The food and service are always wonderful here! This review is not about the restaurant. This is actually for the reservation system through the Yelp Guest Management system. I called the number provided here on the Yelp webpage for this restaurant. I had a phone conversation with what I now believe was an AI representative that told me that I had a reservation for a party of 6 for this coming Sunday. I felt like the phone call was a bit off, because AI can definitely give an uncanny valley feeling. Also, I knew from past experience with this restaurant that they didn't use to take reservations. I went to the restaurant's website to check it out and lo-and-behold the number is different! I called the restaurant's real number and asked about the reservation. The employee was very polite and kind and explained that they don't make reservations (first come, first serve). Thank you again to that kind employee, because that had to be a confusing call. Sorry about wasting your staffs' time with this by the way, Batter & Berries! I cannot imagine if I had brought my party of 6 to a very busy brunch spot expecting to get in right away because I thought I had booked a reservation, so I alerted the business on the call, and then I went to alert Yelp. Surely this is just a small mistake, and Yelp can get this broken AI reservation system taken down for this particular restaurant so this doesn't happen to anyone else. Surely this is not a big deal! Lol. Of course it was. I spent half-an-hour looking for ways that I could inform Yelp via customer chat, email, or even call. Nope! Yelp is now offering services to supposedly book tables for potential diners, but they still only have customer service for the businesses. I tried the one customer service number that Yelp does have (877-767-9357). I tried repeatedly to go through its AI menu. However, whenever I would answer that I was a customer and not a business, it would end the call. When I stated that I was a business just so that I could be directed to a human being, I was told by a very helpful representative that Yelp doesn't have human representatives that help non-advertising costumers or businesses. TL;DR Do not use the reservation feature on Yelp's website. They do not care if it is accurate, and there is no way to even inform Yelp of their mistake. And definitely no customer service or support for you as the person that used their broken system to make a fake reservation. But Batter & Berries itself? AWESOME!!! That 5 stars is for them. Negative 5,000 stars to Yelp for using a broken AI reservation system and having no support for when it inevitably creates problems for diners and the restaurants they want to enjoy. Edited to add: I just got done trying to fill out a correction on the phone number that Yelp has listed on this webpage for Batter & Berries as it is not correct. When I went to fill out the correction form Yelp auto-fills the information they have currently for the business listing. Would you all believe that they had the correct number for the business in the form already? So they know the correct number, but are putting their AI reservation number up instead. Why would they do that? I do not know, but I'd guess it's not for any selfless reasons. This will be the last time I use Yelp for anything, and I am looking into ways to report them for fraudulent advertisement at this point. I know it's probably silly, but changing the number to your broken AI system when you know the business' real number is a bit too much. Food is good enough and they work hard to move pretty fast. Rating is for the food I did try. Yet, ripped me off when I tried working there. They didn't pay me (Also... oddly, my start date was put as a date well over a week before I started in the system, too).And, my hours WITH pay don't show online for almost 1 month after being there. Maybe they were pissed because I left after 2 full weekend days. But, when you have 2 part foreign speaking guys(with all those short ABBREVIATED-broken word sentences AND hesitating doing the training - it doesn't work too well. You have to ask 3 questions sometimes to get a simple answer on something being learned. Sometimes they made it sound more complex or acted like they don't feel like speaking, or you have to help them along with it all. don't know if the 2 Spanish speaking men just hoped I'd quit to have someone else there (maybe male or Spanish) in my place in time or what; and so they did what had to and sometimes changed what they told me after an hour or even 4 hours. That made me really upset (but didn't say much then). One woman in charge just said they "Get things done" like that's all that matters when it's unfair to have them train. Then, they have a crabby cook that glared at me from the time he first saw me. People aren't going to "make it" and EVENTUALLY die out if foreigner -TYPES (here long or not) push us out with little tricks like..."Oh we'll make this all-american one look like she isn't catching on. Couldn't tell you how many times I tried moving faster, when we were all asked to at times, and one of those dishwashers (or even others) would poke around like daydreaming BEHIND me. I could barely turn. (People have their ways to get someone to leave if