Cool, tiny place to enjoy a few appetizers and some wine. The bartender who also is your server and chef patiently walked us through the menu and mentioned the "must-haves," like the pastrami sandwich. Not totally into pastrami but this one melted in your mouth and is worth it! We then went rogue from her advice and enjoyed the roasted asparagus and then a crostini with berries and pork. It's incredible how they make all these dishes with a convention oven - it was fun to watch. I enjoyed the location because of the tasty vegetable offerings (although asparagus is offered year round - something seasonal would be preferred) and the ability to try a few things. As a work-traveler it is nice to not commit to a full entree and enjoy a few things! read more

I will start off by saying I can walk here and that's awesome but it's nowhere near the top of my favorite things about this place. This little place seems very ahead itself for Modesto and I love that about it. It really gives a glimpse of the potential in this city in the most lovely, local way. All the food is good, all the beer is good all the service is good. The space is neat, the people are friendly. You get to surprise yourself by trying new things because things change a lot-how rad is that? I recommend you take the time to enjoy it here and not be in a rush. I have always wondered when I would write a review for a restaurant and give it a 5 star. This place brings a whole new level of attention, delicious food, service and atmosphere. I went here with my boyfriend for my birthday. We went for his birthday last August and I hade been craving it ever since. I was greeted by the staff with a hello birthday, all staff wishing me well. We were then seated to a room even more unique than I remember. To my dismay, the dish I was desiring was not on the menu. The waiter graciously offered to see what he could do. At the time, I had no idea but I now know that it was the owner he came over and reassured me that he would take care of it. The food was delicious. What a gem this place is! First off, you are greeted by a wonderful staff and the owner himself, Tye, working the bar/kitchen whilst simultaneously keeping up with all of the patrons' banter. The food is exceptional; you will not go wanting for flavor or variety. This is definitely a 'boutique' restaurant and bar. The interior is relatively small, but with smart usage of the space there are plenty of bar stools/tables and a back dining area. The atmosphere is lovely, rustic, and very appealing to the beer enthusiast. You'll find a dozen or so taps all pouring fresh local craft brews (when I say local, I mean relatively local -- almost all are California, some are right from Modesto!). The menu (both food and beer) change frequently, and the ingredients are top notch. To speak to that directly, we were offered the last clams in the lowboy (delicious btw, laden in garlic and butter with basil, sage, parsley). Normally I would never accept the last of any seafood ingredients simply out of paranoia and past bad experience, but all 4 popped open and were perfectly cooked and delicious. This indicated to me that this place has a high turnover of fresh ingredients, something I always look for and typically find in a real foodie's place like this. Some other menu items to note included the bone butter (of course this was amazing, dotted with roasted garlic and fresh thyme), Tye's "sorta torta" which was an explosion of peppers and pork, and the extensive savory pastry menu (we'll be back to try these as we ran out of time as the night ended). Simply put you must drop by sometime and sample the wares -- it's already my favorite spot in the Modesto area. Next up is the sister restaurant, Bauer's 66! edit: I'd like to add, Tye does all of his own meat curing and smoking here, even their own pickling. It's a true from-scratch experience. We also had a charcuterie platter I forgot to mention, smoked pork loin/pastrami/beef/various cheeses/pickles... I mean, it was just perfect. There is a reason why this place has a 5-star rating -- it's a proper eater/drinker's spot, and you can get a great bite to eat and a drink right up until 11:45 at night! read more

Food and service here was awesome! Came with my cousin an hour before closing, and Tye was very welcoming and friendly. I actually asked him to serve me something he thought I would like and he was pretty on point. The meat was perfection, especially since I also have braces. I was able to eat it easily. I had high hopes for Bauhaus, but maybe they were a bit too high... While it's a quirky and charming space--small without feeling cramped, even on the small patio out back--and the staff is friendly and attentive, the actual experience left much to be desired. The menu feels a bit lackluster and not as varied as it first appears; the cold plates and pickled plates are also topping options for the savory pastries which overall feels limited. And while the plates are indeed constructed in the manner of tapas, it lacks the traditional spirit of tapas; I'm used to tapas in the sense of a leisurely snacking experience to fuel an afternoon/evening of drinking with friends but there wasn't much about our experience that made me consider hanging out for any lengthy period of time. My other grievances are: it's a cash-only establishment (I'd be way more inclined to splurge when not sticking to a cash budget), the value of portion-to-price for plates seems unbalanced, and there's no website (it's 2017--why is there no website?--and personally, I like to have some idea of what's offered given my food restrictions). There are some positives though: the beer selection is pretty legit, the sangria is really good (fruity but not sugary sweet) and the staff are quick to resolve any issues you may have with your order. I'd be interested to check back in, in a few months from now to see if there are any changes to the menu (or maybe to their cash-only policy) but for now, once is enough. read more

I'm such a huge fan of Bauer's, that when I heard the owner opened up a tapas place, I couldn't wait to try it. Overall, the place is really cool, very cozy atmosphere, rustic with a small patio out back. The food was well prepared and very tasty, particularly the beef round, which was so tender and delicious. My gripe would be that the menu is quite limited. With small plates places, I'm used to more extensive offerings so you can try a variety of dishes. That, and the cash-only policy, is a little disappointing, but not enough to stay away. I'm looking forward to returning. read more

Wow! I just had lunch here for the first time. I ordered the chicken and beef Korean BBQ combo with a fried egg atop, to go of course. Cool characters and cool Drinks line the in-house bar made of reclaimed wood and the get down small plates are exactly what you'd expect from Tye. Great pickled, fermented, smoked items like salmon, house made bacon, and pastrami. Savory Pastry and an amazing selection vegan fare as well. Everyday is a new culinary adventure with seasonal fare. Meh. The Mother Earth was good. But have been here for about 1.5 hours now and still haven't seen our waiter. Appetizer for a party of 6 was small and basic- the asparagus had about 5 spears... the Brie bomb was burnt...the pretzels, burnt. Fingerling potatoes, burnt.. pork belly had great flavor... the pork tenderloin took literally almost an hour to arrive at the table. All these people spout off about how they are "small business owners" and whatnot yet their service and establishments are terrible and they can't keep the customers happy??? Start at the beginning and make sure the stuff works to begin with and then you won't have issues. If you can't do that then you have no business. Period. Also, our total time there was 3.5 hours. There's so much to say about Bauhaus, it's just the sweetest little spot with the sweetest most decadent little plates ever. I LOVE their veggie options (buffalo cauliflower pastry, thank me later) and their beer list changes pretty frequently. The atmosphere is probably the coolest in Modesto, I've heard it can get pretty poppin in there so I suggest not going during a dinner rush time because when it's quiet you can really chat with the servers and whoever's cookin that night.
