Happy's Bayou Bites is a true Dunedin gem. I was leaving Honeymoon Island after spending the day with my Brother at Caladesi. Neither of us had had anything to eat yet that day. I was driving, so I told him to pull up Yelp and pick somewhere. He is in officially in charge of picking from here on out, because he picked Happy's Bayou Bites. The restaurant is like a small shack or food truck. It has outdoor seating on picnic tables and it is all underneath a beautiful, large, sprawled tree. We were hot from the beach, but we decided to try it anyhow. We were completely comfortable in the shade in June weather. It was not hot at all. We walked up to the window, ordered, and paid. The lady running the window was friendly and answered our questions. We settled for the fish spread (which was only $4!!!), cajun cheese curds, deviled crab with potato salad, and muffalletta salad with a side of tomato/ cucumber salad. It was only a little over $30 for all of that and a water bottle. They are extremely affordable. In hind sight, I should not have ordered a salad. I wish I had gone with the blackened shrimp. I saw the salad on the menu and it sounded good after a day at the beach. I was also planning on being bad and having a few cajun cheese curds with my brother. So, I ordered a salad. Palm meet face. Luckily, it was incredibly delicious. It was very fresh and flavorful. They had a vinaigrette dressing and the tapenade on the side. All of it went into the salad and I mixed my side of tomato/cucumber salad in as well. The fish spread was fresh and delicious. It had a nice smoke to it and was a generous portion for the price. It was served with crackers. I almost didn't want to put hot sauce on it because it did not need it. The cajun cheese curds were worth the grease and calories. I normally do not eat things like this. They were so light, fluffy, and well seasoned. I had a few, but I certainly wanted more. I also had a bite of the deviled crab. They were more like crab cakes than the croquettes that I typically see for deviled crab (which are Cuban style). They were well seasoned and flavorful. You could tell that the crab was fresh. We honestly did not try anything that we did not love here. I cannot wait to come back and try some more items. I highly recommend this place. My first negative review EVER. Been going weekly for years, but these new owners don't cut it. Stood at the window like an idiot for 10mins being ignored, then waited another 20mins for my simple order of Jambalaya and Gumbo that was ALREADY MADE. All they needed to do was put it on a plate. Finally went to ask for my food to go cause who can have hours long lunch on a work day? No apologies and the guy in the back was kinda dik about it. New owners made us sad that we didn't get to say bye to Happy and crew. Wandered in for fish and chips special. They honored the ten stamp card for one free fish and chips. I was worried because many places wouldn't. Ordered two to go. The ambience is the same. The hours and days, they are open more. Never had fish and chips so nothing to compare to. The fish was lightly breaded and fried. The fries were not crisp which was a bummer. Had we have sat down to eat I would have asked to have them fried a little longer. The person at the window was... how do you say? In business mode and definitely not the happy window gal we are used to. Maybe as they become accustomed to what to expect on any given day they will open up and smile a little. Waiting for some of the old specials to come back but not sure they will..l eh hem grilled cheese, catfish specials, etc... The website has not been updated as of St Patrick's Day and they don't post on Instagram. The only sightings are on Facebook. Their menu included blacken or fried shrimp, catfish, chicken, and fried oyster. They also has Alligator sausage that I have not try. After 3 pm, the Abita beer is dollar off. This restaurant close early. They don't open pass 6 pm and some of the day close at 4 pm. Today I am going to mixed and match. I ordered the half grilled shrimp and half fried oyster popboy. The Cajun spice on the grilled shrimp is good. I also has the blacken catfish. It was good blacken with fresh catfish. I like the edge of the blacken catfish. It has the most flavor. What an incredible find! This little food truck stop had the best cajun food! My husband and I both ordered the po boys (blackened shrimp and crab cakes). The blackened shrimp was cooked perfectly and flavored well. The cab cakes were the size of my fist, crispy on the outside and warm on the inside. Absolutely delicious. We went on a Saturday and there was a local artist playing guitar and singing, was a great atmosphere. Their sauces are also so good! Definitely try both of their homemade sauces, and the hush puppies! Literally, nothing could have been changed to make my meal any better. Lastly, the staff is amazing! Our food came out quickly, we were checked on multiple times, and they support first responders (love this). Oh Happy's Bayou Bites, truly my happy place. I lived in Clearwater many years ago and Happy's was always my go to place for hush puppies and Po Boys, so when I was back in town it was naturally the first place I visited. There was a live band outside at 3 in the afternoon on a Thursday and most guests (who weren't actively eating) were wearing masking and swaying along having a good time. This is an outdoor, walk up and order, sit on a bench around some trees outside kind of place. The staff was as amazing as always and it's good to know I wasn't hyping it up unnecessarily in my head over the years. We ordered some shrimp po boys to go wish hush puppies and macaroni salad. The macaroni salad wasn't the best I've ever had but the po boys and hush puppies sure were, we ate it all so fast I forgot to take pictures. Both were very good, perfect mix of spice and full of flavor! My daughter had the crab cakes which were freshly