want to and it has rarely been supervisors or management that do this, that I know of.) It's also rude to speak a foreign language anyway, around other workers most of the time. Some take it like it's avoiding certain workers and an excuse to not talk to them, or something similar to whispering (not knowing most of the time what's being said). Furthermore, If a worker gets sick to their stomach with a 104 fever after eating a meal they cooked for the employees and try calling in...doesn't work. I think they KEEP the voicemail filled. Or, possibly, it's because of guests leaving voicemails at the same number. They should have a separate voicemail for employees, if so. A few mentioned they don't like to give out cell numbers for that because they worry some if people won't show for work (depending on who). But eventually that could certainly happen. Remember people...say no to migrants unless they want to be in America's CULTURE, like not trying to take over things(even subtley). And, I'd personally say no to unfair workplaces that might use friendliness as a cover with some, and then not pay, also. read more

We happened upon Batter and Berries while visiting an old neighborhood. Our initial seat was by the front door, and we were cold so the host moved us to the back, near the kitchen (clean and well organized). The biscuits and sausage gravy was flavorful but sweeter than in the south--some cornbread in the biscuits and cinnamon in the gravy? The eggs over easy were perfect and the cheesy hash, well, you'll love it. Halfway through our meal the table next to us turned out to be the owner's "desk". He mentioned that french toast was their specialty and asked why we hadn't ordered them. Then, a plate of "sangria" french toast was delivered to us on the house. We ordered and food was ready in what seemed to be 10 mins, but then again... it was 2 slices of bread and a wrap. Our server was kind and helpful. A big must when I visit Chicago. Hands down one of my favorite breakfast spots. The last time I visited, it was towards the end of lunch and it wasn't too busy. This time? There was a line out the door! But luckily I didn't wait too long - maybe 20 minutes. They show you their weekly specials by sharing photos of the dishes on their iPhone. It's nice to see exactly what each dish looks like right then and there. To start, we split the salmon croquettes, and I wasn't expecting them to taste so home-cooked - It tasted like something my mom would make. The order only comes with two, but I could have easily eaten more than that! The french toast flavors were lemon, blueberry, strawberry, and brown sugar - absolutely incredible. We are so glad we came across this place! The staff greeted us immediately and we were glad they still took us in even though they were close to closing for the day. Our server's name was Tim and they were amazing! Tim explained the menu and gave great recommendations. They were extremely kind. Our food was bomb! I got the weekly flavor of Sangria berry and my goodness the taste was soooooo good I can't even describe it in words. I also got an orange juice to drink & a side of B&B cheese hash browns that were delicious. The food came out quickly & the waiter was very helpful along with other staff. Was in the area for a doctor's appointment so we stopped in to try it out. We LOVE brunch spots! The service was great and everyone was very nice and attentive. The music was top tier because who doesn't love Chicago House music?! The specials definitely looked good but decided to try something on the menu since it was our first time. The BFF Chicken sandwich was DELICIOUS! The fried chicken was seasoned to perfection - you can tell they put love into the food. Probably one of the best fried chicken recipes I've tasted in a restaurant. It was juicy and just enough kick to pair really well with the aioli on top. It was missing pickles which I was kind of sad about but it was still amazing without them (I didn't ask because it was big enough as is and probably would have made it more difficult to eat honestly lol) and the herbed fries were very good. The fries were just crispy enough and not soggy - my [super] picky kiddo even liked the seasoning on them so that's a plus. He also loved the chocolate chip pancakes - my BF shared them as well. He ordered the breakfast sandwich with bacon and I thought it came with a side but no side arrived with our order. We were distracted by other things so didn't even ask about it and I just shared my fries with him since there was no way I could finish all that food. Portions were ok but seemed a bit pricey imo, however definitely typical of a brunch place in Chicago so no surprise there. Overall we enjoyed the food and atmosphere and if we go back we'll definitely try some specials or get other recs from the servers. I never leave reviews and honestly feel so rude leaving one but I had to share my experience. Starting to say our server was awesome, she cared a lot but clearly this was fully out of her control. So we ordered our food, waffles and hashbrowns came out but then more and more time passed and still nothing. Finally one of the two avocado toasts we ordered came out and we were informed that they did not have enough avocado