I love good little hole-in-the-wall places. Good ol' Yelp led me here. I had a grilled shrimp po' boy with a side of classic gumbo (chicken and sausage). The food was excellent, very authentic. The service was very friendly and the prices were reasonable. Like the Terminator, I'll be back. read more

The food was good, the price and the service. We had the fish and chips and the gumbo we really like both.

Today I tried a new one. Happy's Bayou Bites located near downtown Dunedin. A small unassuming food truck converted into an outdoor restaurant. It is located just off of Skinner Boulevard at the corner of Howard Avenue. There are 4 picnic tables and just enough parking for that. Jan and I went there with her sisters and their husbands. Tom and Becky, Patty and Bill we were all celebrating Valentines day and this was a nice place to do that and have lunch. Jan had the fried catfish basket and I had the chicken and sausage gumbo. Jan said the fish was very good, light breading and flaky moist fish. She cleaned her plate. The gumbo was also very good. Not too tomatoey with just the right amount of spice. At first I did not want the french bread that came with it but at the last minute I changed my mind and I'm glad I did. The bread was light and tender with a crispy crust. Very fresh. The perfect accompaniment to the gumbo. The bread soaked up the savory juices just right. I also had a tomato and cucumber side. That was much better than I expected. The tomatoes were tangy ripe and there was just a hint of spices. The salad tasted garden fresh. Everyone else also seemed to enjoy their meal that this outdoor restaurant. I'm sure we will be going back, Soon! read more

I had a complete opposite experience at Happy's Bayou Bites compared to other reviewers who seemed to give it high ranks. Unfortunately, my ratings for this place is very low both from experience to the quality and taste of food served here. The service was very poor and disorganized. Upon my arrival I found myself in a waiting line of about 7 other people and the makeshift courtyard of picnic tables and standing tables seemed all occupied by about another 14 patrons of all ages. It took 35 minutes for me to make up to the ordering counter. Yes, 35 minutes for 7 people to order for a standing line. Finally upon getting to the ordering counter, I had to wait another 5 minutes while the lady behind the counter fussed with food trays, keeping the whole line waiting. Subsequently, another 25 minutes passed before I got my order of Crawfish-Pork Sausage, salad, and side of Hush-Puppies, served. See the picture. That's exactly how they arrived, seemed like just thrown onto the plastic tray without any care. The taste of all of what I was served, is nothing special and the lack of care in how the food is served does not redeem Happy's Bayou Bites dismal service for my experience. Happy's Bayou Bites, is a glorified food-truck with a make-shift roadside stand atmosphere that does not suite its its staffs' lack of ability handling patrons in upward of 12 or so at a time and its lack of ability to server up food with care and of good taste. Maybe Happy's Bayou Bites is better suited for Food Truck rallies and or fairs? (I noticed some "best of....' fair posters hanging from a make-shift wall). Paired with the disorder of ordering process, dismal service, carelessness of the food-prep staff and lack of any special taste, I am giving this place a 1 star. I wish I could rate it higher like some of the other yelpers, but honestly no matter what angle I look at this place, I simply can't give it higher. So if you are reading this review still, please proceed to this place at your own risk. Maybe you will have experience like some others, or maybe you will have an experience like me - utterly disappointed. read more

It's impossible to choose a "wrong" thing here! Every single item on the menu is 12/10. My fiancé & I stay in Dunedin for a staycation a few times each year and Happy Bayou Bites is ALWAYS the *first* place we go. We've had almost every po' boy and we always order whatever the special of the day is. More than enough food but we love having their leftovers to munch for the rest of the day. Their shrimp po' boy is my personal favorite (fried) but alligator bites po' boy is a close second. But again, no wrong thing to order! read more

Happy Bayou Bites is one of my favorites places to chill, relax and listen to ballads in Florida. The food is awesome. Particularly the hush puppies, alligator sausage bites and catfish bites. For a change of pace and some great Cajun flavors, Happy Bayou Bites is place to be. read more

We were passing by this Cajun restaurant at lunch time, & decided to ty it out. It's kind of a fun food shack there in Dunedin. It appears they built a wooden shack perhaps around a food truck or a trailer. The decor makes you feel like you're on the bayou. The workers were very pleasant. I ordered their shrimp & grits. It tasted very good with seasonings I don't always find in dishes with the same name here in Florida. I'm guessing this was more authentic. The shrimp were plentiful & fresh & good-sized. It came with a scoop of their home made potato salad. The potato salad was decent, but not outstanding. My wife got a cup of gumbo with a muffuletta. The muffuletta she said was excellent. I could tell she was enjoying it. The pricing for the food was a little high (around $10) per order, but in Dunedin (which is a little costly) that's about right. Overall it was a nice experience to eat there. read more

