I've been going to basil restaurants in Charlotte and downtown Charleston for 30 years the time may not be exact. We've been in Mount Pleasant for 3 1/2 years and hadn't gone. I suggested we try it. We made our 715 reservation. It was very busy at that time. When we entered, the restaurant seemed much larger, and I believe nicer than the older coast restaurant downtown. It wasn't long before we proceeded. We ordered drinks that came fairly quickly as that our appetizers. We ordered the basil roll. As well as the nam sod pork, lettuce, wraps. We thought the rolls were tasty, especially the dipping sauce. The lettuce wraps I felt were too acidity and missing other flavors. For the main dish, my wife ordered shrimp pad Thai. I ordered the basil duck. I hadn't had this in a long time and I thought it was very good. We felt my wife's pad. Thai was too acidity. Didn't have enough peanuts and was missing other flavors. It could've used more fish or soy sauce. Our service was very good. They were very friendly and prompt. Overall, it was good, but not as good as the other establishments in Charlotte or when it was downtown. If the service and atmosphere wasn't so nice I would've given it. I've been to Basil once or twice, but the last time didn't really wow me. Service is ok - our waiter was nice, but hostess was just fine. I ordered the steak appetizer, Pad Thai, and a keylime pie mocktail. The steak was good and flavorful in the sauce. Could use a little kick of spice, but the tangy/savoriness is good! The Pad Thai was on the sweeter side, noodles were super thin and soggy, and just didn't have the umami flavor most good Pad Thai dishes have. The chicken was overcooked and shrimp was just okay. I probably would get the Pad See Ew next time, not the Pad Thai. The keylime pie mocktail came out and it was like drinking coconut lime water - not one touch of sweetness. I had to get a new one remade to be sweeter which then wasn't bad, but not something I'd order again. This place is good for Mt. Pleasant, but there are plenty of better, more authentic Thai restaurants in Charleston. read more

Easily one of the best I've ever touched in my life, no exaggeration. Perfect balance, great texture, the kind of plate that makes you stop talking mid-sentence. The green curry on the other hand... yeah, that one missed the mark. Very missed the mark. Bold flavors are expected, but this was one of the weakest versions I've had anywhere. This place has a great outside patio with some shade by the lake. After checking in with the hostess inside, you'll know why we opt for outside almost year-round. While it's elegant and cool inside, the noise level can be difficult for a conversational meal; so dine a la fresco with some delicious Thai eats. Their basil rolls don't disappoint with soft rice noodles and fresh finely chopped veggies inside a nicely prepared, unfried rice wrapper. Traveled to the area for a quick beach trip with my Mama. We always love trying new Thai places wherever we are. Came across Basil and decided to give it a try. The restaurant is in a nice area, nice decor, good amount of items on the menu. My Mama had the Pad Thai and the taste was a bit off to us. We be eaten out for share of Pad Thai and the sauce used was on the vinegary side. The papaya salad is my favorite dish and this one wasn't my favorite. It just seemed like something was missing. The Thai tea was a little weak in taste. Now, for the good stuff, the duck fried rice was AMAZING! Maybe one of the best I've ever had! Really loved it and wish I ordered a second to go. The flavor was perfect, the amount of duck was perfect. It was the highlight of my meal for our trip. If we are ever in the area again, I'd get the duck fried rice and try something else different next time. read more

Thai food is one of my favorite cuisines, and after visiting the Basil location in downtown Charleston, I was excited to try the one in Mount Pleasant. The pad Thai ended up being one of the best I have ever had. It was super flavorful and honestly surprised me in the best way. The green curry, however, was the complete opposite. It lacked flavor and did not resemble a traditional green curry, which was disappointing given how strong the pad Thai was. Overall, the service was good and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. I would return for the pad Thai alone, and I am hoping the curry experience was just an off day. read more

