Oh gosh. I ordered so much food and the servers balked at me but I had to try everything!! The pan con tomate is so simple but damn good, especially if you get it with the chorizo which comes lit in fire as it comes to the table. The zucchini carpaccio is delightfully light with a little Asian flair. The pork baos are a little too rich if you're not sharing with friends. The sardines are delicious as well. Came across this hidden gem while I was walking the narrow hidden streets in Barcelona and needed to take a little rest. It was an unassuming place in front of Santa Maria church which I probably would have missed if I hadn't gotten lost. But what a surprise it was. The staff were very welcoming and made several suggestions that were absolutely delicious. The wine was also very good. Service was quick but not rushed. Ambiance was great with a local feel to it. Hotel Art recommended a couple local spots and I ultimately chose Bastaix due to their growing reviews. I ordered the meagre ceviche with tiger milk and sweet potato purée, roasted eggplant with tahini yogurt, feta cheese za'atar and pomegranates, and Galician style octopus with a glass of rosé. Everything was delicious but my favorite dish was the ceviche! It was fresh, tasty, and had a spicy kick from the abundance of red onions. The eggplant was a close second as I had never had anything like it. Portions are generous so I barely made it to the 3rd dish. The ambiance is cozy, warm, and traditional tucked away in charming El Borne. If you're planning to come here during prime time (8:00pm), make sure to make reservations. read more

Visited this wonderful tapas bar during an early summer trip to Barcelona, Spain. Our hotel recommended it - it was not close to the hotel, as it was a personal recommendation which made it nice. First, it was not easy for us to find. It was tucked away in a near area with lots of shops, restaurants, and bars near the Santa Maria Del Mar Church. We did make a reservation, which is highly recommend. We had several tapas including salmon sashimi, truffled eggs with potatoes and chorizo, burrata with tomato jam, chicken wings, silky smooth Iberico ham, simple yet addicting tomato bread (rub garlic on bread, run fresh tomato on it, drizzle with olive oil and sea salt), octopus tacos, and tuna tataki. Aperol spritzes were our beverage of choice. All of the dishes were excellent - creative, small portions yet enough to enjoy and savor. We could have tried everything on the menu if we had room - it was such a great selection. Service was good, but it was really busy and our server was tending to several tables including. A large party that sat midway through our meal. We were seated downstairs, but they have some tables on the main floor along with bar seating. We would definitely return to Bastaix! Bastaix means "porter" in Catalan and is named after the workers who carried stones on their backs from Montjuïc to build the Santa Maria del Mar Church right near the restaurant (http://www.flickriver.com/photos/tags/bastaix/interesting/). The restaurant is a retro multi-level space (we ate in the basement dining area) with plenty exposed brick and ancient building charm. It's definitely a bit off the beaten path and we ended up here while getting lost trying to find another tapas bar (http://www.yelp.com/biz/cal-pep-barcelona) in the Gothic Quarter, but we were definitely happy with what we found. All our dishes were delicious from the crisp flatbread topped with sardines, to the Spanish sausages, to the assorted cheeses. We ordered way too much food and threw them for a loop when we asked for our leftovers to go. There was much hushed talking and pointing and eventually they decided on wrapping stuff in aluminum foil. I guess it isn't that common a request? And they have a pretty good wine list compared to a lot of the restaurants we visited in Spain. read more

Cheese melted in the oven, drizzled with olive oil and served with hot crunchy bread. Nothing more satisfying with a red. What a find. We were heading to another tapas restaurant in the Borne area when we found out it was closed due to vacation. We decided to give this place a try as it was close by and got good reviews on Yelp. We were not disappointed. The staff was friendly and very helpful in recommending different choices. Their specialties are seafood tapas and we had an awesome meagre tiradito where the raw meagre was sliced thin and served with a passion fruit citrus sauce. The tuna tataki was equally good. The waiter also recommended the Galician style octopus, a smoked cod on pureed eggplant, and grilled prawns which were also very good. All in all, everything we ordered was prepared with fresh ingredients and excellent flavor. Excellent fresh tapas - they don't have them sitting on the counter, most are made in front of you in the small open kitchen. The chef grabs fresh produce right from the open shelves in the bar. We were blown away by the taste and quality of the ceviche, carpaccio, and even the standard patatas bravas and tomato bread. And they start serving food again at 6:00 (at least on Wendesday when we went), so if you're hungry before most other tapas joints open, go here! They were all very friendly too. read more

We stumbled onto this cozy little tapas bar on our first night in Barcelona. The main eating area seems to be in a basement wine cellar, which is appropriate considering the amazing wine selections offered here. Everything we ate was delicious and the portions were large. The staff couldn't be more helpful. We ordered a cheese plate and asked about the different cheeses on it. All we really wanted was to know the names of each cheese, but they did their best to give us a detailed explanation about each cheese and its origins. My boyfriend and I LOVE Bastaix! We were in Spain this past week and stumbled upon this little gem hidden in a nook in El Born. It's very chill and unassuming, and has such great vibes. The people who work here are very welcoming and nice, the food? Even better. We had 5 nights in Barcelona and we liked Bastaix so much, we went back a second time. We had (both times), the olives, manchego, pan con tomate (you make it yourself which seems weird at first, but it's actually awesome!), one of the meat plates (I think Iberian Jamon), and two of the warm toasts: the warm brie one (our favorite!) and the one with anchovies and roasted red peppers. My boyfriend and I stumbled into this place after a full day of walking. We didn't have a reservation but the hostess kindly let us know it would be a 10 mins or so wait. We ordered wine and stood outside by the window for a table. We eventually go seated at the bar at the window (although I wish we waited for a table). The food was great, we had the prawns, potatas, large olives, tomato bread. After trying potatas bravas from all the different places, we loved the ones here. I attended Mobile World Congress and stumbled upon this place. I liked what the exterior looked like so I checked online and sure enough the reviews warranted a try. From the moment we opened the door there was a great aroma of food. We proceeded downstairs and 3 of us enjoyed a great tapas meal. Some things about Barcelona: It is very hard to find a good restaurant open before 8PM. We arrived around 7PM and this place was open. It was empty when we arrived and standing room only when we left. Another thing - it is sometimes hard to find English speaking waiters. At this restaurant everyone was perfectly fluent and even so fluent they could joke with us in English. This made us feel very relaxed. The prices were very reasonable. For 3 people we shared 2 bottles of wine, tons of tapas and some dessert. The whole bill was around 100 euros. Clearly a fair deal. Highly recommended. I will return again next year during MWC. read more