to complete our second. At this point, we had been seated for about 45 minutes and my friend I were still waiting on our dishes (crab cake Benedict and a burger). Our server (reminder, very kind and attentive) was apologetic and informed us that the manager would come talk to us, and said my Benedict was coming, no mention of the burger. We then were offered a free dish as my 16 year old sisters avocado toast was out of stock, she ordered the special impossible burger. My Benedict and the regular burger were still MIA, as was the manager. The manager came around finally, shortly after my Benedict was delivered, along with a free French toast. Shortly after the impossible burger and regular burger were delivered. We got all of our missing food to go as we had been there for an hour and a half, starving. When we had gotten back home, we noticed the stark difference between the regular burger and the impossible burger. "The magic is in the butter and in the batter." It sure is, this is what makes their French toast shine! Good meat needs no mustard, good sushi no soy sauce, and great French toast no syrup. I ordered a French toast super flight, which came with five different triangles of their signature eggy bread. Each one had a different and unique sauce/batter. All were immensely tasty and delicious! The butter helped carry the flavor, and I didn't feel myself reaching for the syrup whatsoever. My only criticism is regarding the texture : in my opinion, one of the traits of truly great French toast is a lightly crisp exterior, and a soft slightly gooey interior. Interior, yes, exterior, not so much. As this came with no meat, I ordered a side of their homemade sausage patties. While I see what they were going for these didn't do it for me, as I found them small and dry. On a return visit, I went for the B&B Poutine with a shorty stack of pancakes on the side. The poutine is where I have to become a purist - shredded cheddar... really? Putting that to the side, the meat was tender and flavorful, and the gravy was bursting with flavor. The fries were cooked nicely also. Would I call this a poutine, perhaps not. However, it still ended up a tasty and unique dish. The pancakes suffer from the inverse of the French toast. They have some crispness on the exterior, but not enough softness and fluffiness inside. An area where Batter & Berries excels is their service. It has been consistently excellent! It is friendly, welcoming, and surprisingly speedy, even if the there's a line out the door. Finally, there is the question of value: B&B is on the expensive side. While the quality is there, it's still a little short of mind-blowing. If you choose to go (and you should), expect a wait - and out your name on the list via Yelp beforehand. For the experience, expect quality and creativity, though some of the execution might be a little imperfect. For the price, it's not highly overpriced, but not an everyday or every week indulgence. read more

Such a fun place and such delicious food! To start, know this place can get loud, but it's a happy kind of loud, because everyone is enjoying such amazing food! The staff are all quick and efficient, and genuinely care about your experience. I love waffles but can also be picky about them. Most places cover mediocre waffles with fruit and figure "Good enough!" But the waffles here are delicious all by themselves, even without butter or syrup. Great coffee too. We came here on a Sunday morning around 9:30am. There was parking outside and kids were welcomed. This place is well known and people rave about it, I didn't get that from my experience. Overall when we got there three of us were there and we were waiting on a 4th. They said we couldn't sit until the 4th arrived and we complied and then a moment later without our 4th they sat us. Which was nice. They say they have world famous French Toast, not one of us got them and by the smell of them from other tables it's recommended. I got a breakfast sandwich on whole grain bread, over easy eggs, and bacon. They only have Chilula or a chilula home sauce. Not preferred. They have chocolate chip pancakes, which my kid got, and my partner got the catfish special. He didn't love it but said it was "good". The catfish executive did cost $30. This place was highly recommended by my friend. They did not disappoint. My fish was super fresh. One friend had the French toast flight and the other had the lemon French toast. They were so good! Very popular for good reason! Service and food is great, amazing portion for pricing and staff is so friendly. No reservations but the wait was quick on a Saturday morning. As we arrived, we were a bit thrown off by the dirty awning as we got here right at 8, but we were surprised and impressed with how quickly and how many people started flowing in. Clearly this is a well-loved spot! Our server was lovely and we were pleased that she suggested we get the half-order of the french toasts we wanted. The food came quickly and was yummy. The cheesy hashbrowns were my favorite; I personally thought the french toasts were a little too sweet but I can see why people would like them. My main and only complaint is that the music was so loud, it made it hard to have a conversation. read more