We've eaten here before. Plenty of times before this time. I'm writing this because we were disappointed for the first time and didn't have time to contact directly because of our crazy work schedule during this crazy time. We took a long lunch to pick up our order today because it really sounded delicious and worth taking a long lunch for. I mean, why not? We've had nothing but great experiences in the past... We made record time from Palm Harbor and got down in 10 minutes and ordered right away. Employees were friendly and super sweet to our dog whom we brought with us. We decided on that yummy sounding special, Crawfish étouffée with hush puppies to share. A half of Muffuletta and a side of red beans and rice. We also decided on a beer to share while we waited. It smelled great all the way home. It wasn't until we got home that we stood in disappointment. The étouffée lacked any noticeable crawfish and sharing it? Well, there wasn't enough to share. The red beans and rice needed flavoring/hot sauce (which we added at home), and half of Muffuletta we didn't try yet so we can't comment on. And those hush puppies? They were the best part of our meal. After spending $30 with tip we were just left feeling like we spent too much for what we got for a work week lunch. Again, we've had a plethora of items off the menu in the past; smoked trout BLT, gator bites, tomato and cucumber salad, gumbo, soft shell crab po'boy all a handful of times when we miss New Orleans.. the étouffée we'll skip next time. read more

I'm new to Dunedin. Being from Louisiana I had to find a Cajun go to. This is it! Catfish Poboy, hush puppies and a drink. Eleven bucks. Food was spot on. Great place. Can't wait go back and try more. read more

Happy's Bayou Bites is an awesome Cajun style food truck eatery. All the seating is outside, but you are shaded by beautiful coastal oak trees. Took my kids there today and had alligator and crawfish sausage and crab cakes. Everything was delicious and perfectly seasoned. I was really impressed with the tomato and cucumber salad that came with my meal. This is a veteran owned restaurant and veterans get a discount on their meals. Plus it is very dog friendly. read more

Such a fun place with GREAT food! The owners are super nice, as well. Best of all, they have a delivery bicycle 'driver' that wears a 'Happy's Crab Hat'. It's awesome. Also, live music some days, always a good time. Great island type casual dining vibe. read more

This was our first time coming to this restaurant. My wife and I both enjoyed our meals. The portion sizes are not very large but then again, the price is right. We sat under a big tree which provided shade and kept us cool on a hot day. The place is very rustic looking but if you look behind the curtain, you see it is actually a trailer with a rustic looking shack built in the front. We will try this place again. read more

I have to eat gluten free, and when I saw that Happy's used cornflour only to fry their seafood, I HAD to try them out. Holy moly that is some good food. I had the fried oyster po boy basket (essentially a salad) with a remoulade dipping sauce. They were crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and so delicious. The shrimp salad was also delightful, fresh, and light. Perfect on a hot day. Happy's will be a very regular spot for us, especially since they're right down the street from us. Can't wait to try all of their fried offerings! My gluten free heart is truly so happy. read more

Great atmosphere, great service, and of course great food. I got the fried shrimp po boy and my gf got the blackened shrimp po boy. The location is very military friendly with service flags flying and a military discount posted. This was a for sure local spot for many vets like myself has most people I saw had military memorabilia on. It's also dog friendly which was great the one gentleman gave my dog a treat and they brought over a bowl for water so she had something to drink. The food came out great I love seeing big shrimp on a po boy not those tiny popcorn shrimp. The only thing that was a problem was the parking lot being a little small especially once lunch time came and if one person parks wrong which they did it messes up everyone else. read more

