks, you either bring a commuter mug or buy a mason jar with lid for a buck. If you stay, you can either take a mug from the counter or bring your own from home. I like that. There were people hanging around outside and inside, with lots of locals who knew each other, catching up. Staff were equally friendly to everyone, though, and we felt welcome. If I lived here, I'd be a regular. When I'm headed down the 101 from Crescent City, I'll find an excuse to stop here. The baked goods looked great. read more

Welcome to the Beachcomber Cafe! Here we will give you the stink eye and you will like it. What's that? You want to take your coffee with you? That's absurd!!! We don't do that here! You are part of the problem with the world! Mass consumption of paper cups!!!! Feel free to take a mason jar and drive the bumpy PCH but bring it back by 4pm. If you don't, the crunch cops are coming for you. We try and hold as many patrons hostage as we can. We actually want you to suffer and listen to our narrow, liberal views on the world while you drink our great tasting coffee and eat our delicious baked goods. So, sit tight and stare at the overpriced artwork for sale. Listen to how the greedy business men and women who brought technology, like coffee makers, are killing the earth. I have to say, the coffee and bakery is excellent. The wacky rules about no "to go" cups is messed up. I'm a pretty good judge of demeanor and body language. They cater to locals, not tourists. I'm not sure why they're overly aggressive about being tree huggers. It's ok, most people who read the news understand that we have an excess trash problem but we have recycle and compost bins now. read more

My review is probably a bit biased since I lived a few doors away from the Beachcomber cafe for 6 years. Everything about the cafe is amazing. It's run by 3 wonderful women who truly care about the planet and put so much love into every baked good, every cup of tea, every mocha, every sandwich that its just a gem if you are traveling and happen to come across it. I enjoyed it when I first was visiting Northern CA and realized it was the best food and atmosphere i had experienced my whole trip. Then after moving there and being a local it was my home away from home. You get to chat with an eclectic mix of folks and discuss everything from politics, spirituality, weed prices and where the best surf is breaking ...and all this great conversation is over the best food. Its like being at the best brunch/dinner party everyday. If passing through this part of the country then this is a must, just don't ask for a to go cup....real tree huggers here! This is a great local cafe in Trinidad, CA. I found that the menu had a lot of great breakfast items to choose from as well as a large selection of homemade pastries muffins and cakes that looked phenomenal. They are big on only serving fresh local and organic ingredients which is great if that is important to you. There is also no to go coffee cups so brig your own! For breakfast I got the condescending vegan and I really enjoyed it. It tasted really fresh and the spicy tahini sauce was delicious. My friend got the black bean bowl with poached eggs and really enjoyed it. You can also create your own bagel creation. I also really enjoyed their cafe beverages. I got an almond milk late with their homemade almond milk and it was fabulous. My only suggestion is so not come here when you're in a rush as the service is slow. read more

We're in Trinidad and we have about 30 minutes before we need to start setting up for my brother's wedding reception next door. We didn't really have a choice because the town of Trinidad is about the same size as a large gas station, but we left this cafe happy and satisfied. First of all, this place is totally North Coast - nature photos for sale on the wall (about 100 of them), all the employees wearing homemade beanies, and no paper cups for coffee, but rather a collection of eccentric mugs. Chalkboard menus, a corner for tots, and each table unique from the other. It would fit right into Portlandia. I made a great cup of coffee at the coffee table, with raw sugar and half-and-half, and we sat down at table for two with flowers and waited for our food. Lacy ordered a bagel with lox and cream cheese and some kind of soup - I can't remember what kind of soup, but I remember we were sad when it was gone. The bagel was perfectly toasted and flavored with capers and onions - those are becoming our comfort food. I had the black bean bowl, some kind of daily special, which was just a bed of black beans topped with two poached eggs, jack cheese, and a generous amount of avocado - yummers! What an amazing little Cafe! I was amazed by the low waste style the place had, everything was served in mugs, mason jars or plates. No plastic, no wasteful use of paper. It had such a nice homey, rustic feel, I felt so comfortable and at peace. The ladies working there are the kindest, you can tell they really put their heart into their work. The bakery case looked wonderful, but I was disappointed to find that there was not a single vegan baked good option available. Somewhat surprising for a place focused on environmental consciousness. However, there were about 4 fully vegan menu options, including a burrito bowl, soup, and a sandwich. I opted for the 'Pretentious Vegan' Bagel, which was very good. The bagel was hearty and chewy, topped with layers of delicately spiced fresh hummus and a rich olive tapenade. The lightly pickled carrots and onion on top were the perfect finishing touch. The vegan Coconut Curry Zucchini Soup was also excellent-rich and full of flavor. My Americano was delicious, brimming with bold espresso flavors. I tried to simplify it for my kids with just the hummus and shredded carrots on a multi-grain. They found it a little spicy but I enjoy the peppery flavor. I ordered the Veggie Reuben with no oil-based dressing and no cheese. It's a big, filling focaccia sandwich and I could only eat half. I asked lots of questions and got helpful service.
