After hours of wandering La Rambla and sampling a little bit of everything at the surrounding markets, my gluttonous self decided I was still hungry and found this quiet tapas bar to take a little breather at. Given its proximity to the main street, I was surprised at how peaceful it was when I came in around 9pm - just a few tables filled and they were finishing up. But no matter, I perched myself at the bar and promptly started off with a glass of red and the gorgonzola and pear croquettes. They were a little too salty and cheesy and mushy for my taste, but still had good flavor. Next came their patatas bravas, drizzled over with mayonnaise and some sauce of paprika/chile/oil. It was DELICIOUS. That dish was definitely meant to be shared but I downed the whole thing myself. Lastly came a Iberian ham flatbread with brie and shoestring fries - a little more basic but still pretty good. Stuffed at this point, and with the bartender/waitress totally judging me on the side for how much I was eating (who doesn't gorge themselves when on vacation in a foreign country? Judge on, bartender, I certainly have no regrets), I finally got the bill and split. All in all, a solid dinner with plenty of inexpensive wine to boot. If you're walking La Rambla or are in the area, I highly recommend this place - it's quiet enough that you wouldn't think it's right off tourist central, it has great food, and it's very reasonably priced. read more

A nice little restaurant away from the touristy areas down an alley in the middle of La Ramblas. There were just a few small groups eating in here, but its a nicely kept secret. The service was impeccable and the food was above and beyond what we expected. We ordered a variety of croquettes, paella, grilled octopus with potatoes, duck confit and was recommended to get the tomato bread, which we didn't regret. All the food came out nicely paced. First the croquettes, the goat cheese one was my absolute favorite. Then came the octopus and lemme tell you... we cleaned this dish! It was just as good as Greece. So flavorful and tender. I'm still thinking of this dish! Then the seafood paella came out and my husband is not a fan of paella in Europe because he doesn't like al dente cooked rice. But this place.. the rice was fluffy and fully cooked just the way he likes it. It had tons of seafood buried within it and was super flavorful. We topped off our dinner with Cream Catalana and was given two glasses of complimentary champagne!! First day in Barcelona and decided to try Tabarlot based on Yelp reviews! The food was great, but the staff were amazing. At a table close to ours, a medical emergency occurred. The staff reacted professionally and calmly. What could have become a truly devastating evening for everyone was possibly quite literally saved by the staff intervening when they did. While the food is definitely worth the visit, we could not let this experience go by without mentioning it. We had mushrooms with Iberian ham sauce (so delicious), deep fried artichoke hearts, and croquettes as tapas. For mains, we had lamb ribs,langostini paella, lobster paella and grilled salmon. Come to this place if you want homeless people to stick their hands in your food and be charged for it by the restaurant! My experience here was horrific! I came here during my last day in Barcelona because of the great reviews, but the service was terrible. We were happily eating the food we ordered when a homeless man entered the restaurant, came to our table and placed his hands in our food and began eating it. The employees didn't immediately react even though they witnessed it. They did kick him out and asked us if we needed anything like some water so we agreed. We lost our appetite and asked for the check. They were charging us for the food that the homeless man grabbed even though we had barely touched it AND the water they kindly offered after the incident! A very friendly (English speaking) tapas bar that has soulful atmosphere and a nice modern industrial aesthetic to it. The glow of lights uplighting behind a nice looking bar that has sime snack food laid out behind glass displays. The staff were passionate about both the food and the music. (janis joplin featured heavily) which only made me enjoy the food even more. As for the food! Fresh, tasty, varied mix of delicious fish/meat dishes and side plates and platters of tgings like sliders etc... Ill add descriptions to the numerous photos i took. A #NomadCEO Review Upon entering, the staff are bilingual and seem to be very skilled at greeting people in their native language within a few seconds of inspection! Tabarlot has refreshingly fast wifi (30mb+) which is much harder to find in Barcelona than it should be. There are one or two power outlets, and the staff seem quite OK with you using them. With a simple and great value breakfast menu, it's extremely friendly for English travellers and a good spot to get a few hours work done with only a few euros outlay. The food portions are all quite small, but Tabarlot seems to favour higher quality ingredients while keeping their prices reasonable with smaller portions. Coffee is rich and full bodied. The most substantial food you'll find here is a hamburger or bocadilla (a sub sandwich). Overall, a great bar/coffee shop that manages to maintain a traditional and high quality Spanish menu, while providing an upmarket decor and tourist friendly service that makes you feel more than comfortable to sit and get some work done. read more

