Chef Bauer creates tapas concoctions that are full of flavor, beautiful, and always with his personal twist that makes each bite special. Not only was he serving/bartending all the tables but he cooked and entertained all of us like it was a dinner and a show. Freaking fantastic! Tony made us feel extremely welcome and broke down the menu like it was poetry night with a jazz feel and recommend on what are the popular favorites to eat. He is one cool cat. My best friend and I showed a bit early before they opened, but the two gals were kind to let us in and sit.. also cause it was rather warm out today. But as we walked in we were greeted right away and right off I knew it was going to be a good experience here. The gals went over the menu with us and listed off the specials. Everything tastes to fresh and had so much flavor. The dish had pickled jalapeños, cucumbers, kimchi and topped off with an over easy egg with furikake sprinkled atop. I was getting major umami in this dish.. it was chefs kiss. So delicious. I also wanted to try the mushroom pastry. It was pastry dough topped with mushrooms and vegan parm. Yum!!! It was perfectly cooked the mushrooms were tender and flavorful. We finished our meals and of course had to have dessert. It was a featured pistachio semi-fredo topped with dark chocolate shavings, pistachios and a custard cream drizzle. Can I just say it was the perfect way to end the meal. Pricing was reasonable, they use fresh local ingredients which I love cause we are all about supporting local businesses. The staff were all very pleasent and the atmosphere was chill. Modesto had zero in the way of gourmet late night eats, & then he opened up this place where you can grab house made mac & cheese, lamb burgers, gluten free pasta, & vegan entrees...until midnight. Next up, tapas. Motown has a great wine bar or 2, but a tapas bar in Modesto? Negative. Until now. Tapas equals small plates, & they're meant to be shared. The idea is to order several w your partner or peeps, & nibble & nosh w some good beer & wine. Bauhaus has covered that purpose beautifully, w cured meats & savory pastries to pair w an impressive (albeit small), wine & beer list. The space is charming & rustic. Tye himself was instrumental in building this place. I found that impressive, but then was totally blown away by his wine knowledge. He waxed poetic about a Spanish red w a prowess that could rival any big city sommelier. And did I mention that he cures all the meats himself, too? He does. Yes, Tye is like the MacGyver of restaurants. The live music is a great touch & just punctuates the whole relaxing "wine hour" vibe. It is small, though. And it fills up fast. Go early. Especially if you want a spot on the patio when it's nice out. Remember that this is tapas, so small plates only. Thus, the menu is not an extensive one. But it's not supposed to be. I would have given the overall 5 stars that it deserves, however, I like bar stools & chairs w/back support so I can hang out & be comfortable after standing on my feet all day. The fan is good, but better air conditioning & ventilation would be a plus. Ok, the food.... 5 stars for food & beer choices. Had the buffalo cauliflower "pastry" and it was unique & very tastey. Absolutely love Bauhaus. All of the vegan plates are delicious. I'm always excited to see what Tye has up his sleeve, and Bauhaus is truly from top to bottom his love child. The environment has all of the original style that Tye has brought to Bauer's, and the Modesto restaurant scene for years. The woodwork is absolutely beautiful. The vibe is so relaxed, and comfortable. I'm really looking forward to hanging on the beautiful back patio this summer. I love the soft pretzel, the cauliflower buffalo pastry, and the vegan ceviche. The roasted asparagus with the vegan parmesan and truffle lime aioli is my favorite. And there are plenty of options for omnivores, I just haven't tried them. With that being said, all of my friends that eat meat have enjoyed all of their plates, every single time. The beer selection is delicious and constantly changing. The white sangria is sweet and refreshing. Tye is always so accommodating and makes my dining experience exciting. I was extremely disappointed in my service tonight. This establishment was a go to for me and my boyfriend and tonight we waited an hour to receive my food. When it was brought to the attention to my waitress, they were unapologetic and they were actually quite rude after it. We even had to wait a long time for a check. Great food and service- the tapas concept is a challenge in the US- even in our goofy California way in which we tell each other that "we know how to dine" like in Europe...we are still stuck on big portions, to-go bags and shoveling food in our mouths with the "here is your check" scenario that we all hate but experience all the time. We get you to dine and get "dashed," is