made not the frozen kind! Where do you want to be on a beautiful day except outside enjoying a good meal under the trees. And that's exactly what happened when we stopped for lunch. Happy's is located just past the fork in Main St. in Dunedin. There isn't a lot of parking space or picnic tables to eat on. They are only open four days a week. For lunch, we ordered the Shirmp Po'boy with hush puppies and the Oyster Po'boy with a side of their tomato and cucumber salad. We both decided to try their Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, too. (see pics) Both po'boys were made with some soft fresh bread. The shrimp were delicious and plentiful. The oysters were huge and tasted fresh. My only complaint was that there were several oyster shell bits in the sandwich. The gumbo had lots of goodies (sausage and chicken). It wasn't too spicy but I wish that I had ordered the bowl rather than the cup portion. The tomato and cucumber salad was OK and it reminded me of an Israeli type salad that I've had at middle eastern restaurants. The biggest surprise was their Hush Puppies. OMG! When you go, you have to order them! They are spicy nuggets of awesome! We had a wonderful experience. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was wonderful. We would definitely return. Finally I've found good Cajun food in the area. My husband and I usually pass Happy's in the evening when it's closed. Luckily, we finally made it for lunch on a weekend, and it didn't disappoint. It's basically a grounded food truck. You order at a window, and they bring you your food. There are picnic tables and a wooden bar area where patrons can sit outside (mostly shaded by a big tree). It's about a block off of the Pinellas Trail, so cyclists would probably love it for a quick bite. In addition to the entrees, they serve bottled/canned beer & wines. They have a lot of Abita beer, which I think hails from Louisiana (?) not sure. I had a catfish po'boy and my husband had an alligator sausage po'boy. Yes, if you have out of towners who want to try alligator, you can find it here. I'm not a big fan of alligator, but both were delicious (especially mine)! Their hush puppies are also really good, they do have a bit of a kick to them though. Next time I'll probably just do a basket po'boy, and skip the bread. This has to be the best hidden gem in Dunedin! Though the hours are short it's definitely a place that you need to get to on your visit to this great little town. The Louisiana bayou fare is simple and delicious. A simple selection with great taste run by friendly happy people. Even though right on the street when you sit down at one of the outdoor picnic tables you feel like you are transformed on to a Cajun Beach. The atmosphere, the music, and most of all the food. Have passed this place many times and always wanted to try it . I don't like eating outside- too hot - so I never tried it before . Today I decided to stop by and get lunch to go and bring it home . Parking is limited so ride your bike . I got there a little before opening time and was immediately greeted and given a menu . I was surprised by how cool it was under the big beautiful oak tree and was impressed but the GREAT music playing . I ordered the oyster po boy with a side of macaroni salad and 1/2 muffuletta sandwich with a cup of the gumbo . It was made to order and brought out to me in a brown paper bag that had " thank you Dan" written on it. I was impressed by the place and was hoping the food was good . So, this is going to be a gushing fanboy review because on my first visit, this place was THAT good. Happy's is situated slightly off the beaten path in Dunedin, just far enough to avoid heavy crowds but closest enough to the heart of the downtown and the bike trail to get there quickly and easily. The decor is brilliant, Happy's owners have designed a down on the bayou store front that they've simply rolled a food truck behind. Happy's is compact and food "tricky", but it maintains a legit, authentic vibe to match it's flawless Delta menu. We tried as much as we could on a first visit. The hush puppies were the best I've ever had, seriously; and the gumbo was stellar. We also tried a shrimp as well as an oyster po'boy; and were really happy with Happy's sandwiches. Our server was great, friendly and informative; and our food was prepared perfectly... the gumbo was so hot that we had to wait a minute or two to eat it, and the entire meal (though fried extensively) was as fresh and "light" as can be expected, given the style of food. Happy's has a nice selection of sodas, Abitta root beer and beers; and there was good, unique seating outdoors. Parking is limited to some extent, but Dunedin is so walkable that it doesn't matter much. You have to try this place, particularly if you're a Creole food fan. It's impossible to choose a "wrong" thing here! Every single item on the menu is 12/10. My fiancé & I stay in Dunedin for a staycation a few times each year and Happy Bayou Bites is ALWAYS the *first* place we go. Literally JUST left and couldn't wait to write a review. Was recommended this place and I thought it was so awesome that it's a small hut with outdoor seating. Got the fried oysters basket and the crawfish sausage bites. AMAZING I tell ya. Oysters were super crispy, not soggy at all, and the crawfish sausage bites tasted like a good sausage would taste lol, similar to a kielbasa but not as salty. Perfectly cooked. Homemade remoulade for the oysters was the best thing! I wanted to drink it along with the tomato and cucumber salad which was perfect to cleanse the palette. Overall, def will visit every time. What really topped off my experience was that the owner? And another person (unsure if he's related somehow) had small talk with me and I felt like a regular! I felt I was at my aunt's patio who makes amazing fried oysters. Price : crawfish sausage bites and fried oyster basket and one beer came to $20.