I could easily give this place five stars just for how great the mushrooms in ham sauce were. It's been 12 hours and I'm still thinking about them. We went for a tapas dinner - probably the nicest meal I've had during my stay in Barcelona. Reasonably priced too - we got 9 dishes and a jug of sangria, came to €13 each between four of us. Looking for somewhere easy, we decided to head back towards the more touristy area and came across Tabarlot which looking inviting and relatively calm. We started out looking for something quick but ended up enjoying a very nice, leisurely meal and one too many cocktail. The place was very clean and welcoming and the service friendly enough considering we only spoke English. A couple notes for those coming here: the "grandmas bomb" was delicious. It's basically Shepard's Pie, in a ball, then fried. The foie gras bonbons were in fact a cold, sweet dish; they weren't bad but not what I'd expected either. In a side street of the Rambla is this little place. The interior is nice with empty cans and fake hams hanging off the veiling. The staff is friendly and sort of alternative. I had a nice glass of red wine and a beer. We tried some tapas, starting with croquettes ham and leeks. Good, but not special. The batatas bravas were not great either, fatty and too much salt. We also tried foi gras bonbons. Tasty, but so Sweet, i could not taste the foie gras. We had to wait long for the grilled octopus, but it was great! Sweet and grilly. Terrific spot with many positives: 1. Service is very prompt but respectful. It is somewhere between the laid back Spanish version (of which I am a fan) and the American version of quick turn the table with these folks much closer to the more civil Spanish version of service. 2. The food is excellent. Order carefully since the portions are generous. 3. This place was super close to where I was staying, so I dropped in before going to bed to have one last bite. I tried the creme brulee, which was made well with a crackly top and sweet custard within. The server was really friendly and funny, and it felt super cozy inside as well. I discovered this great Tapas Bar just 50 meters off Las Ramblas. I was in my way back to my hotel. It is a great Tapas Bar that is a welcome change from some of the expensive eateries under tents at Las Ramblaa. Tabarlot has quality food and great service. It is one of those places you value as a true find. I think you know what I mean because we have all have our "special" places. Try it. You will love it. I had the Spanish Olive sampler and they were so good with seeds and all. You know seeds are virtually non existent in USA due to our lawyer friends. Olive=seed= duhhhh. Anyway, you'll love it. I did not just eat olives, just happen to be an olive freak. Shrimp with garlic was outstanding. The place was as to be expected, not too big inside (but what place really is big in europe, lol) but full of character. Jamon legs hanging from the ceiling alongside empty tomato cans. Certainly caught my interest. As we would come to find out, the staff was professional, not overbearing or fake. Very much a standard we found in many European restaurants. They helped with menu choices and answered questions. We ordered red wine from the Rioja region, which I love Spanish wine...kind of hard to screw up. Then we started off with Panko brie with fig marmalade and Grandma's bomb. Brie cheese with a panko crust, talk about yummy...Then comes the fig marmalade...totally awesome. Next we have Grandma's bomb, which simply explained is a potato ball stuffed tasty sausage meat. Reminded me of the Papa relleno from my culture's menu. It was totally delicious. Next ordered was the Catalan sausage with white beans, romesco and the Crispy Duck Cannelone. The sausage was fantastic and went well with the beans and romesco. Let me say the duck did not look too impressive...but the taste blew me away. Exploding with rich duck flavor complimented by a tasty parmesan sauce with yummy duck fat sweetness made me want more of that. Talk about making a great first impression. Totally had to try one of the desserts. We selected the Crem Brulee....well admittedly their version of one. We came here rather groggy and jet lagged on our first night in Barcelona. It ended up being the perfect place for us to relax, have a couple glasses of wine and try an assortment of delicious tapas. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the staff were attentive but not overbearing. We had some pan con tomate, panko crusted brie drizzeled in honey, a "grandma's bomb", the sausage and white beans and the crispy duck cannalone. Though everything was very simple, it was delicious. The pan con tomate was crispy, drizzeled in olive oil and herbs, and coated in fresh tomato - light, but very flavorful. Of course the fried brie was incredible, and grandma's bomb was a savory mix of fried mashed potato stuffed with what looked and tasted like ground beef and tomato. The two more "main" dishes - the sausage and the duck - were also excellent. The sausage was really good - tender, rich and cooked perfectly while its accompaniments - herbed white beans and a red pepper romesco were light and fresh, the perfect counterbalance to the pork. The duck cannelone was small - just the cannalone with no sides - and not made with pasta (it seemed more like a phyllo dough), but it was very, very good. Crispy phyllo, rich crispy duck and a light but flavorful parmesan cream sauce made for an excellent dish. Overall, we were super happy with this place - the food was excellent, the portions fair (not teeny tiny, but not huge), and the prices very reasonable. We went to Tabarlot a few hours ago, on our first night in Barcelona, and we couldn't have been any happier! Excellent food and service, plus the restaurant is trendy and beautiful. We came here on my husband's birthday with our family (a group of 5) and enjoyed eating some of their tapas: breaded artichokes, queso fundido, mushrooms with jamon serrano, breaded brie with jam, croquetas de jamon, and calamares (calamari) a la andaluza. My husband and son also ordered a bocadillo (sub/baguette) with brie and jamon serrano and they loved it. Their pan con tomate (bread with tomate) that they served before our tapas, was excellent as well. We also ordered a pitcher of sangria and I have to say it is one the the best I have ever had.