the rule, even when coughing up a 20% tip for half-baked service. I have seen so many restaurants turning down the air conditioning or leaving the door open to make it cold and uncomfortable - to turn tables- it is nice to find a place that has both great food and a no-rush attitude towards staying a while and enjoying the food- Bauhaus' Beef Wellington was fantastic, crisp crust and no soggy effects going on with this dish - the sauce was surprisingly good- I don't think of the sauce as getting the crust right is hard enough- but the sauce was on point. The sirloin steak was perfectly cooked- an easy steak to mess up but it was a perfect medium rare. The octopus was good- but I am burned out on octopus/polpo style lately...but I had to try it and it was on par with anywhere else in the upper 80-90% of anyplace around- similar to this dish at Redwood Cafe- I think it is a texture thing where I want the grilled octopus to come out crisp/seared and still tender but not chewy- it's a tough one with that "cut" or piece of octopus as it generally is either overcooked or undercooked and getting the crisp with the al-dente like tenderness/texture is not an easy task- like with pasta, I kinda would leave that one up to Italians and Spaniards- but that is my take... in any case, it was good but there is room for improvement on this dish everywhere lately as it has become popular but not yet perfected- in the Italian or Spanish style of the dish. That being said, there is a lot of room for improvement on risotto everywhere- I have had a lot lately that tastes more like baby food- but they had that down to an art- the toasted bread and risotto worked perfectly... the broccolini had the char and crisp crunch that made it work perfectly with the risotto. Next, I had to try the goat curry, great stuff- lots of bones but kinda good that way where you have to go through the goat meat and slow down and enjoy the curry sauce. Lastly, the Cinamon role dessert was perfect as was the French press coffee. Service was fantastic especially as she was flying solo with a Saturday night crowd. read more

We were greeted right away so right off the bat, I knew this place was going to be great. Didn't get out server's name, so I'll call her Platinum Blonde, she was amazing! Great personality and service throughout our night. The white sangria is a must try for starters. Wish it was filled more than half a glass.. despite that. So much flavor from the white wine and grapefruits. Ahhh refreshing! Ordered the spicy Spanish shrimp , it was pretty bomb! Yes it's fun, friendly but the wait staff needs to take care of business first before they just start standing around talking to the customers who have their food and drinks !! We sat there for about 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us, then it was I'll be right with you... waited another 10 minuets. In the meantime you have wait staff standing around talking, so if it's not your table you can't get the customer their drinks?? Our knucklehead waiter finally came over and we got our drinks, BUT HE NEVER CAME back to take our food order !!! I used to come here quite a bit and i found it unique, relaxing with tasty food and delicious drinks. But when i ventured back last night the place was full of screeching 20 somethings talking at full volume. Crap - it's the invasion of the wanna be hipsters. Tacky bunch giving high fives to each other and blathering on about fascinating topics such as hangovers. And of course, lots of loud reponses to the pictures taken of them, "Oh my gawd ha ha ha ha!" I'm glad on one hand that bauhaus is drawing in more people on a Wednesday night, good for their business. But I'm part of the Mister Roger's neighborhood crowd - loving good music, mellow drinking, meaningful conversation and delicious food. Seems like i may be from a bygone era. Maybe the crowd migrated from speakeasy or Fox to bauhaus? For me this crowd ruins this sweet neighborhood bar - a crowd without diversity or class, pounding the beers. My first review was in April. Since then, Ive discovered the lovely patio, which lit up at night is the most romantic. The food is still fabulous. i check Facebook everyday to see if Tye has put up the days specials. Spo 5 months later and im still in love. I always have a great glass of wine, oysters are always yummy and try to make it when a special i havent tried yet is featured. I wish i could visit far more often. Id say close to a dozen visits in 5 months shows how much i love the place. Keep up the beautiful work Tye! My partner and I rarely go out to dinner, but when we do we always come here. Bauhaus has a new menu of cold items, which was perfect for the extremely hot weather. I got the cauliflower ceviche and my partner got the tofu vermicelli. Both items were so darn good, I've been craving them ever since. We also got their watermelon salad that they had as a special.
