Got the banana royale with coffee ice cream. The coffee ice cream flavor was suprisingly underwhelming. When I first tasted it I thought they got my order wrong and then just realized it was very weak coffee flavoring. Honestly not the best ice cream Ive ever had. Very basic and humdrum. The bannanas were extremely frezh though and I was pleased with the large quantity they put in. But I honestly wouldnt go again. Dairy queen is better cold stones is waaaay better. It was just ok.. I love Baskin Robins! Me and my Grandma come here almost weekly! The staff is very friendly and we have gotten to know them over the years. Plus, who doesn't love their flavors?! Well, hmmm, Heather. I have to say that your version of the story sounds reasonable. And if I weren't a satisfied -- thus frequent and longtime -- customer, I might steer clear of this place, based on your comments. But as with most stories, there are two sides. As a parent, I understand: when a kid has to "go," sooner is better than later. But the simple truth is that the La Mesa Baskin-Robbins has no public bathroom. If you have an issue with that policy, that's fair. Take it up with the government agency that legislates it. But rather than accept the answer you got, you became argumentative. Then you left -- and came back! At that point, your son had already used the bathroom at the 7-11 across the street (not a block away). Why, if you were so annoyed, would you even come back? It couldn't be because you'd promised your kids ice cream, because you bought them some at 7-11, which they then ate in the Baskin-Robbins store, along with the Baskin-Robbins ice cream you'd bought. It seems that the only reason you came back was to rant. And rant you did. If you'd confined your argument to the policy, that would have been fine. But you took it to a personal level, accusing the woman helping you (who is an owner/manager) of being a minimum-wage employee. True or not, how is that relevant? Is that what you're teaching your children -- that respect is to be given according to the job a person holds or the wage he or she earns? To make sure your lesson would stick with your sons, you carried it further. They made a mess. They're kids, so a mess is to be expected. What wasn't "expected" was you, the parent, saying, "Don't worry about your mess. That girl who makes minimum wage will clean it up. That's her job." What was further unexpected, and kind of shocking, actually, was your making the mess bigger by grabbing napkins and baby wipes and smearing the ice cream all over the table and chairs -- and then leaving the pile of paper -- presumably to be cleaned up by a "minimum wage" employee. It's interesting that you mention the need to "teach" your children, in light of the lesson you gave that day. Better to help your sons become respectful citizens. Citizens who, when confronted with an answer they don't like, will be able to discuss it and maybe even accept it; believing you're right doesn't make it so. And may your sons also learn to use words in a constructive way instead of to veil hostility or to denigrate, as you did when you referred to a grown woman as a "narrow-minded little girl" who earns "minimum wage" as an "ice cream scooper." Please don't write back in an attempt to deny what I've said. There were plenty of people in the store who witnessed -- and commented on -- your behavior. read more

We stopped by to get some home ice cream to take home, seeing as the store was open. The 2 of us went in wearing masks & gloves, a necessary precaution in this time of Covid-19, although no other customers/clerks were masked up. There were already 5 customers & 2 clerks (or so we thought) in the store. We came in last & stood on the (1 of 7 or so) "X" marks on the floor, b\c social distancing, you know. We stood there for about a FULL MINUTE when suddenly this shrill harpy emerged from the back & came out & told us we had to wait outside. So, we went outside. Realizing the harpy assumed WE were sick b\c of the masks & that is why she wanted US to be outside, I went back in, SANS (that means without) mask & voiced loudly that WE were not sick & we were wearing masks b/c no one else in that store was or taking this shit seriously. Harpy yells that only 10 people can be in the store at one time. Well, this was news to us. With us (2) in the store, that would have made 10. But the other 2 clerks there NEVER mentioned the 10-people rule, NOR WAS THERE ANYTHING POSTED ON THE FRONT DOOR!!! Just Harpy yelling about 10 people. HAD THERE BEEN A SIGN WE WOULD HAVE WAITED OUR TURN OUTSIDE. But no, Harpy saw our masks & was suddenly 'concerned' about the number of people. Yeah, right. Harpy needs to train her people better on how to count to 10 & advise customers RIGHT WHEN THEY WALK IN. Or learn how to write & TAPE A SIGN TO THE FRONT DOOR. And Harpy needs to learn some f*cking manners. Side note: if we really ARE sick, we wouldn't be going outside.....duh. Never had a problem with this store until now. We will never go back to this location as I don't want a side order of fear & ignorance. read more