2nd visit has earned the 5 star review. Although , not my favorite Po'Boys(but still very good) in the area, I feel that they earn the extra star because of these reasons.. Side choices- they have them :-D a variety to choose from, and made in house, not just chips or fries. Specials. I think they only offer one item daily or one item and run it for the whole week, not sure , but they do offer something that's not on regular menu. I love the location. Who doesn't love downtown Dunedin? They have a cute little place right underneath a huge Oak tree. Plenty of outside colorful seating. I love to people watch. Alcohol! Whoo Hoo! Get your drink on and enjoy your favorite Po'Boy with a nice cold Brewski or Wine. Desserts. They have a couple of JJGandy items. Who doesn't love Love JJGandy? I do. I love Jodi too, the daughter . Sweetheart:-) Extra Bonus.. They're very friendly . I tried the Alligator sausage Po'Boy(sorry no pic this time)on this visit, and it was thoroughly enjoyed. The potato salad was Fabulous. When I got in the car , I was like shoot! I forgot to put hot sauce on my potato salad, but when I took my first bite , I was happy to discover that it's already spicy. I was a Happy Camper. My first visit I had an Oyster Po'Boy and I think the oysters were too well done? Idk. I might try again one day because I've seen a lot of compliments on it , but first I've got it make it down the list before I come back around. I don't know what I'm getting next , but i know it's going to involve those hush puppies everyone's talking about . read more

I am angry because Happy's is closed on Monday and I cant get any hush-puppies or Oysters for dinner. Found this place this place thanks to some pretty amazing yelpers who blazed the trail before me (Mark H). A month or so ago I was craving fried fish really bad so I asked fellow yelpers what was a good spot and they mentioned this place. First off the place is small and unassuming, I have passed by it at least ten times. If you go down Skinner and get to trail Turn around you went to far . Happy's will be on the right. Seating is outside only do come comfortable and ready to eat. Upon arrival I was like aw this cute, then the smell wafted into my nose. Silently I told myself if the food is as good as the smell I know that I've found a piece of heaven. Well hot-dog the food was better the smell- the oysters melted on my tongue, catfish perfectly done and the hush-puppies had so much flavor they make you want to slap your neighbor. I have been back three times since my first visit. I am angry today because I am craving Oyster Po'Boy like crazy. See you soon Happy, the weekend can't get here quick enough. read more

Hot damn! Good eatin' right chea! Strolling down the Pinellas trail and we see a little sign that reads, "Happy Bayou Bites 100 Yards" with an arrow pointing east down Skinner. I'm so thankful for that sign, otherwise we might not have known the place was down there. Well played, owners. We didn't realize it at first, but this is a food truck cleverly disguised as a stand alone restaurant. Absolutely brilliant, I tell ya. I felt like I was at a shabby shack in Louisiana for real. We stepped up, order some grub and patiently waited. After about 15 minutes, our food arrived piping hit! Blackened shrimp salad for La Chica and a catfish po boy for myself. I've been on a catfish tear since eating at The Breakfast Klub in Houston last month. I can't get enough of the stuff. And as in Houston, it was toothsome here. Lightly breaded, deep-fried goodness! Blackened is an option as well, but when I think catfish, I think fried, sorry health fanatics. The bread was light, fluffy and fresh. The side salad was cold, lightly oiled with nice, ripe veggies. Abita was available, but I'm not a fan of the ones they had, so I went with a Miller Lite. One thing is certain, and that is that I will be the Duke of this eatery because I plan to chew my way thru their entire menu. read more

Finally made it by to try this place out after all the great reviews! I'll start by saying the service is above and beyond what you could ever expect. They are veteran owned and offer discounts for veterans. I had the grilled shrimp po boy with a side of potato salad. My sandwich was pretty good. The potatoes in the potato salad were a little undercooked for my liking and lacked flavor so i can't say I'd recommend it. My boyfriend's catfish po boy was delicious as were the hush puppies. They have a pretty good selection of hot sauces and the pricing is on point. We will definitely be back! read more

We stopped here on a whim after some time on the beach, a family of 9 with 3 young kids. My parents lived in New Orleans for a while years ago, and we've visited new Orleans all our lives. Our standard is high for Cajun food, and Happy's genuinely did not disappoint. The kids loved their chicken fingers. The friend shrimp, blackened shrimp, and fried oyster po boys were all delicious: freshly fried perfectly tender seafood, properly dressed, on perfectly crispy-but-soft bread. The hush puppy, gumbo, and red beans & rice sides were all tasty. Nice mostly local beer selection. Service was great. We aren't easy to please and *everyone* was happy. Remembered that place from a previous visit to Dunedin, so made sure to go there again when I'm town. Great food, chill folks. It's like a little shack and after ordering at the window one can sit at their benches or on the stools. Everything is in the shade of a huge oak tree. The food is Cajun, NOLA inspired. Last time I ordered their shrimp and crab salad and my husband got the gumbo. Everything was delicious! It was nice waiting on our food and eating as they had a cool musician on site.