Just eat take out from Basil. The food was not good. Do not order the Pad Thai or the basil rolls. The chicken was tough, the noodles stuck together and there no vegetables in it as far the rolls they were extremely small and the sauce was more of a sweet and sour not like any peanut sauce I have ever had. Hard to really say this place was a 4 star dinner 3.5 would be more accurate but this place is certainly not a 3 so here we are. The decor is upscale and modern, the service was quite professional, almost like a restaurant downtown and not in an upscale strip mall in the burbs. The busters cleared dirty used plates so quickly that sometimes you would think the kitchen is running out of plates. Speaking of the kitchen, it's an open show kitchen which is always fun. As for the food, it was fresh not precooked and then reheated as happens at some Asian places, but it was lacking some flavor. We started with the basil shrimp rolls, which were pretty, but if you did not get a bite of basil or shrimp they were bland. The steamed dumplings were very very tasty, and actually stayed all connected after the steaming, not an easy trick. The wonton soup was served in a fancy chalice and it was tasty as well, though perhaps lacking some additional zip. I can't blame them for by choice, the Thai Noodles. I should not have picked it as the chili sauce was the same as the sauce for the basil rolls, so it was a lot of the same flavors. That's all on me, though the pork was cooked perfectly. I can see why they do a great takeout business as well, and if I lived nearby I am sure we would go back since there were so many things to try, but it's just not special enough to run back to as an out of towner. read more

I get takeout from the Mount Pleasant location occasionally since it's convenient. I usually get Pho because I love the broth and noodles, but the chicken is typically chewy and I usually don't end up eating it. The egg rolls are really good! The online menu and menu pricing differ from in person and from phone orders, which can make it confusing, and I think it's a bit pricey for the quality, but okay in a pinch! read more

I love Basil!! It's my favorite Thai restaurant ever it's so good n tasty. I've eaten here countless of times and it's always so delicious. Every time I go the food is always fresh and cooked perfectly. All their food is made with high quality for sure. I am absolutely obsessed with their fried egg rolls they are the best I've ever had. Everything on the menu is so good you can't go wrong. I also love that they can make your food spicy if that what you like. My favorites are the spring rolls, stuffed shrimp, fried wontons, chicken satay, larb, Tom Kai Gai soup, pad Thai, basil chicken, Barramundi shrimp/fish, basil chicken, masaman curry there are just so many amazing dishes. Came with 3 friends on a Saturday evening at around 8:30 pm. I had made a reservation but I think we would've been sat pretty soon even without one. We shared the pad Thai, green curry with chicken, basil entree with pork, and the red curry duck. My personal favorites were the red curry duck and green curry. The red curry duck had a crispy skin (although the duck itself was a bit dry). The red curry was yummy but I wish they had put in a little more. The green curry was perfect, no complaints. The pad Thai unfortunately was too sweet and the noodles were too soggy. I thought the pork in the basil entree was really dry. Really what redeemed this place were the curries. Our waitress was kind enough to give us a free refill of rice as well. Dinner came to around $30/person after tip. read more

I'm from California and every out of town visit I always try to get some Thai food. Here is my pros and cons review of Basil. Pros- Staff is very professional and welcoming. The location has some great ambience and it felt authentic. Cons- The food was just ok. First time visiting a Thai restaurant that didn't serve Panang Curry so we had the Red Curry with Chicken. It had no flavor. The Thai ice tea was not good. The Pad See Ew with shrimp dish was decent. Overall I would probably visit another Thai restaurant before I return to Basil. read more

The seating is comfortable for a long meal, and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu! I finally tried the masaman curry and I'd recommend it with tofu. This a delightful Thai cuisine! The portions are large and can be shared! My daughter and I split the Wonton Soup and Shrimp Fried Rice. The Wonton Soup comes in a large elevated steaming dish that is festive and fun for the whole table. Consisted of large meaty wontons, chopped celery, and chopped green onions. Fresh and full of flavor. The Shrimp fried rice was loaded with carrots, zucchini, onions and red peppers. Not overly salted. We sat outside overlooking a fountain and lighted palms. Excellent food. I placed the order online noting a nut and shellfish allergy and immediately received a call because one of the items had a shellfish sauce which they substituted for me. I'm so happy that they take it so seriously. The shrimp soup, red curry duck and duck fried rice were so flavorful. I'd highly recommend this restaurant. The food and the ambiance were excellent. What struck me though was the service-not so much our server although she was great. What caught my attention was a lovely lady I concluded was the owner. She helped servers set tables, roamed the room making sure everybody had what he/she needed, that their food was great and that there was nothing further they needed. She worked hard and was smiling throughout the process. She took such pride in the restaurant that I concluded ( incorrectly) that she was the owner. When I told her she must be the owner she corrected me and said he had the night off. Kudos to Miky for making my and others experience so enjoyable! read more