Really? I paid $30 for a cake out of the freezer- okay it was a beautiful cake but not custom. Couldn't find one that was prepared with the ice cream I knew my dad liked, but I was happy to have the cake and the server behind the counter asked if I wanted anything written on it and I said, "wow, that would be fabulous!" I said I would love to have "happy birthday, grandpa!" In less than a minute the cake was ready to go. I glanced at my receipt on the way to my dads and noticed that I was charged a $3 design charge! I remember when this was a complimentary service- had I known I would be charged $3 I would have complained about the beige/green color of the iced writing and the fact that I was driving to alpine with an ice cream cake that was NOT packed in dry ice that also used to be standard customer service. I'm surprised they didn't offer me a birthday candle then charge me for that w/out telling me. Does anybody simply do anything extra just because it's good customer service? My family has been going to this ice cream parlor for 16 years! First time I've felt taken advantage of. read more

I would have given a 5 star rating, but the staff always has a wierd edge when you ask for more than 3 samples as if your wasting their time and trying to scam the system. We love this place for an after school treat. I just think they need to be more freindly. read more

Purely and utterly, distraught, 32 flavors at this place, 32!!! I grew up with the morals and ethics of an ice cream store with 31 flavors and they are changing it up on me like that, hence the name "31 flavors." Isn't that the whole point of BR was the hidden 31 in it, have you no heart??? I guess not.. might as well change the name to B2 because at least the 3 will still remain you filthy liars. On this past Saturday, around 4PM, I visited this location. I was hosting an ice cream social and they were out of the pre-packed Jamoca almond fudge, and so the girl offers to hand-scoop the flavor and I mid-way I ask if she will honor the price of the pre-packaged, since they're out and she says no. This is annoying, when it came time to get the next order of ice cream I wanted to make sure that I wasn't spending another 8 dollars, so I asked how to get 4 scoops but not pay for the large container, since I was asking for less ice cream? So, she says sure. When she rings me up the price is over 16 dollars and when I ask her why I paid as much as the hand-scooped she just says, 'oh.' Then, I ask her to weigh it, and she says, "it's almost as much" meaning, almost as much as the hand-scooped that she didn't honor for being sold-out of the pre-packaged ice cream. So, I spent over 16 dollars for 2 containers of ice cream, and the girl is nice but doesn't understand math and apparently, this B&R doesn't honor the pre-packaged price when they don't have it in the freezer to purchase. read more

I brought my twins there after school for a treat. After ordering and receiving one of our cones, one of my boys, who just turned 4 years old, (not an age known for their strong bladder or ability to "hold it") was doing the pee-pee dance. I asked the girl behind the counter if he could use the rest room. That is when I was informed, in a less than nice way, that the bathroom is not for customers. . . only employees are allowed to use the bathroom and I should walk my kids a block away to 7-11 to use their rest room. Instead of having my kid pee on their floor, I took them to the 7-11. In all honesty, I wasn't going to return (partially because of the potty policy and partially because of the attitude of the employee) but my son really wanted the ice cream cone that he picked out. Anyway, I understand that the no customers using the potty may be a policy and that the girl behind the counter may have only been doing what she had been instructed to do, so we went back to get our ice cream. After returning from our 7-11 potty run, I requested a phone number for the corporate office so that I could talk to someone about a supposedly kid friendly business making it's patrons walk a block away to use the bathroom and to see if maybe I could help foster a change in the policy . The next thing that I know, the ice cream scooper, who identified herself as Michelle, is raising her voice at me (not quite yelling, but not talking and definitely not being nice) "well, you can pitch a fit all you want, but it's not going to change anything". Really.....WOW. I like to teach my children that they should be advocates for what they believe is right and that they should try to be part of the change that they want to see in the world, even if it is a small change (like customers being able to use the bathroom). All that l can say to that narrow minded little girl is that at one time, women couldn't vote and we had racial segregation. Thank goodness that people "pitched a fit" and stood up for what they believed in. read more
