This Basil location is consistently good, but not as good as downtown. I do prefer the physical restaurant in Mount Pleasant as it is much more spacious and has separate rooms for entertaining. My main reason for not giving this location another star is the service. It does not live up to what I expect from the Basil reputation unfortunately. It is always slow and there are always issues. I went with a group of four women from work most recently to take advantage of the Restaurant Week specials. We would have gone downtown, but they did not take reservations but Mt P does. Big win. We started off with the Basil rolls, egg rolls, and wontons. I have always loved the Basil rolls, but will consider getting the wontons instead next time because they were so delicious. We got like five in the app, so it was perfect for sharing. For my entree, I got the Pad Woon Sen (with chicken), as it is my favorite noodle dish here. Everyone was very happy with the quality of food, but service was lacking. It always seems like either they are very overwhelmed and don't have enough time and dedication to us, or they are too new and don't yet know exactly what they need to do. For example, one of my co-workers got a chinese dish that comes with rice, but the server didn't realize she needed to provide it separately so we had to ask. I would have liked to use chopsticks, but the server never offered and I didn't see her to ask. The biggest asset in addition to the food is the venue. It is absolutely beautiful in my opinion. The entrance has bamboo canes and a giant buddha statue. Lighting is just right. Table arrangement is good too. You don't feel like you are sitting on top of your neighbors. Parking is on the street in the shopping centre, but usually you don't have to go too far. If you're in Mount Pleasant, I would suggest you try it out, but just know that the service might not be stellar. They are friendly, just somewhat slow. Enjoy! read more

Fresh, delicious Asian food is a bit like trapping a unicorn in the Mount Pleasant area, but Basil never disappoints. I never get tired of the dishes here. My family often shares multiple dishes and I don't believe I've ever had a disappointing dish in our many, many visits. Due to not liking bell peppers, I requested if there was something else i could get.. i was told i could substitute for a dollar. Really...it was that big of a deal to switch broccoli? Things I love about Basil in MtP: The top deck patio overlooking the water. The curry. The decor and atmosphere. And their happy hour is not too shabby. Typically I much prefer the vibe of downtown restaurants over those in the 'burbs, but in this case I actually prefer Basil's Mt Pleasant spot to their King St location. It's not cramped and I love the outdoor spaces. Prices always seem to jab me in the gut, most especially at dinner because I have a hard time spending $15 (give or take) for fried rice or a noodle dish when I could just as easily order takeout from a decent Chinese restaurant. But, the quality at Basil is great, as is the presentation. And the atmosphere helps justify some of that cost. Plus, as much as I have tried, I just can't seem to make a good curry of my own. So I'm willing to spend the money and enjoy myself! Current favorite dishes: Green curry, red curry and/or Pad Woon Sen. I'm a sucker for cellophane noodles! WE LOVE BASIL! I had a friend in town and we had such a blast. We started off with drinks out on the deck, it was a chilly night but they had the heaters going. Perfect start! We made our way downstairs for dinner and were greeted by a very friendly waitress. She knew all about the beer and guided us in the right direction. The Brune....Oh the brune...it was love at first sip. Highly recommend it! For apps we got the coconut soup (a MUST) and steamed dumplings. Both very good. Wish they gave you a few more dumplings though. The soup is the best soup ive had out, hands down. For dinner my buddy and I split the Duck and Pad Thai noodle dishes. The duck was AMAZING. I love Thai food so my boyfriend and I usually come here for a date night about 2-3 times a month. Basil has great deals for wine during happy hour. The bartenders are great and they will make sure that you get your bang for your buck for happy hour drinks. Service is great here but we've had both good and bad experiences with Basil regarding their food. So I highly recommend their tum yum soup with shrimp. That never fails. I cannot say the same about their pad Thai. I love pad Thai and will usually order it whenever we go to a Thai restaurant. I can say basil is not consistent with the dish. A few weeks ago, my boyfriend had a work meeting there and ordered their pad Thai. He said it was amazing and brought it home for me to have the leftovers. This time when we were there, they made our pad Thai too runny. It looked like it was drenched in fish sauce. Don't get me mistaken, I'm Vietnamese so I love fish sauce but it was very strong. What a find! We initially came for dining In their dining room. Party of four. Approached the maître d' and he asked if we were here for happy hour or dinner. We're just trying to eat our way through all of the Thai restaurant this city has to offer. Since we had already tried Basil on King Street, we decided to give its second location in Mount Pleasant a try for comparison. Just a heads up! If you're not in the Mount Pleasant area, this one will be a bit out of the way for you. My husband ordered the Pad See-Eu, I ordered the Green Curry, and we shared the Basil Pork. What surprised me about Basil, that I did not mention in the downtown location review, is that you're not asked the spice level you prefer for your dish(was). However, dishes with an asterisk next to them denote spicy, and you'll just have to hope that your cook/chef can eyeball just the right amount of mild or medium spicy for you. If you're concerned about the level of spiciness, consult with your server. The Basil Pork was really tasty, and thank goodness the level of spicy was just right. There was plenty of fresh bell peppers and onions to accompany the pork that we ended up having some leftovers to take home with us. My husband preferred Charleston Basil's Pad See-Eu. Although the beef was cooked well, he felt it lacked flavor. All of the sauce collected at the bottom, so in order to get some flavor onto the meat we would periodically stir all the ingredients to get the sauce onto the noodles, broccoli, and meat. The green curry was decent but definitely not the best in town. The curry was definitely spicier than the other two dishes we had ordered, so it caught me off guard at the beginning. If I had to rate the spicy level of each dish, it would be the following: Basil Pork - Mild Spicy Pad See-Eu - Mild Spicy Green Curry - Medium Spicy to Very Spicy If you're looking for a stylish and trendy Thai spot for date night, this place is a winner! We ordered the chefs special, red curry duck. Vegetables were mushy, curry sauce was thin and bland, duck was well cooked, but not well trimmed. (Lots of fat and gristle) Som tum was ordered "thai hot" and showed up mild. I asked the waitress for some thai chilis on the side. I received ground chili flake, which is fine, but not what I ordered, and some mild pickled jalapeños. WTF are pickled jalapeños doing in a "Thai" restaraunt ? This Basil location is unquestionably inferior to their downtown location. That being said, it is well suited for Mt. Pleasant in comparison: higher prices, smaller portions, and worse service...but it's got to be good because it's in Mt. P and everyone is going there, RIGHT? Service here is generally not so good. Not terrible, but definitely not good considering the price point. The hostesses at the front are always acting overwhelmed, despite the fact that there are usually three of them and only a couple of people waiting. The food is definitely made with the same recipes as the downtown location, however, it feels more mass-produced and made with less care here, and the portion sizes are slightly smaller. The only possible advantage this location has is the fact that they take reservations. The downtown location does not; but it is well worth the wait. The only reason we ever go to the Seaside Farms Basil is because we have some friends who live nearby. I give two stars because I have high expectations for Basil; and this particular location certainly lets me down every time. read more

The fried wontons are really good too for an appetizer! I have tried the sweet and sour chicken and was not crazy about that.
